Microsoft set to launch first original programming for Xbox One in early 2014

Microsoft hopes its first wave of original TV programming for Xbox One will be out in early 2014, the company’s president of entertainment and digital, Nancy Tellem, tells Variety. At the latest, Redmond is hoping to have its original content out by the second quarter. She went on to say that the initiative has taken longer than expected and that the company is neither Netflix or Amazon. Her division is in the process of securing exclusives and trying to figure out whether the content is “best on Xbox or only on Xbox” when it comes to interactive functionality. Whether the first round of shows includes the previously-announced Spielberg-produced Halo series or something involving street soccer remains to be seen, but from the sounds of it, it won’t be long until we find out.

Tellem says Microsoft is keeping millenials in mind when it comes to how programming is consumed, whether it’s through multitasking or on-demand content that’s available whenever someone has the time to watch. The goal isn’t to redefine the TV viewing experience, it’s to evolve it, she tells Variety. If Microsoft’s original programming model with Xbox Video sounds familiar, that’s because the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are all leading the charge on their own streaming services. For more from Tellem, be sure to check out Variety’s piece.

Google’s Ingress to become a platform for other augmented reality games

Jason is waiting for you in Ingress' world

Eventually, Google’s Niantic Labs will have to wind down Ingress’ storyline. However, that won’t be the end of the developer’s augmented reality efforts. Niantic tells The Verge that it’s working on programming kits that would let aspiring coders build their own games with chat layers, location info and (if necessary) in-game ads. Jut don’t expect to write your own title any time soon. Niantic doesn’t yet know when the tools will be ready, and their availability may depend on the kind of flexibility that the team wants to offer. If the developer plays its cards right, though, Ingress fans will have a lot more to look forward to than just the beta’s end or iOS support.

Oculus Rift makers get $75 million from investors to finish consumer model

Short of attending an industry event or ordering your own dev kit, it’s a bit tricky to get your hands on an Oculus Rift VR headset. Soon, that could change: the company just secured $75 million in funding to bring the product to market. The influx of cash comes from Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm known for funding companies like Jawbone, Facebook Twitter and Skype. As part of the deal, the group’s co-founder, Mark Andreessen, will join the Oculus VR board of directors. “We believe Oculus will not only alter the gaming landscape, but will redefine fundamental human experiences in areas like film, education, architecture and design,” Andreessen said in the company’s official statement. ‘We’re incredibly excited to help them change the world.

The influx of cash will help Oculus VR finish building the consumer version of its Rift VR headset, which promises to bring immersive experiences to Windows, Mac, Linux and Android devices. The company didn’t go as far as announcing a release window for the headset just yet, but CEO Brendan Iribe seems optimistic. “This additional infusion of capital, as well as the leadership and experience of Marc Andreessen, will help us take the final steps toward our ultimate goal: making virtual reality something consumers everywhere can enjoy.” Details are scarce for now, but we’re told more details should be available tomorrow.

PlayStation 4 on top in November next-gen console sales according to NPD

Confirming what we already suspected, sales tracking firm NPD reports that the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One in North America during November. As of latest numbers, the Playstation 4 is in 2.1 million homes compared to the Xbox One’s 2 million — a great start for both consoles and a paltry sales difference. Sony released a statement from SCEA head Jack Tretton, which said, “Demand continues to overwhelm supply, but we’re working hard to get PS4 units into the hands of customers throughout the holiday season.” The full statement is just beyond the break.

Xbox One, meanwhile, was apparently November’s “fastest selling console,” with around 101K sold each day of availability (November 22nd through November 30th). Since the PS4 was available starting on November 15th, and the Xbox One went on sale starting November 22nd, the Xbox One caught up in sales so quickly because of higher demand. Or as NPD puts it, “When looking at sales on an average per-week basis, Xbox One led PS4.” Last month’s Xbox One launch was also Microsoft’s most successful console launch on record, which Microsoft’s assuredly enjoying.

SCEA CEO and president Jack Tretton:

“PlayStation 4 sales in North America and worldwide have been incredibly strong since launch, culminating in PS4 being recognized as the largest console launch in history. In North America alone, more than one million PS4 units were sold in only 24 hours and we’re pleased NPD has reported that PS4 was the top selling next gen platform for both hardware and software in November. We are humbled by the passion and excitement demonstrated by gamers for PS4. Demand continues to overwhelm supply, but we’re working hard to get PS4 units into the hands of customers throughout the holiday season.”

