Fleksy Keyboard 3.0: New themes, customizations, and the all new Fleksy Store

Fleksy 3.0 - Surface Design

Looking for a new keyboard to spice up your typing style? Now is probably a good time to try “the world’s fastest keyboard.”

Just announced is Fleksy 3.0 – a new look, theme store, and new customizations to the popular keyboard. The theme store is put in place for premium users to enjoy new themes such as “Deep Blue” and “Liquid Sky.” Other customizations will be available to users that have already subscribed to the premium price tag.

One interesting point to make is the decision for staying with the company’s premium business model, rather than switching to a “free with paid themes” model like the popular Swiftkey Keyboard. Many people are still buying the premium version, with downloads reaching more than 30% growth every month since December.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Also available with the update is support for 17 new languages. The company previously announced that the languages were available in beta, but now they’re here for everyone to enjoy.

If you’d like to give Fleksy a try, head to the download link below. Do it!

Fleksy 3.0 launches on Android, introduces major redesign and premium features.

Doubling down on premium business model

SAN FRANCISCO — July 23, 2014 — Fleksy, the fastest keyboard in the world, has launched version 3.0 today, featuring an update on the keyboard’s award-winning design and the introduction of premium themes and content.

Introduced with today’s update, Fleksy Store will offer the ability to download premium content such as themes and customizations. Six new premium themes are available, including “Deep Blue” and “Liquid Sky”, and all Fleksy premium users can choose a free bonus theme. The update also introduces an evolution of the iconic, minimal look of Fleksy, using brand new colors and animations.

“The average Fleksy user uses our product 180 times a day, and spends 1.5 hours looking at the keyboard each and every day. We believe this exposure gives us a fantastic platform to offer premium content and customizations for the keyboard” said Ioannis Verdelis, Founder and COO of Fleksy. “By introducing Fleksy Store, we have an unbounded opportunity to expand with premium product features, while maintaining the clean and simple Fleksy experience which appeals to first time users”.

Fleksy confirmed it will double down on its premium business model, with Fleksy Store only available to premium customers on Android as well as iOS this coming fall.

“Fleksy has built its recognition as the best keyboard title in Google Play – we are now the fastest, most accurate, and best designed keyboard out there. Even in the presence of free alternatives, people are willing to pay a premium when it comes to world-class design and next-gen features for their keyboard, and for good reason, given just how much time you spend on it every day. Downloads have been growing 30% monthly since launching last December, and our conversions to paid users have been increasing dramatically as well. It’s great testament to the quality of our product and shows that the keyboard is a huge part of the overall phone experience, for both Android and iOS” said Kosta Eleftheriou, Founder and CEO of Fleksy.

Also included are 17 new languages, which were only available in beta until today, bringing blazing-fast typing to a whole new group of users all over the world. The extensive list of new languages includes Hebrew, Croatian, Lithuanian, Albanian, Norwegian, Tagalog, Catalan and much more. Based on billions of words typed so far, Fleksy has also significantly improved accuracy for all 40 supported languages so far.

Fleksy is available on Google Play and at http://android.fleksy.com/

Amazon adds ‘hundreds of thousands of songs’ to Prime Music

amazon_prime_music

Amazon on Wednesday announced the recent addition of “hundreds of thousands of songs” and hundreds of playlists to its Prime Music service. Included as part of an Amazon Prime account, the experience allows for access to over one million songs at no additional cost. Members can listen via their Android, iOS, PC, Mac, and via their website. Oh, and let’s not forget Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Fire HDX tablets, too!

“The response we’ve had to Prime Music has far exceeded our expectations and we’re excited to make Prime Music even more valuable for Prime members,” said Steve Boom, VP of Digital Music for Amazon.

It’s not immediately clear what sort of success Amazon is actually having with the Prime Music though we suspect it’s doing well for itself. For those interested there’s a giant list of recently added playlists with brief descriptions at the link below.

Fleksy on Android gets updated to Version 3.0, introduces new look and Languages

Fleksy on AndroidFleksy on Android has today been updated to version 3.0 which introduces a new look to the keyboard as well as adding new options for users to customize their keyboard with themes. There are 5 new themes that can be purchased, the first of which is free for all owners of the paid version. The new update also adds 17 new languages to the app that were previously only available in the beta, bringing the officially supported total to a staggering 40 languages.

