Top 29 TV shows on Netflix, Amazon Video and Now TV you can’t watch anywhere else
We don’t need the Golden Globes, Emmys or other TV award ceremonies to tell us that streaming TV shows have shifted the balance of television broadcasting in the last couple of years. But the fact that major, online-only series, such as House of Cards, Arrested Development, Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle, are scooping gongs left right and centre proves that streaming services are becoming significant players in the entertainment business.
Not only do they provide thousands of programmes and movies to watch on demand, they also make their own TV programming these days, rivalling the major networks in the UK and US. What’s more, they are blinking good at it too.
Both Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video are jammed with a dizzying amount of original TV content, while Sky’s Now TV service is the only way to watch some the satellite broadcaster’s homemade and acquired series if you don’t have Sky itself.

That’s why we’ve decided to round up some of the best content available across the different major subscription services – partly to help you choose what water cooler show you’d like to brag about to your friends, and partly to give you an idea of which service to subscribe to if you don’t already.
We’ve focused mainly on the content available on the UK versions of each service, but in the case of Amazon and Netflix, much of it is available in the US too.

Top shows you can only watch on Netflix
Netflix was the first major streaming service to start an “Originals” program, where it funds and creates its own shows and movies. It also badges some programming as a Netflix Original for the UK market that might have appeared on US TV first. In most cases, it puts all episodes of a series ready for viewing from day one, as they become available. Occasionally though, such as with the new series of House of Cards and Better Call Saul, it will release them weekly.
Many if not all of the series listed are presented in 4K Ultra HD on compatible TVs or systems.
Netflix
House of Cards
Season four of House of Cards is the most recent addition to the Netflix line-up – it starts on 4 March.
Kevin Spacey once again steps into the leather brogues of President Frank J Underwood although this time his wife Claire (p0layed by the ever brilliant Robin Wright) can potentially throw so many spanners in the works, the metaphorical house of cards could collapse in spectacular fashion.
Netflix
Better Call Saul
The spin-off series proved in its first season that it can more than hold its own in comparison to parent show Breaking Bad, with Vince Gilligan showing there is far more to lawyer Jimmy McGill (soon to be renamed Saul Goodman) than we all originally thought.
Now the second season is progressing nicely on Netflix and we will find out more about his path to sleaziness by the time all 10 episodes have been made available.
Netflix
Arrested Development
Canned by Fox TV 10 years ago, Arrested Development made an incredible return thanks to Netflix and its Originals production scheme. Season four arrived on the streaming service in 2013 as an exclusive and remains one of the funniest, best series still available.
There will also be a fifth season debuting on Netflix later this year.
Netflix
Orange is the New Black
Prison-based comedy drama Orange is the New Black will be back for a fourth season in June, so you have time to catch up on the previous three.
Starring Taylor Schilling (Argo) as a 30-something sent to jail for drug smuggling, the show finely balances some dark humour with some shocking indictments of the US prison system and female prison life in general.
Netflix
Making a Murderer
Making a Murderer is a fascinating documentary series that is available to watch in its entirety on Netflix – all 10 60 minute episodes of it.
It follows the true crime case of Steven Avery, a man who spent 18 years in prison for a sexual assault he was later exonerated for after DNA evidence pointed towards another perpetrator. But after he filed a $36 million lawsuit for wrongful conviction, he was arrested for a murder that also seems suspicious.
Netflix / Marvel
Jessica Jones
Netflix continues its relationship with Marvel Comics with this original series based on one of the brand’s lesser-known characters.
Jessica Jones was a secondary superhero in the Marvel Universe previously, but is interesting enough to get her own show, which ties-in with others either available now or in development. Daredevil, for example, is also based in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York. Other heroes will appear the series too and former Doctor Who, David Tennant, co-stars as villain Kilgrave.
Netflix
Daredevil
In contrary to Jessica Jones, Daredevil is one of the best known heroes in the Marvel Universe and his TV series does him proud.
As we say above, it is set in the Hell’s Kitchen area of New York, where a blind Matt Murdock wields his own brand of justice on the criminal underworld. The second season is due to start on 18 March.
