Xiaomi starts small with a UK online accessory store

Xiaomi is about to enter the UK market, but it won’t be selling the Android phones and tablets it’s best known for. Mimicking its plans for the US, the company is starting with an online accessory store for its Mi-branded headphones, battery packs and fitness trackers. Xiaomi will be taking orders from midday on May 19th, but be warned, as the store has been firmly branded with the “beta” label. As Android Authority reports, this means that all of the accessories will be available in limited quantities — so once Xiaomi has sold through its pre-determined amounts, that’ll be it. Game over. Products will ship directly from Xiaomi’s warehouses in China, so be aware that you might have to pay some import duties. Clearly, Xiaomi is using this limited launch to test the UK’s waters, but who knows, if it’s successful maybe we’ll see a full-time store selling its flagship Mi Note in the future.

Netflix in talks to offer its streaming library in China

President Underwood is already popular in China, but it looks like Netflix is prepping to offer more of its streaming library in that locale. The Wall Street Journal reports that Reed Hastings & Co. are in talks with online broadcasters BesTV and Wasu to expand its reach outside of the US. Negotiations are said to be in the early stages as issues like objectionable subject matter and restrictions on foreign content are details to be ironed out. And by objectionable, we mean sex, violence and political content — like the House of Cards plot that chronicled the corruption of a Chinese businessman. Wasu hopes to stream to phones and other devices, and Netflix revealed a desire to send “original and other globally-licensed content” by “operating a small service” in China earlier this year. Back in February, Netflix announced plans to launch in Japan this fall, so the global expansion seems to be progressing nicely for the streaming service.

Apple Watch Production Back on Track After ‘Labor Shortages’ Caused Initial Delays

Apple WatchThe Apple Watch has been in high demand since the wearable began accepting pre-orders over a month ago, with the first wave of Space Black Link Bracelet, Leather Loop, and Modern Buckle just now shipping to customers this week.

A few reports have pointed to defective Taptic Engines produced by an Apple supplier in Shenzhen, China as the main reason behind the bottleneck, but a new story today out of DigiTimes suggests dramatic labor shortages during the Lunar New Year could have been the main source of the Apple Watch’s low yield rate in the weeks after launch.

“Because of labor shortages during the Lunar New Year holidays, Quanta was forced to borrow manpower from other manufacturers and was only able to deliver limited shipments in the first quarter,” said Quanta vice chairman CC Leung. “However, Quanta already has sufficient capacity to manufacture all the orders and should see a giant contribution from its wearable device business in the second quarter.”

Interestingly, Leung never mentions Apple or the Apple Watch by name and even “declined to state the name of its client or its products,” according to DigiTimes. The vice chairman did note, however, that the wearable in question is “unlike the smartwatches it produced before” and that it “has a lot of functions in it and its client is satisfied with the product.” Given that the Apple Watch’s unit shortage is very public knowledge and considering that Quanta is the primary source of its manufacturing, it would appear that the “smartwatch” in question is the Apple Watch.

Rumors of a limited Apple Watch supply began just a few weeks after the wearable was announced at Apple’s “Spring Forward” event in March. Although the Apple Watch’s supply has been strained, Apple confirmed before the Apple Watch launch that some models may arrive before their estimated delivery dates, with many 4-6 week shipping estimates improving dramatically for some customers.

Although there are exceptions, most Apple Watch orders placed today have between a 2-3 week and 3-5 week estimate for the smaller 38mm case size, while most models in the 42mm size are sitting on a delivery estimate of July. But, with today’s possible hint at an even more amped up production line alongside Apple’s already impressive attempt to come in ahead of delivery expectations, it’s still possible many orders will reach their owners ahead of time.

Next-Generation iPhone Again Rumored to Have 12-Megapixel Camera

iPhone 6 CameraKevin King, IHS Technology Research Director for China, claimed on Chinese microblogging service Weibo that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with smaller pixels (via G4Games), corroborating the same prediction made by well-informed KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this week.

Apple has used an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera sensor since the iPhone 4s was released in late 2011, so the megapixel bump will be the first in nearly four years if the pair of analysts are correct. Prior to that, the iPhone 4 had a 5-megapixel camera and the iPhone 3GS had a 3-megapixel shooter. Given that megapixels don’t always matter, however, software improvements are often more important for image quality.

Last November, well-known Apple pundit John Gruber of Daring Fireball said the next iPhone could have “the biggest camera jump ever” with a dual-lens system that delivers DSLR-quality imagery, but a later report dismissed the rumor since Apple would need to redesign the current chassis of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which is unlikely for this year’s refresh based on the history of “S” models.

