HTC Zoe gains Chromecast support

HTC on Thursday rolled out an update to its Zoe photo and video editing application for Android. As part of the new version users will find they can now cast Zoe videos from a smartphone directly to a Chromecast-connected TV or monitor.

The refreshed app allows for users more easily adjust, remove clips, re-order clips, and more. Additionally, the app app will automatically retry to send failed uploads; playback continues immediately when a phone’s orientation is changed. Previously, changing the direction of the device would restart the videos.

What’s new:

  • Chromecast support. Stream Zoes directly to your Chromecast-enabled devices.
  • Content reordering. Choose which photos and videos to include in your Zoe, and the order in which they are shown.
  • Streamlined uploads. Easily retry uploads if the network connection is interrupted.

CBS app now casting current and previous shows

cbs_chromecast

CBS today announced its mobile apps are now Chromecast-ready, meaning you can watch your favorite shows and (where applicable) live television through the Google dongle. As part of the new update users will find they can cast content from CBS All Access subscriptions, essentially 7,000 TV episodes worth of media.

Although there are some shows and content to watch for free, CBS All Access is where you’ll find the full library. For $5.99 you’ll have on-demand access to current shows, previous shows and seasons, and classics. In roughly 20 markets it’s also possible to stream live CBS stations.

CBS All Access app gets Chromecast support (Update: Fox and FXNow, too)

CBS All Access was already available for folks who fancy Roku devices, and now the television streaming app plays nice with Chromecast. The network updated both the Android and iOS versions to beam shows like Big Bang Theory, The Good Wife and NCIS to your TV via Google’s $35 dongle. If you’ll recall, the CBS subscription service offers on-demand streaming for $6 a month, and users in select locales (like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia — to name a few) can access live TV, too. And that list of local affiliates is expanding on the regular. Prefer to log in from your computer? Using Chrome and Google Cast browser extension, you can send the show you’re watching to Chromecast from there as well. As far as the mobile software goes, you’ll want to be sure to grab the latest versions from iTunes and Google Play in order to make it work with the living room accessory.

Update: CBS isn’t the only one adding Chromecast support to its streaming apps today. Fox updated the FOX Now and FXNow software for both iOS and Android to deliver the same functionality there. That tacks on Google’s compact streamer to a list of supported devices that includes Roku, Xbox, Apple TV and more. Not to be left out, HGTV added casting support, too.

Microsoft will push mobile-friendly websites in its search results

Bing points out a mobile-friendly website

Google isn’t the only big internet company that will promote mobile-friendly websites in its search results — Microsoft says it will soon give higher rankings to mobile-optimized sites in Bing. While the company won’t push these sites at all costs (it’s still interested in giving you the most relevant links), it expects these tuned pages to float closer to the top. To help things along, it’s planning to release a tool that tells site operators whether or not their content is ready for smaller screens. Microsoft doesn’t expect to roll out this updated search code for another few months, but it shouldn’t be too long before the days of constant zooming and scrolling are over.

‘Rainbow Six Siege’ raids PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 13th

Rainbow Six Siege

While The Division might not be launching in 2015 (it was pushed back to early 2016), you’ll have at least one way to get your Tom Clancy gaming fix this year. Ubisoft has announced that Rainbow Six Siege will ship worldwide on October 13th. The counter-terrorist raid shooter will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and players who pre-order will have guaranteed access to a closed beta test. It’s hard to say if this title will do justice to the original Rainbow Six games it’s trying to follow, but you’ll know for sure in about five months.

Sunrise calendar app tweaks your keyboard for easy scheduling

If you’re as big a fan of the Sunrise calendar app as the folks at Microsoft, scheduling meetings just got a lot easier. There’s a new feature called Meet that adds a tab to your device’s keyboard offering quick and easy access to your availability. Not only can you immediately see what time slots you have free without navigating elsewhere, but you can select a handful of options to send to your colleagues, friends and family. Once they decide what works best, Sunrise automatically schedules the event for you. And it even works for folks who aren’t using the app. All of that means that you’ll save a significant amount of time inputting dates and swiping through multiple apps. Itchin’ to give it a go? Both the Android and iOS versions have been updated with the new tool, so you can start thinking about what you’ll do with all of that extra time.

Apple wants to stop RadioShack from selling your data

Everything must go at RadioShack, including your data

When RadioShack went bankrupt, it put shoppers’ data up for sale alongside its brand name and stores. Well, Apple isn’t happy with that data scattering to the four winds — it’s joining AT&T and other objectors by filing a motion to block attempts to sell customers’ information. The Cupertino crew argues that the info isn’t part of RadioShack’s bankruptcy estate, and that selling off this content would breach both Apple’s privacy policy as well as a reseller deal. There’s no question that the motion is as much about protecting Apple’s hide as it is yours (the company doesn’t want to lose data to competitors), but it could mean a lot if it prevents a shady marketing firm from annoying you down the road.

HTC Car app gets moved into the Play Store for easy updating

htc_car_app_icon

The HTC Car app claimed a new home in the Play Store this morning. Owners of select HTC devices will notice that an update has been pushed to the device; however, there is not actually an update. The changelog reads “Now available for updates on the Play Store.” Doing so allows HTC to easily update its app that enables car mode for drivers. Rather than making users wait for device software updates, changes can be made from the Play Store.

Could this move have anything to do with the company’s potential push into automobiles? We will have to wait and see.

CBS, FOX, HGTV, and others update their apps to support Chromecast

Chromecast_product-image

Chromecast owners have six new apps to consume content from starting today. CBS, FOX, FX, HGTV, Pluto TV, and Haystack TV all have update their respective apps to support Chromecast. Streaming content from some these networks, such as CBS, will cost money while others simply require television provider authentication. This all means that Chromecast owners have even more content to be devoured.

Want to watch Empire? Louie? Or what about Property Brothers? There are now apps with Chromecast support for that.
