Expand storage on the Galaxy S7 with these microSD cards

Although the option to add a microSD card to the Galaxy S6 was absent, Samsung brought it back with the Galaxy S7. This means more room to save photos, record HD video, and upload your extensive library of music. There are many sizes and speeds to sort through when it comes to choosing a microSD card for the Galaxy S7, and these are a few of our favorites.

Save everything

SanDisk Ultra 200GB

This is getting ridiculous

SanDisk Ultra 400GB

sandisk-400gb-micro-sd-card.jpg?itok=VYp

Need a lot of space? Like, a lot of space? If so, SanDisk’s 400GB card is just what you’ve been looking for. You’ll have a hard time even getting close to filling this puppy up, and with 100MB/s transfer speeds, it’s a speed demon, too.

$112 at Amazon

Built to last

Samsung PRO Endurance 64GB

samsung-pro-endurance-3m80.jpg?itok=Lwb5

This PRO Endurance card from Samsung isn’t the best value GB-to-price wise, but it’s built to last for years and years. It offers 25 times longer recording than competing cards and is magnetic-, temperature-, shock-, and water-proof.

$29 at Amazon

If you’re still holding on to a Galaxy S7 in 2018, chances are you’re starting to hit the limits of its internal storage. The Samsung EVO Plus 64GB is probably the best choice for most people since it offers a lot of extra room for a really low price, but if you want even more space, the SanDisk Ultra 200GB and 400GB are great options, too.

The new iOttie iTap 2 magnetic mounts are designed for larger smartphones

Secure your phone and drive safe.

The new iTap Magnetic 2 car mount series from iOttie includes stronger magnets, larger models, and a variety of ways to secure your smartphone to your car. For a while there, smartphones were getting smaller. Now we’re seeing a lot of Plus sizes and larger screens. The iTap Magnetic 2 appeals to these larger phones while still giving you the flexibility to use something smaller.

air-vent-mount-d8so.jpg?itok=xAPvHycf
Each version of the iTap will start at $24.95, so the only real difference is how you want to attach them to your car. The mounts will work with both Apple and Android smartphones. Each model comes with a Metal Plate Kit that you’ll attach to your smartphone so it can connect with the magnets of the mount. The kit has protective film to keep your phone in good shape, and the magnets allow you some flexibility to move and arrange your phone.

The dashboard and windshield iTap 2 includes two magnets to ensure your smartphone stays connected even while in its case. The suction cup is strong, reusable, and designed to cling well wherever you place it on the windshield. If you prefer a dashboard install, the pad will work on smooth and textured surfaces. It works on a ball joint to pivot and rotate for the best possible angle.

The iTap 2 air vent mount can secure itself to any air vent in your car using a strong Twist Lock mechanism. This is one of the easiest ones to install since it easily grabs hold of the air vent.

The final model from iOttie attaches the iTap 2 mount through your CD player slot. If you don’t bother to use that part of your car’s stereo anymore, it might as well find some use now.

You can also find these mounts on iOttie, although they seem to be $5 cheaper on Amazon.

Ingress Prime is now available as a free update

ingress-eyntk-2018-hero.jpg?itok=2Fqoity

Ingress Prime is here, so the time is right to get back into the augmented reality game that started it all.

Before Niantic struck mobile gaming gold with Pokémon Go, there was Ingress — one of the most ambitious games ever created.

Ingress was the first mobile game to revolutionize the use of location data to create the first game set in augmented reality. In the game, you learn that exotic matter of unknown origin is seeping into our world — all around us at all times, but only those with the right tools can see and harness its power.

It’s a game that millions of gamers have downloaded and played over the span of six with a global community of active agents keeping the game alive six years on after it’s initial release around the world.

With a major update expected for 2018 that’s expected to upgrade the visuals, add new AR features that tap into Google’s ARCore and hopefully breathe some new life into the game for active players and those of us who might be coming in fresh or checking back in after years of inactivity.

Download: Ingress (Free)

What’s new with Ingress Prime?

November 5, 2018 — Ingress Prime is now available for download

ingress-prime-phone-scanner.jpeg?itok=JU

Niantic has released the big Ingress Prime update that looks to build on the original game with refined mechanics, new abilities, and a redesigned user interface. Available as a free update to the original Ingress game, Ingress Prime is free for all to download and play.

