Official CyanogenMod Nightlies come to Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-Pro-8.4

If you have grabbed yourself a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 but wanted to enjoy the device with a stock Android experience then you’ll be pleased to learn that the Tab has gotten CyanogenMod Nightly build support.

The device has been branded as ‘mondrianwifi‘ on the CyanogenMod website and the download comes in at just over 200MB.

As with any Nightly builds, expect there to be bugs, things that don’t work, and things that work pretty well, but with stock Android on a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, are you going to complain?

Samsung Galaxy S5 finally making its way to Virgin Mobile USA May 19th

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Samsung has a pretty good strong hold on device sales for a single model. The Samsung galaxy S5 is no different. The key to the dominance is pretty simple, put the device on as many carriers as possible. The big 4 in the states might be the biggest, but the other guys out there have a fair number of customers wanting the latest device too. We always knew Virgin Mobile USA was going to be getting the Galaxy S5, we just never knew when it would be available beyond Q2. That has changed as the new landing page at Virgin Mobile points us to May 19th as the official launch date for the device.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Virgin Mobile USAVirgin doesn’t offer up any pre-ordering options nor are they tossing out a price tag. They do offer no payments or interest on purchases of $99 if you qualify when you pay with Bill Me Later. The Galaxy S5 retails at $650 with Sprint and with Virgin being a Sprint company, we expect it to be about the same.

Any Virgin Mobile USA customers, or potential customers, looking to pick this up on the 19th?

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 poses for the camera

Galaxy Tab S 10.5_cover

Samsung shows no signs of stopping when it comes to pushing everything they come up with to the market, this is not exception.

We’ve recently posted some details regarding Samsung’s new tablet and this time around we bring you some pictures of said device. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.5 posed for some pictures and it looks really similar to Galaxy TabPRO/NotePRO 10.1 tablets they launched earlier this year, Samsung decided to go back to OLED displays, at least in this case. In comparison to Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO’s LCD panel this device is going to feature an AMOLED panel, 2560×1600 in resolution.

Judging by the pictures, Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is going to have a textured back, similar to the one on Samsung Galaxy S5. Front side of the device also follows the same pattern as previous devices along with the hardware button which looks the same as the one on previous tablet devices. In other specifications the tablet will come with an octa-core Exynos 5420 CPU with four 1.9GHz Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 cores, usual array of sensors, IR blaster, Samsung’s Magazine UX and Android 4.4 KItKat. You can find more details in a linked posted above.

Samsung’s next Android tablet looks like a supersized Galaxy S5

Samsung's rumored Galaxy Tab S

Samsung has already launched a cavalcade of new Android tablets this year, but it looks like the company isn’t quite done yet. SamMobile claims to have the first photos of the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, a recently rumored Android design that would mark Samsung’s return to slates with OLED displays. As the name suggests, it would have a 10.5-inch, 2,560 x 1,600 AMOLED panel that promises higher contrast and bolder colors than an LCD; there’s reportedly an 8.4-inch equivalent in the works, too.

However, the hardware surrounding that display may be as much of an attention-getter. Where the Tab Pro range aped the Galaxy Note 3, the Tab S looks like a Galaxy S5 writ large — you’d get the same dimpled plastic back and, apparently, the same fingerprint sensor. Connectors on the back also hint at a possible smart screen cover. About the only disappointment may be the performance, since there’s talk of the Tab S carrying the same 1.9GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor that we saw in the Tab Pro early this year. Assuming the leak is accurate, the biggest mystery may be when this (mostly) upgraded device hits store shelves.

Samsung axes Mobile Design lead in wake of Galaxy S5

Glam_Galaxy-S5_Black_01

Samsung have just shaken up the design department at the company by replacing the head of mobile design amongst criticism of the Galaxy S5 design.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was somewhat underwhelming and a ‘more of the same’ release by Samsung, much to the disappointment of consumers and in a market full of premium handsets, the Galaxy S5 stood out for its design.

The man responsible for the Galaxy S5 design, Chang Dong-hoon will be replaced by vice president for mobile design Lee Min-hyouk.

“The realignment will enable Chang to focus more on his role as head of the Design Strategy Team, the company’s corporate design center which is responsible for long-term design strategy across all of Samsung’s businesses, including Mobile Communications.”

Chang will continue to lead Samsung’s design center which overseas its overall design strategy, but perhaps the shakeup will mean we’ll see something different from Samsung for their Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S5 Dx spied briefly on Samsung website

galaxy-s5-mini-dx-leak

Another leak from @evleaks on Twitter has revealed what seems to be yet another device that Samsung have in the works dubbed the Galaxy S5 Dx.

