Google Maps for Android update will allow you to hide interface elements and share saved maps
A new Google Maps for Android update that will soon be released will bring a new “full-screen view” feature that will let you hide away all unnecessary user interface distractions while navigating a map. With a single tap, Maps will automatically hide away all distractions such as the search bar that can cover map content to give you a full-screen view of your map. Unfortunately, according to Android Police, the new map view feature will not be supported during turn-by-turn navigation. Another feature that the new 9.1 Maps update will bring is the ability to share saved maps. Finally, you will now have the ability to edit the caption of location tagged photos that are available in “your places” section of the app.
Google hasn’t rolled the update yet and if you don’t want to wait to get the new features of Google Maps 9.1, Android Police has the app update available for download.

Withings’ Activité and Activité Pop Updated With Swim Tracking Capabilities [iOS Blog]
Withings’ Activité and Activité Pop are two of only a handful of activity trackers on the market that are entirely waterproof, and as of today, the two devices are able to be used to track swimming. Swim detection is a feature that Withings has long promised and will be a welcome addition for customers who bought the activity trackers to track their swim movements.

We appreciate your patience. We’ve heard your requests. And we’re OVERJOYED to announce swim tracking is here. pic.twitter.com/Mok3wr1o8m
— Withings (@Withings) July 7, 2015
Following today’s firmware update, Activité fitness trackers will be able to automatically detect swim motions, recording a swimming session as a workout as the device does for other activities like running. Activity and workout information is then available for viewing within the accompanying Withings Health Mate app.
Activité Pop automatically recognizes swim. Just put it on, dive in and the watch will log your full session and record calories burned.
Both of the Withings activity trackers are water resistant down to 50 meters, or 164 feet, a feature that many of the popular activity trackers on the market cannot match.
Even Apple’s own Apple Watch is not rated for swimming, but several people have opted to test the waterproofing of the device and have found that it does seem to be able to be used in the water with no consequence. Still, Apple does not recommend that it be used when swimming or showering, unlike the Activité, which can be used reliably in both situations.
Withings’ Activité and Activité Pop can be purchased from the Withings website for $450 and $149.95, respectively.
Virgin’s new in-flight WiFi is strong enough to stream video
Virgin America has announced that it’s teaming up with satellite internet company ViaSat to provide the fastest in-flight WiFi of any commercial carrier. The new system uses a hybrid Ku-/Ka-band receiver to deliver an internet pipeline eight to 10 times faster than anything else on the market. The Ka-band alone offers a whopping 140 gigabits-per-second throughput. It’s being installed on the company’s new fleet of A320 airliners and will be put into service on Hawaii-bound routes starting next year. That alone is a big accomplishment as the rest of the airline’s fleet have to rely on ground-based WiFi connections, which don’t work over the ocean’s expanse. Virgin touts that this in-flight connection will be equivalent to an average home broadband link and users are expected to use it as such, streaming videos, watching the carrier’s 18 channels of DishNetwork and surfing the internet with abandon — just at 35,000 feet.

Palette’s modular controller is ready to steer your creative apps
Palette crowdfunded its unique modular controller in the hopes of giving you customizable, hands-on control over your creative apps, and it’s finally ready to make that technology available to everyone. As of today, you can pre-order Palette kits that scale up depending on just how much tactile fine-tuning you want. The base is a $199 kit with a dial, two buttons and a slider; the $299 Expert and $499 Professional kits throw in more gear, and you can even snag an $899 limited edition in cherry wood. Of course, you can also buy individual parts if you need more. The controller is mostly useful if you thrive in Adobe software like Photoshop and Premiere Pro, but it’s also helpful in MIDI music, gaming and most any other program where keyboard shortcuts just don’t feel right.

RIP New Music Tuesday. Hello New Music Friday.
If you’re like me, your Tuesday morning ritual includes browsing the New Releases section of your go-to streaming service. Did you notice the list didn’t change today? Whether it’s Apple Music, Rdio, Spotify, Tidal or another app, you’ll have to wait a little longer this week to get your new music fix. Why? Well, this is the week the music industry transitions from releasing albums on Tuesdays to doing so on Friday. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), an organization that’s “the voice of recording industry worldwide” and represents over 1,300 record companies, opted for the switch to cut down on piracy. By establishing a global release day each week, IFPI looks to cure the woes caused by albums being available in some countries before others.
It also hopes to drive album sales since folks are more likely to use the weekend to hit retail stores or goof off on a computer or mobile device. So, unfortunately, you’ll have to grind through the work week without new releases from Veruca Salt, Tyrese, Owl City, Ghostface Killah and others until Friday. Of course, this also takes some fun out of mid-week procrastination. Bummer.

The OnePlus 2 will come with 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM

Another day, another OnePlus 2 specification confirmed by the new smartphone manufacturer. OnePlus has just announced that the OnePlus 2 will feature 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which will bring faster loading times, smooth gameplay and a slew of energy saving features to the device.
From OnePlus:
Another notable benefit is lower power consumption for better battery efficiency. That means you’ll be able to use your favorite apps (and more) without draining the battery. With LPDDR4, you get twice the bandwidth performance as the LPDDR3 at the same power consumption profile. The RAM of the OnePlus 2 uses a lower operating voltage than its predecessor, decreasing from 1.2V to 1.1V. And with speeds up to 32 GB/s, it is also twice as fast as the LPDDR3.
If you’re still unsure of what LPDDR4 means, or maybe you’d like to dive in a bit deeper, our very own Rob Triggs explained it very clearly in his post “LPDDR4 – everything you need to know“.

OnePlus also claims that this will be the last OnePlus 2 announcement until the July 27th unveiling, so we’ll have to wait until then to hear anything more from the company. Aside from the 4GB of RAM, the OnePlus 2 will also feature a fingerprint scanner that’s “faster than Touch ID”, a USB Type-C port, a Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor and possibly an all-metal chassis. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has also confirmed that the device will be sold for less than $450.
This is certainly shaping up to be quite the smartphone, and we can’t wait to test it out. Although the OnePlus posts may die down over the next few days, we’ll be sure to let you know if we hear anything regarding the new handset.

Cityglance, an app that aims to connect users together on public transportation, is now available in the US
Cityglance, an app that aims to connect users on public transportation, is now available to download via the Play Store in the United States.
Public transport carriers hundreds of millions, if not billions of people every day, and most of the time, passengers don’t know anyone on their bus or train. Cityglance aims to help you connect with people you find interesting by sending them “glances.”
Some cool features this particular app has is the ability the share thoughts and photos to Cityglance. There are also ways to report malfunctions and delays to other people that have Cityglance. It’s essentially Facebook, only specifically for the travelling community.
Click here to view the embedded video.
The only problem with an app like this is that a lot of people need to have it for it work properly, and at this point, there’s less than 5,000 installs. If you’d like to take it for a spin and see what Cityglance is all about, scan the QR code or hit the download link below.
