T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon also confirm Galaxy Note 4 pricing details and pre-order dates

Seems the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has received a rather well-timed set of announcements from all the major carriers. Some are a bit more up front and open about details than others.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Colors

T-Mobile will start pre-orders on September 24th at 9 a.m. Pricing is set at $0 down with $31.24 a month as your payment for 24 months.

AT&T is a little more convoluted in their announcement and availability, especially since they multiple purchasing options. They are the first to offer pre-orders though with the date being September 19th. That is tomorrow. With expected shipping on October 14th. They don’t go out of their way to say it will be launched officially October 17th, but rather that  “Full retail sales will be announced at a later date.” I wonder if they are banking on pre-order to deplete stocks. Pricing will depend on you. Next 18 will be $34.42 per month and Next 12 will be $41.30 per month. A new two-year contract puts it at $299.99 and full retail is $825.99.

Verizon is about as forth coming with information as ever. Basically they don’t say much of anything in their news releases. What they do let us know though is that the Note 4 will be available for pre-order starting September 19th.  Pricing offers up the same $299.99 two-year contract price as AT&T. They don’t offer the monthly details on the Verizon Edge program. Assuming they are pricing the device at $825.99 like AT&T, then on the Edge program is should be in the neighborhood of 41.29 for 20 months. That is just a guess though.

I heard from Sprint prior to thinking that I should think about the other guys. Sprint is putting the Note 4 up for pre-order on September 26th with a launch date set for October 17th. Pricing is $0 down and $30 a month for 24 months. However, they list the SRP at $720 (excluding tax).

None of them detail any color options. However, Samsung’s press release mentions Charcoal Black and Frost White. They also state that the Note 4 launches October 17th. While a few of the big guys above didn’t want to push that date out just yet. Samsung also tosses in US Cellular in their news, but US Cellular hasn’t published anything official yet. I think it is pretty safe to assume that they will be launching on the 17th of October also.

T-Mobile to soon carry the ZTE ZMAX

tmobile_720

Whenever people think about getting their hands on a phablet, the thing that stops them is the price tag. Smartphones with huge screens are really expensive, just look at the Note 4. But it seems ZTE has a solution for you. The Chinese giant has decided to release the ZTE ZMAX along with T-Mobile, with a 5.7-inch screen, the smartphone will cost only $252 without any contract.

nexus2cee_carousel-zte-zmax-all-380x380-11The huge display features a 1280×720 resolution, other than that, it is running on Android 4.4 KitKat, 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, Adreno 305 GPU, GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera with a 1MP front-facing shooter, 16GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot, NFC, and a gigantic 3400 mAh battery. The phone has a slim plastic body, and the best thing is that the user interface it is on is really close to the stock Android.

If you want to get the phone through T-Mobile’s installment plan, then it will cost you $10.50 on a 24 month plan. It’s definitely not a bad phone, and it will be a good choice for people looking for a cheap alternative of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It will be available at T-Mobile starting from Wednesday, September 24th.

Are you looking forward to grab it?

T-Mobile’s Uncarrier 7.0 plan is here, check it out before the 23rd!

tmus-paintedwall1_large

Today is the day! T-Mobile’s new Wi-Fi CellSpots are available in stores, and the other facets of their Uncarrier 7.0 plan are in full effect!

T-Mobile – Canton, OH

After a week of waiting, I walked into my local T-Mobile corporate store to see about picking up a new Wi-Fi CellSpot. They had them in stock, but barely knew what the devices were, let alone how they would process an order for one, so I waited for the kind representative who had the bad luck to have to assist me to read up on what exactly the device is, does, and how to sell it.

Insert 10 minutes of Jeopardy theme music.

The representative disappeared behind the employee doors and re-emerged with the coveted Wi-Fi CellSpot. I began to salivate, idly thumbing the raised numbers on my debit card, ready for throw my $25 at T-Mobile. He placed the box on the counter before me.

T-Mobile CellSpot

Another five minutes of reading followed by a confused “I’m not sure I can sell this yet” and the near hospitalization of the representative, were I not a praying man.

After another 20 minutes of listening to the salesman talk to customer service he redirected his attention to me with bad news, and some unexpected good news.

The bad news was that I wouldn’t be paying the $25 deposit required of post-pay customers to take home my very own CellSpot today, I would have to wait seven business days for the router to be shipped to me. The good news, however was that because I came in before September 23rd, I wouldn’t have to pay the deposit at all.

T-Mobile CellSpot receipt

If you want one of these bad-boys, get to a store before the 23rd so you don’t have to pay the deposit.

T-Mobile announces the ZTE ZMAX; An ultra affordable 5.7-inch Android device

Looking for a big screen on a small budget? T-Mobile has you covered with the announcement of the latest device headed to the unpredictable carrier. The ZTE ZMAX will be headed to magenta next week with some interesting specs and price tag.

ZTE ZMAXZTE ZMAX rearThe ZMAX manages to pull down a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720. That isn’t a quad HD screen, but on a 5.7-inch device is it doable for an average consumer who wants size. Under the hood it packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor at 1.2Ghz and is backed with 2GB of RAM. Internal storage locks in at 16GB, with less user storage of course. It does offer an SD card slot along with NFC. For photos the ZMAX packs a modest 8MP rear camera and a paltry 1MP front shooter. The whole device will launch with Android 4.4. Looking at the images of the device, it appears to be a pretty stock looking experience too. That doesn’t always mean anything though, but we will remain hopeful. What is almost impressive about the ZMAX though is the fact that they packed a 3,400 mAh battery inside a shell that is just 0.35-inches. They have the battery rated for 14 hours of talk time and 15 days standby time.

