New York Stock Exchange begins monitoring bitcoin value

Bitcoin’s march toward legitimacy just took a hop, skip and jump with the news that the New York Stock Exchange is going to start monitoring its value. The NYSE Bitcoin Index (NYBXT) will keep a beady eye on how much the cryptocurrency is worth, relative to the US dollar, with the data being pulled from Coinbase. That way, investment types can get a quick read on how bitcoin is doing at any one time, with the value being updated at 11:00 AM ET each day.

Essentially, bitcoin will look and feel like any other foreign currency market on the NYSE’s ticker. Investors looking to make some money can put their cash into bitcoin and hopefully take it out, when its value increases.

Those who are curious as to why the data is being pulled from Coinbase should note that NYSE made a small investment in the business earlier this year. The exchange has pledged, however, that if other bitcoin exchanges can meet its rigorous quality standards, they’ll be allowed to join the index at some point in the future. Between this and the impending launch of the Winklevoss-backed Gemini exchange, it looks like New York’s financial district is the place to be for would-be bitcoin speculators.

Hillary Clinton’s emails won’t be released until January 2016

US-ELECTIONS-CLINTON

The emails that Hillary Clinton sent as Secretary of State from a private account will eventually be released to the public, but not as quickly as some had hoped. Government lawyers reportedly revealed in new court papers, filed in relation to a Vice News Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, that the correspondence won’t be published until January 15th, 2016. That’s a long wait, especially as Clinton has already launched her 2016 presidential campaign in the US. Her privately-controlled email address, first revealed by the New York Times, is an issue because she used it for all of her work-related correspondence. Under federal law, emails sent and received by officials are supposed to be archived so that oversight committees, historians and the press can examine them.

The former Secretary of State has since handed over 55,000 pages of emails to the State Department and stressed that she wants them to be released “as soon as possible.” As Vice News reports, the new court documents filed on Monday reveal that sorting and analysing the emails has proven quite the challenge for the government, and that the team working on them won’t be finished until the end of the year. Clinton is undoubtedly keen to get this whole episode behind her, but until the messages are released, the criticism surrounding her actions and the content of the emails is unlikely to subside.

LG busts out budget and Note-style versions of the G4

LG’s leather-clad flagship hits stores this week, but no blockbuster device can come to the party without its squad in tow. That’s why, in addition to the G4, the company is outing the Galaxy Note-troubling G4 Stylus and the budget-level G4c. Much like its immediate rival, the G4 Stylus comes with a 5.7-inch display and that famous Rubberdium(TM) pencil for scribbling. You may, however, be upset to spot that the device comes with a few downgrades on its relative, with the 13-megapixel camera a small downgrade on the 16-megapixel lens on the original. Oh, and if you’re looking to pick one up in North America or Korea, you’ll have to ask the assistant for a G Stylo, because someone in a marketing department was paid too much money.

Meanwhile, the previously leaked LG G4c is a stripped down kid brother to the G4, with a 5-inch HD display. Rounding out the spec list, you’ll find a 1.2GHz quad-core chip and a vanilla 8-megapixel camera that loses LG’s much-trumpeted laser auto focus feature. The battery’s also been shrunk in the wash, which now clocks in at 2,540mAh, down from the 3,000 you’ll find in the other two. If you’re looking to snag either one, the company promises that they’ll arrive in “key strategic markets in the weeks to come,” with pricing to be announced when they launch in each individual country.

Pandora buys analytics company to get more out of your streaming data

In order to serve up its song suggestions, Pandora collects listener data based on those thumbs up and thumbs down votes you tap in. The music streaming option announced today that it acquired Next Big Sound: an analytics company that will help turn that data into valuable marketing (read: ad) fuel. Next Big Sound offers the tools to properly break all of that user info down — especially in regards to social media chatter — for artists, labels and others. You may not have heard of Next Big Sound, but you may have seen its work: the company provides the stats for Billboard’s charts, including the Social 50. Pandora already had its own tools for artists to examine user data, and now it joins the likes of Spotify and Apple by bringing in outside help to make its stockpile of info more useful. If you’ll recall, Spotify swiped Echo Nest last year, a company that uses music analysis to power radio options for Rdio and others — similar to Pandora’s Music Genome Project.

Barnes and Noble slashes prices on its Nook tablet lineup

Everyone loves a deal. If you’re in the market for a new tablet, Barnes and Noble may be a seller worth exploring. Entering early into the Android tablet space some years ago, with the release of the Nook Color, Barnes and Noble has seen growth in their content delivery service. Since B&N’s initial foray into the the tablet space, the world’s largest retail book conglomerate has expanded its Nook lineup to include 7 inch and 10 inch variants from Samsung. The relatively low cost and high availability of these devices have made them very attractive for entry level users looking for the best tablet and eReader ecosystem without becoming a member for an expensive service like Amazon Prime.

From now until Saturday June 13, Barnes and Noble is offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 7.0 for $149.99 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 10.1 for $279.99. As tablets go this is kind of a steal. If you have a tablet to trade in, the deal gets even better. Users trading in an iPad 4, for example, can get up to $200 in trade-in value. This in a stark contrast to users with a Nexus device that will get either $25 or $100 for trading their devices. This is of course dependent on size of the device. The bigger the screen, the bigger the trade-in. Both Nook devices yield similar specs in terms of size, camera, etc. The real differentiating qualities are how much storage you can add (the 7in tablet can expand to 32gb where the 10in can expand to 64gb) and the size of the screen. B&N is touting this as a “Dads and Grads” kind of sale. Will this be on shopping list this month?  Father’s day is, of course, just around the corner.

Microsoft has released a beta program this morning that brings the usual suite of office apps to your Android smartphone. Before the beta testing the apps were only available for Android based tablets, not phones. Now Microsoft is scaling the apps to be usable on all our beloved devices. In doing so the apps listing in the Play Store have now dropped the “for tablet” listing and are just the apps traditional name.

However, one can not simply install the app to your phone via the Play Store. Rather you will need to join the Microsoft Office for Android community and become a tester. Once in you will be able to grab the beta versions of each app to utilize. The company just pushed this information out at 8:20 a.m. this morning so there is likely going to be a few hours where things haven’t fully propagated through to let you access them. The original G+ post reflects some having access to Word, but not to Excel and Powerpoint just yet.

Head on over to the Microsoft Office for Android community and get signed up to be a tester when you get a chance. The same post will also link you to the beta test versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Sales of Samsung Galaxy S6 reach 10 million units

Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Back_Lower_S6_Logo_02_TA

Samsung is expecting big things from the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge this year. After last year’s Galaxy S5 missed sales targets, it’s imperative that the Galaxy S6 get off to a great start.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge have been available for a little over month now, and it appears that Samsung is on track for a very solid year. They just announced that sales of the Galaxy S6 have reached 10 million units.

Now that might sound like exciting news, but it’s important to understand that both the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 reached 10 million units in their respective first months as well. So this doesn’t indicate that the S6 / S6 Edge are on a better trend. The key will be sustainability, which the Galaxy S5 lacked. There’s always some excitement when a smartphone launches, but many consumers are still under contract and are unable to buy it if they wanted to. Samsung will need to continue to capture the consumer’s attention with more marketing as other phones like the LG G4 launch and attempt to steal their market share.

Analysts still expect a solid year for both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge as they are estimating that 70 million units will be sold. If that happens, there will be a lot of celebration in Korea later this year.