For those who preferred the original Ingress, Niantic is looking to bring out an “Ingress Classic” client. Niantic’s focus is sure to be on Ingress Prime and Pokemon Go at this point, though, so don’t expect much in the way of updates. We’ll share more details on that once we have them. In the meantime, grab the update and go capture some portals!

Free at Google Play

What is Ingress?

What is Ingress? Perhaps the better question is, how have you not seen it? Ingress is all around you, not so much being “played” as it is being “lived” day in and day out by millions of people. Chances are you know some of them, and chances are you’ve seen it in action. Felt it, even.

Ingress at its most basic is an alternate reality game (aka AR) that pits two factions against each other for control of Mind Units the world over. You’re either among the Enlightened, or you’re part of the Resistance. Portals are the key to the entire game, disguised as everyday objects all over the world. Portals can be linked together until a field is established, thus capturing the Mind Units within.

Initially, the story of Ingress was cryptic and ever-evolving, but at this point, the nuances between the two factions have faded to the point where it’s less about picking a side on the basis of philosophy and more pertinent to pick a side with friends you can play with.

Along with the major Ingress Prime update that released in 2018, there are also real-world Ingress events planned around the world throughout the year. This can be a great way to connect with other Ingress agents in your area so you can strategize together.

Complete list of real-world Ingress events for 2018

Glossary of important terms

Ingress isn’t your typical game, and it’s admittedly really complex to get started. If you’re coming in fresh, here are the essential concepts you need to understand to get started.

Factions: Choosing a faction is the first decision you will make after selecting your username and it’s pretty important. Back when the game initially launched, there were significant narrative differences between the two factions, but over the years things have sort of devolved to the point where choosing between team green (the Enlightened) and team blue (the Resistance). If you’re joining to play with friends, be sure you’re all on the same faction so you can play and attack portals together.

Portals: Portals are located at various public points of interest around your town. These are real-life locations that are marked on the Intel Map in the Ingress map and you’re required to physically go to the location to hack or capture the Portals. Once you’ve captured a portal for your faction by deploying items called resonators, you can link the portal to other captured portals. An enclosed triangle of three portals will create a “Control Field” which secures the territory for your faction.

Action Points: Action Points (AP) are essentially your XP for leveling up your account. There are many ways to collect AP — by capturing or hacking a portal, placing a resonator, linking two portals, or destroying the other faction’s setups. The trickiest part about starting out now will be finding portals that a Level 1 can gain AP at, and is a large part why it’s so hard to jump into Ingress so late into the game.

Exotic Matter: In the lore of Ingress, Exotic Matter (XM) is at the heart of the whole game. XM leaks into our world through Portals and each faction is trying to control the Portals to control the Exotic Matter. You collect XM simply by traveling through areas containing XM (ie: walking around with the Ingress app open), which replenish your XM count. So get out there and start walking around.

How to start playing Ingress Prime again in 2018

Whether it’s been some time since you logged into your Ingress account or you’re coming to the game fresh in 2018, it’s easy to get set up to play Ingress Prime, but unlike other casual games, Ingress requires a certain level of commitment from its agents — to properly play Ingress you’ll need to be prepared to walk around and explore your town to hack and attack different Portals.

If you’ve played Pokémon Go at all, you’ll be somewhat familiar with the concept of walking around and checking in with different stops — in fact, Niantic used many of the previously established Portals from Ingress to create the framework for Pokémon Go’s PokéStops and Gyms.

The easiest part of jumping into Ingress is creating an account — Once you’ve downloaded the game and load it up for the first time you’ll be able to instantly create an Ingress account using your Google Account.

ingress-setup-screens-01.jpeg?itok=RoV4_ingress-setup-screens-02_0.jpg?itok=sAFCingress-setup-screens-03_0.jpg?itok=VIn0

This is a game that’s all about teamwork and strategizing as a team, so if you’re just starting out or rejoining the cause, you’ll want to connect with other players. The Ingress subreddit is a great place to start, which also has a fantastic wiki for beginners that will help you get going.

