Bloomberg: Apple TV service is not coming in 2015

Apple

In keeping with the requirement of a new Apple TV rumor every few weeks, Bloomberg says the yet-to-be-announced subscription package will not debut until at least 2016. Its sources echo the Buzzfeed’s recent claim that a new Apple TV box will be unveiled this fall, however difficulty negotiating deals with content providers and building up a network capable of delivering that much video is delaying the rollout of a video service. Another problem cited is finding “the right mix” of channels to sell for about $40 per month, an issue also faced by competition like PlayStation Vue and Sling TV. Sling TV has also faced a few outages, demonstrating the difficulty of maintaining a network to reliable handle the bandwidth requirements of so much live and on-demand video. There’s no mention of the possibility of an app store or gaming in this report, so we’ll pencil those in for the next leak from anonymous sources in a few weeks.

League of Legends’ first pro female player weighs her options

“I just want it to be known that I accomplished my goal for real, and I accomplished it for me, my teammates, and girls in eSports. That’s it. No one else. Don’t fucking put me on some LGBT agenda or some bullshit.”

That’s part of the statement that Maria Creveling, known as “Remilia” on the gaming stage, posted to Reddit this morning, following her team’s explosive victory in the North American League of Legends Challenger Series last night. The win bumped her team, Renegades, into the League of Legends Championship Series, meaning all of its players are now officially pro — and making Remilia the first professional female player in League of Legends history. However, she may choose to leave the LCS without ever playing a pro game.

After Renegades’ win on the Challenger Series stage — a tie-breaker match that ended in a convincing full-team push to destroy the rival team’s base — all five players jumped to their feet, threw down their headsets and hugged, clearly ecstatic. Remilia usually shies away from the limelight and she even asked Riot, the company behind League of Legends, to not show her on-camera during the match. But, after that win, she says she felt “really comfortable,” so she stuck around in front of the crowd and the rolling cameras.

Now, Remilia is considering her options within League of Legends and elsewhere. She’s dealt with the harassment that seems to come standard for women playing video games, though it’s often exacerbated because of the public nature of the Challenger Series. Among the support she receives, people also levy cruel and gender-based insults at her in forums and on social media, and she’s had to deal with invasive questions about her personal life. Still, she had a goal — prove that women can compete professionally in League of Legends.

“The competition doesn’t mean much to me,” she writes. “I don’t care to be the best in the world. I love playing with a team and accomplishing stuff and being recognized for it. When I set out initially, I wanted to be the first girl in LCS. That was what motivated me. That dream I had I accomplished and yet it is being challenged in such a heartless way.”

Remilia says she’ll definitely stick around for “one more project” in League of Legends, but after that it’s unclear if she’ll try something new. Responding to comments on her Reddit thread, Remilia says she’ll discuss with her teammates and Riot whether it will be “financially viable” for her to remain in the LCS.

“I will weigh playing in the LCS along with my other options but some things are just looking so much better,” she says.

OwnStar car hacker can remotely unlock BMWs, Benz and Chrysler

Last month security researcher Samy Kamkar announced a vulnerability that allowed him to remotely unlock OnStar-enabled GM cars. While that issue has been fixed, it looks like the same vulnerability found in OnStar is also present in BMW Remote, Mercedes’ mbrace and Chrysler’s Uconnect. Kamkar told Engadget via email, “the issue itself is the same exact SSL certificate issue that affected OnStar/GM (which they’ve resolved two weeks ago). It was barely any tweaking of the original system — a few lines of code to add support per vehicle.” Uh oh.

The OwnStar device intercepts communication between a vehicle and its companion app and sends that information — including login information — to Kamkar who then has control of the vehicle via the app and can unlock it.

If you’re feeling smug about your vehicle because Kamkar hasn’t called it out, you might want to curb that. The SSL certificate issue that allows a person to log in to a vehicle is pretty widespread. “Unfortunately it’s prevalent among half the other mobile unlocking apps I’ve tested,” Kamkar said.

