Microsoft debuts Office for Android with Tablet Preview

Microsoft Office and Dropbox

Back in March, Microsoft released Office for the iPad, but it required a subscription to Office 365. Unfortunately at the time, there wasn’t a version of Office available for Android tablets, but as of today, that’s no longer the case. Along with releasing iPhone apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Microsoft has also announced a preview of Office for Android.

The best part about all of this is the fact that you don’t need an Office 365 subscription anymore, meaning that you can use the suite of Office Mobile apps, for free. Now if you want to take advantage of Dropbox integration, then you will still need to subscribe to Office 365, but if you’re okay without it, then feel free to jump on board.

If you want to get the Office for Android tablet preview, then just head over to Microsoft’s form found here, and fill out the necessary information. After completed, you should receive an invite in the next week or two. One thing that Microsoft would like everyone to note, if your device is expected to be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop, please do not install the Office preview. It’s not known whether the Office preview will work, but if you are going to be using the preview, just keep compatibility in mind.

Pushbullet updated to send SMS messages from your computer

pushbullet sms update

Pushbullet has a lot of great functionality that allows you to view and reply to notifications from your computer without touching your phone. Up until now, you could only reply to SMS messages sent to you through Pushbullet. With an update yesterday, this has changed.

Now you can start SMS messages from your computer with Pushbullet

With this update, you can now start a SMS message from your computer to send to someone. As long as you have the app installed and the browser extension, you can head to the “SMS” tab and get going. Auto-complete for contacts is available, but if you don’t like that you can change this under the settings.

Currently this is only available on Chrome, but it is making its way onto Firefox and Opera.

If you don’t currently have the app and want to try it, hit the widget below.

Do you like this update?

Leaked screens show LG’s take on Android 5.0 Lollipop

LG G3 For Lollipop

While questions about which devices are going to be receiving Android 5.0 Lollipop, LG users may not have to worry about anything. Even though Google has just released the source code, LG European branches are telling their customers that the LG G3, released earlier this year, will definitely be updated to Lollipop. If you’re one of those who picked up last year’s flagship, the LG G2, you shouldn’t worry either due to the fact that it’s reported that the G2 will also be updated to Lollipop.

The screenshots give us an idea of what LG is doing in regards to adding their take onto Android 5.0. The biggest change that we can see from the aforementioned screenshot, is the updated notification dropdown. However, it seems that the updated version of LG’s software will still be heavily laden with their own layout, with just touches of Lollipop spread around. It will definitely be interesting to see how everything plays out with how LG works Lollipop into their interface.

Even though stock images are being delayed due to Wi-Fi battery draining bugs, everyone can expect to see their devices updated within the next few weeks or so. Although the images have to go through their paces with the respective carriers for the Moto X 2014, we should still start seeing the roll-outs for those devices soon as well.

Are you excited to see Android 5.0 Lollipop on your LG G3 or your LG G2? Let us know in the comments below.

Nexus 6 sold out in minutes; will replenish every Wednesday

Nexus 6

The Nexus 6 is one popular device it seems. As usual with a Nexus device, the first couple of times you can purchase one it is sold out quickly. This was the case with the Nexus 6 last week, and the same today. In fact, I was going to write an article informing everyone about availability, until I looked to see they were sold out already! This happens every year. When I got my Nexus 4, I had to wait 3 months after initial release.

However Google is going to try to make things different this time. On the Nexus 6 Play Store page, there’s a message underneath the price that says the following:

“We are getting more Nexus 6 devices in stock as soon as possible. To make things simpler for you, we will work to make more devices available each Wednesday and encourage you to visit the site then.”

They go on to say that AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular will have availability later this month (Verizon is oddly absent here…).

If you’d like, you can bookmark this page and check out the widget below to see when the Nexus 6 will be available. Check back and it will update when there’s availability.

Otherwise, check out the widget in the right sidebar throughout the site that says “Is the Nexus 6 available today?” which will take you to a site that says the same thing as above.

Are you trying to get a Nexus 6 but are having trouble getting one?