Alternatively, there’s this great post from the AC Forum that has proven to be extremely valuable for new players over the years.

If you’re just starting out or are reconnecting an account that’s perhaps been dormant for years, chances are your level is going to pale in comparison to the agents controlling the portals in your area. You may need to travel significantly out of the way to places where you can earn that AP.

Are you an active agent?

While Niantic won’t release firm numbers on active Ingress users, the fact it continues to support the Ingress community speaks to their commitment to those who keep the Ingress project alive.

The fact is that it’s pretty rare these days for a developer to continue to support a game like Ingress for six years, especially while concurrently launching a massive game like Pokémon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter: Wizard’s Unite game.

We’ll be sure to check out Ingress Prime once it’s live to see if it breathes new life into such a unique concept for a game.

Echo Dot (3rd Gen) Review: Bigger, better, and much louder

Amazon’s heavy hitter has been overhauled with a focus on quality and volume.

echo-dot-3-hero.jpg?itok=M_kLd3fe

When people say they have an Amazon Echo, they almost always mean they have an Echo Dot. The cheapest of the Echo family regularly drops into stocking-stuffer price points, which allowed for these speakers to quickly rise in popularity over the last two years. But popularity doesn’t necessarily mean quality, and the competition quickly moved to make mini speakers with better speakers and a more visually pleasing design.

Amazon, now on the third generation of its Echo product line, has responded with a new Dot. And at first glance, it looks an awful lot like Amazon is reacting to the competition. After a few days of using it, and seeing how much better this new speaker is over its predecessor, I think the only company Amazon is competing with is itself.

Crank up the volume

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen)

echo-dot-3-render.jpg?itok=q69vZYG7

$49 at Amazon

A worthy upgrade in almost every way.

Amazon’s Echo Dot has grown up quite a bit, bringing with it improved audio and noticeably better microphones.

The Good

  • MUCH louder
  • Nice tactile buttons
  • Improved design
  • Easy set up

The Bad

  • No more USB port
  • Audio gets muddy at top volumes
  • Light animations aren’t as smooth

echo-dot-3-compare.jpg?itok=BLjLeInc

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) What I like

I thought I knew exactly what I was getting myself into as I opened the box to the new Echo Dot. It’s an Echo, after all. Alexa is a ubiquitous platform, and the Echo Dot is supposed to be the low end of what this experience offers. I wasn’t expecting a lot of surprises here, as I already have multiple 2nd Gen Echo Dots in the house.

Wow, was I wrong.

Every part of this experience exceeded my expectations, starting with the initial set up. On multiple occasions, I have had to go in through the Alexa app and manually pair to an Echo product because the auto detection had failed. This time it immediately connected and, because my Wi-Fi network was stored in my Amazon account, was available on my network almost instantly.

This new Echo Dot is loud, especially when compared to its predecessor. Sitting the two side by side, a 2nd Gen Echo Dot at max volume is right around as loud as a 3rd Gen Echo Dot is at 30%.

It’s not just louder, too; there’s a lot more character to the audio. You get some bass with your little speaker, which absolutely could not be said of the last Echo Dot. If you were planning on listening to music with the last Echo Dot, you really needed to connect a speaker to the 3.5mm jack at the back. With this new Echo Dot you can certainly do the same, but in smaller rooms, you probably won’t need to. In fact, there’s a reasonable argument to be made for having two of these Echo Dots paired and playing audio together from different sides of the room instead.

This increase in volume meant a change in how the microphones on the Echo Dot are set up. The previous generation could barely handle picking up the Alexa passphrase when playing music at a reasonable volume, and the little animation for where the microphone thought the request was coming from is frequently wrong. This new Echo Dot has multiple microphones and does a noticeably better job picking up your voice even when the volume is up high. You can see the four microphone holes on the top of the speaker clearly, and the results are obvious from the moment you set it up.

This thing sounds better than its size suggests. A lot better.