Apple’s next-generation iPhones are rumored to retain 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screen sizes, powered by an A9 processor with 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM and featuring Force Touch, improved Touch ID recognition, gesture control support, an additional microphone near the speakers for improved voice quality, a new rose gold color option, internal mechanical design changes and more.

Xiaomi beta testing its UK accessory store

    Xiaomi mi.com beta

Xiaomi may be busy expanding its smartphone business around Asia, Brazil and India, but the company also has time for us over here in the UK too. Xiaomi will be beta testing the launch of its UK online accessories store with a limited quantity sale next week.

Starting from May 19th at 12pm GMT, customers will be able to purchase a small selection of Mi branded accessories from Mi.com. To start with, limited quantities for the very reasonably priced 5000mAh and 10400mAh Mi power banks, the Mi Band fitness tracker, and Mi Headphones will be available to purchase.

However, one important point to note is that the products will be shipped directly from Xiaomi’s warehouses in China, meaning that UK customers will still have to pay import duties on any goods purchased. Small, cheap purchases, such as the power banks and Mi band might just slip under the £15 VAT free limit for imports from outside of the EU, depending on the GBP retail price and shipping costs.

Fortunately, Xiaomi will display the costs at checkout and handle the payment of taxes and duties on your behalf, to avoid any nasty surprises. You can read more about tax and duty here, to better understand the extra costs.

If you want to grab yourself something from the store  next week, you can already sign up for a Mi Account to save yourself some time and login before the sale starts.

Android 5.1.1 spotted running on the Sony Xperia Z3

    Sony_Xperia_Z3v_Main_02_TA

Sony has been working hard to get Android 5.0 Lollipop on the majority of their devices, and has been quite successful thus far. Now, according to a video from Wayerless, it seems the company is quickly working towards another update, Android 5.1.1, on what seems to be the Sony Xperia Z3.

The video shows a handful of new changes that are happening in the update, such as the Walkman app renamed as Music, new buttery smooth animations, and more. You can check out the video below for a lot of the changes.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Starting out with its Xperia Z3 devices, Sony has been rolling out Lollipop since March, and should finish with the majority of them by July. With how on the ball Sony has been with rolling out the latest Android version to its devices, it shouldn’t be too long before we start seeing Android 5.1.1 updates rolling out soon.

It’s excellent when you have a smartphone that a company is going to actively support. After all, everyone wants the latest and greatest as soon as it comes out. Sony realizes that, too.

Are you looking forward to the new update on your Xperia Z3 this summer? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung might launch another Edge smartphone before the Note 5 Edge

    Samsung_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Front_Top_Samsung_Logo_TA

According to a new report, Samsung is exploring the possibilities of launching yet another Edge-branded smartphone ahead of the Note 5 Edge’s debut in September.

What’s intriguing about this particular rumor is that it doesn’t seem realistic for the South Korean manufacturer to create another smartphone with a three-sided display because it’s presently struggling to increase production of the S6 Edge.

It’s hard to call whether Samsung will have the resources to launch another Edge-branded variant within the next fifteen weeks, but as we know it’s no stranger to pumping out new smartphones at a very fast rate — so only time will tell.

In the meantime, what do you think a next Edge could be? A mid-range device? Or another high-end one? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Designed for Families launching at Google IO, brings a kid-friendly spotlight to the Play Store

    android_developers_families_connection

In an email sent out to Android developers, Google is encouraging companies to opt-in their kid-friendly apps to the Designed for Families program. The deadline is May 28, just in time for a spotlight at Google IO.

Google announced the Designed for Families program mid-April, and has been hard at work preparing it for an official launch at this year’s developer conference, it seems. Of course, with it come a lot of concerns, such as developers sneaking adult-themed content in their allegedly kid-friendly apps. Google will no doubt cover these concerns during their keynote at Google IO. But, in order to have a family friendly spotlight in the Play Store, apps submitted to it will no doubt have to go through an extensive and critical review process.

    designed-for-families-developer-email

If Designed for Families is successful, it will certainly open up a lot of options for Google–a kid-themed Google tablet maybe? Ultimately, it’ll be interesting to see where this goes, especially if it further encourages parents to buy tablets for their children. Look forward to the full scoop on Designed for Families on May 28, at Google IO!

Have you been waiting for a kid-themed spotlight in the Play Store? Would you be excited at the idea of a kid-themed Google tablet? Let us know in the comments.
