OneNote on iOS and Mac now lets you attach files
Like it or not, school is fast approaching. However, Microsoft thinks it can make the fall semester a little more bearable with big updates to OneNote on both iOS and the Mac. Both apps now let you attach files to your notes; you can include audio recordings from a lecture to add some context to what you wrote, for example. If you add a PDF printout, you can also jot down annotations.
There’s more than just attachment support in this upgrade, as you might expect, and some of the improvements are meant as much for the corporate crowd as students. You can now open and edit OneDrive for Business notebooks, and it’s possible to both lock and unlock password-protected sections if you don’t want everyone peeping your content. Other updates let you shuffle the order of pages in a notebook, and (on the Mac) share them as email. The refinements probably won’t improve your grades if you’re headed to class in the next several weeks, but they may help you make sense of hastily-written notes when you’re studying for a big exam.

Rumored iWatch Supplier TPK’s Q3 Forecast Falls Flat Amid Reports of Production Issues
Details discussed during a recent earnings conference call by Apple supplier TPK Holdings suggest the production of the iWatch is behind schedule, reports UDN via GforGames. According to earlier rumors, the iWatch may debut in late 2014 with the latest report claiming it will launch alongside the 5.5-inch iPhone 6.
Based on reports from Asian sources, TPK executives spent a portion of the company’s Q3 2014 earning conference call explaining why it sees poorer than expected financial projections for the current quarter. TPK is allegedly supplying Apple with flexible displays that use silver nanowire touch screen technology for inclusion in the iWatch wearable.

Though the iWatch was not mentioned in the call, pundits believe TPK’s shortfall is the result of a slip in the production schedule for the iWatch, which had been expected to be in production and contributing to TPK’s bottom line during the third quarter. Now, the company is projecting an increase in profits during Q4 2014, suggesting the iWatch rollout may be slated for closer to the end of this year.
Shares of TPK stock dropped significantly late last week on the outlook.
At an investor conference Thursday, TPK forecast flat quarterly growth, or at best a 5 percent sequential increase, of its consolidated sales for the third quarter, citing decisions by its customers to postpone the launch of their new products. […]
Sales growth, however, could pick up in September, TPK said, forecasting a break-even operating margin in the third quarter on higher operating costs.
This late start in production may result in Apple shipping fewer iWatch units than expected in 2014, claims analysts at CSLA, a leading Asian investment banking and asset management firm. Instead of shipping 20 million iWatch units by the end of the year, Apple may only be able to deliver a significantly smaller 6 million units. It is unknown if this lowered estimate will translate into a shortage of the device at launch.

UK copyright police hit piracy sites where it hurts: their wallets
One of the downsides of watching Game of Thrones or The Soup via a nefarious website is that you’re bombarded with pop-ups for everything from porn to sandwiches. Now, however, you’re just as likely to see ads from the City of London Police’s Intellectual Property Crime Unit, telling you to have a long hard think about what you’re doing. Unlike other paid-for advertising, these ads won’t send cash to the torrent site owners, eroding the revenue that helps the services continue their operations.
Once a site has been tagged by copyright holders, the team at the IPCU give them two choices: become a legitimate enterprise or face the full force of the law. The cops are working with Project Sunblock, a business that helps big brands keep their adverts away from the less legitimate corners of the internet. If the site owners don’t change their ways, of course, then as well as going on the Infringing Websites List, the police can request the domain registrar to suspend its registration. So, unless Eat24 is planning to broaden its sponsorship policy, it looks like it won’t be long before you’ll just have to wait to catch your favorite TV show.

China investigates Microsoft over monopoly worries
Microsoft just can’t catch a break from China these days. The country’s State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) has raided Microsoft offices in four cities over concerns that the company may be violating anti-monopoly laws. While the government isn’t going into great detail about the raids, it’s linking the investigation back to companies’ complaints about “compatibility issues” with Windows and Office — shades of Microsoft’s EU antitrust woes, anyone?
SAIC is quick to note that it isn’t necessarily convinced that Microsoft has run afoul of the law; it conducted raids because its initial checks didn’t put Microsoft “above suspicion.” For its part, Microsoft tells the South China Morning Post that it plans to “actively cooperate” with officials. So long as an investigation is underway, however, the crew in Redmond is bound to be nervous. Previous antitrust cases against Microsoft have proven costly, and China isn’t likely to be any more forgiving if it believes something is amiss.

‘The Last of Us’ brought to life in live stage show
Today, The Last of Us is getting ready to take over PlayStation 4 consoles everywhere, and soon it may also be conquering… Broadway. Well, maybe not so much. But Naughty Dog’s popular title did make its debut on the live stage, with a show called “The Last of Us: One Night Live” which took place in Santa Monica, California. Sony explains that the play was in celebration of the game’s arrival on the PlayStation 4, so giving fans a way to experience the story through a theatre performance was an obvious choice ahead of the launch. “The Last of Us: One Night Live,” directed by Neil Druckmann, featured music from the score, read of “key scenes” and a Q&A from the cast and crew involved in the show. Sure, it probably would have been better to actually be there, but Sony was kind enough to let you re-live the performance in the video after the break.

Apple TV Updated with CNBC and FOX NOW Channels
Apple today added two more channels to the Apple TV, delivering financial news channel CNBC and network FOX NOW to the platform.
CNBC offers access to a live stream of the financial channel, as well as on-demand clips from news segments and full episodes of the channels “Prime” content original series. Viewing requires authentication with one of a number of cable and Internet providers.
FOX NOW includes on-demand access to a number of shows from the network, including 24: Live Another Day, Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, Glee, and more. Authentication through a cable provider is required for full access to content.

New SSD-Equipped Drobo Mini Boosts Speed of Drobo’s Portable Storage Lineup [Mac Blog]
Connected Data today launched an updated version of its Drobo Mini that includes Solid State Disk (SSD) drives (Via ZDNet). The new model offers an 80 percent performance improvement over a similar Drobo Mini equipped only with hard disk drives.
The new Drobo Mini with SSDs is a portable storage solution designed for photographers, videographers and other on-the-go media professionals who require fast drive performance they can fit in their bag.
“The core benefits that any user receives when using a Drobo are still tremendous value. Being able to start with the capacity you need today and growing over time; simplicity to deploy, use and manage is key – no need to be a storage expert,” writes Joe Disher, senior director of product marketing for Connected Data. “Adding the SSDs to our portable Drobo provides tremendous performance as well as the reliability and redundancy needed for filmmakers that don’t have time to have lost data.”
Internally, the Mini includes four 2.5-inch drive bays with an optional mSATA Accelerator bay. You can buy the Mini pre-equipped with SSDs or supply your own drives for a custom configuration. The Mini features both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports that support read speeds of 300MB/sec and write speeds of 225MB/sec.
The Drobo Mini with SSD is available today in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. Prices start at $1,199 for the 1TB model and climb to $1,799 for the 2TB and $2,999 for the 4TB option.