Finally, I realize this is a small thing most people won’t notice, but the buttons on the top of the Echo Dot feel really nice. This speaker has the same four buttons its predecessor has, but they all have a more tactile and satisfying click when you press down on them. No more spongey buttons is a great thing, even if these buttons don’t get a lot of use.

echo-dot-ports.jpg?itok=TMOb4gKW

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) What I don’t like

Amazon gets lots of credit for making the speakers on the Echo Dot louder and adding some character to the sound these speakers produce, but louder does not mean better. At higher volumes, the audio quality on this speaker suffers. Everything becomes a little muddy at the 70% mark, and gets noticeably worse as it gets louder. At 100%, none of the songs I played on it were things I wanted to listen to. It’s cool to be able to say this speaker is louder and noticeably better than the one in the Google Home Mini, but kind of hard to see how it matters much if you don’t ever want to use it at those louder volumes.

This new Echo Dot is an improvement in nearly every way.

This new, louder speaker requires more power to drive it, which makes sense. The small 9W power adapter included in the previous Echo Dot has been replaced with a larger 15W power adapter, and at the other end the miniUSB has been replaces with a barrel connector. This isn’t a big deal to many, but I really liked being able to grab a random cable and use it to power an Echo Dot. I liked being able to connect to things that weren’t a standard wall outlet, but those features are gone now. And, honestly, I doubt many others will notice.

Amazon’s new design makes the light ring around the outside of the Echo Dot more visible from more angles, which is fantastic. Lots of people rely on this light animation to confirm Alexa is listening before giving a command. This new design doesn’t contain an LED array that is quite as densely packed as some other Echo products, though, so the animations look a little segmented at times and not quite as smooth as I’ve come to expect from this line of products. Also not a huge deal, just worth noting if you’re already a fan of these speakers.

echo-dot-3.jpg?itok=NqUtyoJ5

Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) Should you buy it?

Amazon didn’t make a speaker to compete with Google or Apple. It made a speaker for people who want to try Alexa for the first time, or who already own an Echo Dot. This speaker isn’t going to convince anyone to switch platforms, and until we get to the holidays and Amazon drops it down to those crazy $30 prices there won’t be a mad rush to buy these from people who don’t already own them.

But if you own an Echo Dot right now and aren’t totally thrilled with it, this new upgrade is an improvement in nearly every way. If you are already a fan of the Alexa ecosystem, you’re going to love this speaker. In fact, if you’re looking for a first smart speaker, we think this is the one you should buy.

4.5
out of 5

Personally, I’m excited to see which company makes a big battery enclosure for this so it can be portable. That worked really well for the last generation.

NFL and Epic team up to bring all 32 NFL teams’ uniforms to Fortnite

Out of the gridiron, into the storm.

The National Football League and Epic Games have announced a new partnership that’ll bring some NFL content to Fortnite. All 32 NFL teams get love here, so you can represent your colors no matter who you bleed for.

The team outfits will be available in the Fortnite shop from Friday, November 9. The way it works is simple: you buy the “NFL Outfit” item from the shop, and from there you can choose which team you want and the number that’ll show on the back. You’ll be able to buy up to 8 outfits in all, so if you have love for more than one NFL team you can show it for them, too.

Other cosmetics will be available to go along with the outfits, including NFL-themed gliders, harvesting tools, emotes, and skins, the latter category housing a nice referee skin, we’re told. Someone’s gotta keep everyone in check, right? Get your V-Bucks ready and open the shop at 7PM Eastern once November 9 rolls around. You can play Fortnite on Android, iOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Apple’s Confusing Mac Lineup: MacBook Air vs. MacBook

Apple at its October event unveiled a new 2018 MacBook Air that’s been entirely overhauled with a Retina display, Thunderbolt 3, a slimmed down design, a faster processor, and other hardware upgrades.

The new $1,199 machine is a great addition to the MacBook Pro, but there’s just one problem – Apple already had a notebook with all of these features. The 2018 MacBook Air is very similar to the 12-inch MacBook, which did not receive a 2018 update.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.
The 2018 MacBook Air, which Apple is selling for $1,199, is better in almost every way than the 12-inch MacBook, which is still priced at $1,299. It has a larger Retina display, a faster Amber Lake processor, upgraded Intel UHD Graphics 617, two Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, up to 1.5TB of storage, Touch ID and T2 chip, better battery life, and it costs $100 less (though you’re getting 128GB storage instead of 256GB with the base model).

