Huawei Mate 7S passes through TENAA
Earlier today, an unannounced Huawei-branded smartphone passed through China’s official certification database — TENAA. The high-end handset has been dubbed the Mate 7S and due content included in the report is believed to be targeted at the Asian, European and North American markets.
In terms of design, the render shows a device that looks like a fusion of an HTC One (M8) Max and Samsung’s Galaxy S5, in as much as its got an almost identical backplate to the latter, and a very similar display to the former.
If recent leaks and rumors are anything to go by, the Mate 7S definitely won’t be a slouch when it comes to performance, packing a Kirin chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera.

LG’s premium phones to get a Hi-Fi music service
LG is launching a new Hi-Fi music service later this month, but the company’s not touting it as an Apple Music or a Spotify rival. After all, it will only be accessible through certain devices, particularly its premium phones, which likely includes the LG G4 and its predecessors, the G3 and the G2. The service will be available in 70 countries, including the US, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Russia, China and Italy. LG’s announcement says the songs will have a 24bit/192kHz playback quality and that customers will be able to download two free songs (and buy more at up to 50 percent off) per month. Unfortunately, the company didn’t mention a streaming option, so it’s probably not in the cards. LG also didn’t elaborate on its pricing scheme, but you can monitor the SmartWorld app or www.lgworld.com to find out as soon as the service goes live.

Report: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ pre-orders to begin August 20th in South Korea
2015 has been an interesting time for Samsung thus far. After a less-than-favorable financial fissure in 2014, the company has been on a major image overhaul agenda. TouchWiz has been trimmed down, the Galaxies are now made of glass (well the high-end ones at least), and even the product logos have been refined. As the company prepares for its Unpacked event, new news is leaking out about the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, the phablet-sized follow-up to this spring’s flagship.
A new report out of South Korea indicates that the curved wonder will be up for pre-order on August 20th, for all three of the nation’s main carriers, and that this product may serve to provide better profit margins for the company. While there has yet to be any concrete indication of the actual release of the device, it should presumably follow the official announcement within a matter of weeks.
This would seem all the more pertinent given that Samsung allegedly bumped-up the Unpacked event to avoid combating the iPhone 6S launch; the product ideally needs to be on the shelf and installed in shopper’s mindset before Cupertino can reissue its phablet. The report, for reference, seems to coincide nicely with earlier rumors of an August 21st pre-order date.
Given that there is no Galaxy Note Edge to be offered this year, it will be of great interest to see just how the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus fares: the product will purportedly cost the same amount as the Galaxy S6 Edge did (the device has now begun to see price cuts) and the extra size-factor gives it more of a market than the “smaller” standard smartphone supplied. New reports are even claiming that the S6 Edge Plus will have some extra features, though still nothing comparable to the Note Edge.
The current “known” specs for the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus include a 5.67 inch Super AMOLED Quad HD display with an Exynos 7420 octa-core processor and 4GB RAM. It is said to feature 32GB of internal storage that is non-expandable, a 5MP front facing camera, 16Mp rear camera with 4K Ultra HD video recording, LTE Cat 6 offering 300 Mbps download speeds, Wi-Fi n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, NFC and a fingerprint sensor. The handset will launch running Android 5.1 Lollipop and will reportedly come with Samsung Pay, which ties in with previous reports of a September release for Samsung’s payment solution, though select users in South Korea are already experimenting with it.
With the Unpacked event having gone from weeks to days to mere hours at this point (depending on the time zone of choice) the truth will be told when it unfolds for all the world to witness. Presumably then, if not sooner, additional information regarding international pre-order availability will also be disclosed.

Google Drive web viewer can open files using compatible apps
You can easily launch files within applications on your PCs or Macs from the Google Drive folder, but now you can also do so straight from the cloud service’s web viewer. If you have the viewer loaded on your browser, right click on a file to preview it, then access the “Open With” drop-down menu to see the list of apps you can use. Or, you can just click “Open” to launch the file through the default app associated with it — PDFs, for instance, can instantly fire up Adobe Reader, while photos can open Preview, Photoshop and any other image editor. You need to make sure the GDrive installed on your computer is the latest version (v. 1.23+), and you need to sync your files. Once that’s done, you’ll be able to access your Drive’s contents more quickly.

