You can now order Samsung’s Fast Charge Wireless Charger, for $70

One of the new features Samsung touted with the launch of the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ was Fast Charge Wireless Charging support.  Those of us who use Fast Charge on the wire know that it is something special.  Samsung is now betting on a cord-free future.

Unfortunately, we’re not there yet.  And if you want to be on the cutting edge, it’s gonna cost ya.  Samsung has now opened the product page for its fast wireless charger, with a steep $70 price tag.

To recap, on supported devices, this charger will wirelessly charge up to 1.4x faster than standard wireless charging pads.  The 3,000 mAh battery on the Note 5 and S6 Edge+ is said to go from 0% to 100% in just under 2 hours.  In comparison, typical Qi wireless charging pads go for under $20 on online outlets such as Amazon.

If you’re picking up a shiny new Samsung phablet soon, you’ll have to decide if $70 is worth the bump up in charging speed.  The fast wireless charger is offered in either White or Black colors.

Who else was wishing that Samsung’s new wireless charger would be included in the box with our new phones?

British farmer tired of slow internet built his own 4G telephone mast

richard_guy_4g_mast_081815

60-year-old farmer Richard Guy has been experiencing slow internet speeds at home for years. After noticing that his mobile’s 4G internet connectivity was faster than the broadband connection provided by BT, he decided to built his own wooden telephone mast and attached a 4G adaptor to it. He now experiences perfect high-speed internet.

Richard Guy lives on an isolated farm in Salisbury Plain, and has been fighting with slow internet speeds for years. After noticing that his mobile’s 4G internet was significantly faster than BT’s broadband connection, he decided to find a way to route the signal to his farmhouse. To do so, he built a makeshift wooden telephone mast made up of a pair of wooden poles, in which he hooked a 4G dongle adaptor inside a waterproof toolbox, powered by a 12V battery and two solar panels. He then connected the mast to his home via a fiber-optic wire. He now experiences perfect internet connection at high speeds. The British government had said that the 2012 summer Olympics would bring fast broadband to everyone in Britain. No improvement were made in the area and so Mr. Guy handled things himself;

“So I decided to take matters into my own hands. We only had a 1 Mbps [megabits per second] speed, which means everything is far too slow. Now I run at 69 Mbps, it runs everything perfectly”

That is a significant internet speed difference compared to the average household speed of 25 Mbps.

The result was so successful that Mr. Guy and his wife Gilly decided to start a company called Agri-Broadband, which aims at providing super-fast internet connections to England’s most rural homes.

Opera Max saves data on YouTube and Netflix

Until now, one of the limitations with the Opera Max Android app is that it doesn’t compress encrypted connections, which is probably a good thing except that many video platforms use HTTPS. That’s no longer an issue with the software’s latest release, which can now compress YouTube and Netflix video streams over HTTPS “without any significant loss in quality.” This means there’s less buffer time, and you can binge-watch more viral clips within the same data allowance. But Opera isn’t stopping there, as it’s already working on bringing more secured video services and social apps — including Facebook and Snapchat — on board, so stay tuned.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ now up for pre-order in the UK

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 may never come to the UK, but if you’re a phablet fan that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. The company is also pushing its monstrous 5.7-inch Galaxy S6 Edge+, which is available to pre-order today ahead of its full debut on September 4th. You can buy the 32GB model from Samsung’s site for £749, or splash an extra £80 for double the storage. For comparison, the company is selling the Galaxy S6 for £499 at the moment and the regular S6 Edge from £669. If buying the device off-contract sounds absurdly expensive — you can buy four new Moto Gs for the same price, after all — you can always pick up a subsidised device with your preferred mobile network. Vodafone, O2 and Three, among others, have a wide array of plans for you to mull over.

Nuance brings the full power of Dragon voice recognition to mobile

Dragon/Nuance Booth

Since the dawn of the iPhone, Nuance has been working on delivering the full capabilities of its Dragon NaturalySpeaking voice recognition software to mobile devices. That started with the company’s technology lending a hand to iOS’ dictation capabilities (Nuance still won’t talk about how it’s working with Apple), as well as launching a handful of Dragon apps, which handled some basic dictation and integration with Dragon’s desktop software. But with the release of Dragon Anywhere this fall, Nuance will finally bring most of Dragon’s desktop capabilities to the iPhone and Android. That includes fast voice recognition, unlimited dictation time (no putting off your self-published novel now), custom word inserts and a wide array of editing options all powered by Nuance’s Dragon cloud service. Dragon Anywhere is basically built for people who already rely heavily on its desktop sibling. Nuance hasn’t settled on pricing yet, but a rep says it’ll likely be around $15 a month or $150 a year.

For the most part, Dragon Anywhere seems best suited to field work that involves plenty of documentation. You can build up your own form with specific fields and navigate it entirely with your voice — something that could be useful to field technicians, social workers, lawyers and the like. In a brief demonstration, it was able to fill out a variety of forms fairly accurately while Nuance’s Peter Mahoney, CMO and general manager of Dragon, dictated notes in our noisy office. Of course, since it’s powered by the cloud you’ll still need an internet connection to make use of Dragon Anywhere. Mahoney said Nuance has explored offline mobile dictation (today’s devices are certainly powerful enough), but for most use cases relying on the cloud still makes sense.

Dragon Anywhere will also synchronize with your desktop profile, allowing you to share custom phrases that you might already be relying on. While the app will improve over time, like most other Dragon solutions, those improvements aren’t yet shared with its desktop counterparts. That could be something Nuance could implement down the line, Mahoney said, but it’ll likely be a piecemeal process as the company synchronizes more elements of your voice profile with the cloud.

On the desktop side, Nuance is also launching a revamped version of Dragon for Macs ($200 new, or $100 as an upgrade) that brings over many more features from its PC dictation engine. There’s also Dragon Professional Individual for PCs, which brings down many of the features from Dragon Pro for Groups to $300 ($150 when upgrading from previous Dragon Pro versions, or $200 when upgrading from Dragon Premium).
