KitKat details leaked for multiple Samsung smartphones

kitkat-Update-status-leak

Samsung expects to deliver Android 4.4 KitKat updates to around eight smartphones before June is out, says SamMobile. According to the blog’s sources, a number of devices have already been cleared to roll with a handful of others still in “testing”. Between May and June we should see models such as the Galaxy Mega 5.8, Galaxy Note 3 Neo, and Galaxy S4 Mini picking up the update. Keep in mind this is for very specific model numbers and variants could be a few more weeks off.

One model not getting KitKat, according to SamMobile, is the international Galaxy S3. As to why, the site suggests it’s related to having 1GB RAM while everything else has 2GB. For what it’s worth, the LTE and U.S. versions have 2GB.

On the horizon, reportedly, is an Android 4.4.3 update for the Galaxy S5. It sounds as if Samsung may skip the 4.4.2 stuff and go right for the latest and greatest.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Dx (Mini) makes an appearance in multiple Colors

The trend of manufactures seems to be aimed at taking a flagship device, making a bigger brother and a smaller brother. Sony has the Z2 and Z2 Compact, the Galaxy S4 had a mini and there have been talks of a S5 mini and HTC One M8 mini too. Obviously the mini aspect is to bring some of the great features of the flagship device and dial them back a little and offer it at a lower price point. We have been suspicious, basically known, that Samsung was working on a smaller brother for the galaxy S5. Seems like our old pal, @Evleaks, has acquired an image showing a little bit regarding he device.

Samsung Galaxy S5 MiniThe image pretty clearly shows a series of Galaxy S5 devices with a label of “Dx” in the left hand side. The color options show off grey, blue, white, yellow/gold and a lime green. it is also missing the heart monitor found of the flagship version. You will also notice the Gear Fit and Gear 2 in the image, so I imagine that Samsung will be pairing them up with a promo price tag. We can only hope that this “mini” or “dx” version won’t take a huge cut in internal specs. A smaller screen would be fine, and even if they opted out of the waterproof side of things to cut costs back would be ok with me. The rumored specs talked of a 8MP camera, 16GB internal storage, a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen at 1280 x 720, a Qualcomm Snapdragon Processor and 1.5GB of RAM.

Any thoughts to be had about the Galaxy S5 Dx, or is it to early to really make a judgment.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime could be offered in limited quanities

Glam_Gear-Fit,-Galaxy-S5-Blue_01

According to Korean sources, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime could be offered in a limited supply given the high cost manufacturing the product.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime could be launched with a QHD display which would warrant the ‘Prime’ tagline for the updated device, and also stand as a significant differentiator from the recently launched Galaxy S5.

By limiting production costs by restricting supplies could mean Samsung could market the GS5 Prime as a premium limited supply device, thus increasing the desirability of it.

Could this spin save all the Galaxy S5 customers from feeling hard done by for Samsung releasing an update to the device so shortly after release?

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD display rumoured to arrive in June to counter LG G3 Release

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD displayWe’ve suspected for some time now that Samsung will be bringing out a slightly updated version of its Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone with a higher resolution screen and slightly updated hardware specs. This so-called Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime with Quad HD display is rumoured to be Samsung’s answer to the LG G3 which is expected to be announced as soon as LG’s event on May 27th, and will include the elusive 2K resolution display that was absent from the Galaxy S5 that launched in early April.

While we had almost believed that Samsung had perhaps sensibly decided that 1080p displays are as detailed as smartphone screens need to be, the reason, according to the Korea Herald, is actually that Samsung found that producing AMOLED displays with 2560×1440 pixels in large enough quantities to meet the demand for the global launch for the Galaxy S5 was just too expensive. To counter this supply issue, Samsung resolved to release a second device, this Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, at higher cost and with the 2K resolution display which would undoubtably sell fewer devices than the flagship Galaxy S5. Whether the rest of the hardware in this Galxy S5 Prime would be different from the original remains to be seen, but we may find out sooner than later with June just around the corner.

What do you think about a 2K device like the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime? Would you get this over the original Galaxy S5? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Samsung prepping Galaxy Tab S line with 2560×1600 AMOLED Screens?

I personally like Samsung and what they do. I might not be a huge fan of the TouchWiz / Magazine UI or how device locked the Gear watches are, but the fact that they offer a plethora of device options at variable price tags is rather nice. In the tablet line there are the more prolific Galaxy NotePRO. Along with the TabPRO and the lesser expensive Galaxy Tab 4 line. Now a new set of details is emerging that hints toward a Galaxy Tab S family of AMOLED display sporting tablets.