Razer Comms for Android keeps in-game chat alive when you leave your PC

Razer Comms for Android

It can be tough to leave in-game voice chats — step away to walk the dog and you may miss an important strategy session. You’ll stay in the loop with Razer’s new Comms for Android, though. The free app improves on rival clients from Steam and Teamspeak by supporting both voice chats and text while on the road; you won’t have to miss out on either team banter or private messages. Comms for Android is also useful if you’re still sitting at your desk, as it lets you respond to SMS and turn down calls through its Windows equivalent. The mobile software is available now through Google Play, and Razer promises that iOS users will get Comms sometime in the first quarter of 2014.

The next game from Braid’s creator supports the Oculus Rift

After indie game darling Braid‘s mass popularity, creator Jonathan Blow didn’t go crazy and buy a Lamborghini or something. He started a game studio instead, to create his next big thing: The Witness. Blow was on-stage at Sony’s big PlayStation 4 announcement event back in February (that was this year!), where he announced The Witness as headed to the PlayStation 4 as a “console exclusive” — a coup for Sony’s PlayStation 4 after Braid initially debuted exclusively on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 in 2008.

Since that announcement, Blow’s been in development mode. The Witness was featured at Sony’s PlayStation 4 review event, as well as trade shows like E3 and Gamescom, but he and his team have otherwise been pretty quiet. A few weeks ago, however, Blow posted a duo of enticing images (one of which is seen above) with the headline, “What could it mean??” The internet answered with the logical response: “Jonathan Blow possibly teasing Oculus [Rift] support for The Witness. This game seems like a perfect fit.” is Reddit’s headline. Surprising no one, The Witness — at least the PC version — will support the Oculus Rift.

“The main work we are doing is not for the Oculus,” Blow told Engadget. “But then, since we are doing 3D it is not that big a step to support the Oculus also, so we are implementing support for it.” In other news, apparently The Witness will support 3D televisions! It’s not clear how the headset will interact with the game in terms of gameplay input, but we’re thrilled enough by the thought of exploring The Witness‘ first-person open-world using the Oculus Rift. And hey, maybe there’ll be a consumer version in sight by the time The Witness launches in 2014!

Borderlands 2 mobile app turns QR codes into absurd in-game armaments

Borderlands 2 is attempting the Herculean task of exciting people about QR codes. With its new LootTheWorld mobile app, Gearbox Software (Borderlands, Brothers in Arms and, er, Aliens: Colonial Marine) is turning any barcode or QR square into in-game gear like acid-burst armor or a flame-spewing sniper rifle with a 12x-zoom scope.

Whether you bought the game last year or just downloaded it for free from the PlayStation Store, this app could be one of the more useful mobile companions on your phone. Perhaps best of all, it’s free and available right now from iTunes and Google Play. We’ve reached out to Gearbox for info on how the loot is determined and will update this post if we hear back. You should hurry along though, Mercenary Day is almost upon us.

Korean StarCraft pro among first foreign eSports competitors to obtain athletic visa

Thanks to support from the competitive gaming community, one of Korea’s most impressive eSports athletes has found a home in the US. Kim “Violet” Dong Hwan has ben trying to take his competitive StarCraft 2 career stateside for awhile, but a string of visa denials made his tournament schedule pretty sparse. With his country’s mandatory military service looming over his head, Hwan was facing early retirement if he wasn’t granted US-entry. Luckily that didn’t happen. Hwan’s manager rallied Blizzard Entertainment (StarCraft 2‘s publisher), Twitch.tv and Machinima execs, and over the course of seven months, they penned a 500-page application to immigration services. According to The Daily Dot, this tome included every article ever written about Hwan, translated into English.

The result? A P-1A pro-athlete visa that will allow Hwan to compete in the country for the next five years. This is only the second time an eSports competitor has gotten an athletic visa, and now, the government may view them on the same level as, say, baseball players. For the full story (including a harrowing tale of how Hwan’s house caught fire just after he sat down for a tournament) we urge you to check out the source.

Amazon opens digital PlayStation store in the UK

While Microsoft is slowly ramping up the price of exclusive Xbox One digital games in the UK, PlayStation 4 owners could soon witness the opposite. Following its launch in the US, Amazon has launched the PlayStation Network store on the other side of the Atlantic, letting you buy digital Playstation 3, Playstation 4 and Playstation Vita titles, as well as season passes and DLC, through its website. Although Amazon offered a number of launch promotions in the US, including $5 credit on digital orders, the company isn’t spreading the love to the UK and currently matches Sony’s PSN pricing. However, Sony’s decision to let PlayStation owners shop around for digital titles looks set to increase competition, lowering prices and helping you discover a Knack for finding the best game deals.