Netflix
Scream
Season one of the TV series based on the Scream franchise of movies was actually first shown on MTV in 2015 but now lives under the Netflix Original banner on the streaming service. Netflix has all 10 episodes of the teen slasher drama on its platform and with a second series already commissioned it’s a good opportunity to catch up.
Like the films, the show mixes horror and humour, although original fans might not like the new mask design used, which seems a little darker in tone to us.
Netflix
Narcos
All 10 episodes of Netflix original drama Narcos is available to view on the platform, and it is thoroughly recommended you catch up with the series that is becoming one of the new “have you seen?” topics around the water cooler.
It is based on the real-life escapades of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel, and the US Drug Enforcement Agencies efforts to take him down. A second series has been commissioned for release some time in 2016, so it’s worth swotting up on the first to get prepared.
Netflix
Marco Polo
With a commitment to a second season announced in January, Marco Polo’s first is well worth catching up with.
It is a dramatisation of the early historical adventures of traveller Polo, and his years with the court of Kublai Khan. It is stunningly shot, with amazing locations and a massive budget that you can clearly see on the screen.
Top shows you can only watch on Amazon Prime Instant Video
Like Netflix, Amazon has a healthy selection of homegrown shows available to Prime subscribers. You can also watch them at a cost without Prime, but it’s a lot cheaper to pay for a yearly subscription and get a load of other benefits thrown in – including access to the Amazon Music streaming service and free next-day – or same-day in some cases – delivery. A lot of its shows are also bought from US channels, such as Vikings which is screened on History in the States, or Starz’s Black Sails.
The acquired programmes do not tend to be presented in 4K, but the homemade shows are Ultra HD on compatible TVs and devices, such as the latest Amazon Fire TV.
The History Channel
Vikings
The fourth season of Vikings is well underway and if you haven’t caught up with the show yet, what the heck are you doing?
It is, quite simply, the best show about vikings ever made – being executive produced by a historian who knows a thing or two about the subject matter. And it’s proved so popular, its lead, Travis Fimmel, is also the star of the forthcoming World of Warcraft movie.
Amazon
Mad Dogs
Originally a four series TV show made by Sky for the UK, Amazon snapped up the US rights and is in the process of remaking it with a different set of actors. So while the British version starred John Simm, Philip Glenister, Marc Warren and ex-Take That drummer Max Beesley, the new remake features Steve Zahn, Romany Malco, Ben Chaplin and The Sopranos’ Michael Imperiolli.
The plot is similar though, with the four friends invited to Belize by an old friend – this time played by Billy Zane – and subsequently get caught up in a crime caper, with dark comedic twists.
Amazon
Black Sails
We’re now onto the third season of pirate drama Black Sails, which is available to watch on Amazon’s video service – freely if you have a Prime subscription.
It is based on the golden era of pirates and in similar fashion to shows like Boardwalk Empire and Vikings, intersperses real-life characters into the fictional narrative. And if you haven’t seen any episodes from the previous two seasons yet, Amazon has them all as it acquired the UK rights from Starz, which airs them all in America.
DC Entertainment
Lucifer
Starring British actor Tom Ellis, Lucifer is a loose adaptation of a DC comic series that focuses on the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar, after he gets bored ruling Hades and decides to help solve crimes on Earth instead.
The run is now available on Amazon. Let’s hope it fares better than Constantine, which was cancelled after the first series. Certainly the pilot shows promise and you should check that out at the very least.
Amazon
Mozart in the Jungle
Season two of this Amazon original series is available for those with a Prime subscription to watch at their leisure.
The comedic drama set in New York has been nominated for two Golden Globes, so you can be guaranteed that the 10 episodes now ready to be streamed will entertain all the way. Season one is also available on Amazon’s video service too.
Amazon
Red Oaks
An Amazon Studios original series, Red Oaks stars Submarine’s Craig Roberts as young tennis coach David, who works at the Red Oaks Country Club during a summer break.
