The 7-inch Samsung Galaxy W is officially launched in Korea for 499,400 Won

Samsung Galaxy WLooks like we didn’t have long to wait before Samsung announced the 7-inch Galaxy Mega device that leaked out a few days ago. That mysterious device has been launched today in Samsung’s native Korea as the Samsung Galaxy W, a 7-inch behemoth that aims to marry phone-like abilities with tablet-type functionalities. As was suspected, the Galaxy W is going to have a 1.2GHz processor, 1.5GB RAM and a 720p display resolution, however  we now know that it will also come with 16GB storage, a 2MP front facing camera and a 8MP rear camera. And despite being what Android purists would say is “slightly underpowered”, the Galaxy W is going to be able to take advantage of Korea’s LTE-A networks for blistering mobile data speeds.

Probably some contentious points on the spec sheet include a 3,200mAh battery, which could struggle to give decent battery life when coupled with LTE-A access and that 7-inch display. Possibly also disappointing is the fact that the Galaxy W apparently only comes with Android 4.3, especially considering that Samsung devices are already starting to get Android 4.4. So far, only availability in Korea has been announced for 499,400 won (or $488 USD), however the device has already received FCC approval so it’s only a matter of time before we see the device as the Samsung Galaxy Mega elsewhere.

It’s definitely an intriguing idea as Samsung clearly wants to differentiate this device as a smartphone device rather than a tablet. Would you consider the Samsung Galaxy W when it comes to your region? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Samsung breaks from Android with its first Tizen phone

Samsung has been teasing a Tizen-based prototype phones for quite awhile now, but it has finally launched an honest-to-God smartphone with the OS: the Samsung Z. Tizen is Samsung’s attempt at a homegrown OS (first featured on its Galaxy Gear smartwatch), though it developed the software jointly with Intel. The Samsung Z will feature a 720P HD, AMOLED display with a quad-core, 2.3GHz CPU (from Intel we presume) with 2GB RAM, 16GB memory, an 8GB camera, a heartrate sensor and fingerprint scanner. Expect to see the same design language featured in its Android-based Galaxy S devices, especially in the app drawer, notification tray and homescreen widgets. Samsung has also promised a “slim, angular design,” and will launch it in black and gold on June 3rd at its Tizen developer conference in San Francisco. It’ll be available in Russia and other markets shortly thereafter — expect more details (like the price) soon.

Samsung’s 7-inch Galaxy W blurs the line between phones and tablets

Samsung's Galaxy W 7-inch phone and tablet hybrid

If you thought that big devices like the Galaxy Mega 6.3 were already blurring the distinctions between phones and tablets, hold on to your hat — Samsung has just erased those distinctions altogether. Its new Galaxy W (not to be confused with the 2011-era W) blends the 7-inch screen of a small tablet with a relatively compact design that lets you hold it one-handed for phone calls. This isn’t the first crossover we’ve seen by any means, but it promises to be more comfortable than truly finger-straining rivals like ASUS’ Fonepad 7 or HP’s 7-inch VoiceTab.

As with the Mega, this isn’t the flagship you might expect given the gigantic dimensions. You’ll be making do with a 720p display, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 16GB of expandable storage, a 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front cam. The W is even stuck on Android 4.3 rather than 4.4. It won’t be the cheapest device, either, as it’s selling for 499,400 won ($489) off-contract in its native Korea — Samsung is no doubt expecting customers to treat this as a two-in-one purchase. There’s no mention of an American launch, but you shouldn’t count on one when US carriers have so far been skittish about offering category-defying hardware.

[Thanks, Phil]

Download booster and Kids mode reach T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3

samsung kids mode____

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 on T-Mobile USA’s got its Android KitKat update back in March. This time around it’s getting an additional update carrying some of Samsung Galaxy S5′s features.

N900TUVUDNE6 is the software version of this update. Download booster and Kids mode are the features that are coming with this update. Download booster will allow you to use wi-fi and 3G/4G at the same time in order to give you higher internet speeds, it only works for large (30+MB) files and native apps though. Kids mode on the other hand will come in handy if you have small children messing around with the device, this mode completely changes the UI look when it’s on and of course limits certain functions to make the device kid-friendly.

The update is available as we speak. Did you wait for this update to go live?

Leaked image shows gigantic 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega 2

galaxy mega 2 (7.0)

Huge phones aren’t foreign territory for Samsung, far from it. They basically started the phablet game with the Note line and a year ago they released their Galaxy Mega devices. One fo them sporting a 5.8″ screen and other 6.3″, which is almost tablet territory.

Many thought that Samsung has reached the line and won’t step over it, but those people were wrong. Earlier this month a mysterious Galaxy W (Mega successor) device leaked sporting a 7″ screen and that device was not dubbed a tablet. Sure, that seemed rather odd, but if someone was going to do it it’s Samsung.

That huge device (Mega 2 from now on) was cleared by USA’s FCC yesterday and today it leaks in some images. There aren’t any additional leaked specifications at this time, but if an earlier leak is to be believed the device will sport a 720p screen, a 1.2GHz quad-core chip, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of storage (+microSD card) and a 8MP camera. All that should be operated by an Android 4.3 JellyBean OS.

