Will your region get the Samsung Galaxy Note 5? Here’s a list of confirmed regions

samsung galaxy note 5 color comparison (19 of 22)

We were all expecting the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+ to debut last week, but what we weren’t expecting was that it was the former would find itself limited only to select countries, while the latter was pushed as the global handset. So far the only thing we can say with a fair sense of certainty is that the Galaxy Note 5 will not be coming to Europe, at least not in 2015. But what markets are getting the phone? Thanks to SamMobile, we now have a list of confirmed regions based on available firmwares.

It’s important to note that this list is likely not 100% complete, but if your country isn’t on the list, there’s a pretty good chance you won’t find the Note 5 marketed in your region and will instead have to settle for the Galaxy S6 Edge+ if you want Samsung’s latest.

LeTV teases first Snapdragon 820 powered smartphone

LeTV-Snapdragon-820-Teaser

You may not have heard of LeTV, an up and coming smartphone manufacturer based in China, but the company has just been the first to tease a smartphone based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 SoC.

The company has only posted a picture up to its Hong Kong Facebook account, which doesn’t reveal anything else about the smartphone other than a short reference to the “820”. This is also a rather premature announcement, as the first Snapdragon 820 smartphones aren’t expected to make an appearance until early 2016. The teaser also doesn’t necessarily mean that LeTV will be the first to market with an 820 powered handset, but it’s interesting to note that a smaller brand has early access to Qualcomm’s processors.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 was made official last week, and will be arriving with a new high-end Adreno 530 GPU, which boasts 40 percent improvements to performance and energy consumption, along with a Spectra ISP with some new imaging features. The 820 is also set to be the first SoC to use Qualcomm’s own 64-bit ARMv8 based Kyro CPU core designs, rather than the reference Cortex-A57 and A53 cores found in its current chip generation. Qualcomm has been keeping details about its new CPU cores very close to its chest, but the company is apparently going back to a quad-core design, rather than producing another octa-core chip.

LeTV has been gaining some traction in China thanks to its small range of low cost, high-end smartphones. The company’s existing LeTV One Pro and One Max are based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processing package, but cost much less than flagship smartphones from HTC or Samsung. We will have to see if the new processor can restore Qualcomm’s shaken reputation after the overheating issues with its 810.

Are you waiting for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 to hit the market before making your next purchase?

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Note 5 in these countries

samsung_unpacked_2015_galaxy_note_5_top_half_display_TA

Samsung may have only launched the Galaxy Note 5 last week, but some orders are already being shipped out to some buyers. By now, you’ve probably read that Samsung has no plans to bring this latest addition to the Note series to Europe in 2015. So, other than the US and South Korea, where is Samsung launching the Note 5?

According to SamMobile, The Note 5 will be available in the following markets:

  • CAM- Cambodia SM-N920C
  • AFG – Afghanistan SM-N920C
  • TGY – Hong Kong SM-N900
  • XXV – Vietnam SM-N920C
  • TUN – Tunisia SM-N920C
  • KSA – Saudia Arabia SM-N920C
  • CEL – Israel (Cellcom) SM-N920C
  • BTC – Libya SM-N920C
  • PCT – Puerto Rico SM-N920W8
  • BRI – Taiwan SM-N9208
  • GLB – Philippines (Globe) SM-N9208
  • MYM – MYM SM-N9208
  • XSA – Australia (Vodafone)
  • VFJ – VFJ SM-N920I
  • MID – Iraq SM-N920C
  • MWD – Morocco (MWD) SM-N920C
  • PTR – Israel (Orange/Partner) SM-N920C
  • VNZ – New Zealand (Vodafone)
  • TNZ – New Zealand SM-N920I
  • PNG – Papua New Guinea SM-N920I
  • OPS – Australia (Optus) SM-N920I
  • NZC – New Zealand
  • TEL – Australia (Telstra)
  • MM1 – Singapore SM-N920I
  • CHC – China SM-N9200

The list is by no means final as yet, but it’s easy to see that Samsung appear to be avoiding Europe at all costs. It’s difficult to understand the Korean company’s strategy, surely Europe is a larger market for the Note 5 than say, Libya? It should be noted that I’m not against Libya having access and I’m definitely not advocating an us-instead-of-them policy. I’m just surprised that Samsung is choosing to believe that Europe wanted a larger Galaxy S6 edge and not the newest Note handset. Where is the natural upgrade path for the Note 3 owner who is coming to end of his/her contract? Doesn’t Samsung care about it’s loyal Galaxy Note fans?