It is set in the 1980s, so has a great style to it, and is a comedy drama with great pacing and witty gags. Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey plays David’s mother, if you’re looking to star spot.
Amazon
Transparent
The second season of the Golden Globe-winning comedy drama is available to watch on Amazon Video – included as part of a Prime subscription. And it’s already been nominated for even more awards in 2016.
Arrested Develoment’s Jeffrey Tambor once again puts in some stunning performances as transgender dad Maura and all 10 episodes are ready to watch from the off. You can also catch up with season one.
Amazon
Flesh and Bone
2010 movie Black Swan showed how ballet can be a great subject for drama and it is further evidenced in Flesh and Bone, an Amazon original series in the UK.
The entire first season is available now and it pulls no punches on the cut-throat nature of professional dance. It’s like Fame, only with less impromptu electric boogaloo sessions in the canteen.
Amazon
Into the Badlands
Martial arts series Into the Badlands has been snapped up as an Amazon original series in the UK, so you can watch it as part of a regular Amazon Prime subscription.
Daniel Wu plays Sunny who travels across a post-apocalyptic land on an epic journey with young boy M.K., who is highly sought after because of his mysterious powers. Basically, cue a load of cool looking fight sequences. Yay.
Amazon
The Man in the High Castle
Based on a book by Philip K Dick, The Man in the High Castle is a controversial, provocative Amazon original TV series that is set in an America that lost World War II. The Japanese therefore control part of the States, the Nazi’s another.
The series is executive produced by Ridley Scott, who returns to the works of Dick after having originally adapted Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep as BladeRunner many moons ago. The whole 10 episodes of season one are available to watch now.
USA Network
Mr Robot
Amazon Prime members can watch each of the 10 episodes of season one of one of the most talked-about TV shows out there.
It follows hacker Elliot Alderson and others in a hacktivist group as they attempt to take down one of the largest corporations in the world. Not everything goes to plan, however.
Top shows to watch on Sky’s Now TV
Now TV, the on demand service that’s part of the Sky family, is a different kettle of fish to Netflix and Amazon Video in that it presents shows also or previously available on Sky TV (and, in several cases, Virgin Media too). However, if you don’t have paid TV and want to opt for a Now TV Entertainment Pass instead, all of the following are available on the platform and many are still available on demand that are no longer shown on telly.
HBO
Vinyl
Vinyl basically does for the music business what Mad Men did for advertising and Boardwalk Empire did for prohibition racketeering.
Executive produced by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, with the latter also directing the two-hour opening pilot episode, it spatters its fictional 70s-based, drug-fuelled tale with representations of real-life rock stars.
Sky
Alan Partridge’s Mid Morning Matters
Aha! Alan Partridge is back and all six episodes of series 2 of Mid Morning Matters are available to view on Now TV after comedian Steve Coogan signed a deal with Sky.
Each episode is 30 minutes long and the format feels less forced this time around, with the previous series originally made for Fosters and first screened on the internet. The TV Alan is a better Alan, and we’re sure you’ll laugh as much as we did to every darn minute of it.
Sky
Stan Lee’s Lucky Man
Based on a comic book, Lucky Man was created by Stan Lee – he of Marvel Comics fame, who created many of the most famous of the brand’s superheroes and appears in cameos in all of the films.
James Nesbitt stars as the eponymous lucky man, a cop who is given an ancient bracelet that awards him outstanding luck. However, it comes at a cost. And you can catch up with the series on Now TV, er, now.
Sky
Wild Things
If you thought that the goings-on in Big Brother were strange, Wild Things is another reality come game show with a twist. This time the contestants have to dress up as woodland creatures and navigate through crazy rounds in order to scoop a £10,000 prize.
It won a Rose d’Or prize for best game show last year, so worth a watch for a giggle.
Universal Television
Blindspot
Currently broadcasting on NBC in the States, new crime drama Blindspot has come to the UK care of Sky Living and is therefore available to watch live and on demand on Now TV if you have an Entertainment Pass.
When a naked woman (played by Jaimie Alexander) is discovered lying in a bag in Times Square, New York, FBI agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) is called to investigate. Why? She just so happens to have his name tattooed on her back.
