Side scrolling monster slayer, Devious Dungeon, goes live July 31st [New Game]

NoodleCake Studios has put out some pretty amazing games over the years. Some of my favorite have been Super Stickman Golf 1 & 2, Punch Quest and the Mikey Shorts series. They are at it again, along with Ravenous Games, with another title that is scheduled to be released tomorrow, July 31st, titled Devious Dungeon.

Devious Dungeon (2)

Devious Dungeon is a medieval action platformer tat features randomized dungeons for you to explore. As you explore the devious dungeons you will have to fight off tons of monsters to earn experience and level up all while collecting loot on the way. You will slay your way through 5 different world with some killer bosses at the end of each before you can move forward. During your travels you will be able to visit the traveling merchant and purchase various weapon upgrades, armor, potions, rings, amulets and coins.

The game controls are simple and straight forward, like all of their games. You have simple, and responsive, left and right buttons along with your typical A and B buttons. That is all you need to navigate and slash the monsters. Take a quick watch of the games trailer to get a better look at how it all plays out.

Looks like it should prove to be a fun way to kill an afternoon or weekend. Devious Dungeon will be live on the Play Store July 31st and will pull in a price tag of $1.99. It will also offer in-app purchases, but it is promised that the balance between the games IAP and your ability to play and complete the game is spot on. In English, it just means that if you have ZERO patience and like to have everything upfront you can pay for it, but if you can work through the levels and spend wisely you can beat it without spending anything other than the games initial price tag.

We do have the link down below that will take you to the Play Store so you can pick this one up, but it won’t do you any good until tomorrow.

Samsung is thinking of making round smartwatches, too

One of Samsung's round smartwatch patents

Motorola might not be the only company making a smartwatch with a circular display in the near future. Samsung has filed for a trio of US design patents for smartwatches that are much more rounded than squarish devices like the Gear Live. The watch faces vary in their curviness, although they all have a similar camera in the band like the early Galaxy Gear; one example (what you see above) also has charging pins in the clasp, rather than on the watch itself. It’s clear that Samsung is seriously considering circular wristwear, although whether or not it actually builds any of these gadgets is another matter. All the patents were filed last March, or well before the company saw poor Galaxy Gear sales and revamped its designs — if these concepts ever translate to real products, there could be a lot of changes.

Square’s new chip card reader will make your payments more secure

Square's reader for chip-based cards

There’s a good reason you don’t usually see Square readers outside of the US: they’re built to read payment cards with magnetic stripes, not the more secure chip-and-PIN cards that are common everywhere else. All that’s set to change, however. Square has revealed plans for a reader that accepts the chip-based EMV format alongside stripes, letting shops handle credit and debit cards from around the world (and the US, once it catches up). The company will only start taking pre-orders for the payment device later this year, but it could be worthwhile for stores and customers alike. Besides the greater availability, it’s much harder to clone a chip card — you shouldn’t have to worry about an unscrupulous clerk (or a clever hacker) stealing your credit card and going on a shopping spree.

Virgin Mobile lets you customize your family’s prepaid phone plan

LG Unify on Virgin Mobile Custom

In the US, prepaid cellphone service tends to be a like-it-or-leave-it proposition that rarely fits perfectly, especially for families. Virgin Mobile may have a smarter approach in store; it’s launching Custom, a prepaid family plan that lets you tailor usage to your liking. You can put as many as five people on plans that start at $7 each ($35 for unlimited talk and text) and scale up depending on individual needs. If Mom is a big fan of streaming music but rarely makes calls, she can pile on the data (or use a $5 Unlimited Music plan) and reduce her voice minutes; a chat-happy kid, meanwhile, can have gobs of messages but only minimal internet access. You can change the plans at any time from mobile apps, and built-in parental controls let you declare certain apps as off-limits during specified hours.