The Store where themes can be bought is also newly launched, featuring only on the paid app. It’s definitely an interesting way for Fleksy to monetize their app, though their userbase has proven to be quite loyal. With between 1,000,000-5,000,000 downloads of their free app and 10,000-50,000 downloads of the paid app (though that doesn’t include people who have converted to premium through the free app), Fleksy seems to be growing quite quickly, also mentioning that users have been increasingly switching from the free app to the paid app at a conversion rate of about 20% in the US market.

If you’re hoping to see what all the fuss is about, you can either download the free app or the paid app is currently 50% off for just one more day; Play Store links are below.

Dropbox for Business lets you limit your coworkers’ access to shared files

Dropbox

Dropbox for Business is good for collaborating on files stored in the cloud, but it hasn’t had fine-grained permission control — not great if you have a sensitive project you’d rather not share with the folks in Accounts Receivable. You’ll be glad to hear, then, that Dropbox is introducing some much-needed access limits. You can now say which of your colleagues can edit or view a given file, and you can both set expiry dates and passwords for shared links. In other words, contractors won’t get to peek at that big company report once their work is done. The new tricks are available through Dropbox for Business’ early access program today, and there are promises of more features within a few months; they’ll get the ability to search for text within files, work on Office documents with others and preview that same content on Android.

LittleBits’ latest module lets you connect your creations to the internet

The magnetic, interconnecting circuit boards that make up LittleBits’ library of electronic modules make it easy to build all sorts of neat (and noisy) devices with almost no technical knowledge at all — but if you want to create something that connects to the cloud, you’re out of luck. Well, you were: today LittleBits is announcing the Cloud Bit, a new module that, as company CEO and founder Ayah Bdeir puts it, allows builders to “just add internet” to almost anything. Bdeir tells me that it’s gives the average person an easy and open way to contribute to the Internet of Things without wasting time prototyping devices from scratch. She also says that the module is a landmark in changing the perception of LittleBits from toy, to tool.

“I don’t like the LEGO comparison,” she says, bemoaning a misconception that LittleBits is little more than an educational child’s toy. LEGO was an inspiration when she started the company, she admits, but so was C++ and more complicated hardware projects. “In the beginning… a lot of the stuff you could do with it was sort of more boyish and playful, so that’s what the world saw us as. Since the beginning of the year we’ve been launching more powerful modules.” More complex modules — like the Arduino module and today’s WiFi-enabled Cloud Bit — raise the ceiling of complexity for potential LittleBits projects. It’s her hope that the product will be used for rapid prototyping of new ideas in addition to being a fun hobby toy. “If you wanted to recreate a Nest or recreate a Sonos or a DropCam, you could. If you wanted to create the next billion dollar idea, you could do that as well.” It’s about versatility, and the more modules LittleBits creates, the more it has.

That said, Bdier is quick to clarify that LittleBits isn’t competing with Nest — but explains that LittleBits projects equipped with the new WiFi module can be configured to perform similar functions. As an example, the CEO shows me a simple LittleBits build that makes up a smart doorbell. It’s little more than a power source, a button, an LED light and the new WiFi module, but its core functionality hangs on the last component. When the button is pressed, the Cloud Bit sends a signal to IFTTT, which uses a custom script to send the user a text message. Another demo build shows me how a user can create setups to toggle lights or unlock doors (using the appropriate Bits, of course) by activating the Cloud Bit remotely using an included web app or custom API. In total, the new module can communicate three ways, Bdier tells me: bit to web, web to bit or bit to bit — allowing separate LittleBit builds to talk directly to each other.

Bdier says the Cloud Module is the easiest way to create an internet-connected device, and it really is pretty easy. Using the same components that will be available in the $99 LittleBits Cloud Starter Bundle launching today, I was able to create my own SMS doorbell in a matter of minutes. It’s something I lack the technical skills to build the traditional way, and it certainly did come together much faster than it would have if I had to design and prototype it myself. I can see where Bdier is coming from: with the right LittleBits modules, it would be easy to create a working model of a Kickstater-worthy idea before launching into proper development.

Between the Cloud Bit, the Arduino module and the 262 other components available in LittleBits’ Pro Library, there’s more than enough technology available to remove the product from the “toy” perception it started out with (heck, even we were guilty of making that ‘LEGO’ comparison). That said, it’s still a fun product to tinker with, even if you aren’t building the next big Kickstarter success. In addition to launching the $59 Cloud Bit module, the company says that its products will be hitting retail for the first time this fall, and will be available at 2,000 Radio Shack locations by the end of the year.

eBay’s ticket site StubHub says it’s the victim of a ‘global fraud ring’

StubHub has revealed that it’s been the victim of a global fraud operation that’s lasted longer than a year. Rather than being hacked, however, criminals obtained user details from other websites and keylogging software, then proceeded to make purchases on the eBay-owned ticket site. Company official Glenn Lehrman has told Reuters that authorities in the US, Canada and the UK will conduct arrests later today, at which point more details will be released. Worried users of the service should relax, for the moment at least, since the company has promised that any unauthorized transactions were spotted and refunded back in 2013.