Warner Bros
Supergirl
DC Comics is rapidly catching up with Marvel in getting its comic book heroes onto TV and film, and the latest to make the transition is Supergirl. She joins The Flash, Green Arrow, John Constantine and the pre-Batman tales of Gotham City on telly and her adventures are looking good so far.
Episodes of the new, slick series are available to watch on Now TV, having first been broadcast on Sky 1, which include the impressive pilot.
Sky
You, Me And The Apocalypse
With so many American shows dominating this list, it’s nice to have a British comedy drama series in the mix.
Featuring a stellar cast that includes Matthew Baynton (The Wrong Mans, Horrible Histories), Pauline Quirke (Broadchurch, Birds of a Feather) and Rob Lowe (The West Wing, Parks and Recreation), the programme throws together a bunch of strangers as they huddle to watch the forthcoming end of the world. To hilarious effect, of course.
DC Entertainment
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow
Like Supergirl, this new superhero show ties into the rapidly expanding TV and film DC Universe.
Each series is planned to focus on a different character or group, with the first season featuring a time travelling plot as ex-Doctor Who assistant Arthur Darvill, as Rip Hunter, convinces an unlikely band of super-powered beings to travel with him into the past to stop an evil villain.
Undoubtedly, we will have missed off one of your favourite shows on the streaming platforms right now. That might be because we haven’t watched it personally yet, or hadn’t been tipped off. If there is a series absent that you think should be included, let us know in the comments below and we’ll check it out for a future update.
The best action cam photos in the world: Jaw, meet floor
It’s been many years since the first skier strapped a shoulder camera to his helmet and threw himself down a mountain. In that time action cameras have shrunk, flying has become cheaper and now everyone is sharing super shots.
From GoPro to Sony to Rollei, there are plenty of action camera options out there. Each can not only produce Full HD video but also high resolution photos. Generally they have wide angle lenses too so every scene looks even more wide-spanning and impressive.
Water-proofing and shock-proofing are other necessary improvements that most action cameras possess. This means stunning underwater photography, surfing shots, mountain biking photography and more. Not having to worry about damaging the expensive kit is a great motivator in pushing limits to help produce some of the most amazing photos.
Since most cameras offer an accompanying app it’s also possible to check footage and photos while on the scene. That means if it’s not perfect a new attempt can be made. The result is even better action camera photography than ever before.
We’ve been collecting great shots from around the interwebs that showcase the world from the unique perspective of an action cam. If these photos don’t make you want to go out to get extreme action shots of your own you’re beyond help.

Twitter is pushing Moments out to more countries
Twitter clearly believes that its Moments feature is going to help win back those users that won’t stop jilting it. The company has launched the service in Australia and, according to iPhone in Canada, will bring it to, er, Canada by April. If you’ve never bothered to click through (and let’s be honest, why would you) Moments aggregates breaking news events and memes that start on the site. The system is already available in the US, UK and Brazil, with plenty more locations surely to follow afterward. Which, we’re sure, will do plenty to help fix the social network’s increasingly toxic atmosphere, right?

EA says ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda’ not due till 2017
It’s been almost four years since players gathered a crew on the SSV Normandy SR-2 and saved the universe with Commander Shepard. A new Mass Effect game was originally scheduled for 2016, however an investor call with EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen suggests that Andromeda has now slipped into 2017. During the presentation, he was asked which titles the publisher will be releasing in its “FY (fiscal year) 2017,” to which he replied:
“We’ve got our Battlefield first-person shooter game coming in the third quarter, and our third-party title that Respawn, our partner, built — it’s called Titanfall, it’s the second title they’ve brought out under that brand. Both of those are first-person shooters and will be targeted at around both fast action-driven shooter market as well as the strategy driven market in that quarter.
We have all our sports games, we have our Mirror’s Edge runner game that’s first quarter, and then we have Mass Effect, which is a sci-fi action game, in our fourth quarter.”
