What we expect: HTC ‘M8′ One+

As one of the most rumored and anticipated devices of the year, the successor to the HTC One is expected to show up at some time in the next few months.  That is, an announcement is at least rumored for late February or March.

HTC, for its part, has done a decent job of keeping things under wraps for the so-called “HTC One 2″ but flagship models often feature their share of leaks. Rumors have been circulating for more than a few months as to what we might expect for the company’s 2014 premier model and are likely to continue up to the very moment of announcement.

We’ve taken this opportunity to gather up some of the juiciest and most likely rumors and put them in one place.  What you’ll find below is a growing list of things we expect or feel strongly about as it pertains to the HTC One 2.

If you see something that doesn’t look right or something we may have missed, let us know! We will update this post as we learn more about the HTC smartphone.

The Name

As to be expected when you deal with a smartphone called the “HTC One” thus far it’s been quite difficult to pin down the successor’s name. With that said, some that have been tossed about the rumor mill include HTC One 2, HTC One+, and HTC One (2014 Edition).

Specifications

Chatter suggests that the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and feature 2GB RAM, an dual-sensor UltraPixel camera, and 2,900mAh battery. Like the HTC One Max, this one has been leaked as having a fingerprint scanner.

In terms of the display, we’ve been hearing something in the ballpark of 5-inches to 5.2-inches. While some companies are pushing into the 2K (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution, this one will likely have the more popular 1920 x 1080 pixel display. Reports indicate that HTC has been able to slim the bezel down and increase the screen size without making for a larger overall form factor.

Android and UI

We should expect Android 4.4 KitKat at the minimum, perhaps something as new as the 4.4.2 version. In terms of HTC’s custom Sense UI, we are told to look for a 6.0 release for the handset.

Launch

Different launch dates have been tossed around with most centering around Mobile World Congress. Most recently, however, details surfaced which suggest the HTC flagship could debut at a standalone event in late March. If correct, we could see the device unveiled at New York press conference. The predecessor was introduced at a February event which took place in New York and London; retail arrival, however, was another month away.

Carrier support

We fully expect to see HTC release the smartphone across all major carriers around the world. As for the United States, we anticipate the big providers getting their respective models at or around the same time.

Anything else?

The HTC handset may debut with up to four color options however some may be carrier or regional exclusives. What’s more, we could ultimately see some new colors rolled out over time, perhaps with retailers like Best Buy.

Differing from HTC devices of the past, navigation will likely come in the form of on-screen buttons.

HTC M8 Looking to Launch Late March and will Look Very Similar to the HTC One [Rumor]

HTC M8 concept

When it comes to rumors or actual information regarding the HTC M8, evleaks is the name to follow. He has already given us a lot of info about the HTC M8, and now he has given us possible period of time of its release, as well as his description of what the phone looks like.

End of March may by the period of time the HTC M8 will be unveiled and launched, but then he had something interesting to say about how the phone looks.

Makes sense. The HTC One is a beautifully designed phone, which a lot of tech sites would vouch for. It isn’t shocking to me that it won’t strive away from that gorgeous design, I just find it funny how he talks about HTC already using the name HTC One S. I’m guessing that maybe the slight tweaks in design don’t compliment the phone to make it look like a hardcore successor to the HTC One, but as long as it still has that sexy design with BoomSound, and some powerful parts underneath the hood, everything should be okay. Let us know your thoughts about what he said.

HTC Desire 310 to have Stock Android UI with BlinkFeed Built-In

htc-desire-310-stock-android

Last week, we got our first look at a new HTC device that was rumored to be a new HTC Desire. Rumored specs included an Mediatek octa-core processor, but other details were scarce. Today we are getting some new information about this HTC Desire “310″, and some of you will be on board what information has come about.

According to miyachiki on Weibo, the HTC Desire 310 will rock a stock Android UI, and will merge HTC’s BlinkFeed within the UI. If many of you are like me, the words “stock Android UI” are glorious words to read, and even though a lot you out there might not be on board with BlinkFeed, I am sure they will give the option to turn it off.

Miyachiki shared those screenshots above which shows the stock Android UI dialer, as well as some of the icons we are used to seeing in stock Android. At first I thought they were phony because if you look at the on-screen buttons on the screenshots, two of them have the Nexus navbar buttons, while one of them has the new buttons we saw leaked out yesterday. Miyachiki claims that, that was due to the different stages the UI was going through as he took the screenshots. There was also mention that HTC isn’t actually developing the HTC Desire 310. Turns out it will be developed by Compal Comm, a Taiwanese ODM that is the second-largest contract laptop manufacturer in the world. Kind of doesn’t make sense, but hey, does anything with HTC?

So as soon as we find out more information about this phone, we will let you know. Tells us what you think about a stock Android UI running on a “kind of” HTC phone.

