Samsung Launches New ‘Screen Envy’ Anti-iPhone Ad

Over the past several weeks, Samsung has released three different ads pitting its Galaxy S5 and its Galaxy Tab S against Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Now the company is back today with a new anti-iPhone ad that highlights the Galaxy S5 as having the “screen your friends wish they had.”

The spot depicts an iPhone user sitting next to a Samsung user, with the two discussing the rumored larger screen of the upcoming iPhone 6. “iPhone might be getting a bigger screen,” the iPhone owner tells his S5-toting friend. “That hasn’t happened yet?” the friend replies as the two go on to compare their phones.

You know that thing you’ve been waiting on for like two years and how it’s supposed to be awesome and how it’s going to blow your mind? Well, it’s been here this whole time. But maybe you just like waiting.

Immediate gratification is an advertising tactic Samsung has used before, with its new ad harkening back to its well-known 2011 commercial series that depicted iPhone owners waiting in long lines for new iPhones while enviously eyeing Samsung devices. The ad also includes Samsung’s tagline “The Next Big Thing is Here,” which reportedly infuriated Apple in the past.

The company’s Galaxy S5, introduced in back in February, includes a 5.1-inch display, but Samsung devices have had larger-sized screens for several years running. Apple is planning to address growing consumer demand for bigger displays with the iPhone 6, introducing two new models with 4.7 and 5.5-inch screens. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is set to launch in September, while the larger 5.5-inch version may come somewhat later in 2014 or early 2015.

Accessory of the Day: SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS Memory Card [74% OFF]

sandisk_32gb

Need to add some storage space to your Android smartphone or tablet? Of course you do. While most of today’s devices come with 8GB-32GB of internal storage many of them offer room for growth. In other words, plenty of our favorite products offer microSD expansion.

Instead of relying on the cloud to hold everything, take matters into your own hands with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB MicroSDHC Class 10 UHS Memory Card. Normally priced around $69.99, we’ve found it on Amazon for $18.19, a savings of around 74 percent. So, rather than deleting files to free up storage, double it up (or more) with one of these cards. Need more than 32GB? Why not grab the 64GB card? It’s only $36.95 today!

Privacy Mode under testing by Netflix, may or may not become a Feature

Netflix

One might think the a “privacy mode” would be a dirty thing. Maybe Netflix is gearing up for a new adult content section that is password protected and blocked from others seeing what you have been watching. That is not the case. However, Netflix is working on a “privacy mode” that will let you sneak in and secretly watch keeping up with the Kardashians and leave no trace that you spent your Sunday watching Kim instead of Football.

“At Netflix we continuously test new things. In this case, we are testing a feature in which a user watching a movie or TV show can choose to view in “Privacy Mode.” Choosing that option means the program will not appear in your viewing activity log, nor will it be used to determine recommendations about what you should watch in the future.”

The bigger factor that I think is a bit more exciting is that privacy mode viewing won’t turn around and influence your recommendations from Netflix on your account. IT will also block the sharing of said titles to your Facebook friends too.

They say the feature is being tested right now across all of Netflix’s markets and could go on for a few months. Sadly, not every user out there will have access to the feature. I know I didn’t find it anywhere on any device or TV box in my house. Edwards also made sure to mention that the Privacy mode function may or may not ever make it to a general roll-out for everyone. It all depends on how well it performs in the testing phase. I would suggest that you all cruise through your Netflix accounts and see if you have access to it or not. If you do, be sure to use it and make it worth wild. I wouldn’t mind seeing this feature for general consumption, assuming it works.

Facebook officially owns Oculus now

It’s official: Facebook now actually owns Oculus VR, the company behind virtual reality goggles Oculus Rift. Though the $2 billion acquisition was announced way back in March, these kinds of negotiations typically take months to resolve thanks to various regulations. Now they have. Facebook and Oculus released a joint statement today that simply states: “We’re looking forward to an exciting future together, building the next computing platform and reimagining the way people communicate.” As for just why the deal took place, Palmer Luckey, Oculus’ founder, has said that the plan is to “promote the long-term adoption of virtual reality, not short-term financial returns” and that the partnership would become the “clear and obvious path to delivering virtual reality to everyone.”

Tesla preps for Model X production with assembly line revamp

North American International Auto Show Held In Detroit

In order to boost output of the Model S and to prepare for production of the Model X SUV, Tesla has paused work at its only plant for two weeks. Bloomberg reports that $100 million in upgrades are on tap for the factory that will allow both vehicles to be constructed on the same assembly line. The changes will also increase production of the Model S sedan by 25 percent. As you may recall, the company’s electric SUV has been delayed more than once, so by now there’s a few folks anticipating the expected 2015 arrival.

Netflix for Apple TV Gains ‘Up Next’ Feature for Automatic Episode Playback [Mac Blog]

Netflix for the Apple TV was updated today to add a new “Up Next” feature, which lets users automatically select the next episode of a television show for playback. While easy playback of the next episode in a series has been long available on the web and in the Netflix app for iOS devices, it’s been noticeably missing from the Apple TV.

Prior to today’s update, Apple TV users were forced to return to the main series menu to initiate the playback of the next episode of a television show, a task that required several extra button clicks. As of today, playing the next episode of a series requires only a single click on the remote as the “Play Next Episode” option pops up as soon as an episode ends.

“Play Next Episode” on the Apple TV is slightly different from the playback feature on iOS devices and on the web, which begin playing the next episode in a series automatically after a short countdown timer. The Apple TV still requires user interaction to play a new episode.

Netflix’s new Apple TV feature comes as the company announces its Q2 financial results, with a total 50.05 million subscribers, up from 37.56 million in Q2 2013. Netflix saw $1.34 billion in total revenue during the quarter, with net income of $71 million.

‘Simpsons World’ puts the full series online, but you’ll need cable to watch everything

First, the good news: At its Television Critics Awards, Fox just announced the details of its plan to put every episode of The Simpsons online for streaming (also, Louie and Fargo have been renewed). Simpsons World will launch in October and let fans browse episodes, create their own playlists, search for/share clips and more. Before that, the FXX cable channel will run “the longest TV marathon in history” by airing the full 25-season / 552 episode run (just for reference, the first HD episode is S20E10, from 2009) in one shot, 24 hours a day, plus The Simpsons Movie, from August 21st until September 1st. The bad news? To access more than just clips, you’ll need a subscription with a participating cable provider. Simpsons World will live both on the web, and through the FXNow app on iOS, Android, Xbox and other smart TV platforms. From those in attendance, like Max Follmer of Brief, the app sounds very well put together, and will let fans do things like follow along with the script as it was originally written and immediately share quotes.
