Xiaomi Mi Note Pro smartphone goes official with S810 chipset, 4GB RAM, 2K display and more

Xiaomi_Mi_Note_Pro_Official_01

Xiaomi unveiled the Mi Note and the Mi Note Pro smartphones in January, with the former hitting the markets some weeks ago. The company has now formally brought the Mi Note Pro to the markets as well, starting with China.

This is a specs powerhouse for those unaware and features 4GB of RAM, a Quad HD display and a Snapdragon 810 SoC which may or may not face overheating issues. Xiaomi is using a 5.7 inch panel here, so it can be compared with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which also has the same display size and resolution.

The handset comes with a 13-megapixel camera on the back and is accompanied by a 5-megapixel selfie camera. Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology is built in which assures that the phone’s 3,000 mAh battery is charged in no time. We’ve also seen this technology on the Nexus 6, Droid Turbo and other recently launched devices. The Mi Note Pro will be sold in Black, White and Gold variants.

The Mi Note Pro is also one of the very few smartphones that support LTE Cat.9 networks. The handset will cost ¥3299 ($532) when it is made available in China and we hope to see it reaching the global markets as well. The Mi Note Pro seems to be an absolute steal considering the hardware on board as well as the pricing. But unfortunately for those living outside Asia, the wait for the Mi Note Pro might be too long.

Oculus Rift goes mainstream early 2016

Quarter one 2016. It’s the answer to a question we’ve asked basically every time we’ve spoken with Oculus VR since 2012: “When does the consumer version of the Rift come out?” Aside from that revelation, we’re also getting our first look at the final design of the headset, but that’s it! No word on price or launch games, experiences or Facebook apps, either. Come to think of it, “no” probably fits as an answer to any other question you might have at this point. Oculus teased that they’ll have more to share soon, specifically hinting at June’s Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3), but for now we’ll just have to make do with these morsels. If Sony hoped to have early 2016 to itself in terms of VR for the masses with Project Morpheus, those dreams have effectively been dashed.

‘Grim Fandango Remastered’ comes to Android and iOS

Grim Fandango

The classic point-and-click adventure Grim Fandango has made its way to iOS and Android. Originally released by LucasArts, Grim Fandango was remastered by creator Tim Schafer’s Double Fine Productions for PlayStation 4, Vita, PC, Mac and Linux earlier this year. Unlike many mobile ports of traditional games, Grim Fandango‘s point-and-click gameplay should lend itself to extended plays on iPad and Android tablets quite nicely, although playing on smaller phones may prove problematic. The mobile version of the critically acclaimed game includes the re-release’s improved graphics and audio along with additional features like an optional director’s commentary.

Grim Fandango is priced at $9.99 in both Google Play and Apple’s App Store for one week only, after which it’ll be sold at $14.99. If you don’t have that kind of equipment but are still keen to play it, Double Fine is applying the same 33% discount to the game on both Steam and the PlayStation Store.

Sharp will start making HDTVs with Roku built-in

Until now, the only names that had signed up to be part of Roku’s integrated smart TV club were TCL, Hisense and Insignia. If none of those brands floated your boat, however, then you may be relieved to hear that Sharp has now signed to bake the streaming company’s hardware into a new range of TVs as well. The company is pledging to knock out both a 42 and a 50-inch 1080p set built from Roku’s reference designs. Price-wise, the former is priced at $379.99, while the latter will wind up setting you back $499.99 — with both available exclusively through Best Buy.

At the same time, Roku is also announcing that Insignia, Best Buy’s homegrown TV brand, is on the cusp of releasing a pair of new 1080p units. Both feature LED-backlit displays and 60Hz refresh rates, with the 32-inch model costing $229.99 and a 55-inch model marked up for $549.99. That is, of course, assuming that you’re not interested in picking up a 4K-ready Roku TV, which CEO Anthony Wood has hinted would arrive at some point this year.

Black sheep: The Android 5.0.2 update for the Nexus 9 dropped today, 5.1.1 nowhere in sight

When we learned last month that Google’s Nexus division wasn’t doing terribly great financially mostly due to the Nexus 6, we were intrigued that there was no mention of the Nexus 9 at all. Maybe it’s actually selling quite well, but there would be one gripe of owners who have bought the device thinking they would be on the forefront of Android software – the fact that the Nexus 9 doesn’t actually have the latest version of Android. In fact, the Android 5.0.2 update for the Nexus 9 has only just dropped today, a few days after the factory images for Android 5.1.1 for much older Nexus devices were put up on Google‘s developer site.

Maybe we’ll never know why the Nexus 9 is currently the black sheep in the Nexus family – maybe it’s the new NVIDIA chipset – but it can’t be heartening that even the Nexus 10 has the latest version of Android Lollipop on it. Whatever the actual story is, we hope that the Nexus 9 catches up soon before it becomes *that* Nexus devices that everybody has forgotten about.

What do you think about Google’s lack of updates for the Nexus 9? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Google removes Threes! from the Play Store over policy violation

threesplaystore

Google has just removed popular game Threes! from the Play Store, over alleged policy violations of Android’s premier app market. The developer said on Twitter that the game was removed over the use of the search keyword “2048” for the game.

The developer did this so that users who search for 2048 on the Play Store also come across Threes and it clearly hasn’t gone down well with Google. This practice is known in the industry as keyword stuffing and is taken very seriously by Google.

So there’s no telling as to when Threes will make a comeback in the Play Store, but it is likely that Google will allow the app on the Play Store if they make the necessary changes to the game. It is important to note that users who already have the app will be unharmed by this. 2048 is yet another puzzle game popular in the Play Store, so it’s no surprise that the developer of Threes tried to piggyback off its demand.

[Download] Android 5.0.2 factory image for WiFi and LTE Nexus 9

Nexus_9_LTE

With Google beginning the update rollout of Android 5.0.2 for the Nexus 9 tablet recently, many users were keen on getting hold of the factory images to flash the ROM manually. This saves the trouble of waiting for an OTA update to pop up.

Google has now issued factory images for both the WiFi and LTE models of the HTC made tablet on its servers. If you’re new to the process, make sure you check out our guide on flashing Lollipop factory images to ensure that you get it right. The factory image is 805MB (835MB for the LTE variant) in size and comes with the build LRX22L.

Glide for Android overhauled with Material Design and new features

glide_logo_blue

The Glide for Android app has a refreshed look and some new features, but this is still the same Glide that more than fifteen million people have come to know and love. The app has been visually overhauled to match Google’s Material Design vision with Lollipop. The Glide team implemented plenty of color and animations throughout the app On the features side, Glide now supports offline video recording. Rather than requiring an internet connection to get anything done, Glide allows users to record at any time and send when a connection returns.

Other new features include full screen previews in threads and large-sized emojis.

Adam Korbl, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of Glide, commented on Glide for Android’s update:

“The new, fresh design of Glide for Android, when combined with tablet support and the other features we’ve added, makes the app even more delightful to use.”

I have been using the latest version of Glide for the past two days and find it to be beautiful. We are seeing more apps transition to Material Design over time and, clearly, that’s great as it makes the entire Android experience feel whole. Also, regarding functionality, I love the offline video recording. The same kind of feature now exists with Facebook. It makes everything seamless by allowing content to be queued with the absence of an internet connection.