A Chrysler spokesperson told Engadget, “Consumer safety and security is our highest priority.” And that it “supports the responsible disclosure and remediation of cyber security vulnerabilities. Consistent with our focus on consumer safety and security FCA US opposes irresponsible disclosure of explicit ‘how to’ information that can help criminals gain unauthorized access to vehicles and vehicle systems.”

Kamkar won’t be releasing the updated code for OwnStar for at least 30 days so the automakers have a chance to update their systems. But if you’re an automaker that hasn’t been called out by hackers or security researchers, you might want to check your systems anyways.

We have contacted BMW and Mercedes Benz for this article and will update when they reply to our queries.

Apple Live TV Service Not Coming Until 2016

Bloomberg reports that Apple will be unable to deliver their rumored live TV-over-internet streaming service for the Apple TV until 2016. Content negotiations are reportedly stalling the launch of the service, which Apple had hoped to be ready for their rumored September 9th media event.

The company wanted to introduce this year a live TV service delivered via the Internet, but is now aiming for 2016, said people familiar with Apple’s plans.

Apparently, pricing of the new TV service is one of the main hurdles in the negotiations. Bloomberg reports that Apple wants to offer “a package of popular channels” for $40/month, a significant discount from the average cable bill.

A new Apple TV set top box, however, is still said to be ready for release. The new Apple TV is rumored to have a touch-based remote control and full app store. Apple is expected to announce the new Apple TV on September 9th.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A making its way to T-Mobile on August 19th for $320

Samsung-Galaxy-TabA-9.7-10

Alongside Samsung’s big Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ announcements from earlier today, the Korean tech giant also has some tablet news. Starting Wednesday, August 19th, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A will be available both in-store and online from T-Mobile for $319.99 off-contract. If you’re not too fond of paying that much up front, you can also pay $0 down and $13.34 per month for 23 months.

It should be noted that the press release doesn’t specify whether the Un-carrier will sell the 8.0-inch or 9.7-inch variant. But based on the pricing structure, we can infer that T-Mobile is selling the larger of the two variants.

The Galaxy Tab A sports a 9.7-inch LCD display with 1024 x 768 resolution, a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410, 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD expansion up to 128GB. It also comes with a big 6,000mAh battery, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front shooter and runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Be sure to check out our full review of both tablets for more information.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ may come in 128GB variants after all

samsung galaxy note 5 first look aa (17 of 41)

The brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are two really great devices. They both sport arguably the biggest and best displays on the market, the speediest processors, and a really attractive design. Unfortunately for many Samsung fans, both large-screened smartphones also come with the same caveats that we saw with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Neither the Note 5 nor the S6 Edge+ feature expandable storage. On top of that, according to the official press release and the Samsung reps here in New York, both devices only come in 32 and 64GB variants, not the larger 128GB option like we’re used to seeing.

That’s too bad, right? Actually, according to the official Samsung website, the manufacturer has both devices listed with 128GB variants, alongside the 32 and 64GB options. Although there’s no pricing information available on the site, the larger storage options appear to be available in a variety of colors for different U.S. carriers.

Galaxy Note 5 128 GB AA

We’re not exactly sure why these storage options are showing up on Samsung’s website. Perhaps Samsung made a mistake, or the company plans on releasing these higher end versions, but not until a later date. We’ll be sure to let you know if we hear anything about this. But for now, tell us – would the addition of a 128GB variant make up for the lack of microSD card support? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Clever cameras detect drunken railway passengers in Japan

World's Most Congested Subway Prepares To Host Olympic Games

Public transportation is often the safest way to get home after an extended happy hour session — unless you fall onto the tracks. While that doesn’t seem like something that would happen very frequently, it is an issue in Japan where 221 people were hit by trains in 2013. With 60 percent of those injuries being a result of drunkenness, railway company JR West has taken steps to ensure passenger safety by equipping the Kyobashi Station with surveillance cameras.

The surveillance cameras (46 in all) will look for signs of inebriation among passengers on the platform, including weaving across the platform (an obvious tell), or staying on a bench for an extended period of time. (What? I just liked this bench.) The surveillance cameras will then alert a station attendant to check and see if the individual needs help. The cameras will not be used to identify people in any way.

