Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, Tab Pro tablets leaked ahead of official CES announcement
Samsung isn’t really well-known for keeping secrets, especially on the day that new products are being announced. We’ve all heard of a new line-up of Samsung tablets being announced soon, but it was just a matter of time before they were outed.
Though they still haven’t been officially announced, thanks to some popular sources we get to know about the tablets a few hours before they’re official. All of these tablets will be announced at the Samsung event later today at CES 2014 in Las Vegas.
This time around, the internals of the tablets are getting the upgrade, and the hardware is pretty much the same as the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014).
First up is the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2. It features a 12.2-inch 2,560×1,600 screen, and the 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 2MP front-facing camera can be found on all of the new tablets. It has a 9,500 mAh battery, and 32 or 64 GB on on-board storage. The Wi-Fi/3G version has a Exynos 5 Octa processor, and the LTE variant has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
Next is the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2. This is completely identical to the Note Pro 12.2, except there is no S Pen with this one. Along with the S Pen comes the added software for note-taking and multi-tasking. It will most likely be around a $50 price-jump to get the Note Pro, so if you need those added features, be ready to pay a little extra.
The Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 has a 10.1-inch screen, and the same resolution as the others. It has 2GB of RAM, 8,220 mAh battery, and 16 or 32 GB of on-board storage. Also, in case you didn’t make the connection, no S Pen with this one, either.
The Galaxy Tab 8.4 has an 8.4-inch screen, and -get this- a 2,560×1,600 screen. This one has a 2.3 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, and 2GB of RAM.
This is one of the products that Samsung does very well, so it’s definitely nice to see a new wave of tablets come out of the event today.

Our 2014 CES stage schedule is here and it’s awesome!

Sure, there’s a certain amount of creeping dread in the lead up to CES each year. It’s a sleep-deprived week spent elbowing our way through the packed halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The food is bad, the facilities few and far between and the hygiene practices of the tech-blogging community questionable, at best. But there are also plenty of things that make it one of the most exciting weeks of the year, not the least of which is our stage. As with the last couple of years, we’ve got a prime spot in the convention center lobby, where we’ll be speaking to some of the biggest and most innovative companies in the world of consumer electronics.
The list includes Sony, Ford, Pebble, Nokia, Leap Motion, Oculus, MakerBot, Lenovo, Samsung, AT&T and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, to name a few. You can check out the full schedule here and stay glued to our CES event hub for updates. See you on stage!

Samsung ad outs Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab Pro ahead of CES
In the days leading up to CES, there are always a few unfortunate products that are prematurely outed by banners being put up over night. In this case, the victims are Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note Pro and Galaxy Tab Pro, as shown by this massive ad at the South Hall of Las Vegas Convention Center. Stylus and SIM card slot aside, it’s hard to tell what else the pictured Galaxy Note Pro has to offer. Its screen size is also a mystery here, though rumors are pointing at 12.2 inches, which would make it Samsung’s largest mobile tablet to date. According to an earlier report by SamMobile, the Galaxy Tab Pro will come in two smaller sizes: 8.4 inches and 10.1 inches. All shall be revealed at Samsung’s press conference in Las Vegas tomorrow afternoon, so stay tuned.
Samsung’s SmartCam HD DIY security cameras do 1080p video indoors or outdoors
Just in case the NSA isn’t keeping a close enough watch over everything, you can use Samsung Techwin’s latest SmartCams (previously seen in 2012 and 2013) to do your own surveillance. The SmartCam separates from its competitors by recording 1080p video to an internal SD card, and has a version designed to work outside. That means that unlike Dropcam, for example, it’s not constantly uploading video to a remote server for storage and doesn’t require an add-on subscription to work. While that cuts out some of the cloud-based security Dropcam can offer, it combines with Samsung’s compression tech to enable these to use about 30 percent of the bandwidth other cameras require, and still lets owners tap in remotely for a peek whenever they like.
Both connect over WiFi, and can be configured from Android or iOS devices using the SmartCam app and WiFi Direct. Both claim excellent low-light video quality, and while the indoor version has a range of about 16 feet, the outdoor version extends to 50 feet. Beyond its extra viewing range, the outdoor version is ruggedized for the elements, and comes in two parts, keeping the power and WiFi module securely inside your home, connected to the camera outside via a network cable. The SmartCam HD and SmartCam HD Outdoor should hit shelves around March for $179 and $229, respectively.

Samsung’s new Smart Home service outlined, wants to connect to third-party services and products
We heard whispers that Samsung was planning big for CES, and we’re not just talking TV panels. It’s now revealed Smart Home, which attempts to tie together Smart TVs, home appliances and handheld smart devices into one single platform. Perhaps more importantly, the company says it’s going to collaborate with third-party partners to extend the platform to products and services beyond only those with Samsung branding.
At the middle of it all, there will be a single app that (as the picture above suggests) will get its hooks into all your wearables, phones and white goods with a cloud-based server keeping your data moving. Device Control will let users adjust lighting and temperature management through your smartphone. Meanwhile, Smart Home will also included embedded voice commands: if you say “going out” into your Galaxy Gear, then the system will automatically turn off your smart lighting and “selected appliances”, so presumably not your fridge. The, once out, Home View will let you tap into devices with cameras inside your house, offering up some not-so-covert video streams to your Galaxy phone. Alongside the new system, the company announced a new software protocol too, hoping to forge a new ecosystem — with Samsung in the middle of it all. Expect to hear more later this week.

Samsung hinting at Galaxy Gear 2?
Samsung’s UK arm looks to be hinting at the successor the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. A recent Twitter post shows the original Galaxy Gear listed above 2013 with only “What’s Next?” sitting above 2014. Presumably, this means the Galaxy Gear 2, however it could be a completely different product altogether. It’s worth pointing out that there’s no mention of “when” in 2014 we should see what’s next.
Samsung is reportedly set to soon introduce the follow up Galaxy Gear watch in this new year. Also on the horizon, a Samsung Galaxy Band device which tracks fitness and health-related stats. Either way, we’re on red alert for the details and will be happy to share what we learn.

CES takes place next week and Mobile World Congress follows next month. Both are prime venues to introduce new products or successors to existing devices.

Report says Samsung will debut Nexus 10 successor at CES
Take this for what you want, but Digitimes is saying Samsung will introduce a new Nexus 10 at CES next week. The source, which is as wrong as often as it is right, reports that the refreshed device will feature an AMOLED display. As to whether it will actually be branded with a “Nexus” title remains to be seen.
It’s obviously worth pointing out that Asus has been tossed about a few times as the hardware maker behind the next-generation of Nexus 10 tablet. Thankfully, we’ve only got a few days to go to find out whether Digitimes is correct with this one.
