Chocolate? Pfft, MIT students are 3D printing with ice cream

US-POLITICS-OBAMA-ICE CREME

Sorry, that’s not a 3D-printed ice cream cone, Mr. President.

Sure, those 3D printers that can output confectionery creations in sugar, chocolate and other edible substances are great, but a trio of MIT students have upped the awesome. Using a household Cuisinart ice cream maker and a Solidoodle printer, the crew hacked together a device that prints soft serve for an additive manufacturing course. The modified 3D printer is housed inside of a small freezer and a line of liquid nitrogen blasts the dairy dessert as it’s placed, keeping the object solid during the 15-minute process. That time limit was imposed by group, so that when Dairy Queen and the like want to offer custom creations, the wait time won’t seem like an eternity. For now though, there’s a brief glimpse of the action after the break.

Angry Birds Rio updates with 26 new levels in ‘Timber Tumble’

Angry Birds Rio

You have to hand it to Rovio, they do a pretty good job of keeping things rolling with their Angry Birds franchise, especially with their games. They set themselves up to be able to add new levels to various version of the games without always having to release a whole new game. Angry Birds Rio is one of those many titles that can forever expand. Originally the game launched when the accompanying movie Rio was released. The title has received multiple updates with new levels added as time went on boasting 320 levels, 72 bonus levels and 12 episodes total and offers similar game mechanics as other version with a few birds from the movie for good measure.

Angry Birds Rio

Rovio has released an update to the game that went live just yesterday which brings in 20 more bird brained levels and 6 bonus levels in an episode dubbed Timber Tumble. Unlike other Angry Bird variants, you are up against a group of mischievous monkeys, the funny ones from the movie. If you happen to be an Angry Birds addict, a casual player or maybe just have kids who enjoy it, you might as well pick up the update. The game is free after all.

Dead Trigger 2 gets massive content update with weapons, new arena, environments and More

Dead Trigger 2 Arena Tournemant UpdateIf you are a zombie killing machine, then chances are you have and play Dead Trigger 2 fairly often. Madfinger Games has just released a pretty massive update to the game that you should probably pick up.

“We have strengthened the spirit of competition with exceptional tournaments and awesome prizes” explains Pavel Čížek, vice president of MADFINGER Games. “Now we bring the best and most extensive update of Dead Trigger 2. Our fans will enjoy a variety of tournaments with custom gladiator rules and powerful new guns” adds Čížek.

The weekly tournaments are the only thing that have been added though. They updated the story campaign, improved the world maps, added new environments, added a purgatory arena along with new weapons and other content. The purgatory arena looks like it should be quite a fun battle with hordes of zombies and wickedly awesome traps like the impaling spike you see above. Check out the brief game trailer about the update.

Dead Trigger 2 is a freemium game that does offer in-app purchases. That doesn’t mean you can’t spend countless hours playing without spending a dime. I know my daughter took over my account a while back on the tablet has been plugging away just fine without spending any money. If you have the game, then head to the Play Store and snag the update. If this is all new to you, hit the link below and get to zombie slaughtering on a global scale.

NFL fans rejoice as NFL Sunday Ticket is available for all

NFL Sunday Ticket

As of today, DirecTV has announced that those who wish to subscribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket package, but do not want or have DirecTV services, will be able to purchase the service outside of the TV package. This is huge news for people who want to be able to view out-of-market games, but don’t want to subscribe to DirecTV services, or don’t have the ability to do so. DirecTV published a press release stating the details of the plans, due to the fact that there are still subscription costs associated with the Sunday Ticket service.

NFLSUNDAYTICKET TV

There are three different tiers for the outside subscription, Digital, Console, and Max. The Digital subscription for $199.99, allows you to stream the out-of-market games on your mobile devices, such as tablets, and smartphones. The Console subscription for $239.99, is pretty self explanatory, as it allows you to stream those same games on any of your capable gaming consoles, including the PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Max subscription, for $329.99, allows you to stream your games on any of the mentioned devices, as well as giving you some other perks.

The perks of purchasing the Max subscription, is the ability not only stream the games from any of your devices or consoles, but you also get the Red Zone Channel, and the DirecTV Fantasy Zone. The DirecTV Fantasy Zone gives you live looks at fantasy plays, so that you can keep track of how your fantasy team is doing, while watching your favorite teams play. All three packages, give you the ability to not only stream the games in various ways, but also, you will be able to track your favorite players, as well as, get real-time stats and scores from other games.

This is huge for football fans every where, and while the application is not ready to support the new plans yet, the streaming ability of the app takes effect on September 7th. It’s still not known whether the app will support Chromecast streaming, but there is still some time left between now and the beginning of the NFL weekend, so things can definitely be tweaked between now and then.

If you’re a student, and you want to watch your home-town team, you are eligible for a student discount on the Digital tier. While it’s not certain why the student discount isn’t applicable across the board, it’s still nice to see that DirecTV is looking out for students who want to stream their favorite teams on their laptops or mobile devices.

