HTC One for Sprint gets its KitKat update a little early
HTC must feel that it’s best to underpromise and overdeliver. While the company told American One owners that they wouldn’t get KitKat on time, the 535MB Android upgrade is already available on Sprint; eager subscribers just have to check for an update to start downloading. More patient types can wait until February 11th, when the carrier will begin pushing the OS to all users. There’s no word of an accelerated launch on other US networks, so Sprint customers may be sitting pretty for the next couple of weeks.
[Thanks, Mike]

HTC One Owners – Happy to share that Sprint is the 1st US carrier to launch #Android 4.4 on HTC One! Update available soon! #SprintRocks!

Microsoft eyeing Sundar Pichai as next CEO
A new rumor states that Sundar Pichai could be in the running to be the next Microsoft CEO.
It seems as though Microsoft hasn’t really been hunting for a new CEO as actively as they should be. But according to SiliconANGLE, they have their eyes on someone who would really do well in the company.
Sundar Pichai is Google’s senior vice president of Chrome, Apps, and Android. So when it comes to desktop and mobile software, he really shines. Not only that, but he has had his hands in development of Google Drive, Gmail, and Maps.
“Microsoft could really move the ball down the field with Sundar Pichai in creating a new open operating system model for cloud, mobile, and social” according to Dave Vellante, chief analyst at Wikibon. “The market has been looking for a CEO who can balance the role of leading the enterprise transformation while keeping that consumer momentum with xBox and reboot mobile. Pichai is the total package of technology leadership and business acumen.”
In the past few years, he’s done amazing things for Google, and most notably, Android. It would be very surprising if he decided to leave, however this isn’t the first time we’ve head rumors of him taking off. When Pichai was offered an exec position at Twitter, Google supposedly paid him $50 million to stay.
We know that wherever Pachai decides to stay, he will do amazing things. No one knows if his decision will be about the quality of work or about the money involved. Google has some amazing times ahead of them, so hopefully Pachai realizes that and decides to stick around.

Pebble’s smartwatch app store for iOS and Android arrives Monday
Pebble shipped its new all-metal “Steel” smartwatch earlier this week, and now reveals that app store updates for its iOS and Android companion software will roll out on Monday. Until now, wearers have had to hunt through a myriad of app developers and third-party sites to download new watchfaces or apps. Once the apps (and older Pebble devices) get updated and paired wirelessly over Bluetooth, you’ll only need a Pebble account and two clicks to load new software from a phone or tablet. Since the watch itself can only have up to eight apps loaded at any given time, easily managing the thousands of choices available is an important new feature. We took a long look at the store and its apps (including software from ESPN, GoPro and Foursquare) in our review of the Pebble Steel, owners should keep an eye on their mobile devices Monday for access.
Putting finishing touches on the Pebble appstore over the weekend-check us out on Monday! Looking good so far

Huawei’s new high-resolution tablet may give the Nexus 7 a run for its money
There isn’t much choice among 7-inch Android tablets with high-resolution screens — the Nexus 7 is frequently the only practical option. However, it’s about to get a proper challenger. China’s TENAA has certified the Huawei MediaPad X1 7.0, a small slate with a 1,920 x 1,200 display. It’s not clear that the X1′s 1.6GHz quad-core Hisilicon processor will outperform the Snapdragon S4 Pro inside the Nexus, but the device will be a featherweight at just 8.4 ounces and 0.3 inch thick. There’s also 3G inside. About the only clear setback is the use of Android 4.2 — where’s KitKat, Huawei? The company hasn’t said when it might reveal the new MediaPad, but certification raises the possibility of an announcement in the near future.

Archos’ Neon tablets are even more budget-friendly than usual
Archos is summoning 2011 with the specs for its new Neon tablet line. The slate trio represents the low-end of Archos’ lineup, and doesn’t impress in the specs department.
Falling under its Cobalt and Titanium series of tablets, all three tablets come sporting a quad-core A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of onboard storage and microSD expansion. The Neon line includes the 9-inch Archos 90 Neon with 800 x 400 display, 9.7-inch 97 Neon with 1024 x 768 display, and the 10.1-inch 101 Neon with a 1024 x 600 display.
The 9.7-inch tab comes with a 2-megapixel rear-facing cam, and all three come rocking forward-facing cams. Pricing and availability has yet to be announced, but we expect these three to come soon and under $200 apiece.

Google Wallet will make collecting loyalty points easier and noisier
Early adopters of mobile wallet services are brave enough to hand over the keys to their finances in the name of convenience. When you’re signed up to a plethora of loyalty schemes, though, inputting all these details before ditching the plastic could be quite the opposite. Google doesn’t want you burdened with such tasks, and in an impending update to its Wallet app for Android, has said it’ll introduce a new feature that adds loyalty cards with one click of your smartphone’s camera shutter. A natural progression from the recent recognition feature that adds debit and credit card details in the same way, snap a picture of your loyalty card and Wallet will do the rest. Furthermore, when you’re near a store with which you have a card, you’ll get a notification to remind you (that Google knows all). While the Android app was updated yesterday, there’s no mention of these additions, so we’ll take Big G’s word that it’s “rolling out this week.” No news on when an update could hit the iOS version of the app, but as Wallet only launched on the platform a few months ago, we’re not going to hold our breath.

Leaked Samsung app aims to catalog everything you do on your smartphone
Samsung could become the latest company to jump aboard the lifelogging bandwagon with its new “Life Times” app. Judging by leaked screenshots shared with SamMobile, Samsung wants to automatically log phone and app usage on Galaxy smartphones, cataloguing photos, emails, location, music, messages and social network updates, displaying all of that data in a daily digest. Samsung’s Story Album app already offers similar features for photos, based on common details such as location and time, but Life Times appears to function more as a diary app, like Day Journal for Android or Day One on iOS.
It does, however, fly in the face of reports suggesting Samsung is working with Google to scale down its Android customizations and reduce the number of in-house apps. Given the wording used in some of the screenshots, we reserve a healthy amount of scepticism while understanding the app could also be in early development. Samsung has rolled out new apps and services with its new flagship smartphones in the past, leading us to wonder if Life Times, if it is real, could make an appearance with the unveiling of a certain new Galaxy S handset.

Bing Rewards launches on mobile, but not for everyone
Now you can earn rewards for using Bing on your mobile device, as long as it’s not a Windows Phone.
Snubbing its own mobile OS once again, Microsoft brought Bing Rewards to iOS and Android devices Wednesday. Already available for desktop, the program helps hold down Microsoft’s 18.2% share of US searches by giving you credits every time you use Bing. You can then redeem credits for gift certificates to the likes of Dominos and Amazon, but not yet on mobile; that and Windows Phone support are “coming soon.”
You earn 1 credit for every 2 searches you complete, up to 10 credits daily. Which means, if you start now you could Bing yourself $1 short of an Applebee’s Chimicheesecake by St. Patty’s Day. To take part, sign up on the mobile site using your Microsoft ID or Facebook login.