The report comes in from SamMobile and offers up that Samsung has a pair of tablets, one 8.4-inch and the other a 10.5-inch, with screen resolutions hitting 2560 x 1600. Both of which are using AMOLED displays too. Talks get a little bit better even with the other leaked details suggesting a Exynos 5 Octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, 8 MP camera on the rear and a 2.1 MP camera on the front. Toss in Wi-Fi 802.11ac along with the more known a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0 LE / ANT+, GPS, GLONASS and an IR Blaster.

It would be stupid of Samsung to release this on anything less than Android 4.4.2 KitKat, which is exactly what the information details out. Not to mention the newer Magazine style UI that we saw on the NotePRO.

Samsung Galaxy Tab SThe insider is stating that that there will be 4 models of the device available. Standard Wi-Fi only models of each size along with an LTE counter part. Perhaps the better news is that the LTE models are said to retain the Exynos 5 (5420) chip this time around and not be forced to switch to Qualcomm to give the LTE radio coverage. The only thing that didn’t get mentioned was internal storage, but a screenshot sent it offered up internal storage numbers of 10.65GB. We suspect 16GB and 32GB offerings with micro SD card support surely.

I was pretty impressed with the NotePRO when I saw it, but this new Galaxy Tab S line is sounding a bit more interesting to someone like me who doesn’t need the fancy S-Pen. Now if they can make it affordable.  What are your guys thoughts?

Samsung’s Galaxy S5 now comes in a tweaker-friendly Verizon model

Samsung Galaxy S5 hands-on at MWC 2014

Fancy a Galaxy S5 on Verizon, but still want the freedom of tweaking your smartphone to your heart’s content? Today’s your lucky day. Samsung has just released a Developer Edition of the Android smartphone that’s built for Big Red’s network. The device is largely identical to what you’d find in the local carrier store, including branding. You’re just getting an unlocked bootloader that will make it easier to install unofficial firmware. This special GS5 is also expensive at $599 contract-free, but that’s what you’d shell out for the regular Verizon model on similar terms — if you’re already willing to pay full price, you might as well get more control over the device you buy.

Early details leak for Samsung GALAXY Tab S

samsung_logo_720

Hey, look! Samsung has yet another new line of products to unveil, or so says SamMobile. This time we’re looking at what’s being billed as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S.

Specifications obtained by the blog suggest the tablet could come in on the higher end of things. Details are said to include an AMOLED display at 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution and a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa (quad-core 1.9GHz Cortex-A15 with a quad-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A7) processor. Other features listed are an 8-megapixel rear camera, 3GB RAM, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and a fingerprint scanner.

Samsung will also be introducing a new feature, which will be unique to the Galaxy Tab S, it’s called Multi-User login. This feature uses Android’s native multi-user functionality but enhances it further by allowing the user to log in to his/her account simply by swiping a finger on the home button from the lock screen.

In terms of displays, it appears the Galaxy Tab S could be offered in 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch sizes. Colors include Shimmer White and Titanium Grey; 4G LTE and Wi-Fi versions are expected.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4-inch Wi-Fi (SM-T700)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4-inch LTE (SM-T705)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5-inch Wi-Fi (SM-T800)
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5-inch LTE (SM-T805)

C Spire intros competitive shared plans

c_spire_logo

C Spire Wireless on Monday announced new shared plans that offer competitive pricing as compared to its larger competitors. Available immediately, customers who bring four lines of service can take advantage of the new, $160 plan which breaks down to $40 per line. What do you get for the money? Each line of service receives unlimited voice, text, and access to a pool of 10GB shared data.

c_spire_shared_data_plans

For those who don’t have need for four lines of service or want that much data, there are 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB plans as well. Should customers find themselves going over the allotted data pools speeds will be throttled.

In addition to the multi-line shared plans, the company also introduced new pricing for smaller allocations of data, which are now just $25 for 1 GB or $40 for 2 GBs of data, a savings of $20 a month for each option. In addition, the company added a new 3 GB option for $60 a month.

Today also sees C Spire Wireless begin offering pre-orders for the  Samsung Galaxy S5. Pricing for the handset is listed at $199.99 with a two-year service agreement. Availability is expected “later this month.”