Accessory of the Day: SoundBot Water Resistant Bluetooth Shower Speaker

soundbot

Be honest, you sing in the shower. Don’t be embarrassed, pretty much everyone does. We also like to sing in the rain and break out in tune all over the place, but sometimes the environment is not conducive to speakers. Sadly, nobody wants to hear just our voice.

The SoundBot SB510 HD Water Resistant Bluetooth 3.0 Shower Speaker makes it much easier for us to sing in the bathroom. Paired to pretty much any smartphone or device you’ve got, it provides up to six hours of playback. Thanks to the hard buttons we can skip tracks, pause, and other functions without having to grab our phones. And, the best part is a built-in microphone that lets us take calls in the shower.  Of course, this device also works well at the beach or near the backyard swimming pool.

Available in a variety of colors, we can see why this is one of Amazon’s top selling accessories.

‘Google Wallet’ to Gain Gift Card Support, Money Request Feature, and More [iOS Blog]

Google is planning to update its Google Wallet app in the near future, adding several new features including gift card support and a new request money option.

New gift card management options join loyalty cards within the Google Wallet app, allowing users to store gift card information directly in the app. Gift cards can be redeemed in stores with the app, making it unnecessary to hold onto physical cards.

googlewalletgiftcard
Gift cards can be added manually or using the device’s camera and for cards from participating retailers like AMC, Best Buy, Nike, and more, users are able to check gift card balance in real time and get location-based reminders to use cards when in a store.

It’s now possible to use the Google Wallet app to request money from friends and family, sending a notification with an attached message.

For all those times when your friends forget to pay you back for dinner, you can simply request money using the Google Wallet app (for U.S. users, 18 years and older). They will receive a notification and can instantly pay you back. If they need a reminder, you can send them a friendly nudge from within the app. You can also send your friends a message right within Gmail, and request money just like you would attach a picture.

Finally, Google has introduced a Spanish language option and made it free to send money in the app when using a debit card. Previously, sending money required a 2.9 percent transaction fee from both a credit card and a debit card.

Google Wallet can be downloaded from the App Store for free, and the update should be live later this week. [Direct Link]

Experimental stem cell treatment causes woman to grow parts of a nose on her spine

Stem cells are seen as one of modern medicine’s most promising magic bullets, but that doesn’t mean that we understand them. A paralyzed woman from the US has learned this the hard way, after an experimental treatment caused her to grow a nose-like tumor on her back. The unnamed person took part in a trial whereby stem cells from her nose were applied to her spine in the hope that it could repair the nerve damage that led to her paralysis. Unfortunately, the treatment was unsuccessful and, eight years later, the subject found worsening pain in that same area. When surgeons operated, they found a tumor comprised of nasal tissue that was producing a thick substance that was remarkably close to mucus.

Anyone who could be put off a life-saving treatment should probably relax, at least for now. The procedure used by the Hospital de Egas Moniz in Lisbon was unorthodox and bypassed a process that would have grown specific cells in a lab before implantation. Instead, the clinic simply inserted parts of the nasal lining straight into the spine, which is most likely why the tumor was able to form. Despite this, a 2010 report on this same trial found that there may be benefits to the procedure, with some subjects actually seeing positive results. Either way, now that the problem has come to light, the University of Iowa’s Brian J. Dlouhy, who removed the tumor, has suggested that all stem cell trial patients should be given much more attention after their surgery to ensure this is a one-off event.

Senate passes a bill that legalizes cellphone unlocking

Phone unlocking on the street

The US is now that much closer to a law that makes it legal to unlock your phone. A few months after the House of Representatives passed a bill that would authorize unlocking, the Senate has passed its own measure accomplishing mostly the same thing. The biggest difference is their attitude toward bulk unlocking; unlike the House, the Senate has no major objections to resellers unlocking devices en masse. Both legislative branches still have to harmonize their bills before the President can sign something into law, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the volume unlocking issue holds things up. However, it’s good to know that the government is largely on the same page — and that you might not have to rely on the kindness of carriers to get more control over the phone you bought.

Paul McCartney banks on apps, not albums

Paul McCartney In Concert - Chicago, Illinois

Paul McCartney went through a rift with streaming services, but the former Beatle has been always been keen to keep his albums available on iTunes. Now, Sir Paul is following a growing trend for releases and reissues: apps. Five of McCartney’s classic albums (Band on the Run, McCartney, McCartney II, RAM and Wings over America) are now available as iPad apps, complete with bonus material. On top of the extra videos, photos, interviews and remastered tracks, the standalone downloads are priced at $7.99 — $5 less than the regular deluxe versions. Of course, you’ll have to contend with streaming the tracks through each app rather than hopping around the complete set in your mobile library. The move is nothing new though, as Lady Gaga, Björk and others have taken a similar route with companion software and added content. It’s no secret that artists are having a hard time paying the bills from record sales, so packaging music as paid apps seems a tactic to fill the void.
