Sidecar is starting a weed delivery service in San Francisco
Your next Sidecar ride could be carrying more than passengers and parcels. The ride-sharing company announced that it is teaming with local cannabis service Meadow to bring same-day weed deliveries to medical marijuana patients in San Francisco. The new service will reportedly fulfill orders through the Apothecarium dispensary. Package deliveries already constitute about 10 percent of Sidecar’s ride volume in San Francisco. However, carrying cannabis poses a number of unique challenges — such as ensuring that the person taking delivery is the same person that placed the order.
“There are a lot of reasons we wanted to partner with Sidecar,” Meadow CEO David Hua told BuzzFeed. “Mainly, they’re willing to work within necessary compliance regulations, both San Francisco law and California state laws. [And] they have a delivery network out there that’s already processing orders both on [the] delivery side and passenger side.” Sidecar isn’t saying how many of its drivers will be handling cannabis deliveries, only that “there’s enough to satisfy the expected demand” according to Hua. The company is also looking to expand this service to other cities in the future. But given how reticent many municipalities are towards cannabis deliveries — Los Angeles and San Jose for example, have both banned the practice — that could prove difficult. It will also be interesting to see how Sidecar sizes up against the numerous existing delivery services that many San Francisco dispensaries already operate.

NVIDIA’s GRID cloud gaming service gets 1080p 60 FPS streaming
NVIDIA just flipped on a major upgrade for its GRID cloud gaming service: Full 1080p support at a blistering 60 frames per second. That’s the same resolution and frame rate as many games running on the Xbox One and PS4, and it’s pretty much the gold standard for PC gamers. And most importantly for NVIDIA, the update makes it the first company to offer game streaming at such a high resolution over the internet. To take advantage of the new streaming feature, you’ll need to grab one of the company’s SHIELD gaming devices (either the original handheld console or its gaming tablet), sign up for the SHIELD Hub beta group and have at least a 30 Mbps internet connection. We’d imagine it’ll likely be a compelling draw for the company’s upcoming SHIELD Android set-top box.
So far, NVIDIA is offering around 35 games for free streaming over GRID, including Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Batman: Arkham Origins. Come June, it’ll also debut a premium option (no, we don’t have pricing details yet).
While you can get 1080p/60p game streaming within your local network in a variety of ways — including Nvidia’s own GeForce Experience offering on PCs and Valve’s Steam platform — offering it remotely over the internet will be the holy grail for plenty of game companies. At this point, Valve’s got a major head start — and it’s still making progress. The company also announced today that it’s opening up two new GRID data centers in the southwestern US and Central Europe. It’s currently running six data centers around the world, offering GRID to gamers in 20 countries.

Google delivers news headlines to your Apple Watch
If you were gutsy enough to buy an Apple Watch on launch, you’ve likely been asking a common question: where are the Watch-savvy Google apps? Well, one of them is finally here… although it’s probably not the one you want. The search firm has updated Google News & Weather with support for Apple’s wearable, so you now have a quick way to scan major headlines from your wrist. It’s definitely convenient, although these tidbits take a while to load and don’t include the “weather” part of the iOS app. However, the real question is when the Google apps that you’re likely to use will show up. It’d be great to dictate Hangouts messages or triage an overflowing Gmail inbox.

Firefox can finally stream Netflix videos without a plugin
Due to Hollywood’s insistence on DRM to stream its movies on Netflix, Firefox users who wanted to watch flicks on the service had to download the Silverlight plugin. That’s because until now, Mozilla’s staunch open-source philosophy prevented the browser from being loaded with the DRM tech — dubbed the Adobe Content Decryption Module (CDM) — necessary to stream those shows on regular ol’ HTML 5 (Chrome and Safari, on the other hand, have no such scruples). Not so with the latest version of Firefox, however, which is ready to help watch your favorite Netflix show just by itself, no plugin required. If you’re strictly anti-DRM though, no worries; Mozilla has is pushing a non-CDM version of the browser for your principled pleasure but only downloads the DRM module when you visit a page that needs it. It might seem a little antithetical for Mozilla to offer a browser with DRM support, but we can understand why one might want to bend the rules to watch the wonder that is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Google, Nestlé come together again to stamp YouTube’s name on 600,000 KitKat packages
The relationship between Google and Nestlé remains as strong as its ever been. Google released Android 4.4 in 2013 and applied the KitKat name, a product that Nestlé owns and licenses to Hershey in the United States. Now the two are back together to replace the KitKat name with YouTube’s on more than 600,000 packages in the United Kingdom. It is all part of Nestlé’s ‘Celebreate the Breakers Break’ campaign. Also, searching “YouTube my break” on a mobile device will return results with the top four videos trending from around the world. Google and Nestlé want people to make the most of their unused time.