It certainly isn’t the prettiest of devices ever made and whats up with those capacitive keys at the bottom?!?!!? T-Mobile fails to offer up an official price tag, but they do list out the EIP price of $0 down and $10.50 a month for 24 months. Math wise that pans out to $252 full price. That isn’t to shabby considering the specs. It is set to be available September 24th. with a MetroPCS version following later this year.

T-Mobile Rep: Wi-Fi calling routers won’t be in-stores tomorrow

T-Mobile recently announced their latest UnCarrier 7.0 at an event last week that every T-Mobile customer will benefit from. It entails a near free wireless router to enhance your calling experience at home over Wi-Fi – while we do know that this router normally cost a steep $200 if purchased separately on Amazon,  it will cost you $25 down if you decided to grab it at your local T-Mobile store. I know this is exactly what I planned to do tomorrow. Sadly, I just got pinged back from T-Mobile regarding the router and my planned trip to the local store.

14 - 1
T-Mobile says on a Google plus post that they will not have the devices in-store tomorrow, but you will be able to have one sent to you.  Of course this means you have to wait for them to ship it to you or you can call 611 and have an order ready to ship pronto. I imagine that T-Mobile is expecting a rather large volume of customers hankering for the router and it does make some logistical sense to ship them directly to customers houses from their warehouses, despite the fact it would be easier for us to walk straight in, make our purchase and walk out the door though.

Anyone else out there changing their plans now that T-Mobile has alerted to the fact that the stores won’t have them on the shelf? Maybe John was wrong. Either way, be sure to give your store a quick buzz before you burn up time and probably gas to go find out.

ZTE’s new supersized phone packs a two-day battery and a low price

ZTE ZMAX for T-Mobile

If you like the prospect of a giant smartphone but find even LG’s G Vista too rich for your blood, ZTE might have something that’s more up your alley. It just unveiled the ZMAX, a 5.7-inch device that hopefully won’t crush your bank account. The 720p screen, quad-core Snapdragon 400 chip, 16GB of expandable storage and 8-megapixel rear camera are nothing special, but you’re getting a lot of battery for the money; the 3,400mAh power pack is estimated to last for two days, or more than enough for a busy weekend. You might also like the not-quite-stock (read: potentially very speedy) Android 4.4 interface. ZTE’s low-cost behemoth will only be available through T-Mobile when it ships on September 24th. However, you’ll only have to pay $10.50 per month over two years to own the ZMAX, or $252 total — not too shabby considering that other phones this big frequently cost two or three times as much.

The NSA broke into big German networks to map their data traffic

T-Mobile sign at IFA 2014

It’s no secret that the NSA’s spies have been busy in Germany. However, it’s now apparent that their activities in the country may reach much further than just targeting important leaders and suspects. Der Spiegel has published leaks showing that the US agency broke into the networks of both tech giant Deutsche Telekom and regional provider Netcologne as part of an effort to map as much of the internet as possible. Since the initiative (Treasure Map) is meant to pinpoint individual devices as well as infrastructure, the discovery hints that the NSA can potentially monitor a huge amount of German data traffic on routers, servers and personal gadgets.

It’s not clear just what kind of surveillance is taking place. While the mapping is a concern by itself, it’s not certain that the NSA is actively tracking everyone’s devices. When Britain’s GCHQ infiltrated German satellite companies like Stellar, for example, it was interested in watching particular suspects rather than everyone on the network. Even if your average person off the street isn’t a target, though, the discovery could put the NSA into hot water once again. Netcologne’s regional status suggests that the intrusion came from within Germany, which would violate national law — in other words, the US isn’t about to improve its souring relations with der Deutschland any time soon.

Wi-Fi calling coming to AT&T, just not until 2015

AT&T

T-Mobile won’t be the only carrier with Wi-Fi calling, AT&T is committing to bringing it to their customers as well. It just won’t become a reality until sometime in 2015. Ralph De La Vega, president and CEO of AT&T’s new Mobile and Business Solutions group made mention of it today at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference. Mr. De La Vega was certainly targeting T-Mobile with his comments on the matter.

“We’re very focused on making sure it’s a great experience for customers, but we see it as a complement, not a replacement,” he said. “We feel good about a great nationwide network with unlimited talk and text.”

AT&T hasn’t yet launched their Voice over LTE service and that is going to be a critical component to have in place prior to any thoughts of launching a Wi-Fi calling experience. They want to ensure that the cell handoff from their network to your Wi-Fi is seamless without dropping your call. Which I can respect. However, attempting to leverage the technology as a way for carriers with a smaller coverage footprint to boost coverage is a bit over the top.

“We don’t have a burning desire or need for coverage. Other operators with less coverage may pursue it more aggressively.”

I doubt this topic would have come up at all if T-Mobile hadn’t made their announcement along with Apple announcing support for Wi-Fi calling being built into iOS 8. It isn’t about other carriers with less coverage, it is about giving customers coverage where a carrier just can’t, like in your man cave in the basement. Everyone I know has that one room or spot in their home that drops calls or gives no signal, even in the deepest of coverage areas. Wi-Fi calling is all about helping customers stay connected. It seems that De La Vega is missing that aspect and down playing the need for the extra coverage.

What are your thoughts? Do you have that one lack of coverage spot at home or work that just kills you? Are you jumping to T-Mobile specifically for Wi-Fi calling, or have you just stuck it out with Google Voice or other voip apps?
