Google increases international roaming speeds on Project Fi to attract new subscribers
Google has announced that Project Fi subscribers will be able to take full advantage of high speed data in more than 135 destinations. The company noted in an official blog post that most smartphone owners who travel abroad opt for local SIM cards or to forego mobile access over paying out for carrier charges. Project Fi hopes this move will attract those customers who wish to use their phones abroad without worry about bills when landing back in the U.S.

Noting the addition of Three to the Project Fi network, Google revealed that speeds offered on its experimental network are up to 10-20 times faster than before when travelling abroad. As an added bonus, subscribers to Project Fi still do not require to pay extra for this bump in speed (or net access overall). It’s simply $10 per 1GB as the company charges within the U.S., on top of the $20 per month for voice, tethering and SMS.
As an added bonus, the company is offering $150 off the Nexus 6P for the next week should you purchase one and activate it with Project Fi. (The Nexus 6P promotion kicks off at 1p.m. ET.)

Curiosity awakens from nap to resume full operations
Curiosity is back to work on Mars after it shut itself down due to a software glitch on July 2nd. Even though tech support for the rover is nearly 60 million miles away, NASA scientists weren’t too worried about the issue. As suspected, the cause was found to be a “software mismatch in one mode of how image data are transferred on board.” However, other means are available to transmit image data, so the team powered up the rover on July 9th and will simply avoid using the problematic mode.
Here I go again on my own. Down the only road I’ve ever known. Out of safe mode—back to work https://t.co/vPXUmmiTyj pic.twitter.com/v4TI4AZt5T
— Curiosity Rover (@MarsCuriosity) July 11, 2016
Curiosity has gone into safe mode several times before, all back in 2013. However, the previous glitches were more serious, as NASA actually had to restore its software systems from a backup. The mission was recently extended for two years to let the robot make more breathtaking discoveries and hopefully even spot some water.
It could be extended even further, but it’s hard to say whether we’ll get Opportunity-like endurance out of Curiosity. The nuclear-powered robot’s plutonium-238 power supply could last up to 15 years, but it’s likely that its batteries or other parts will break down first. Many scientists think that if it’s still going when the Mars 2020 rover arrives on the red planet, that would be a great outcome.

Climate change is pushing clouds up and toward the poles
For the first time, a researchers have found evidence that global warming caused by humans is affecting clouds — and not in a good way. A study by team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography shows that clouds are being pushed up and out of mid-range latitudes toward the poles. “It’s really the first credible evidence that we have of climate change and clouds in the observed record ,” says Scripps atmospheric scientists Joel Norris. The study shows how difficult it is to predict global warming and the strong need for better ways to measure it.
Getting the data wasn’t easy, as the team had to normalize unreliable data from satellites with degrading sensors, shifted orbits and other problems. Once they figured out how to get rid of the artifacts, researchers found that storms in the middle latitudes both south and north of the equator had shifted toward the poles. In addition, the tops of the highest clouds had also moved upwards. That matches the scariest predictions created by computer climate models.
It’s really the first credible evidence that we have of climate change and clouds in the observed record.
Obviously, that results in less precipitation in mid-latitudes, making arid regions more arid. However, it also reinforces global warming, as the mid-latitude areas that get the highest solar radiation have fewer clouds to reflect it back into space. In addition, the higher cloud tops trap more heat, increasing the size of the planet’s “greenhouse.”
As with any type of new study, there could be flaws. NASA scientist Kate Marvel points out that the cloud shifts could have been caused by two volcanoes that happened in the early ’80s at the beginning of the study period (Mount St. Helens and Mexico’s El Chicon). However, it shows a greater need for improved long-term observations by satellite and ground-based systems. “This study reminds us how poorly prepared we are for detecting signals that might portend more extreme climate changes than are presently anticipated,” researcher Bjorn Stevens tells the Guardian.

Apple Watch Ranked Highest in Smartwatch Customer Satisfaction by J.D. Power
Market research company J.D. Power has published the results of its 2016 Smartwatch Device Satisfaction Report, and Apple ranked highest among smartwatch manufacturers in customer satisfaction. Samsung finished in second place, although it was first in the related fitness band category.
The report measured overall satisfaction among 2,696 customers who purchased a smartwatch within the past year, including these factors listed in order of importance: ease of use, comfort, battery life, phone features, price, strength/durability, display size, styling/appearance, reliability, apps available, and customer service.
Apple earned a satisfaction score of 852 out of 1000, and a five-out-of-five Power Circle rating, compared to runner-up Samsung’s score of 842 and two-out-of-five Power Circle rating. Sony, Fitbit, and LG rounded off the top five smartwatch manufacturers with scores of 840, 839, and 827 respectively.

In June 2015, research panel Wristly said overall customer satisfaction with the Apple Watch was 97%, a statistic that Apple CEO Tim Cook cited during the company’s subsequent financial earnings call. Apple Watch’s customer satisfaction has dropped slightly since then, but it has remained consistently high overall.
J.D. Power and Associates, a division of McGraw Hill Financial, has conducted highly-regarded customer satisfaction surveys for automakers, airlines, technology brands, and more since 1968. iPhones and iPads have consistently topped J.D. Power’s smartphone and tablet customer satisfaction ratings in past years.

Sonos’ flagship NYC store hosts a massive wall of speakers
Sonos may be in the middle of a restructuring phase, but it isn’t wasting any time rolling out its plans for the near future. Today, the company unveiled its first-ever retail store in New York City. The 3,000 square foot space, located in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, features seven listening rooms designed to let consumers experience Sonos products firsthand. But the most outstanding decor is what you see above, known as The Wall of Sound. It’s a 17-by-24-foot installation made up of roughly 300 Sonos speakers, of which eight are plugged in and active.
According to Sonos Executive Creative Director, Dmitri Siegel, the store is intended to provide a home feel. For example, each listening room is laid out differently, giving you the sense you’re sitting in a study room, home theater or kitchen as you jam out to a Play:1, Play:3, Play:5 and Playbar. Most importantly, Siegel says, this is an opportunity to introduce new people to the Sonos brand, as well as let others experience these products in a different type of retail environment.
The Sonos store will open its doors to the public next week, on July 19th. Until then, here’s your first look at the