Regulars seemingly prepared to approve AT&T’s acquisition of DirecTV
The acquisition of DirecTV by AT&T could be closing soon, nearly one year after the wireless carrier announced its intent to do so. Both the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Department of Justice are approaching the end of their review and, according to The Wall Street Journal, there has been nothing to prevent the deal from closing. The biggest issue that regulars are seeking to identify is whether or not a monopoly would be built with the joining forces.
We could be just weeks away from seeing AT&T have ownership of the nation’s largest satellite TV provider.

Sony Xperia Z4 and more reportedly coming to Verizon

Sony officially unveiled its new flagship, the Xperia Z4, just a few weeks ago. We haven’t heard much information about the handset’s availability outside of Japan quite yet, and we’re still awaiting news from the company as to whether or not the handset will be rebranded as the Z3+ for international markets. While we wait for official word from Sony, it’s looking like the Z4 might end up making its way to Verizon, according to retired leaker @evleaks.
Coming to Verizon: iPad mini 4, Xperia Z4, GPad X 8.3, Desire 526
— Evan Blass (@evleaks) May 12, 2015
Sony’s presence in the United States hasn’t been as prominent as many consumers would like, though we saw that change when T-Mobile started carrying the Z3, and Verizon the Z3v. Because of this, it’s not completely surprising that the Z4 may be making its way to Big Red.

Additionally, Mr. Blass also revealed that the unannounced LG G Pad X 8.3 will also make its way to the carrier. This is the first time we’re hearing about the tablet, though this doesn’t really surprise us either. LG’s previous two tablets, the G Pad 7.0 and 8.0, proved themselves as viable options in the tablet market, so it makes sense that we may see a new offering from LG soon.
Also on the list of devices coming to Verizon is the HTC Desire 526, a budget-friendly Android KitKat-powered device that’s already available in India. No details were given regarding a release timeframe for any of these devices, so we’ll let you know if we hear any information.
Jorno Review: Hands-On With a Tri-Fold Portable Keyboard for iOS Devices [iOS Blog]
Continuing on with our series of keyboard reviews, we’re taking a look at the portable, foldable Jorno keyboard. The Jorno made its debut on Kickstarter way back in 2012, and after years of refinements and design changes, the keyboard began shipping out to customers in March of 2015.
The Jorno’s look is quite a bit different than the original concept presented in 2012, but the basic idea is the same — it’s a tri-fold Bluetooth keyboard that collapses down for better portability. The Jorno name heralds the design of the keyboard, which resembles a Moleskine journal when it’s folded up for travel.

What’s in the Box and Setup
The Jorno ships in a compact box that includes the keyboard itself, the cover/stand that holds it up, and a USB cable for charging. Setting up the Jorno takes just a few seconds. When it’s unfolded, it’s powered on (as indicated by a green light) and Bluetooth can be activated by holding down function and tapping the Bluetooth key (the “C”).

From there, it pairs within the Settings menu of an iPhone or iPad like any other Bluetooth accessory.
Design
The Jorno is a two-piece accessory with a QWERTY keyboard and a separate stand rather than a keyboard case, so it’s able to work with a wide range of devices, including the iPhone, the iPad, and other smartphones and tablets. The main component of the Jorno is the keyboard itself, which is collapsible and can be folded down into a 5.7 by 3.5 inch package that’s then covered by the case/stand for travel.

When the Jorno is not in use, the black leather-like stand serves as a case, but when you need to type something, it folds into a triangle shape held together by magnets, much like an iPad Smart Cover. A small plastic lip at the bottom ensures an iPhone or an iPad stays in place, and the magnets that hold it all together are strong enough that nothing is in danger of falling over. Since it’s just a simple stand, the Jorno’s case can hold an iPhone or iPad in landscape or portrait mode for typing, watching videos, and more.

WSJ: Regulators will likely approve AT&T/DirecTV merger
AT&T’s $48.5 billion DirecTV acquisition likely won’t go the way of Comcast’s similarly-sized play for Time Warner Cable, which saw plenty of regulator pushback. The FCC and Justice Department are nearing the end of their review of the deal, and at this point it looks like they won’t be blocking it, sources tell the Wall Street Journal. Regulators might still end up placing conditions on the deal, however. It’s not hard to see why the FCC and DOJ find the AT&T/DirecTV union more palatable than the Comcast deal. While the combined company will be a major media player, it won’t monopolize services in any meaningful way. AT&T has also committed to bringing broadband to more rural areas as part of the deal, which likely made the feds warm up to the offer. The WSJ notes that final regulatory approval for the deal could be “weeks away” — expect things to wrap up quickly once that happens.
