HTC Desire 626 launching in Taiwan, competitively priced and spec’d to the Moto G

HTC is no stranger to the mid-range segment, creating some of the most attractive and premium looking devices in the category. When it comes to specs however, HTC tends to leave something to be desired, at least when it comes to display resolution. Thankfully, their latest mid-ranger brings us a true Moto G competitor in every way that counts.
The Desire 826 comes in either white or dark blue and is powered by a 1.2GHz 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor and backed by 1GB RAM. There’s also 16GB storage with microSD, a 13MP rear camera, a 5MP frnt cam, a 2000 mAh battery and LTE support. The OS appears to be KitKat with Sense on top from what we gather, though hopefully a Lollipop update is coming sooner rather than later.
With the Desire 826 we get a 5-inch 720p display, putting it right on par with the Moto G (2nd gen)
One area we’ve yet to mention is the display, and that’s because it’s worth focusing on by itself. While we’ve seen plenty of Desire phones rock the above specs, most of the time we get quarter HD (or even lower) resolutions. With the Desire 826 we get a 5-inch 720p display, putting it right on par with the Moto G (2nd gen) but also giving it the advantage of LTE, what appears to be a better camera, and HTC’s arguably more attractive aesthetics.
Okay, but in order to really compete with the Moto G, the HTC Desire 826 will need to be priced aggressively, too. Here’s where things get a bit more complicated, as the phone does in fact cost around the same as the Moto G at $190 (NT$5990), but it currently is only launching in Taiwan. It’s unclear if or when the device will hit western markets, and even if it does, there’s no guarantees that it’s pricing will be as aggressive.
Providing HTC is able to launch around this price and comes to Europe and North America, would you consider picking up the Desire 826 over other budget devices like the Moto G? Let us know what you think in the comments.
HTC launches Desire 626 in Taiwan
HTC has today announced that its latest mid-range smartphone, the Desire 626, is now available in Taiwan. The handset is available in two colorways — dark blue and white — and will set you back just $190 (NT$5990).
Enclosed in the plastic casing, you’ll find a 5-inch HD display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, a 1.7GHz octa-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, an Adreno 306 GPU, 16GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2,000mAh battery.
The Desire 626 will run the latest build of Android 5.0 Lollipop with HTC’s Sense 5.0 user interface straight out of the box, and will come with support for dual-SIM as well as 4G connectivity for LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 28.

How did the Grammy Awards miss this hit from HTC CEO Peter Chou and chairwoman Cher Wang?
HTC had their end of the year party as they usually do around the Chinese New Year (February 19). We usually get some interesting things out of it like the time they officially announced the “M7″ name of the original HTC One. However this year takes it up a notch.
CEO Peter Chou and chairwoman Cher Wang took the stage for a little diddy called “We Are One,” which is about HTC’s personality. Chou even strapped on a guitar. So while you were watching the Grammy Awards last night with all those amazing performances (from some you may have never heard of), you missed this very special “one” indeed.
Video is after the break and we definitely want to hear your comments!!

Android Authority this week

With MWC looming, more leaks and rumors about the stars of the show are emerging. This week, we learned more details about the HTC One (M9) and the Galaxy S6/S Edge. Manufacturers and carriers pushed Lollipop updates to several devices, but the most interesting Lollipop news was a total surprise: Android 5.1 was spotted running on Android One devices shipped in Indonesia, and with no official word from Google, speculation is heating up. Finally, the first Lollipop-based Paranoid Android ROM has arrived this week.

Cyanogenmod 12 finally released for the Nexus 9
The wait for Cyanogenmod 12 is finally over for HTC’s flagship Nexus 9 tablet. The first nightly build for the tab is available on CM’s download page, and getting it flashed to your device isn’t too much of a hassle, considering this a Nexus tablet.
Cyanogenmod 12 is built from Lollipop’s source code, so you fortunately won’t have to abandon any features here. The first builds are going to be nightly builds, though, so there may be a few bugs here and there.
If you want to get started, hit the link below to grab the download.

