You can Remote Play PS4 games on your Xperia Z2 devices now, too
We’re going to say that Sony’s relationship with the PS Vita is a little bit, well, complicated. Why? Because one of the biggest reasons to even own one these days, Remote Play, is now available in more places. Specifically, the Xperia Z2 smartphone and its similarly-named tablet cousin. That’s right, you no longer need to own the catch-up king’s portable gaming system or Z3 device to play PlayStation 4 games while you’re away from your console and TV. Given that it uses the console’s DualShock 4 controller rather than the slightly cramped confines of the Vita, depending on the size of your hands it could be a better experience, too. Sony says that the Xperia line is the only place you’ll get full Remote Play functionality, but folks on the XDA Developers forums are already working to get around that bit of exclusivity so it’s available on all capable Android gizmos. Are you a new Vita (or Z3) owner feeling a bit slighted now? Let us know in the comments.

The Big Picture: building a 3D-printed moon base
Did the European Space Agency’s concept of a 3D-printed moon base seem too outlandish? Don’t worry — the institution has just posted a video (below) that sheds more light on the subject. The colonization mission would revolve around a robotic rover that converts moon dust into a 3D-printed protective layer for an inflatable habitat; after three months, the living space would be safe enough for human settlers. It’d even have windows to provide some natural lighting. This is just a research exercise at present — it’ll likely be years before the ESA can put a base like this on lunar soil. Still, it’s clear that the agency’s vision of extraterrestrial colonization is more than just a passing fancy.

Walmart to launch Chromecast competitor for VUDU video service
According to leaked FCC documents Walmart is readying its own Chromecast competitor for its own streaming/digital copy retrieval service, VUDU. The VUDU Spark as it looks to be called, resembles the media sticks of its competitors namely the Roku Streaming Stick and Fire TV Stick. The stick will come with an RF remote control (Zigbee based) and will pump the Vudu streaming service straight into your TV. We’re not sure if it’ll do anything other than that, like screen-mirroring, and we’re not sure on how much this will retail for.

Verizon will carry the kid-friendly LG Kizon smartwatch
When LG announced the child-tracking Kizon smartwatch, we weren’t really sure what carriers would pick the wearable up. Thanks to an FCC filing earlier today, though, we’ve got a pretty strong hint that Verizon will be offering the smartwatch later this year.
The filing lists the device with the model number LG-VC100, and some information from the Kizon PC Reset Tool confirms that it should be a Verizon variant of the watch. Verizon hasn’t made anything official, but I think we can expect an announcement sooner rather than later.

Test build of Android 5.0 leaks for the Galaxy S 4
Earlier this week Samsung confirmed that the getting-long-in-the-tooth Galaxy S 4 would, in fact, receive Android 5.0 Lollipop. Of course we’re curious about how that will look on the device and today we get to see a sneak peek. Like the Galaxy S 5, SamMobile was able to score an internal build of Lollipop for an S 4 and as such, made a video for it.
According to the gang at SamMobile, the build is far from complete and the build is nowhere close to being ready for daily driver status. As such, you won’t see a leak of this build. However you’ll see a sneak peek of the OS in action.
Click here to view the embedded video.
What we see from the video is Touchwiz optimized for Lollipop. Samsung has brought a few features from the S5 and Note 4 to the S4 too. You’ll see the My Magazine launcher and the popping colors lockscreen. System apps have also received a material makeover. The build that this S4 is running is an older build (LRX02E) and not the final Lollipop code base (LRX21M). Given that it’s an early build, there’s probably a whole hell of a lot to be added between now and the release of the update for Samsung devices.

LG trademarks multiple names for possible future smart phones

A week ago Tuesday (Oct. 28) LG applied for several trademarks for possible names of upcoming phones. Some of the names trademarked look to be a part of LG’s upcoming G series including the G Chocolate, G Black, G Plus, and G Tao. Other names include Leon, Comet and Magna. All were trademarked with the US Patent Office under the mobile phones category. Other than that, nothing much to see. We’ll update you when we find out more.

