You can now stream BT Sport on Google Chromecast

The US may have beaten the UK to the punch on Chromecast hardware, but us Brits now have access to another thing the Americans don’t: live premiership football. Following news that it was expanding its apps to support the £30 streaming accessory, BT today switched live the necessary features to allow Sport subscribers to beam content from their iOS or Android device directly to their TV. Of course, you will need a BT Broadband package or be BT Sport subscriber to gain access to the live streams. If you’ve already met that requirement, then it’s a simple case of hitting the “Cast” button in either of BT’s official apps to enjoy football, rugby, Moto GP, tennis or UFC coverage on your nice big flatscreen.

Delta to equip flight attendants with Nokia Lumia 1520s

The Lumia 820 just reached EOL at Delta. The airline’s 20,000 flight attendants will be stepping up to the significantly larger Nokia Lumia 1520 “phablet” come this fall, matching the larger form factor that AA currently has in the sky. The 1520s will include flight manuals and can support on-board sales, letting employees process credit card payments on the fly. The move will also enable flight attendants to ditch the 500-page, five-pound manuals they’re used to bringing on board, saving Delta more than $1 million each year in fuel and printing costs. Meanwhile, pilots are still on track to receive Microsoft’s Surface 2 — that process should be complete by the end of 2015. The 1520 will make its way on board much sooner, though. Delta is expecting to issue the Windows Phone 8.1 handsets beginning in October, with all FAs expected to have one in hand by the end of the year.

Xbox One now shares gameplay footage direct to YouTube

We can all agree that sharing gameplay footage on Xbox One via SkyDrive OneDrive isn’t really the best social solution. Okay, so there’s Twitch, too, but the holy grail of video sharing lies with YouTube. And, as of tomorrow, Xbox One owners will get just that as an app update will bring the much desired ability to share Game DVR footage directly to a user’s YouTube channel. It’s really as simple as that. Once the update hits, you’ll need to dive into the console’s settings menu and enable the social sharing feature first, but that’s about as deep as it gets.

The ‘father of manga’ joins Google’s Cultural Institute

One of the (if not the) most influential manga artists ever, Osamu Tezuka, has joined the digital halls of the Google Cultural Institute. If there was no Tezuka, there would have probably been no Dragonball, no One Piece… well, you get the picture. The collection includes a Google Street View tour of the museum founded in his honor, as well as a beautifully curated selection of photos, artwork and video clips. It’s all been timed to coincide with Atomu’s (Astro Boy) birthday, the robot boy that’s now 62 years old– and starred in Japan’s first (yes, first) anime. While the collection might not touch the mind-blowing 700 total manga titles the artist completed in his lifetime, it’s a mighty well-presented primer.

EE, Orange and T-Mobile phone bills set to rise on May 28th

SONY DSC

If you missed the postman this morning, then we hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you might be returning home to a letter detailing an imminent increase to your monthly mobile phone bill. As of May 28th, customers on EE’s 4G network or the 3G sub-brands Orange and T-Mobile will be expected to fork out another 2.7 percent on top of what they’re already paying each month — the charges for anything beyond your allowance will go up slightly, too. We’ll leave you to crunch the numbers, but basically the price hike is in line with inflation, meaning you kind of agreed you’d be cool with it when signing those T&Cs you read so thoroughly. If you want to cancel your contract, then, we’re afraid you’ll be paying early termination fees. If you signed a new contract or upgraded after January 23rd this year, however, then nothing’s going to change for you. Under Ofcom’s rules — the ones O2 ain’t following — anyone in that situation could exit their contract scot-free, and EE’d likely prefer the business. If only our data caps rose with inflation, too.