That fiscal “fourth quarter” suggests the game will be coming out in the first part of 2017. That, in turn, implies a small delay from the “holiday 2016” window announced last June. It’s not all that surprising, given how little of Andromeda we’ve seen beyond some concept art and a brief teaser trailer. But if you were hoping to jump through some Mass Relays this Christmas, bad news — you’re going to have to wait a little longer.

Amazon Echo offers a choose-your-own-adventure ‘Batman’ story
Amazon’s Echo speaker can do everything from controlling your home to ordering pizza, but its latest trick is something special… at least, if you’re a fan of caped crusaders. As part of a team-up with DC Comics and Warner Bros., Amazon has launched a Choose Your Own Adventure-style interactive Batman story, “The Wayne Investigation.” The tale has you telling the Echo where you want to go as you search for clues following the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents. Depending on how well you do, the voice-guided game lasts anywhere between a brief 5 minutes (clearly, not the successful path) to a lengthy 40 minutes — at that point, it’s basically a radio drama for the internet era.
This is ultimately a promo for the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and you’ll invariably be presented with a chance to ask about showtimes for the movie. If you can get past the not-so-subtle plug, though, it’s proof that the Echo’s voice commands can be useful for much more than simple requests. Hopefully, it leads to more games and other experiences that don’t stop after a single response.

Apple vs. the FBI: Catch up on the iPhone encryption hearing
Apple and the FBI spent five-and-a-half hours (!) testifying before Congress yesterday over the ongoing San Bernardino iPhone saga. And while there weren’t any definitive conclusions, it was a chance for both sides to lay out their positions more clearly than ever before. Apple’s General Counsel, Bruce Sewell, went up against FBI director James Comey at the hearing, which was overseen by the House Judiciary Committee.
To recap, the FBI wants Apple to help it unlock an encrypted iPhone tied to the San Bernardino case by building a customized version of iOS. Apple, on the other hand, argues that doing so would compromise security of every iPhone moving forward.
You can watch the entire hearing above, and follow our liveblog commentary here. Engadget’s Roberto Baldwin summed up the day’s events:
FBI Director James Comey was grilled pretty hard by the committee. The majority of the representatives seemed to favor Congress working on a law that benefits law enforcement, security and privacy. Comey continued to note that the courts should figure this out.
While Comey continued to say that this is about single device in a single case, New York DA Cyrus Vance was more forthcoming that law enforcement is being hindered by encryption and that he would like the ability to open the one New York already has in its possession.
Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell raised Apple’s ongoing argument that this is not about a single phone. The company does not want to comply with the Department of Justice order to help circumvent the iPhone’s passcode. Representative Sensenbrenner asked Sewell if Apple had drafted legislation since it was not happy with the court’s motion, Sewell replied that it had not. The attorney later said that it was open to working on a bill once the current debate was finished.
Dr. Susan Landau testified on the security implications of Apple unlocking the phone and noted that other government agencies could already have the capability of unlocking the iPhone that the FBI doesn’t have. Landau said that the FBI should update its technical prowess instead of asking private companies to defeat their security.
And now for some highlights:
- FBI director James Comey wasn’t familiar with yesterday’s New York ruling, in which a judge said that the government can’t force Apple to unlock an iPhone using the All Writs Act (which the FBI is relying on for this case as well).
- When asked if the San Bernardino iPhone case would set precedent for future encryption cases, Comey said, “Sure, potentially.”
- The FBI was called out for a major screwup: By changing the San Bernardino iPhone’s password, it effectively stopped its iCloud backup. Apple has already provided Feds with data stored on iCloud — it’s not fully encrypted like data sitting on the phone.
“As I understand there was a mistake made in the 24 hours after the attack,” Comey said. “[That] made it impossible for the phone later to back up to the iCloud, but we’d still be in litigation either way because we wouldn’t have gotten everything off the phone.”
- A few members of the House Judiciary Committee also proved they had a decent understanding of technical topics. Congressman Darrel Issa (R-CA) took Comey and the FBI to task for not trying hard enough to crack the iPhone’s encryption on their own. When he asked if the FBI had asked Apple for its source code, or enlisted an expert to help, Comey didn’t have much to say.
