OnePlus One will cost under £290 / €350 in UK and Europe

It’s just seven days until OnePlus launches its first Android flagship, but that hasn’t stopped the company drip-feeding news about the device. Surprisingly, the outfit promises that the unit will cost under £290 in the UK, €350 in Europe and $3,000 HKD in Hong Kong — which we’re taking to mean £289, €349 and $2,999, respectively. By way of comparison, that’s £10 less than you’d pay for a Nexus 5 and £20 more than you’d need for a Lumia 1320. Now, given that the handset is shipping with a Snapdragon 801, 5.5-inch 1080p display and a 3,100mAh battery, what is OnePlus likely to scrimp on in order to get it down to that price? Why not dive in over at the forums and speculate with us.

Mt. Gox faces liquidation as recovery plans scrapped

A Japanese court-appointed administrator is now in control of Mt. Gox following an unsuccessful attempt to save the business. The Bitcoin exchange filed for bankruptcy in February after losing 850,000 Bitcoins, though it later found around a quarter of them. That’s still a $340 million loss at current rates, but the company recently went back online and still held out hope for a sale of the business. Now the most likely outcome is liquidation, as the court declared any rehabilitation unrealistic. It added that it would probably now investigate CEO Mark Karpeles too — who yesterday told a US judge he was unwilling to travel to the states and answer questions. The next step is to appoint a trustee and divvy up whatever’s left amongst creditors (and lawyers).

Project Tango teardown reveals the wonders of the phone’s 3D sensing tech

Project Tango's infrared projector in action

Want to get a better understanding of Google’s 3D-sensing Project Tango smartphone beyond the usual promo videos? iFixit is more than happy to show you now that it has torn down the device for itself. The close-up identifies many of the depth mapping components in the experimental handset, including the infrared and fisheye cameras (both made by OmniVision), motion tracking (from InvenSense) and dual vision processors (from Movidius).

However, the real centerpiece is the infrared projector. As you can see from the pretty light show pictured here, Project Tango maps the environment in much the same way as the original Kinect: it’s creating a grid of dots that it measures to calculate distance. Other parts are relatively pedestrian, such as the Snapdragon 800 processor and 5-inch display, but it’s clear from the teardown that they play second fiddle here — this is an imaging device that just happens to double as a phone. You can see this for yourself at the source link.

[VIDEO] Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shot by a .50 calibre rifle in typical RatedRR Style

Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shotWhether you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy S5 or not, I think we can agree that it probably shouldn’t be maliciously destroyed. Okay, maybe some of you wouldn’t mind having a go at destroying one, and you’ll be the ones who will like this video. The YouTube channel, RatedRR, is well known for its almost artistic destruction of current and new technology and the latest device in the literal crosshairs is the Galaxy S5. Check out the video below where a Samsung Galaxy S5 gets shot with a .50 rifle:

There are very vehement groups in the Android community who either stand by the plastic construction of the Galaxy S5 or are strongly against it, and this is probably a score for the anti-plastic team (as impractical as this test actually is). Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy S5 is absolutely torn to shreds after getting hit on its top edge with nothing left after but a smouldering plastic frame.

RatedRR also performs some basic stress tests prior to the shooting including a drop test and a soak test. Curiously, they fail the Galaxy S5 despite the fact that the device has an IP67 rating, though it does appear that the back cover was removed while it was still wet, possibly exposing the inner hardware to the water. It’s definitely not the most scientific of tests, but there’s always something hypnotic about inanimate objects getting shot in slow motion. Still, I wished they’d just given the phone to use instead…

Let us know what you think about the video in the comments below.

Another Alleged iPhone 6 Case Surfaces with Cutouts for Moved Power Button, New Volume Controls

New photos showing what appears to be another case for Apple’s larger-screen iPhone 6 have been posted by Nowhereelse.fr [Google Translate]. While details about the case’s exact length are unknown, the images are said to have come from a Chinese accessory maker and show a case designed for the next-generation iPhone, similar to cases pictured last week and those on display at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair yesterday.

The case feature slightly rounded edges, similar to the design of the iPhone 5c and consistent with design drawings said to be for the iPhone 6. Like other cases and in line with a claim from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the case also includes a hole for a button along the upper right side of the device, which may be the new location of the power button. Rectangular volume control buttons similar to the fifth-generation iPod Touch are also notably present.

Apple’s iPhone 6 is expected to launch in two sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches. The majority of leaks so far have depicted the 4.7-inch version, as it is reportedly on track for a release this fall. Apple is said to have been running into production issues with the 5.5-inch version, with that model likely seeing a release later this year or early next year.

Along with a larger screen, Apple’s next-generation iPhone is expected to include a thinner profile, upgraded A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved camera featuring optical image stabilization. A report earlier this week from Jefferies analyst Peter Misek also claimed that Apple is negotiating with carriers to increase the price of the iPhone 6 by $100.

One does run into many NAS drives also doubling up as print servers.

It serves as the baseline for all other backups. Now if all these are a bit too much for a non-professional, one can consider outsourcing the work to someone who is reliable and has experience in data backup and storage.