At this point in time, with no update, all the MacBook has going for it is a slimmer body and a lighter weight, but even then, the difference is minute given the revamped design of the MacBook Air.

The 2018 MacBook Air measures in at 0.16 to 0.61 inches thick, compared to the MacBook, which comes in at 0.14 to 0.52 inches. It also weighs 2.75 pounds instead of the MacBook’s 2 pounds, but those are really the only differentiating factors.

Right now, there is absolutely no good reason to purchase a MacBook over a MacBook Air, and anyone considering a new Apple notebook that’s aiming for portability and good battery life should choose the MacBook Air.

You can get close to MacBook Air performance with the upgraded MacBook with a 1.4GHz Core M processor, but the MacBook Air is still going to beat it because it’s using eighth-generation processors instead of seventh-generation and it costs $1,549 to upgrade to that higher-powered processor.

If and when Apple upgrades the MacBook with next-generation Intel chips, it’s still going to be almost on par with the MacBook Air if there are no other changes to form factor or specifications, so it’s a mystery why the MacBook is still in Apple’s lineup and why Apple has opted to have two machines that are so similar.

Prior to the October update, Apple hadn’t made significant changes to the MacBook Air since 2015, and it was believed that the machine, which was priced at $999, was sticking around as a low-cost option until component prices for the MacBook came down. With the launch of the new version, that’s clearly no longer Apple’s plan, and the future of the MacBook and MacBook Air is murkier than ever.

As for the MacBook Air vs. the MacBook Pro, things are a bit clearer. The MacBook Air is still the lower-cost lower-performance option that is ideal for lighter workloads that don’t require high-powered software.

All MacBook Pro models, including the 2017 non-Touch Bar models, offer better performance than the MacBook Air’s 7W Amber Lake processor, but with the base MacBook Air vs. the base non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro priced at $1,299, there’s not a huge difference. When deciding between these two machines, it’s going to come down to whether you prefer a smaller form factor and Touch ID or slightly better performance.

What do you think Apple is planning for the MacBook in the future? Let us know in the comments.

Won’t get fooled again: Chrome 71 to block all ads on abusive sites

Google is looking to foil ads that trick, deceive, and hoodwink web users by blocking them entirely. Starting with the Chrome 71 release slated for December, the browser will automatically remove any ads on certain sites which deliver “consistent abusive experiences.” Website owners concerned that they might be caught up in this ad-blocking program can use Google’s new Abusive Experiences tool to determine if their sites will trigger it.

In November 2017, Google introduced protections in Chrome against so-called “trick to click” links which attempted to redirect web visitors to sites they didn’t intend to visit, to make money from ads or steal identities. The Chrome 71 update is an extension of that. Instead of stopping forceful redirects, Chrome 71 will simply weigh whether a website contains ‘abusive’ content, and if it does, it will block all of its ads.

Following its own internal investigations into abusive web practices, Google claims to have identified the tactics that are being used. Such ads may act like system warnings, or use fake “X” close buttons to try and encourage a web user to click on the content erroneously. Such scams can lead to phishing attacks, as well as attempts to steal the personal information of a user.

Chrome 71 will look to do away with that by punishing website owners who publish such content in the first place, by removing all adds wholesale. Any website caught out by this will have 30 days to fix any of the experiences flagged by Google’s tool before Chrome removes all ads from the site entirely.

Such protections will not extend to those using alternative browsers, of which there are a few. Mozilla’s Firefox recently introduced better tracking protection of its own, targeting adverts that use trackers to glean information from web users that they might not otherwise be happy sharing.

Chrome 71 won’t be released until December, but it will bring with it a number of additional changes. One that will please many is new autoplay policies, which will look to reduce the number of videos and audio content which automatically play when a website is opened, giving users much more control of the content that runs in their browser.

If you want to try Chrome 71 out now, you can download it as the Chrome beta release.

Audi gets animated with a cartoon concept car for ‘Spies in Disguise’

It’s not unusual for car manufacturers to mock up cars of the future, but you’ve probably never seen one quite like this Audi. The German automobile maker has created a concept car that will appear on the big screen in the upcoming animated film Spies in Disguise.

