Dr. Dre Addresses Abuse Accusations With Apology, Apple Releases Supporting Statement
With the recent release of the movie Straight Outta Compton detailing Dr. Dre’s hip-hop group N.W.A, unsavory moments from Dre’s past were unearthed as critics questioned why the movie didn’t cover his abuse towards women. During the 1990s, Dr. Dre was accused of assaulting several women, including his girlfriend at the time Michel’le and television host Dee Barnes.
In response to the allegations, Dr. Dre has given a statement to The New York Times apologizing for his actions and saying he deeply regrets what he did in his youth.

“Twenty-five years ago I was a young man drinking too much and in over my head with no real structure in my life. However, none of this is an excuse for what I did. I’ve been married for 19 years and every day I’m working to be a better man for my family, seeking guidance along the way. I’m doing everything I can so I never resemble that man again.”
He added: “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.”
Dr. Dre has been employed at Apple for the past year, following the company’s acquisition of Beats Electronics and Beats Music, created by both Dre and Jimmy Iovine. Apple also gave a statement to The New York Times, supporting Dr. Dre.
“Dre has apologized for the mistakes he’s made in the past and he’s said that he’s not the same person that he was 25 years ago. We believe his sincerity and after working with him for a year and a half, we have every reason to believe that he has changed.”
At Apple, Dr. Dre is working on Apple Music alongside Jimmy Iovine. Though he has no specific title, Dre has been involved with Beats 1 radio, hosting his own weekly show called “The Pharmacy” and has released two albums exclusively on Apple Music, including “Compton: A Soundtrack,” the official soundtrack of the Straight Outta Compton movie, and “The Chronic,” originally released in 1992.

ZUK announces partnership with Cyanogen, international Z1 variant incoming
ZUK has announced it’s partnering with Cyanogen to create an international version of the ZUK Z1. The ZUK Z1 was announced in China early last week. Reportedly, the new variant will be based on Cyanogen OS 12.1.
The international variant of the ZUK Z1 will most likely include very similar specifications to the original Z1. We can expect a near 5.5-inch 1080p display with speedy internals. We are most likely looking at a quad-core Snapdragon 801 SoC and around 64GB of internal storage.
The press conference will be held August 21 in Shenzhen. The company will most likely give us more details about the partnership between themselves and Cyanogen, whose Senior Vise President is scheduled to attend the event. Hopefully we’ll learn more about their upcoming plans.

Here are the apps featured on BlackBerry’s ‘Venice’ phone
This November, BlackBerry will be taking a step in a new direction. The company, which has struggled in recent years to remain competitive, is expected to release an Android-powered device known internally as Venice. The phone has leaked various times, showing that it will have a display with curved edges and BlackBerry’s signature physical keyboard. Although Android 5.0 Lollipop is going to be present, BlackBerry has the option of going with a regular version of Android with their own modifications or using a forked version (like Amazon) where everything is locked.
Now we know that BlackBerry will be using its own launcher at the very least.
Evan Blass took to Twitter on Friday morning to share a list of applications that will be featured on BlackBerry’s Venice. Most of them are self-explanatory: Calendar, BBM, Meetings, Contacts, Help, Tasks, and Notes. Two others — Launcher and Hub — could indicate that Venice will be far from a stock Android experience.
The Hub app is BlackBerry’s place for messages, emails, and notifications to be centralized. The company already uses Hub on devices using its own BlackBerry 10 operating system. The Launcher app, though, causes us to believe that BlackBerry will be doing much more than just having Hub be what makes Venice unique. BlackBerry is likely working on an all-in-one launcher similar to what HTC does with Sense Home.

Could this be the design of the Sony Xperia Z5?
Rumors and leaks of Sony’s Xperia Z5 flagship are beginning to heat up. We could expect the flagship to be announced as early as IFA 2015. With the announcement just around the corner, a new image has popped up on Twitter labeled E6xxx. E6553 is the model number for the Sony Z4, which gives us reasonable suspicion this could be the company’s upcoming Z5 flagship.
The image appears to be a case or chassis/frame schematics for the upcoming flagship. The design looks similar to what we’ve seen on recent Sony flagships like the Z3+ and Z4, but has some minor changes. Riccolo, posted one word to go along with the design, “comfortable.” Recent reports have suggested a new UI design overhaul that could make its way to the upcoming flagship, in addition to a more elegant and modern design. No specifications or official renders have leaked so one could predict the flagship will skip IFA 2015. If Sony does elect to announce the flagship at IFA 2015, you could expect press invites to go out shortly. We should find out more details about the upcoming flagships release date in the coming days.