OS X Yosemite Public Beta Launches Tomorrow, July 24

In a coordinated release today, a number of publications have released official overviews of the latest OS X Yosemite beta build alongside word of Apple’s plans to open up the public beta tomorrow, July 24. As noted by The Loop, the public beta of Yosemite will be the same build released to developers on Monday.

The public beta version of OS X Yosemite is the same version released to developers on Monday, so to start off, consumers and developers will be running the same software. However, the developer version of Yosemite will be updated more often over the next few months than the public beta version. This is so developers can continue to test their software with the latest operating system available. Consumers really don’t need updates that frequently.

yosemite_public_beta_machines
As far as the overviews designed to bring members of the public beta up to speed as the program launches, the general feeling is positive. Some note, however, that many of Yosemite’s best features involve integration with iOS 8 and will be inaccessible during the public beta as the program covers only OS X. Here are a few snippets:

Dana Wollman, Engadget

For anyone who thought OS X was getting stale, that it was evolving a little too gradually, you’ll definitely want to check out Yosemite: It ushers in a new, iOS-inspired design, along with some new, iOS-like features. In my week of testing, I’ve found the updated look to be more visually pleasing than the previous version, yet still easy to navigate. The new features are generally welcome too, though some admittedly feel more granular than others.

Darrell Etherington, TechCrunch

We’ve had some time with the pre-release build ahead of today’s launch, and our time spent with the next version of Apple’s desktop OS has proven one thing: Yosemite offers a host of great new features for users new to Mac and experienced Apple fans alike. Even the pre-launch build feels like a solid step-up from Mavericks, which bodes well for the finished result that should launch once Apple irons out the bugs and incorporates user feedback from its beta test program.

Lauren Goode, Re/code

I like its new design, the small improvements in Safari and Messages, and what appear to be promising fixes in Mail. It has already made a better impression on me than Mavericks did right out of the gate. But it’s also still very much a work in progress.

The official launch of OS X Yosemite to the general public will come later this year, likely in the October timeframe. The public beta program is limited to the first one million users to sign up on Apple’s site.

iPhone Camera Supplier Sony Investing $345 Million to Boost Image Sensor Production [iOS Blog]

As hinted at in an earlier report from Nikkei, Sony today confirmed it is investing 35 billion yen ($345 million) to increase the production of image sensors for smartphones and tablets, reports Reuters.

sonyexmor_imx220s
The electronics firm will use the 35 billion yen to boost production of stacked CMOS sensors at two factories in Kyushu, Japan as well as complete work at a factory it recently purchased from Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics. This investment will increase manufacturing by 13 percent, allowing Sony to produce up to 68,000 wafers a month by August 2015.

Sony is a leader in the imaging sensor market, supplying camera modules for major mobile phone and tablet manufacturers, including Apple and its iPhone since the iPhone 4s. Sony is rumored to be supplying Apple with a 13-megapixel Exmor IMX220 rear camera sensor and possibly the front-camera module for the iPhone 6.

The majority of Brits are disabling government-backed porn filters

Don’t be too shocked, but the UK government’s porn filter isn’t proving very popular. A new report from communications regulator Ofcom reveals that just one in every seven customers are letting the big four UK ISPs guard them from porn and other online nasties. While tiny minorities of users at Virgin Media (four percent), BT (five percent) and Sky (eight percent) opted to keep the filter, TalkTalk ranked as a significant outlier: it reports that 36 percent of customers enabled the government-mandated filters on their home router. TalkTalk puts it down to the fact it pre-ticks the selection box, meaning more customers are likely to keep the option enabled on their account.

Since December 2013, all new subscribers to these ISPs have been forced into an “unavoidable choice,” which allows them to either enable or disable blocks on adult content (including sex, drugs, alcohol, weapons and file-sharing). Virgin Media has shirked that responsibility somewhat, as it only enabled filters in February and has since presented the choice to only 35 percent of customers. However, it blames its complicated installation process (which requires a lengthy engineer visit) for the lack of coverage. Ofcom’s findings indicate that a large number of UK households want to be the master of their broadband destiny. Not surprising, really, given that the government has erroneously blocked educational, medical and emergency resources in the past.
