HTC: “We’ll miss our self-imposed Android 4.4 target”

HTC president (U.S.) Jason Mackenzie has penned a post on the company’s website advising that the hardware maker will miss its self-imposed target for Android 4.4 KitKat. Initially expected to arrive for the HTC One this week, it appears that the process could take another week or two before it hits the U.S. versions of the handset. As you likely guessed, the delay comes from the carrier certification aspect.

The challenge we gave our teams, in cooperation with our carrier partners, has taught us a lot that will allow us to improve on our upgrade delivery in the future.  We remain resolved to provide timely updates and to be transparent about the process and status of our efforts.  Supporting our customers is a major priority for us and we thank you for your support of HTC!

We have to give HTC credit for both imposing its own deadline as well as the transparency. There’s nothing worse than waiting without any clue as to what we should expect.

Read the full open letter at HTC’s website.

HTC to deliver KitKat to One owners a couple weeks late (updated)

HTC pledged to put KitKat on One handsets in the US 90 days after the newest version of Android’s release, but today, the company revealed that it’s going to miss its target date. While things looked to be on schedule as late as last week — when the company pushed the final software out to AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon — it appears that certification process is taking longer than expected (HTC One owners outside the US may experience a more timely rollout, namely in the Nordics, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Ukraine, Middle East and North Africa regions). There is a silver lining to be found, however. The delay should only last a week or two according to HTC Americas President Jason Mackenzie, and, of course you can keep an eye on the firm’s Software Update page. That way you One owners will know precisely when you’re able to break off a bit of KitKat for yourselves.

Update: We should mention that the update’s already rolling out to folks in Scandanavia, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Ukraine, Middle East and North Africa, with more to come.

HTC may launch the M8 with four color options

It’s possible that HTC is due to launch their new flagship soon, especially because the rumors are becoming almost non-stop. Here’s another one, and this time it’s about the new color options.

Thanks to XDA moderator Shen Ye, the M8 should launch with 4 color variants – red, blue, black, and grey. For those paying attention, the colors at launch will be the same colors that the HTC One was released with in 2013. Also, for what it’s worth, the exact color hex codes are #bebebe, #cc0000, #33b5e5, and #414141.

There seem to be a lot of rumors surfacing lately, so it will be interesting to see exactly when HTC will pull back the curtain on this device! Also, if you’d like to check out more rumors on the HTC M8, you can do so, here

Is the Nexus Line Ending?! Nokia X Specs Leak Out! – The ManDroid Show

mandroidshow-nexus5

Time for that video portion of Android news. I think the biggest, as well as most controversial, is the fact that there might be a chance of the Nexus line ending. A lot of people don’t think it’s true, and it probably isn’t. But would it be so bad if it happened? Also the Nokia X got its specs leaked out and they are pretty underwhelming. Nokia is just dipping their tow in guys. Enjoy the show!

Android 4.2.2 gains approval for AT&T HTC One X, slated for 1/29

HTC One X+ AT&T update Android 4.2.2

Looks like everyone still sporting a stock HTC One X on AT&T’s network will finally see their update to Android 4.2.2. The update has passed through AT&T’s technical team and has been certified for delivery to their customers. The Update obviously brings a much needed update to the device in terms of Android OS version. It also brings along the Sense 5 UI overlay as well. You guys can expect to find Blinkfeed and a few other additional software enhancements. All of which can be perused at the AT&T update support page.

Don’t forget though, this WILL BE the last update that will be pushed out to the device. There could be a smaller one later on if any major bugs are discovered upon delivery, but don’t expect any more OTA updates to move you up a notch in the Android OS versions.

HTC M8 to Have On-Screen Buttons Instead of Capacitive Buttons

htc-captive-buttons-htc-m8

The HTC M8 has gotten its fair share of leaked information the past couple months, and leak king, evleaks, has been on top of a lot of those leaks. The passed couple days the leak junky gave us two pieces of wallpaper straight out of the HTC M8 gallery, which are colorful little pieces of eye candy. Now we are getting word that the successor of the HTC One will finally ditch those capacitive buttons that have graced every HTC phone since the beginning, and they will jump onto the on-screen button bandwagon.

Evleaks doing what he does best, and he is usually spot on. I remember last year when he dropped the very first image of the original HTC One, and a lot of us didn’t believe it. Something about the design just didn’t scream HTC, but we soon came to find out that it was the design, and ended up being the best designed phone of 2013. Anyways, let us know your thoughts about this information. Glad to see the capacitive buttons go away?

GTA: San Andreas now available for (some) Windows Phones weeks late

Rockstar Games’ promise of an early January launch for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on Windows Phone devices may’ve been a bit off — the game just arrived on the Windows Phone store today, as spotted by CNET. The game carries a $7 price tag and works on a handful of WP8 devices (the HTC 8XT and Nokia Lumias 1520, 1320, 822, 820 and 810); it’s got the same touch-based, contextual controls that the iOS and Android versions employ. Should the Caricature Compton of Carl Johnson’s San Andreas entice you, you can snag it right here.

HTC M8 to feature on-screen buttons, report indicates

The upcoming HTC ‘M8′ smartphone will be HTC’s first handset to employ on-screen buttons. At least that’s what a recent tweet from evleaks tells us.

Generally speaking, it’s a mixed approach when it comes to navigation buttons on Android devices. Samsung has dabbled in various designs but lately seems relegated to a single home button with capacitive buttons. Sony likes to go all-in with the on-screen buttons and LG dances around with different approaches. It will be interesting to see if HTC goes all-in with on-screen or if they’re testing the waters.

Do you have a preference for your buttons? Does it even matter to you?

8-core HTC Desire phone rumor

It has been rumored for some time that HTC has been working with Mediatek chip-makers on producing a low to mid range 8-core smartphone for global markets.  The pictures below are of the supposed development between the two companies, the “HTC Desire”.

The phone is said to boast a 5 inch display, 720p resolution, Android 4.3, 1.5GB of RAM, and HTC Sense 5.5.  Now these are only rumors, but this could be HTC’s reaction to the iPhone 5c in order to get in on China’s growing smartphone market.

No availability has been released, but it has been said that the price will be 2000 Yuan or $330 USD.  At this price it would be a direct competitor for business in China.