The Galaxy S5 Dx will be available in more colours than the standard Galaxy S5 and will come with a model number of SM-G800, but any specs of the device are still undisclosed.

According to the leaked screenshot, the Galaxy S5 Dx looks pretty much ascetically like the released Galaxy S5, but available in a greater variety of colours. If that’s the extend to which the differences go then it will be interesting to see how Samsung market yet another variant of the same device along the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S5 Prime.

There is some speculation that the Galaxy S5 Dx is actually the real name for the heavily rumoured Galaxy S5 Mini which is set to feature a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 720p resolution, 1.5GB of RAM, and an 8-Megapixel rear camera.

That just leaves the question as to why they chose the name Galaxy S5 Dx? Perhaps it’s a codename? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Samsung, Nokia join 5G trials in Japan, but crazy speeds still far away

We hope you’re happy with 4G, because 5G’s magical land of unicorns and 10Gbps speeds still isn’t coming until 2020 or so. However, Japanese carrier DoCoMo is still hard at work developing the tech and has now begun trials with some formidable hardware allies. Those include Samsung (who already tested 1Gbps 5G hardware in Korea), along with Nokia, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent, to name a few. The group aims to see if high frequency bands (greater than 6GHz) can support speeds up to 10Gbps, even if masses of devices in a small area are vying for bandwidth. The first tests will be limited to an indoor research facility in Japan, then move to outdoor field trials next year. DoCoMo hopes standardization will come in 2016, but there’s a lot of hurdles to clear before the mythical 1-second wireless movie download is upon us.

Samsung’s new mirrorless camera tries to fuse style with modest specs

Samsung NX3000 mirrorless camera
For some, Samsung’s NX mini mirrorless camera went too far in catering to the style-minded; while it’s eye-catching, that small sensor and reduced control won’t please demanding shooters. Appropriately, the company is bridging the gap between the mini and the bigger NX300 with its new NX3000. It has a svelte profile closer to that of its tinier sibling — like it or not, the NX2000′s grip is gone — but it has the larger (DSLR-sized) 20.3-megapixel sensor, mode dial and hot shoe (with bundled flash) of the NX300. This mid-range camera even straddles the line when it comes to lenses, as one variant includes a 16-50mm stabilized power zoom lens that’s shorter than the 18-55mm kit optics from heftier NX models.

As with Samsung’s other 2014 mirrorless cams, you can expect NFC pairing with mobile devices, WiFi image transfers and party tricks like the selfie-oriented Wink Shot. You’re still giving up some features over the NX300, though. The NX3000 carries the mini’s basic 480 x 320 flip-up display and microSD storage, and you’re stuck with the slowest max shutter speed of the current lineup — at 1/4,000th of a second, this may not be the best choice for action photography. It may, however, be a good choice if you’re cost-conscious. The NX3000 will start at $479 (with a regular 20-50mm lens) when it ships to the US on June 1st, and the power zoom kit will cost only a bit more at $529.

Get the best phones of 2013 for a penny on Amazon

LG-G2-vs.-Galaxy-S4-Moto-X-HTC-One-on-paper

Technology is great.  Every year devices get stronger and more powerful.  To me, last year was a breakthrough year in regards for smartphone development because we had finally reached a point where we had enough RAM and processing power to run most apps seemingly effortlessly.

In 2013, the potential customer had to pick their potential phone based on things other than specs (i.e. build quality, camera, screen size, etc.). These Flagships from last year can still compete with the best phones of today.

Because last generations big name phones still perform superbly, I have no problem recommending any them to those inquiring about which phone to purchase.

With that being said, I am again making that recommendation as Amazon has last year’s flagships on sale for 1 red cent with a 2-year contract.

Whether its the fit and finish of the HTC One (M7), the endless features of the Samsung Galaxy S4, or the battery life of the LG G2, there is a smartphone here to fit your needs.

So go ahead, don’t be nervous about buying one of these phones as they still perform spectacularly and will be relevant for some time to come. For a penny you can’t go wrong.

Samsung replaces its mobile design chief

It might have been defiantly plastic, but the Galaxy S5′s lukewarm critical reception has apparently stimulated change at the higher levels of Samsung. Chang Dong-hoon, formerly Head of Mobile Design, tendered his resignation last week, and will be replaced by his VP, Lee Min-hyouk. According to Reuters, Lee was heavily involved in designing the Galaxy smartphone series. It’s speculation as to how this will affect Samsung’s future smart devices: judging on past form, we are likely to see the Note 3′s successor this summer. And what about those rumors of a premium-made Galaxy S5? And we don’t simply mean a coating of Swarovski.