[LEAK] HTC M8 launch will apparently be in late March in New York City

HTC M8 launchAlmost daily leaks about HTC One’s successor, the HTC M8, have kept many of us salivating over what is yet to come, the latest leak suggesting that the M8 will have on-screen buttons instead of capacitive ones. One thing we haven’t had confirmed yet, apart from how the device actually looks, is the date for its announcement. Many pundits had been assuming the HTC M8 launch date would be similar to the One’s announcement at a U.K. event in mid-March. Not so, according to leak extrordinare, evleaks:

If what Mr evleaks is saying is correct, the announcement and presumed launch of the M8 will occur a little later than we expected and almost halfway around the world. This puts the launch around about a month after the expected launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5, and as far as replicating what happened last year, that’s not such a bad thing, particularly considering HTC‘s fortunes of late.

We really can’t wait to see more of HTC’s next flagship device, and something tells me that we’ll be seeing a lot more of it before the fateful and vague “late March” deadline rolls by. What are your thoughts about the HTC M8 so far: is it a device that you want to get? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Nikolai Prettner says: try this HTC M8 concept on for Size

HTC M8 conceptNot that we’re pretty confident that the HTC M8 is going to have on-screen buttons instead of capacitive buttons, it’s probably worth taking a look at some HTC M8 concepts to try and visualize it. The one in the image above comes to us courtesy of designer Nikolai Prettner who gives us is take on what he thinks the HTC One successor will look like.

The concept of course includes the use of on-screen buttons, though we’re unsure if HTC is going to go with solid-black buttons as suggested in today’s leak, or if they’re going to utilize the transparent bar provided in Android KitKat. Nevertheless, it’s nice to put a picture to the image that we’ve all been forming in our heads. The concept design looks like a pretty good guess at what the M8 will look like except for one key feature that we are quite certain will be present in the final product; that of course is the dual-sensor rear camera that has been suggested by multiple leaked cases for the device.

What do you think of this latest HTC M8 concept? Do you see anything missing or something extra you didn’t expect? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC M8 On-Screen Buttons Image Leaks Out

htc-m8-on-screen-buttons

We heard a week or so ago, that HTC’s new baby, the HTC M8, was going to be the first HTC device to not feature capacitive buttons. They were going to switch over to on-screen buttons like the Nexus 5, and many had some mixed feelings about it. Some people hated the fact, simply because that strip of real estate the buttons land on take up precious screen space. Others loved the idea because the capacitive buttons have suffered problems in the past with certain updates. Well now we get a good look on what those on-screen buttons are going to look like, and this is brought to us by HTC Source, who got an email with this image above.

htc-buttons-comparisson

They also mocked up a comparison image, comparing these on-screen buttons to other HTC phones with the capacitive buttons. I think a lot of us are glad to see that HTC is putting THREE buttons instead of the two they adopted with the first HTC One. That was always a pain that was solved by developers and their awesome ROMs and tweaks. Let us know your thoughts about the buttons, and if you are excited for the HTC M8.

[LEAK] Evleaks leaks the existence of the HTC M8 Mini

HTC m8 miniProlific leaker, evleaks, is often quite straightforward in his Twitter leaks, and although his latest tweet is decidedly cryptic, it seems to nevertheless confirm the existence of a HTC M8 Mini:

I think it’s safe to assume that the first four charaters before the device names are some kind of internal model number reference, but it’s definitely the first time that we’ve heard of a smaller HTC M8 device been mentioned. HTC attempted a similar feat last year with the HTC One Mini, but with disappointing hardware and an inflated price-tag, the One Mini failed to capitalize on the same hype created by its bigger brother, the HTC One.

One popular  theory is that the HTC M8 Mini will be released alongside the full-sized iteration of the HTC M8, which is expected to be soon, if not at MWC 2014 this month, while other suggest that the M8 Mini will be released shortly after the M8′s announcement. What do you think HTC is planning to do with the HTC M8 Mini? Do you think they should do something differently compared to last year’s strategy with the HTC One Mini? Let us know your 2 cents in the comments below.

HTC One for Sprint gets its KitKat update a little early

HTC One for Sprint

HTC must feel that it’s best to underpromise and overdeliver. While the company told American One owners that they wouldn’t get KitKat on time, the 535MB Android upgrade is already available on Sprint; eager subscribers just have to check for an update to start downloading. More patient types can wait until February 11th, when the carrier will begin pushing the OS to all users. There’s no word of an accelerated launch on other US networks, so Sprint customers may be sitting pretty for the next couple of weeks.

[Thanks, Mike]

US HTC One Misses Scheduled Android 4.4 KitKat Update

While the KitKat update process for the European HTC flagship has already initiated, US based owners will have to wait a little bit longer.

Carrier-banded handsets will not be receiving the update by the end of January, as previously promised by the company. Jason Mackenzie, President of HTC America, announced yesterday that the delay is due to carrier certification, which he hopes won’t take long. In fact he assumes that the whole procedure won’t last longer than a fortnight.

Props to HTC though for giving us some heads up instead of leaving us frustrated and wondering why our handset wasn’t seeded with the actual update.
