You can now control your Android phone from Windows 10 (with a little tinkering)

Windows 10 Photos app

Why is it we still can’t control our smartphones with our computers? It’s 2015, guys – this should be an added feature, but the differences in platforms slows things down a bit. With the upgrade to Windows 10 spreading and introducing Cortana, though, it is now possible to send commands to your phone (and other things) from your PC.

Sadly, this is not exactly an included feature and will require a few software downloads. The set-up process is not the smoothest, either, but once you get things right it will be possible to do some amazing things. Possible actions include managing your smart products (lights, thermostat, etc.), controlling music, adjusting Android notification settings and more. The possibilities are only limited by what Tasker can and can’t do.

Android apps weekly

The process was put together by João Dias, a very popular Tasker plug-in developer. As expected, you will need Tasker installed in your smartphone in order to use these Cortana voice commands, as well as AutoVoice and AutoRemote. In addition, your Windows 10 machine will need to have the AutoRemote Chrome Extension installed.

Once all is in place, the user needs only enable Cortana commands, as well as allowing for sending Cortana commands to your devices. Once that is done, simply import this profile to Tasker, on your Android smartphone. Setting Chrome as your default browser is also a requisite, so make sure to do that if you haven’t.

That’s not too bad, right? If you haven’t been scared away by these instructions and want in on the action, go ahead and give it a try. Just keep in mind getting this functionality won’t come free. The Tasker Android app costs $6.49, and AutoRemote is priced at $3.35. All other software is free, though.

Are any of you doing this? Sadly, I am still on the wait-list for the Windows 10 upgrade, but please hit the comments and let us know how it’s all working for you!

Dr. Dre’s ‘Compton’ is an Apple Music exclusive

If you want to listen to Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre before it arrives on Friday, Apple Music has you covered. Cupertino’s streaming service will offer an “exclusive” stream of Dr. Dre’s new album starting Thursday at 9 PM ET and running to 12 AM ET when it’s officially released. Compton was inspired by Dre’s work on the N.W.A. film Straight Outta Compton that hits theaters August 14th. When it arrives on August 7th, the album will be an iTunes/Apple Music exclusive, making it one of the first high-profile releases for Tim Cook & Co. Of course, since Dr. Dre officially works for Apple now, having a show on Beats1 and all, it’s no surprise that his new project would only be available through the service.

For those of you who are still waiting on Detox, it won’t be released. During an episode of his Beats1 show “The Pharmacylast week, Dr. Dre said ditched that album entirely after releasing two singles because “it wasn’t good.” If those first two tracks were any indication, it was probably for the best, despite the masses clamoring to hear the follow up to The Chronic: 2001.

(function(d, s, id) var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

Listen to the premiere of #COMPTON uncensored and exclusively on Apple Music, from 6PM – 9PM PT Thursday August 6th. Album out August 7th. PRE ORDER NOW: http://smarturl.it/Compton

Intel tackles diversity problem through referral bonuses

LeadOn:Watermark's Silicon Valley Conference For WomenIf the Ellen Pao case showed us anything, it’s that Silicon Valley is still very much a (white) boy’s club. In response a number of industry leaders including Apple, IBM, and Google, have pledged anywhere from $50 million to $300 million to boost the level of diversity in their workplaces. Intel is the latest firm to address the issue by doubling the referral bonus for any employee that successfully recruits a female, minority or veteran into the company to a whopping $4000. This is part of Intel’s $300 million pledge to diversify its workforce.

“Intel is committed to increase the diversity of our workforce,” Intel said in a statement. “We are currently offering our employees an additional incentive to help us attract diverse qualified candidates in a competitive environment for talent.” Women only make up 20 percent of Intel’s current workforce, less than half of the national 47 percent average. Only 45 percent of its workers were black, latino or veterans — more than half of the company is white males.

Project Tango development kits get availability details

project tango development tabletIf you’ve been itching to buy a Project Tango development kit, Google has clarified some availability for the tablets. They’ll be available in South Korea and Canada starting today, with many other countries following on August 26th.

Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are on the list slated for availability by the end of the month, joining the US, Canada, and South Korea. That’s a pretty full list of places to pick up one of these if you’re interested in developing for it.

Google says they’ve shipped over 3000 units so far, and they’re working on promoting the platform and running some contests to keep the community growing and interest up. Hopefully we’ll see some real-world applications make their way to the public once these things really take off.

MLB’s Advanced Media arm inks deal to create content for NHL

National Hockey League And Major League Baseball Make Joint AnnouncementThe National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Baseball Advanced Media, MLB’s interactive and online broadcast arm, have come to terms on a deal that would give the NHL access to the same Emmy award-winning production assets that the MLB enjoys. The six year deal would effectively create “a fully integrated global hub of digital content that encompasses video, live game streaming, social media, fantasy, apps, along with statistical and analytical content.” Basically, all the cool stuff that baseball fans enjoy at MLB.com is coming to hockey fans at the start on next year.

So the deal is this: MLBAM will get distribution rights to all live out-of-market games, including everything broadcast through GameCenter Live and NHL Center Ice. What’s more, MLBAM will also now run NHL.com and all of its subsidiary team sites and any associated apps. However the NHL and its individual teams will retain editorial control over what gets published. In return, MLBAM will provide the NHL with studio space and production resources. MLBAM is expected to take over the revamped NHL sites in January 2016.

“As the market leader, MLBAM is uniquely qualified to assist us in giving hockey fans a richer, more immersive experience with the game,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “MLBAM is also the right partner because they have the expertise to help us deliver new and exciting products to our fans, who crave compelling digital content. We couldn’t have North America better covered than with the power of NBC, Rogers, TVA and MLBAM – an incredible convergence of technical, creative and production talent that is great news for our fans.”

Cellular Service Outage Affecting Users in Southeastern United States

AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile customers in the southeastern United States may be seeing a widespread cellular outage that’s preventing them from using voice and data services. Downdetector.com is showing outages in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Indiana, and Mississippi for all four carriers.

cellularoutagemap
According to a Sprint representative that spoke to Re/code, the issue is related to a local exchange provider that works with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

“We are aware of the impacts to service in which customers across multiple carriers may be unable to access voice and some data services,” the Sprint representative said. “This appears to be an issue caused by a local exchange provider and our network team is working with the provider to restore service to impacted customers as quickly as possible.”

Sprint said the company is working on a fix, as did representatives from Verizon and AT&T. AT&T said it’s working to restore service, while Verizon said its engineers were working with “vendor partners” to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

It is not clear when service will be restored for affected customers.