There aren’t any release date information at this time, but Samsung is going to hold a press even on June 12. Galaxy Tab S lineup will probably get announced there but that doesn’t mean Galaxy Mega 2 will not make an appearance.

Would you ever buy a phone with a 7″ display?

The 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega device is pushing the limits of the phablet Label

7-inch Samsung Galaxy MegaSmartphones as a group of devices have slowly been increasing in size ever since they graduated to touch screen displays, so much so that the line between phones and tablets were blurred. The term “phablet” was invented for these devices, with the capabilities of a phone, but much too large for some to be comfortable with. The largest phablet so far that I can think of is the Sony Xperia Z Ultra which topped out at 6.4-inches, however it looks like Samsung is going to trump that by more than half an inch. A 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega device, which could go by either Galaxy Mega 2, Galaxy Mega 7.0 or even Galaxy W, has recently been spotted after being shown off by a case maker.

While the screen size is definitely not anything we’ve seen on a smartphone or phablet, you can see that the design of the device is definitely closer to Samsung’s smartphone devices. As with the Galaxy Mega devices last year, this 7-inch Galaxy Mega device isn’t anything to write home about hardware-wise; it allegedly has a quad core Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB RAM and 8GB storage. And despite the display being a monstrous 7 inches, the resolution will only be 720p. The device has already gotten approval at the FCC which means it is at least going to be launched in the U.S. and, from the looks of the leaked image above, China as well.

What do you think about a 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega? Is it going a bit far with the screen size? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Samsung trademarks ‘Galaxy Wear’

galaxy-wear-trademark

galaxy-wear-trademark

It looked like Samsung were done with Android powered smartwatches after they announced that their very own Tizen would be OS of choice from now on, but it seems they could still be in the game for Android wearables after a recent trademark filing was made by the company.

Samsung had mentioned in previous briefings that a future smartwatch manufactured by them would be powered by Google’s Android Wear platform and now the company filed for the name “Galaxy Wear” at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, it certainly sounds like we could see a Android wearable device once again.

We can only surmise that they plan to release an Android wear device as no details have been confirmed that any such thing is in development but as we know, Samsung don’t like to late to the party and it wont want to miss this one.

Galaxy Tab S 10.5 leaks on images ahead of launch

galaxy tab s 10.5____

June 12 is the date when Samsung is expected to announce their Galaxy Tab S lineup. First the Galaxy Tab S 10.5 leaked and not long after that the 8.4 version did the same.

This new set of leaked images, courtesy of @evleaks, look pretty convincing and quite frankly official. One (if not both) of these tablets are expected to sport a 2560×1600 AMOLED screen, after Samsung had a brief fling with LCD panels in their Galaxy TabPRO and NotePRO tablets. Other than the screen an 8MP camera is expected as well as Magazine UX UI and Android 4.4 KitKat.

We should know more on June 12. Although there’s a June 19 date mentioned on one of the renders, could this be the date of the launch or is it just a coincidence? We’ll find out soon. Do you plan to get either of these devices?

Leak hints the Galaxy S5 Mini will keep its bigger sibling’s sensors

The rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini

While many have been expecting Samsung to launch a mini version of the Galaxy S5 given the company’s past habits, there have been questions about just what the smartphone would include. Would it be as hobbled as last year’s S4 Mini? Maybe not. SamMobile has received photos of a purported Galaxy S5 Mini which hint that this smaller device could include the fingerprint and heart rate sensors of its full-size sibling, as well as the water-resistant shell. Not surprisingly, it would also share the Ultra Power Saving mode and other software tricks.

The snapshots don’t reveal what’s inside, but their source claims that the hardware won’t be quite as much of a downgrade as in previous years. You could see a 4.5-inch, 720p AMOLED display along with a budget-minded 1.4GHz quad-core processor; there should also be a decent 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter and 16GB of expandable storage. The tip doesn’t include a release date, but it’s coming hot on the heels of the Galaxy S5 Active launch — it’s easy to see the Mini arriving relatively soon.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 press renders leak out, show a perforated Back

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5Samsung has had a number of tablet devices of the Galaxy Tab S line rumoured to be announced at their event on the 12th of June. Today we get the best look yet of one of those devices, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, in some press renders leaked out by leak extraordinare, @evleaks. The Galaxy Tab S 10.5, which is expected to be launched with a smaller Galaxy Tab S 8.4 variant, is rumoured to have a 10.5-inch 2560×1600 AMOLED display, the first on a tablet from Samsung since 2011.

Powering that monstrous display is said to be the octacore Exynos 5420, 3GB RAM and a fingerprint sensor much like the one on the Samsung Galaxy S5. That isn’t the only similarity these Tab S tablets are expected to have with Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone; from the press renders, it looks like the Tab S 10.5 will have a perforated finish on the rear of the device like the Galaxy S5, and presumably the Tab S 8.4 will also have the same.
