Project Ara rerouted as Puerto Rico gets dropped as first test market

Earlier this year, Puerto Rico was named as the first test market for Project Ara. The country was selected due to its reliance on mobile networks and the diversity among carriers and people. Today, the team behind Project Ara took to Twitter to provide an unfortunate update. The planned market pilot for Project Ara in Puerto Rico has been canceled.

A Google spokeswoman did confirm to PCWorld that Project Ara will continue to be developed even after this setback.

Project Ara is overseen by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. Regina Dugan, ATAP’s head, is in charge of deciding the fate of works like Project Ara. This means that Project Ara could soon be canned, sold, and or promoted to Google. The most likely scenario for Project Ara is that it becomes elevated to become a product of Google’s made available to the public. Despite Paul Eremenko leaving Project Ara in June, a commitment to making modular devices an accessible product globally seems as evident as ever.