Verizon might be planning to re-brand the Motorola Moto X Play as the Motorola DROID MAXX 2
Previous rumors that the Moto X Play wouldn’t make it to the United States might not be true after all. A Motorola tipster said the company will indeed sell the Moto X Play in the United States as a Verizon exclusive. A new report says the Moto X Play will be re-branded to the DROID MAXX 2 on Verizon. Nothing is official, so take this rumor with a grain of salt.
The Moto X Play includes a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 615 SoC backed with 2GB of RAM. Android 5.1 is pre-installed, a 21MP camera is at the back and a 5MP will be included on the front. The Moto X Play will include 32GB of internal storage and a pre-installed 3630mAh battery.
For Motorola X Play fans in the United States, there is still hope! We should find out more details in the coming weeks.

Moto 360 (2nd gen) spotted in the wild

We’ve been anticipating a next-gen Moto 360 for some time now, though earlier this month we got one of the best looks at the device to date, courtesy of a video Motorola put up on Twitter, only to take down shortly thereafter. Need even more evidence that the new 360 is on its way? Apparently the watch has been sighted a few times in the wild.
The images above and below were taken in Chicago, the home of Motorola, and show off a design that fits perfectly with all the previous leaks and hints we’ve been given. That means you can expect a new design with lugs that should make it easier to put on custom bands. It also, unfortunately, looks like the dreaded black bar is back.

As an owner of the original Moto 360, I can tell you the black bar isn’t as bad as some claim, and you do get used to it over time. That said, it seems odd that Motorola wouldn’t have come up with a better (less controversial) way of storing its ambient sensors and other components a year after the original. Then again, it’s not the only company taking this approach.
With the watch surfacing in the wild, an official announcement is likely not too far away. As for what kind of hardware we are looking at here? Aside from ditching the ancient Texas Instrument chip (or at least we hope they did…), not much else is known. It’s likely that Motorola could go with a Snapdragon here, but with Intel and other chip makers getting into the Android Wear game — anything is possible.
What do you think, excited for the next-gen Moto 360? Does the black bar’s return at all influence your potential purchasing decision?
Best Galaxy Note 5 cases

Today is the big day. While T-Mobile and Verizon began sales a bit early, for the rest of the carriers, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ have officially arrived! We’re sure you have heard a lot about Samsung’s latest big-screen flagship duo, which take on the same premium aesthetics found on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The design may be gorgeous, but, unfortunately, that doesn’t mean it is impervious to wear, tear, drops, and bruises. Thankfully, that’s where a good case can come into play.

For those looking for a little extra protection for their brand new Galaxy Note 5, we’ve gathered up some of the best cases you can buy and put them all in one post.
Note 5 clear view case

For those that prefer official accessories, you might want to turn your attention to the Note 5 Clear S-View case. This case is designed to protect your device while also providing a beautiful look to the rear in your choice of silver, gold, or black. Not only will you get protection on the rear, but the front will also be covered. At the same time, the clear design up front means you’ll be able to see and interact with upcoming notifications and calls, all without ever needing to take off the front cover.
As you’d expect, being an official accessory does mean that the cover does come at a bit of a premium. The clear S-View cover will set you back $59.99, and while you can pre-order it now, it won’t actually ship until August 31st.
Note 5 Mophie battery case
One of the downsides to the new Note 5 design is that you can no longer remove a dead battery, swap in a replacement, and keep on chugging along. That’s where a case like this could really come in handy. The Mophie case not only protects your device from bruises and bumps, it also includes an integrated battery! While the Mophie case hasn’t officially arrived, it is expected to debut on its store in the near future.
Exact battery size is unknown, though the Galaxy S6 version of the case packs a 3000 mAh added battery, so we’d expect at least that big. As for pricing? We’d expect it to set you back around $99.
Kate Spade Note 5 case

This sleek looking case is from Kate Spade New York and features an attractive design crafted for saffiano leather that not only protects your phone, it actually adds to the aesthetics and helps your phone stand out from a crowd. For those looking for a designer quality case, this could certainly be worthy of your consideration.
On the other hand, it is also one of the more expensive cases out there at $55.99, putting it in similar pricing territory to Samsung’s own official case.
Ringke SLIM case for Galaxy Note 5

Who says a good case has to set you back a lot of money? The Ringke Slim case offers 4-side corner-to-corner protection, has a tapered lip and lifted camera area to protect the sensor and screen, and is designed to fit snuggly without adding a bunch of weight. While not nearly as attractive as the bare naked look of the Galaxy Note 5, it isn’t a bad looking case and does come in a variety of different colors including crystal, mint, white, gold, and black.
The best part about the Ringke Slim case is it is extremely affordable. Depending on the color, you’ll pay anywhere from $8.99 to $13.99. To make a good deal even better, Ringke includes a complimentary screen protector as well. Not a bad investment, we’d say.
Verus Verge Case for Samsung Galaxy Note 5