Currently the cameras are only in place at the Kyobashi Station, which is on the busy Osaka Loop Line. The station is located near the major commercial and business district of Umeda; during peak hours trains on this line run as frequently as every two minutes. Should the cameras succeed in increasing passenger safety, JR West is prepared to install them in additional stations.

Xbox One to Windows 10 streaming has a hidden video setting

Redditor OomaThurman recently detailed a hidden “very high” video quality setting tucked within the Xbox One’s streaming app. Thurman writes, “Simply edit the userconsoledata in the xbox app folder and change IsInternalPreview to true,” though there are actually a couple of additional steps needed to do that.

The process is pretty straightforward:

  • First, past the string “localappdataPackages” into Explorer on your PC.
  • Find the “Microsoft.XboxApp.” folder and navigate to “Local State” within it.
  • Next, find and open the “userconsoledata” file in a text editor, then search for the ‘IsInternalPreview’ variable.
  • Set that variable to “true” then save and close out the file.

That’s all there is to it. The difference is certainly noticeable, as you can see between the Very High setting in the image at the top of the post versus the High setting in the image immediately above.

The Wirecutter’s best deals: a 6-port charger, battery pack and more

The Wirecutter's best deals: a 6-port charger, battery pack and more

This post was created in partnership with The Wirecutter, a list of the best technology to buy. Read their continuously updated list of deals at TheWirecutter.com.

You may have already seen Engadget posting reviews from our friends at The Wirecutter. Now, from time to time, we’ll also be publishing their recommended deals on some of their top picks. Read on, and strike while the iron is hot — some of these sales could expire mighty soon.

Anker 60W 6-Port Desktop USB Charger

Street Price: $36; MSRP: $100; Deal Price: $24

Here’s a chance to solve all of your USB charging problems with a single device. This is the lowest price we’ve seen on this Anker charger, beating the previous low price by $3. The price is available on both the black and white models.

The Anker 60W charger is our upgrade pick in our guide on the best multiport USB charger. Nick Guy writes, “The Anker 60W is a great pick for all but the most demanding tablet users—and even then, we haven’t found anything more capable.”

Brother HL-L2360DW Monochrome Laser Printer

Street Price: $100; MSRP: $130; Deal Price: $80

Not the best price we’ve ever seen on this printer, but close, and it beats the current street price by $20 in most areas. It’s also only $10 more than the best price we’ve seen on the 2340 at Amazon, which is more or less the same printer.

The Brother HL-L2360DW is our runner-up pick for best cheap printer. Liam McCabe wrote, “The HL-L2360DW is almost identical to the HL-L2340DW [our main pick], and is worth grabbing if it’s cheaper, easier for you to get your hands on, or if you need an Ethernet port. They’re fraternal-twin Brothers (hiyo!). The L2360 can print a few extra pages per minute, but that’s not important—they’re both wicked fast, and you won’t notice the difference.”

IntoCircuit Power Castle 11200mAh Battery Pack Silver

Street Price: $23; MSRP: $90; Deal Price: $13 with code EWABW9UB

It has been almost a month since the last deal on this battery pack, which saw it drop down to $14. This price beats that deal by a dollar, and Prime Day’s lightning deal by $2; however, it only applies to the Silver version. Just use the code EWABW9UBduring checkout.

The IntoCircuit Power Castle is our runner-up pick for the best USB battery pack for travel. However, our new pick, the Anker 2nd Gen Astro E4, is more than twice the price because of this deal. Liam McCabe likes the IntoCircuit because “It takes up a bit less space overall than Anker’s Astro E4 (it’s about the size of a fat portable hard drive), but it also has a smaller battery capacity. Of the finalists, it’s the only one with a numerical charge-level indicator, which is as close as any of these packs comes to having a user interface.”

Deals change all the time, and some of these may have expired. To see an updated list of current deals, please go to The Wirecutter.com.