The Audi RSQ e-tron is an entirely electric and entirely fictional vehicle crafted by the Audi Design team in collaboration with Blue Sky Studios — the production company behind Spies in Disguise. According to Audi, the RSQ e-tron features a hologram speedometer, fully automated driving technology so spies can go hands-off while on the road, and is packed with special features that only secret agents would need.

“Audi takes a digital, forward-looking approach to the design process, both in developing fictional content and in the production modeling studio,” Frank Rimili, head of exterior design for concept vehicles at Audi, said in a press release. “At Audi Design, we combine state-of-the-art digital visualization techniques with handmade precision. These processes enable us to implement futuristic design ideas with the same precision in the development of a fictional virtual concept vehicle such as the RSQ e-tron.”

The RSQ e-tron will be driven by Lance Sterling, a secret agent who is described as “the world’s most awesome spy.” Sterling will be voiced by Will Smith. He’ll be joined by Tom Holland, who you might know as the most recent kid to play Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Holland will voice Walter Beckett, an awkward scientific genius who creates all the gadgets that Sterling uses on his missions.

“Audi and Fox have been great collaborators over the years and we’re thrilled to evolve our relationship, bringing Audi into the world of animation for the first time. This project was the perfect opportunity to highlight Audi’s e-tron technology and give our intrepid spy, Lance Sterling, his own signature spy mobile,” Erin Williams, vice president of marketing partnerships for Twentieth Century Fox Film, said.

If you’d like to get behind the wheel of the RSQ e-tron, well, you can’t — at least not any time soon. You can, however, try out one of Audi’s other e-tron vehicles, which are actually real. As for the RSQ, you can see it in action when Spies in Disguise hits theaters in September 2019.

The iRobot Roomba 675 robot vacuum cleaner drops to $248 today

The iRobot Roomba 675 robot vacuum is down to $248 on Amazon. The Roomba 675 has been selling for around $270 for the last month or so, but it was going for as much as $300 before that. The drop to $248 is the lowest we have ever seen.

roomba-675-aofg.jpg?itok=91_mZECmTarget does have this Roomba for around $250, which is nice if you’re taking advantage of Target’s free two-day shipping during the holidays as well. Most retailers are selling it for around $269 like Home Depot.

The robot vacuum uses a three stage cleaning system and multi-surface brushes to make sure it picks up everything, including larger debris and smaller dust particles. The Roomba’s sensors help it determine places that have more dirt so it can focus on those spots. That’s helpful for high-traffic areas around the house. It comes with an edge-sweeping brush that helps get debris out of corners. The Roomba can be controlled and scheduled through the free app, and it’s compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It will work for up to 90 minutes before automatically returning to its base to dock and recharge.

We’re going to see plenty of Roomba deals leading up to Christmas. If you’re looking for a robot vacuum cleaner with a few more features, you can check out our Roomba Roundup. However, this price is $50 better than the more advanced models right now.

Keep track of the time and your health with Samsung’s $279 Galaxy Watch

Beautiful watch. Better looking price.

The Samsung 42mm Bluetooth Galaxy Watch is down to $279, which is the cheapest it’s ever been. You can find this deal price at several retailers like Best Buy. The watch normally sells for around $330. The price is available in Black and Rose Gold, and this beats the only other deal we’ve seen on these by $20.

galaxy-watch-ekcn.jpg?itok=aR1ex_7U

You can also upgrade to the 46mm watch, which is on sale for the first time today, too. Get it from Amazon for just $299. You can find it on sale at B&H and other retailers.

The Galaxy Watch is a brand new smartwatch just released in early September. Our review gave it four out of five stars and called it the “do-everything smartwatch”:

The Galaxy Watch continues to offer excellent hardware, a beautiful display and software that’s uniquely tailored to the form factor and glorious rotating bezel. Its software is more advanced than Wear OS, and can be configured to offer just as much — or as little — as you need it for.

The watch has built-in health tracking, a stylish design, and a three-day battery life with wireless charging. It even comes with a wireless charging dock. The Bluetooth connection helps it pair with both Android and iOS smartphones, and it comes with a one-year warranty.