Samsung’s Goals for 2012: ‘Beating Apple is #1 Priority’

Internal documents included in the second patent trial between Samsung and Apple last week revealed how Apple viewed Android, calling for a “Holy War” against Google and expressing concern about competition from larger-screened, lower-priced Android phones. A new set of documents reported by Re/code and AppleInsider reverses this perspective, showing how Samsung was laser-focused on Apple with the objective of beating the Cupertino company as its “#1 priority” in 2012.

apple-samsung-2011b
The internal document outlines the lessons Samsung learned in 2011 as it continued development on its Galaxy line of phones and faced a patent infringement lawsuit from Apple. Samsung considered the threat from Apple to be “extremely real and urgent” and communicated to employees that “everything must be [in the] context of beating Apple” in 2012.

Samsung listed the expected features of the upcoming iPhone 5 and predicted how Apple’s iPhone would perform in the marketplace. The Korean company also detailed how it would boost its own Galaxy branding and work with both carriers and retailers to expand its retail presence to combat growing consumer interest in the iPhone.

Samsung also detailed a strategy of “continuous” branding campaigns where “Galaxy Nexus rolls into Galaxy Note into GSIII,” playing upon Apple’s consistent branding of iPhone across generations of its products.

“Drive consumer pull,” Samsung’s Galaxy branding document strategized, hoping that “customers walk into stores asking for Samsung.” To get there, Samsung said it needed to “understand why customers buy Apple,” and then “develop countermeasures by carrier/retail.”

The documents reveal that Samsung shifted its product lineup to serve carriers with 80% of the company’s product roadmap supporting carrier demands for joint projects, exclusive offers and low-cost handsets for entry-level consumers. Only 20% of its product lineup focused on high-end handsets like the Galaxy S3 and the Note II.

Samsung also spent billions on advertising to support its Galaxy phones with Apple-targeted ads that focused on iPhone line-waiters, Apple’s Genius Bar and more. Samsung credits the company’s 2012 “Next Big Thing” advertisements as “a tipping point” for the company’s branding and claimed in its opening arguments last week that Apple was taken aback by the edgy marketing campaign.

Moto X successor tipped as ‘Moto X+1′

moto_x_red_back_ag_720

There must be some seriously extensive research findings that says people gravitate toward products with “one” in the name. According to oft-reliable Twitter leak source evleaks, the successor to the Moto X smartphone will be known as the Moto X+1. What’s more, the device is said to be “coming soon”. It’s unclear at this stage whether this is a code name or whether it might be the actual product name. We also would not be surprised if this was simply a way for Motorola to market and promote the device ahead of launch.

We should expect to see the new device debut later this year, perhaps in tandem with the Moto 360 smartwatch.

Launch apps from anywhere with Bar Launcher [App of the Day]

Bar Launcher 5

Need quick access to certain apps from anywhere on your phone? You may want to take a look at Bar Launcher.

Task switching is already pretty good on Android devices, but only for recently used apps. Bar Launcher is a simple app that puts a row of your favorite applications in your notification shade. The quick access to these applications can cut down on precious time.

If you need to get to an app that you haven’t used recently, you need to click your home button, navigate to the app drawer, and search through the pages of apps to find the right one. When Bar Launcher is enabled, it adds a persistent row of apps to the top of your notification shade. This basically eliminates the time you would usually have to take to find the right app.

Bar Launcher 4

We like this app because it’s simple, easy to use, functional, and doesn’t try to do more than it should. When you launch the app, you can instantly begin adding apps to your list. Up to 6 apps can be shown in a row at a time, and anything more than that can be accessed by clicking the overflow arrow. You can add as many or as few apps as you’d like to the rows. You can even customize your rows, leaving one for utilities, media, sharing, or pretty much anything else you choose.

There is, however, one drawback to the application. There needs to be a persistent notification in the status bar in order for the app to keep running. You have the option to hide the notification icon, but it still leaves a blank space in the status bar where the icon should be.

Bar Launcher 3

That certainly isn’t a deal breaker with us, and we understand why it’s there. Other than that one little gripe, we wouldn’t change a thing. It’s functional and simple, and that’s why we love it. Oh, and it’s free!

Download it from the Google Play Store link below.