Hopefully, LG and Sony’s upcoming flagship devices will provide an alternative, another worthy but cheaper alternative would be the Moto X Pure Edition (Style in Europe).  If you were hoping to upgrade to the Note 5 in Europe, which handset are you now looking at? Or are you hoping that Clove UK’s petition will do the trick?

Lock screen photo messenger Trumpit gets in-house camera after exiting beta

trumpit_lock_screen_messaging

Trading pictures with friends and family is a time-consuming activity. You have a lot of work to do between opening the message, selecting the image to view, capturing a picture of your own, and returning the favor. Trumpit seeks to eliminate much of that fluff by placing pictures messages on your lock screen. Rightfully so, Trumpit bills itself as a “lock screen messenger.” You never have to completely unlock your phone and use another app to swap pictures with contacts. Today, Trumpit is ready for showtime as it has left the beta phase and gained an important new feature.

trumpit_in-house_camera

The newest version of Trumpit (v1.5) introduces an in-house camera for users to take advantage of. What’s the benefit of Trumpit getting its own camera? Having one less button to press. Choose to reply and then go right for the camera button; rather than launching your phone’s camera app, Trumpit will handle everything so you’re not forced to jump around between apps. Even tools for adding filters, text, and highlights remain accessible. This is all part of Trumpit’s goal to send and receive pictures with speed and ease.

Speedo is partnering with Misfit to produce an activity tracker for swimmers

misfit_speedo_shine_water_flowing

Swimmers are finally receiving the attention that they deserve. Speedo, a name synonymous with swimming, announced a partnership with Misfit to release an activity tracker that is designed for people that practically live in pools. The Speedo Shine borrows its name from Misfit’s regular Shine. The difference here is that the Speedo Shine features special lap counting algorithms to accurately record a swimmer’s progress. Data collected by the Speedo Shine — laps, distance, carlories burned, points earned — is synced with the Misfit app. The Speedo Fit app will gain support for the Speedo Shine, too, in the near future. And to prove just how accurate the Speedo Shine is, testing was conducted in Speedo’s Aqualab advanced development facility.

The Speedo Shine will be available for $79 through Misfit, Speedo, and Apple stores beginning September 1.

Hit the break for the full press release.

Speedo, Misfit Partner to Introduce Swim Tracker in Apple Stores

BURLINGAME, CA August 18th, 2015–Misfit and Speedo today are announcing a long-term partnership and the launch of a Speedo-branded activity, swim, and sleep tracker–Speedo Shine. Speedo Shine will initially be available in retail exclusively at Apple stores worldwide September 1st, well as on misfit.com and SpeedoUSA.com, for $79.99.

Speedo Shine is the first device of its kind that was designed with simmers in mind. Proprietary lap counting algorithms embedded in the device’s firmware track a swimmer’s lap count with industry-leading accuracy, as validated by Speedo in-pool testing at their advanced developmental facility, the Aqualab, and work for all stroke types. Speedo Shine syncs with the Misfit app for iOS and Android and displays laps and swim distance, along with calories burned and points earned. The device will soon also work with Speedo’s personalized swim tracking app, Speedo Fit.

Speedo Shine is endorsed by elite Speedo athlete, fitness ambassador, and Olympic Gold Medalist Missy Franklin. “One of the mots difficult parts of swimming for fitness is keeping track of laps and the Speedo Shine eliminates that challenge,” said Franklin. “With the Speedo Shine, you can focus on getting the most out of your water workout and it’s also a great looking accessory to wear.”

Speedo Shine is made out of durable and beautiful aircraft-grade aluminum and is offered in new light silver color, Pure. Like the original Misfit Shine, Speedo Shine is waterproof to 50 meters. Extremely thin and comfortable, the device is meant to be worn both in and out of the water, and also tracks walking, running, cycling, and light and deep sleep. Since it never requires charging, Speedo Shine makes activity, sleep, and swim tracking a seamless experience.