T-Mobile HTC One (M8) getting Android 5.0 Lollipop this Monday, February 9
Owners of the HTC One (M8) on T-Mobile have something to get excited about this weekend. Android 5.0 Lollipop will start pushing to the device starting this Monday, February 9th.
This news comes from Mo Versi who Tweeted that the update has received technical approval.
Sprint already started pushing the update to their branded One (M8) today, so we can only assume that AT&T and Verizon won’t be too far behind.

HTC closes last year’s final quarter with small profit, still maintains growth
While HTC did finish the final quarter of 2014 with a profit, the amount was not very much. The company published its Q4 2014 report this morning and it shows that HTC generated $1.5 billion in revenue before retaining just $15.9 million. It did prove to be HTC’s third consecutive quarter with a profit, so things are starting to look up for the Taiwanese company. And year-on-year growth for revenue was up 12%.
The following is what CEO Peter Chou had to say regarding the performance:
HTC finished the year with a third consecutive quarter of profitability, and is well-positioned to build on that solid platform in the year ahead by ensuring our portfolio is highly targeted and our message clearly communicated. Key to our improved performance was our ability to offer tailored product mixes at suitable price points within the regions, which enabled us to closely address the needs of specific markets.
Last year was certainly a step forward for HTC. Three critically acclaimed devices launched throughout the year: HTC One (M8), HTC Desire EYE, and RE Camera. Rather than flooding the market with devices, HTC has decided to target specific consumers. The One (M8) was the flagship handset for a bigger audience. The Desire EYE was targeted for a crowd that has an interest in photography/selfies. The RE Camera was a versatile tool for snapping photos and recording videos. In its report, HTC says that they embarked on a strategy in the quarter to extend its reach in mobile lifestyle.

HTC expects a solid first quarter, but the One M9 may not make a difference

Following a good end of the year, HTC hopes 2015 will continue on an upward trajectory.
For Q4 2014, HTC posted a small profit, as well as the first quarterly increase in revenues in three years. The growing revenue is especially important because it means that HTC has managed to sell more devices (or increase the average selling price of its phones) compared to the previous quarter. While HTC remained profitable throughout most of the year, staying in the black was thanks to slashing costs, rather than increasing revenues.
Today HTC published consolidated results for Q4 2014, showing small differences from the preliminary figures published on January 6. Quarterly revenue was NT$47.9 billion, while net profit was NT$0.5 billion.
What’s more interesting is HTC’s outlook for Q1 2015. Peter Chou’s company is forecasting between NT$41.5 billion and NT$45 billion ($1.32 billion and $1.43 billion) in revenue, a decrease compared to Q4 2014, but roughly 30 percent more than the same quarter in 2014.
Most electronics companies go through a lull in the first quarter of the year compared to the holiday quarter, but the fact that HTC expects a slowdown suggests the M9 won’t be available for enough time in Q1 to make an impact on revenue. The device will be introduced at the beginning of March (last month of Q1), but it may be weeks before the device becomes widely available.
All in all, HTC appears to be on a good path, but a lot depends on what the company will show us on March 1. Samsung has a lot weighing on the success of the Galaxy S6, due the same day, and it will be fun to see these two major players trying to one-up each other.
Sprint updating the HTC One (M8) and LG G3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop next week
Sprint is on fire when it comes to updating devices to Lollipop. If the HTC One (M7) and the Galaxy S 5 wasn’t enough, how about the HTC One (M8) and the LG G3? A leaked document shows that the HTC One (M8) will get Android 5.0 Lollipop on February 13 and the LG G3 will get the tasty treat on February 16. If you happen to own the Harman Kardon edition of the One (M8), don’t fret, because it’s included in the update as well.
Of course, it should be noted that “subject to change” is listed so if anything goes wrong with the final testing, Sprint will delay the launch. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
