Judge validates 2 out of 5 patents in haptic feedback suit against HTC

HTC Logo

For those unaware, HTC has been going through some legal troubles for the past few years. Back in 2012, a company called Immersion that’s popular for its touch feed back technology (or haptic feedback), sued HTC and Motorola for infringing on six of Immersion’s patents. The Motorola case eventually fizzled out after Google bought Motorola and agreed to pay Immersion a settlement. That left HTC to deal with the lawsuit on their own. Fast forward to today, and we’re getting closer to a ruling on the lawsuit.

The district court judge assigned to the case has ruled to go forward with litigation over two of the patents, and dismissed the other three. Victor Viegas, CEO and president of Immersion, commented on the ruling after all was said and done:

We are pleased with the Court’s decision to rule in our favor with respect to two of our strongest patents in suit. While it is always expected that certain patent claims will be trimmed during the course of litigation we are disappointed in the judge’s procedural interpretation, believe we have a strong basis for overturning it, and are considering appropriate avenues for relief. In light of this ruling, we remain extremely confident in our case and look forward to the upcoming trial.

According to Immersion, all is obviously not said and done with the case. They’ll do whatever they can to appeal the judge’s decision in hopes to overturn the patent ruling. Now, the case will go to court and decide whether or not HTC has infringed on the two patents the judge validated.

HTC Zoe updated for Lollipop with new highlight engine

htc_zoe_app_icon

HTC has released an update to the HTC Zoe highlights video app. Like so many apps getting updated now, the big visual change users will notice is the support for Android Lollipop and Google’s Material Design. As part of that support, HTC added in support for the Nexus 6 smartphone and the Nexus 9 tablet.

HTC took the opportunity to slide in a brand new highlight engine at the heart of the app. According to HTC, the new highlight engine enables new themes, new effects and transitions, and higher quality video. HTC also makes it possible to download and save Zoes to your device instead of everything living in the cloud.

HTC indicates they have revamped the Discovery Feed to help users find local content. As usual, the app updates also included performance enhancements and stability fixes. You can get HTC Zoe by using one of the Google Play download links below.

HTC should hire the designer of these M9 renders

HTC One M9 render (1)

If you’re a phone geek, phones are inherently sexy. Well, most of them are. For the rest of the world, some coaxing is required. Press shots and promotional images play a big role in this, which is why companies hire armies of photographers, graphic designers, and 3D artists to make sure their products look at their absolute best.

Enter Jonas Daehnert, an industrial designer based in Germany, who runs a design firm called PhoneDesigner. Jonas took all the information that’s currently available on the One (M9) and created this set of beautiful renders. The stock Android screen simulation is definitely off, but on the hardware side, what you see in these high-quality renders should be pretty close to the real thing.

This work is definitely impressive – Jonas took a set of inconsistent blurry cam shots and turned them into some very convincing images. They get your pulse racing, so to speak, especially if you’re an HTC fan. So, HTC or anyone else looking for talented industrial designers, maybe check this guy out?

We’ll only find out how accurate these luscious renders are on March 1. Meanwhile, would you be interested in the M9 if it ends up looking like this?

Image leaks of unknown HTC smartphone

HTC_Phone_Leak_Unknown_021115

While browsing my Twitter feed this morning, an image of some sort of HTC device popped up. It appears to be a smartphone as you can see the BoomSound speaker, but it’s probably not the upcoming One (M9). From what we know about the One (M9), it will sport much lower profile BoomSound speakers, so what is this mysterious device?

The next bet would have to be a Desire phone, but even the newer devices aren’t sporting this type of speaker grill. However, we do know that a new Desire could get announced at MWC.

Even the leaker doesn’t know what the device is. Any guesses?

HTC to unveil “Petra” smartwatch at the MWC 2015

HTC_Desire_Eye_Back_HTC_Logo_TA

A new report from renowned leakster Upleaks claims that HTC is looking to finally enter the smartwatch segment with a new wearable known as the “Petra“. It is said that this wearable will run a custom HTC developed operating system called RTOS instead of Google’s Android Wear platform. This means the wearable will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices at the time of launch.

The Petra will reportedly feature a 1.8 inch 32 x 160 resolution display, IP57 certification for water and dust resistance, more than 3 days of battery life and support for GPS. The smartwatch will weigh only 23 grams apparently, which is feather light for a wearable.

The launch is expected to take place by Q1 2015 so it should be shown off during HTC’s One M9 launch event on the 1st of March. The Petra will reportedly break cover in the U.S. first and is said to be available in Teal/Lime and Black/Blue Gray color variants.

HTC One (M8) for T-Mobile to get Lollipop on February 10

t-mobile_htc_one_m8_update_021015_screengrab

The HTC One (M8) for T-Mobile was originally scheduled to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop in a software update sometime today. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be happening as there is an hour left in the day (on the east coast) and no such update has arrived. On T-Mobile’s support page for the HTC handset, February 10 is listed as the new date for Lollipop to start rolling out. The software update will be labeled as build 4.20.531.4 and the start of the roll out is tomorrow; therefore, it may take a few days for the update to reach all device owners.

Let us know in the comments when you receive the update.

OtterBox cases for upcoming HTC One (M9) surface

htc_one_m9_otterbox_cases_020915_leak

To get an idea as to what the design of an upcoming device will be, accessories are always useful. For some reason, the mobile accessory manufacturers have no problem introducing products before the corresponding device is even announced. Here we have cases from OtterBox that will be paired with the upcoming HTC One (M9). OtterBox will have both Commuter and Defender cases for it with color options being Black or Glacier. As seen in the image above, the Duo Camera setup is gone. Other than that, these cases do not expose very much about the flagship-to-be from HTC.

HTC is working on its own tablet based on the Nexus 9

Nexus_9_LTE

According to renowned leaker, @Upleaks, HTC is currently in the throes of developing its own branded tablet, that’s rumored to be based heavily on the design of the Nexus 9 which it developed for Google back in October, 2014.

The slate is expected to have similar dimensions to the Nexus, meaning it will keep its gorgeous 1536 x 2048 9-inch display, probably with the same 4:3 aspect ratio, too. However, it will differ with regards to hardware specifications.

It doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing HTC’s latest offering anytime soon as it’s not expected to arrive in Q1 of 2015, which means we could be looking at either a Q2 or Q3 launch, seeing as the company tends not to launch new devices in the fourth quarter.