Jamie Cornforth, Vice President of Product and Marketing at Speedo International said: “Speedo’s purpose is to inspire people to swim. The new Speedo Shine is a big step forward and will give swimmers the information they have always wanted, the ability to accurately track their laps, distance, calories, and time. The new Speedo Shine also allows swimmers to take this information and seamlessly add it to their wider fitness data, providing an accurate and complete view of their total health and fitness regime. Swimming has always been a great way to improve your health and fitness–the Speedo Shine will now make swimming an even more valuable and effective experience.”

Lower-limb exoskeleton is controlled by looking at flashing lights

Just like DARPA and many other institutions, Korea University and TU Berlin researchers are working on an interface that gives users the power to control an exoskeleton with their minds. The system uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) cap to read signals from the user’s brain, but it also needs visual cues to work. For their tests, specifically, the scientists installed a panel with five LED lights on their lower-limb exoskeleton. Those LEDs are arranged as a cross, and each one has a different meaning. For instance, if the left light blinks, it’s a command to walk towards that direction. The user has to see that light flashing, so when the EEG cap reads his brain to know what he’s looking at, the exoskeleton will actually move left. This video from Korean University shows the process in detail.

Like other scientists working on similar exoskeleton systems, one of the paper’s authors, Klaus Muller, believes it could help people who can’t move on their own someday. “People with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [motor neuron disease], or high spinal cord injuries face difficulties communicating or using their limbs,” he said. “Decoding what they intend from their brain signals could offer means to communicate and walk again.”

Swipe right on this: Fallout Shelter is on Tinder

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Among the wackiest of marketing campaigns, this one must be close to taking the cake. In an attempt to market its latest game, Fallout Shelter is on Tinder, presumably to leverage the many lonely hearts that frequent the matchmaking app – it’s a pretty crazy idea, but you can kind of see how it might work. The account is genuinely official, started by Bethesda presumably using the Android release of the game as a springboard for more advertising.

Fallout Shelter is on Tinder

Yes, we know, it’s an iPhone screenshot…

In case you’re not on board with the Fallout Shelter craze yet (and you’re not on Tinder), the game is a 2D management simulation that sees you take control of a Vault, protecting your citizens from nuclear warfare in the Fallout universe. The game was extremely popular on the Apple App Store, rocketing to #1 in its first week there, and it’s already #3 of the Top Apps on Google Play. If that’s not enough of a rousing recommendation, then I’m not sure what will turn you. If you are interested, we’ve included the Play Store link to Fallout Shelter below:

Apple Watch Users Embracing Apple Pay for Everyday Purchases

Apple Pay on iPhone is a convenient and secure way to make payments without taking a debit or credit card out of your wallet, but you still need to take the smartphone out of your pocket to make a purchase. For that reason, Apple Pay has proven more transformative on Apple Watch, since the device is worn on the wrist and readily available for contactless payments.

The latest data from research firm Wristly supports that notion, with 80% of the over 1,000 respondents surveyed in the U.S. and U.K. claiming they have used Apple Pay on an Apple Watch at least once. The remaining 20% of respondents indicated they “do not perceive a benefit” to Apple Pay, have security concerns or believe their payment needs are already being met.

Wristly Apple Pay First Use
Just over half (51%) of respondents described using Apple Pay on the Apple Watch as “magical,” an adjective often used by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, while 42% indicated that the service is “convenient.” An additional 3% of respondents said Apple Pay is “good,” but with some areas of concern, and the remaining 4% of users found Apple Pay “not that useful.”

Given the choice, 79% of respondents preferred to use Apple Pay on the Apple Watch and 9% preferred to use the mobile payments service on an iPhone. The survey panel most commonly used Apple Pay for everyday shopping (81%), in addition to recurring services such as Starbucks (60%), bigger purchases (35%), in-app purchases (29%) and other purchases (11%)… Read more »

FAA says a buggy software update grounded flights

Flights stuck in Washington, DC

Ever got a bad smartphone update? Now imagine that your phone controls air traffic on the Eastern seaboard, and you have some idea what happened to flights on Saturday. The FAA said that a software update that was supposed to help controllers see frequently used info at a radar facility ended up bringing down the overall system. That caused the cancellation of hundreds of flights in Baltimore and Washington, DC, reducing capacity up to 28 percent. The agency said everything’s fine now that it’s disabled the new function, and it’s working with Lockheed Martin to figure out why the bug wasn’t caught in testing. Meanwhile, you can now factor software glitches, hacking and bad routers into your flight plans.