Download and Install Google Maps version 9.0.0 APK (Material Design)

nexus2cee_The-new-Google-Maps-app_thumb

The next app to be treated to material design is Google Maps, and boy does it look good. Hitting version 9.0.0, this Google Maps update focuses entirely on bringing Material Design to the app, as well as OpenTable integration in the US.

The official Google Maps version 9.0.0 APK can be downloaded by clicking here.

Why Download?

If you’re the type of person who likes to stay on the cutting edge of software then you’ll want to get your hands on the file. And, given software updates can take days or weeks to fully roll out, this ensures you’re moving up in the line.

What’s the Risk?

We’ll only share files or links to files that we feel can be trusted. Google does a great job of signing apps, checking them for malware, and protecting users. If you’re not sure whether you want to download the app at this time, simply wait for your update to arrive. No harm, no foul.

Google Maps gets a makeover with built-in restaurant reservations

Google Maps makeover

At long last, Google Maps has received the Material Design revamp that many were expecting — and it’s more than just a skin-deep upgrade. New versions of Maps’ Android and iOS apps focus on the super-flat graphics and lively animations that you’d expect from Google’s new design language, but they also include built-in restaurant reservations through OpenTable. If you’re in the US, you can now book a table right from a place page instead of visiting a website or launching another app.

You’ll also have more options for getting around if you’re a fan of ridesharing services. When you’re looking for directions, Maps now estimates both the pickup time and cost of an Uber ride to a given destination; you can quickly figure out whether or not you’re better off taking the bus. Both the Android and iOS updates to Maps should reach your devices within the next few days, so you won’t have to wait too long if you’re eager to check out either the fresh look or the new features coming along for the ride.

Onyx communicator lets you live out your ‘Star Trek’ dreams for $99

OnBeep's Onyx communicator

Don’t deny it — at some point, you watched Star Trek and wondered when you could simply slap a device on your chest to speak with your crew. You won’t have to wait hundreds of years, thankfully. OnBeep has just unveiled the Onyx, a clothing-worn communicator that lets you chat with groups just by pressing a button. The Bluetooth add-on lets you securely message up to 15 people once using your Android phone or iPhone as the home base; you can also see where they are and whether they’re available. The saucer-shaped design isn’t nearly as discreet as Captain Picard’s badge, but it’s light and won’t wreck your favorite shirt.

You can pre-order the Onyx now for $99, and the first wave of orders should arrive in December. That’s a lot of money for what you might see as a wearable speakerphone. However, OnBeep suggests that this simplicity is part of the appeal — you can focus more on coordinating with friends and colleagues, and less on getting the conversation started.

First specs for Samsung Galaxy S6 surface online

samsung_logo

Last week we reported that Samsung is planning on totally changing its smartphone strategy, and this starts with them code-naming the Galaxy S6 “Project Zero“, allegedly because they’re starting from scratch. Well, SamMobile has some details from their “insiders” detailing some specs from the Galaxy S6.

The display on the Galaxy S6 will have a QHD (2560×1440) resolution, with an undetermined screen size. The camera sensor will be the same found in the Galaxy Note 4, though they’re still deciding between 16 MP and 20 MP, with the front camera 5 MP. It will come with 32, 64, and 128 GB variations.

The Galaxy S6 will be powered by the new Exynos 7420, which is a 64-bit chip with four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores. Evidently this chip will also have an in-house LTE modem as opposed to the modem from Intel currently powering a majority of Samsung’s devices. It will also have a Qualcomm variant, utilizing the Snapdragon 810. SamMobile guesses the Galaxy S6 will have 3 GB of RAM.

Take all of this information with a grain of salt, as any and all of this could change at any moment considering they’re starting over and are still in development.

Personally, while all of these specs sound good, I’ll be looking more towards the design and software that come on the device to see what changes Samsung has brought to its flagship to separate it from the rest of its line-up. It’d also be really nice if they were more communicative of their upgrade schedule, and took an effort to provide a timeline as HTC has with its HTC Advantage promise.

What do you think, do these specs sound good to you? What would you like to see from the supposedly new direction Samsung is taking?