Custom will be available in Walmart stores on August 9th, although your device selection will be limited to some bottom-rung Android devices at first, including the ZTE Emblem ($80), LG Pulse ($100) and LG Unify ($130, shown here). You won’t have to put everyone on the plan to control it, however. As of September 1st, you’ll get a management app for Android and iOS that lets you change Custom plans whether or not you’re a Virgin customer yourself. As such, it could be handy for parents who want to stick to high-end devices and plans, yet keep their kids’ cellphone service on a tight budget.

Modbook will let you convert your Retina MacBook Pro to a tablet for $1,999

Modbook, the company behind those aftermarket Apple tablets, just launched a Kickstarter campaign for its latest product, the Modbook Pro X. After paying a pre-order price of $1,999 today, backers will be able to convert their own Retina MacBook Pros into a tablet beginning early next year. The conversion incorporates the laptop’s original hardware, with components shifted from the lower half of the computer to just behind the 15.4-inch 2,880 x 1,800-pixel LCD.

The Modbook Pro X supports pen input with 2,048 pressure levels, along with tilt and rotate functionality. You can also interact with the device using the rear-mounted shortcut keys or the detachable keyboard stand, both of which will be available for an additional cost. And, since your Apple warranty won’t be valid, you can purchase a three-year warranty through Modbook, which provides complete coverage for the first year free of charge. If you’d prefer to avoid supplying your own MacBook, you’ll also be able to pre-order a complete device from $3,999 and up, depending on the model.

‘Mid 2014’ 27-Inch iMac Also Referenced on Apple Support Page

Following yesterday’s spotting of an unreleased “Mac mini (Mid 2014)” on an Apple support page, French site MacPlus noticed [Google Translate] another entry on the same page mentioning a Mid 2014 27-inch iMac model. Both the Mac mini and iMac entries have since been removed from the page, although they are still visible on a cached version of the page from yesterday.

imac_mid_2014_27_listing
Apple did release a new low-end Mid 2014 21.5-inch iMac last month, but the remainder of the iMac lineup remained untouched and those machines are still considered Late 2013 models.

While the Mac mini entry has been taken as a hint that an upgrade may be imminent, especially since the machine has not been updated since October 2012, the iMac entry may point more towards the inclusions being an error. With the new low-end iMac having been added just last month, it seems unlikely that further iMac updates will occur in the near future.

It is possible Apple may have planned for a broader iMac update in the middle of the year with the low-end model appearing as part of that refresh, but the company may have changed plans due to a lack of chip availability or other factors. Alternatively, it may simply be an error unrelated to Apple’s product launch plans.

Apple Reminding Shoppers of Upcoming ‘Sales Tax Holiday’ Discounts [Mac Blog]

As spotted by iClarified, Apple is now reminding customers of upcoming “sales tax holidays” that allow residents in several US states to purchase select Apple gear without paying an additional sales tax charge. Customers potentially could save hundreds of dollars by purchasing high-priced items like MacBooks during this annual discount opportunity.

sales-tax-holiday

If your state offers a tax holiday this summer, you can buy select Apple products without paying sales tax.* When shopping online, sales tax will appear during checkout, but you’ll see the correct tax amount on your email order confirmation.

The states that offer these summertime tax holidays that extend to Apple products include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, South Carolina and Tennessee. You can find a list of dates and qualifying items here. In most states, the tax-free holiday begins August 1st and lasts only a few days.

Life on the ISS as seen through social media

Being hip to PR is certainly part of the job description for NASA astronauts, but some are especially social media-savvy. Take fresh ISS resident Gregory “Reid” Wiseman: the man knows he’s in a privileged position to take photos and videos, and holy crap has he shared. Via Twitter, Reid has provided nearly 500 stunning images of Earth, the ISS, his fellow astronauts and even a prosaic toilet repair — sorry, space toilet repair. Wiseman was also the first astronaut to post a Vine in space, and has so far posted subjects like a massive lightning storm over Texas and the sun going around in a circle and never setting. Wiseman isn’t quite as chatty as Canadian colleague Chris Hadfield yet, but he’s only been aboard for 45 days. Anyway, if we had his view (as shown in the gallery and Vines below), we’d be speechless too.