Apple Follows Through With Plans to Stop Selling Fitbit Devices
Last month, news surfaced of Apple’s plans to cease selling Fitbit’s line of activity tracking devices in its stores, and as of today, it appears the company has followed through with that decision. All Fitbit products have now been removed from the online Apple Store and Apple has begun removing the devices from its retail stores as well.
Apple previously sold both the Fitbit Flex, Fitbit’s activity tracking band, and the Fitbit One, a standalone tracker that could be clipped to clothing, for $99.95. It is not known why Apple opted to remove Fitbit’s products from its online stores, but the decision follows Fitbit’s announcement that it had no plans to integrate with Apple HealthKit, as it is “working on other exciting projects” for Fitbit users.
Fitbit’s activity trackers are similar in function to Apple’s upcoming Apple Watch, offering users the ability to track steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, stairs climbed, and more. Last week, Fitbit announced a new Surge “Fitness Super Watch” that also includes GPS functionality and a heart rate monitor, bringing its tracking capabilities even more in line with the Apple Watch.
Though Fitbit devices have been removed from Apple Stores, Apple is continuing to sell other fitness tracking products, including the UP from Jawbone and the Nike Fuelband. Jawbone recently introduced the UP3, its most recent fitness tracking device that includes skin and ambient temperature sensors along with a heart rate monitor. It is unclear whether Apple will continue to sell these devices as the launch of the Apple Watch approaches or if the ban is limited to Fitbit.
Fitbit’s activity trackers are not the first products that Apple has removed from its stores in recent weeks. Earlier in October, Apple removed Bose audio products from its stores, no longer offering the headphones online or in retail locations.
Monument Valley Expansion ‘Forgotten Shores’ Coming to iOS November 13 [iOS Blog]
Developer Ustwo’s popular mobile puzzle game, Monument Valley, will be receiving a significant update next week that finally adds additional content to the game, reports TechCrunch. The developer confirmed new levels were in the works back in April, a few weeks after the game initially launched.
The original game was released earlier this year and became a big player in the iOS and Android mobile gaming space, despite its brief length. The Forgotten Shores expansion, which will be available as an in-app purchase, is rumored to double the content of the game.
The November 13th update will focus on quality over quantity, according to Ustwo. Not much else is known about Forgotten Shores at this point, including a potential price point, but Ustwo did hint that the expansion would introduce new architectural styles into the game, and even begin to incorporate “landscapes.”
The original Monument Valley game can be downloaded from the App Store for $3.99. [Direct Link]
Lenovo Borrows Heavily From Apple in New S90 Smartphone Marketing Push [iOS Blog]
Leading PC and competitive mobile phone maker Lenovo may have been overly influenced by Apple’s iPhone 6 when it was looking for inspiration for its new S90 smartphone. As reported by Gizmodic (via The Independent), Lenovo’s S90 ‘Sisley’ smartphone closely resembles the iPhone 6 with a marketing push that is almost identical to Apple’s own promotional materials.
Though there are small differences between the two devices, the overall styling of the S90 is remarkably similar to the iPhone 6. Both phones include a rounded metal casing and measure up with the same 6.9mm thickness and 129g weight.
The mimicry didn’t stop with the hardware design, as Lenovo also borrows heavily from Apple’s unique marketing style. The Chinese manufacturer uses an almost identical product layout and brightly-colored, people-focused images that Apple typically uses in its advertising materials.
Lenovo addressed accusations that it had copied the iPhone 6’s design, stating that though there are clear “external similarities” between the two devices, there would have been no time for the company to emulate the iPhone’s design so soon after its launch.
Lenovo has responded by admitting that while there are “external similarities […] Considering the product design lifecycle of any smartphone – at least a year in planning and prototyping – it’s not possible to copy a design so quickly.”
This isn’t the first time competitors have copied Apple’s iPhone. The Cupertino company waged a multi-year battle against rival Samsung over patent and trade dress infringement claims. Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has also been accused of copying the iPhone and the iPad in its line of inexpensive smartphones and tablets, with Apple’s design chief Jony Ive going so far as to call the similarities in design “theft.”