The Verus Verge Case for the Galaxy Note 5 is almost identical to the version previously seen for the Edge+. It is a tough, slim fitting case that consists of a hard shell frame with a soft rugged inner shell to provide extra durability from drops and scratches. The two-piece design is very durable, all without adding too much extra bulk.
The Verus Verge Case in five different colors: titanium silver, gold, red, blue, and satin silver. Pricing is $16.99, regardless of your choice of color.
Spigen Neo Hybrid for Note 5

A best case list wouldn’t be complete without at least a few entries dealing with Spigen. There is a good reason why Spigen is a popular choice, not only are its cases quite durable, they are also not too pricey. The Neo Hybrid series is a two-piece case that is comprised of a shock-absorbing TPU case and a polycarbonate bumper. The case also has metalized buttons that give the volume and rockers a great click to them.
You can grab this case from Amazon starting at just $16.99 for the gold or gunmetal choices. You’ll need to pony up $20.99 for the dante red, metal slate, blue topaz, or satin silver options.
OtterBox Defender series

One of the biggest and best brands in the case industry is OtterBox. At the top of this line, you’ll find the Defender series, which provides three layers of protection that protects your device from drops and scrapes in a way few other cases can compete with. With the Defender you get a polycarbonate inner shell with an internal foam padding, a synthetic rubber outer slipcover, and even a built-in screen protector up front. Port plugs also help protect your device from dust and debris, making it a job option for construction and other heavy duty scenarios.
The Defender also lets you customize the shell color, as well as the slipcover, creating a combo that will further help your phone stand out. Ond the downside, OtterBox cases tend to be on the pricey side, with this case setting you back $69.90.
Spigen Slim Armor for Note 5

A bit higher up the price ladder from the Neo Hybrid, the Slim Armor also has a dual-layered design made of hard polycarbonate and flexible TPU. Not only will this design protect your phone from drops and scuffs, it also has an integrated kickstand which will make consuming media even more enjoyable. In many ways this case will perform similarly to the Neo but bears a different overall look and feel that is further complemented by the built-in kickstand.
The Slim Armor starts at just $13.99 for the gunmetal option, which is actually a bit cheaper than the Neo Hybrid. For the rest, however, you’ll pay either $18.99 or $24.99, depending on your color choice.
i-Blason Prime Series for Galaxy Note 5

The i-Blason Prime is a tough case with an attractive design that is designed with shock absorption and abrasion resistance in mind. There are two parts here, the silicone case and a hard shell layer that clips onto it to offer added protection and durability while not adding too much in the way of bulk.
For those that enjoy ‘extras’, outside of simply having a solid case, the Prime also includes an integrated kickstand. Not bad considering the price tag is only $9.99 for red and blue, or $11.95 for black.
Spigen Wallet case

Last but not least, the Spigen Wallet case is an attractive folio wallet case made of synthetic leather and a hard polycarbonate inner-housing. For those that want something elegant without the hard plastic feel, this is certainly an option worthy of your consideration. You also, obviously, have storage for cards and cash with this particular choice. Even better, the case can be converted into kickstand mode for better media consumption, and the leather wallet design provides front and back protection.
The Spigen Wallet case is available only in black at a price of $18.99.
from their website. That’s just ten of the better cases out there for the Note 5, and in no way represents them all. In fact, Samsung has a number of additional 1st party cases which can be reviewed directly from their website. How did you like our list? Did we miss anything? Be sure to let us know if you have any suggestions down in the comment section below.
Google Chrome spellchecks multiple languages at once
Google is adding a new feature for Chrome that will help bilingual folks and ex-pats a lot. Developer François Beaufort revealed that you can now spellcheck in multiple languages, even in the same document, without getting the dreaded squiggly red lines. That’s a feature that the Android SwiftKey keyboard has had for ages, but it’ll save others a lot of trouble when writing in comments, blogging systems like WordPress or Google’s Docs. It’s now enabled in the experimental Chromium Canary browser on Windows, ChromeOS or Linux, usually a good sign it’ll come to the final build soon (Chrome on Mac uses the OS X language settings). I tried it in a Google Doc, and as you can see below, it works nickel chrome.

Foursquare dusts off its leaderboards for Swarm
Foursquare has clearly been trying to bring back the sparkle it lost when it split into two. After reviving global mayorships in hopes of enticing old users to start checking in again, it’s now reinstating the old app’s leaderboards. Swarm version 3.0 incorporates a revamped leaderboard, which pits you against friends and ranks you all based on the number of coins you have. Each check in earns you coins, but the amount varies per location — some could give you just a coin or two, while other places could add a dozen to your total — and you get bonuses for mayorships and check-in streaks. The company says those coins might have more uses in the future, but you can think of them as “points” for now. By the way, the leaderboard resets every week, so everyone has a chance to be number one… though we guess that only matters if you have friends who still use Swarm.