Apple Updates Boot Camp With Windows 10 Support
Apple today released an update to Boot Camp with support for Microsoft Windows 10, according to a new support document. The update, Boot Camp 6, is still propagating and is not yet available for OS X. However, several MacRumors forum members have noted the update is available within Windows partitions in Boot Camp, Apple’s tool to allow Intel Mac owners to dual boot OS X and Windows.
Boot Camp 6 also includes support for several Mac features within Windows 10, including USB 3, USB-C, Thunderbolt, built-in SD and SDXC card slots, built-in or external Apple SuperDrives, and the Apple keyboard, mouse and trackpad.
Windows 10 support is only available on select Macs with OS X Yosemite and the latest version of Boot Camp, which will automatically download the support software (drivers) needed to use Windows 10 on a Mac.
Boot Camp requires an authentic copy of Windows 10 for a new installation, which can be purchased from Microsoft in an ISO file or USB stick for $119. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users can upgrade to Windows 10 for free from within their Windows partition as long as the user’s software is completely up to date.
Apple team-up promises more diversity among tech interns
Apple knows that improving the diversity of its workforce doesn’t just depend on hiring more workers, or dishing out scholarships — it also has to recruit a wider range of interns that could eventually become permanent staff. To that end, it’s partnering with the career accelerator Code2040 to offer paid internships to black and Latino college students. Apple will start by taking on 10 of the 80 computer science fellows in Code2040’s 2016 class, and will pick up two more interns beyond that.
That’s a drop in the bucket when Apple has thousands of corporate workers. Also, it’s relatively late to embracing Code2040 when the likes of Facebook, LinkedIn, Jawbone and Tumblr (now Yahoo) have all gone first. You have to get started at some point, though, and this shows that a growing number of San Francisco Bay Area companies are aware that diversity is a holistic challenge — you can’t just focus on one or two areas and hope that everything will work out.

Even the world’s no.1 PC maker finds selling smartphones tough
Lenovo is the biggest PC maker in the world, but smartphones remain a challenge. The company’s mobile arm announced a pre-tax loss of $292 million for the three months ending in June: Motorola phones shipped stood at 5.9 million, down just less than a third from last year. The company now plans to cut 10 percent of its non-manufacturing jobs (roughly 3,200 people), aiming to save around $650 million in the second half of 2015. It’s also writing down $300 million in unsold phones. The company’s total net profit dropped 51 percent year-on-year, down to $105 million.
Lenovo’s chief exec, Yang Yuanqing, told Reuters that he stands by the acquisition of Motorola, which cost $2.91 billion in 2014. He added that restructuring Motorola and Lenovo’s smartphone divisions will take two to three quarters. This looks likely to cost $600 million, due to the “toughest market environment in recent years” — likely why the company is trying all sorts of gambits.

Ingress creator Niantic Labs leaving Google to become an independent company
Surely, you have heard of Ingress, the Google-backed augmented reality game that has been downloaded over 12 million times and has all these players frantically hacking portals all over the city. This game, along with Field Trip, was created by Niantic Labs, a group that was incubated within Google. They have now grown large enough and are looking to expand… independently.
The developer has taken it to the Ingress Google+ page to tell us they are separating themselves from the Search Giant and becoming an independent company.
“Important Account Information: Niantic Labs is becoming an independent company. We’ll be taking our unique blend of exploration and fun to even bigger audiences with some amazing new partners joining Google as collaborators and backers.”
What does this mean for gamers? Not so much – you will be able to continue playing as you always have. Niantic Inc will take data you agreed to share with Google, including gameplay and contact information (email). You will get a notice about this transfer 30 days from today.
Regardless, there should be no direct changes for users (at least not right away), but you may notice the company will begin to delve into new ventures. The idea behind this move would be to allow Niantic to work more closely with investors and partners. It will help them explore and expand without having to ask big Google for permission.