“How can you come before this committee before a federal judge and demand that someone else invent something if you can’t answer the questions that your people have tried this,” Issa asked.
“I did not ask the questions you’re asking me here today,” Comey said. “I’m not sure I even fully understand the questions. I have reasonable confidence, in fact I have high confidence that all elements of the US government focused on this problem, and I’ve had great conversations with Apple.”
- Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said she worried about a world where nothing is private. She brought up Juniper Networks, who believed it had decent encryption capabilities, but who ended up being hacked due to a vulnerability. Lofgren also pointed out to Coney that Apple’s iCloud service was hacked, even though he also claimed it was pretty secure.
“I’ll close by saying I have all kinds of messaging apps that are encrypted, some designed in the US and some in other countries,” Lofgren said. “I wouldn’t do anything wrong on my phone, but I could use any of those apps to communicate security and there wouldn’t be anything the government could do to prevent that from occurring.”
- Apple General Counsel Bruce Sewell said Apple is being driven to make iPhones more secure after seeing security issues outside of the country. “The people that we’re competing with are on an equally aggressive path to defeat everything we put into the phone,” he said.
- Sewell also reiterated that Apple’s problem with following the FBI’s request isn’t time or money, instead “the burden is compromising the security of our customers.”
When asked why that would be a burden, he responded: “The answer is simple. This isn’t a one phone issue, and I don’t believe it can be contained to one phone.” That’s something Comey has already confirmed.
DxO ONE Smartphone Camera Adds Stand-Alone Mode, Cuts Base Price $100
DxO today announced a new “dramatically enhanced stand-alone experience” for its DxO ONE camera, granting users the ability to take pictures with the miniaturized device without needing to tether it to their smartphone. The DxO ONE’s OLED display helps its users line up a shot, which they can then capture easily thanks to the on-board two-stage shutter button.
The connected app allows for full customization of the camera’s various settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, metering, and white balance. When using stand-alone mode, the DxO ONE remembers the most recent settings of the app and preserves them in the pictures taken without a smartphone. As the company explains in its press release, “For example, if you prefer to capture portraits at f/1.8, the camera will always be ready at f/1.8 when you pull it out of your pocket.”
In addition to the stand-alone experience, the new DxO update brings a couple of other features to the camera:
Version 1.3 also introduces a host of other features including motion blur alert, and an elegant new way to dial in white balance, metering and focus modes, which can also be viewed as overlays in the viewfinder along with your iPhone battery level. Browsing photos is faster than ever, with the gallery now sorted in the same order as in iOS Photos.
You can be sure your images were successfully shared thanks to a new visual confirmation message, and you can set a preferred JPEG compression level for photos, and bitrate for videos. Of note, an innovative Message Center now provides a direct connection to DxO, with in-app access to current information designed to help you get the most out of your DxO ONE.
The company has also unbundled DxO FilmPack and DxO OpticsPro from the package, two pieces of software that gives users a more in-depth dive into picture editing, and will sell them separately. The removal of the software has dropped the price of the DxO One by $100, so those interested can buy the camera for $499 from the company’s online store.
The DxO ONE app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Amazon Fire Kids Edition and Fire 7-inch chargers deemed dangerous in UK recall
Amazon Fire Kids Edition and Fire 7-inch owners beware, your power adapters may be dangerous. Amazon has just issued a UK and Ireland wide recall.

‘Alan Wake’ teased once more in ‘Quantum Break’ easter egg
Oh boy, Remedy Entertainment sure does love to tease. The Finnish game developer has hinted once more at a return for Alan Wake through a fictional trailer buried inside its upcoming thriller Quantum Break. As Polygon reports, during an early chapter protagonist Jack Joyce visits Riverport University, and as the player you have the option to explore the campus before heading to the physics department. If you go inside a tent pitched by a protesting student you’ll be rewarded with a short video, shown on a flatscreen television, for a live-action adaptation of Alan Wake.
Based on Polygon’s account, it’s a typically cryptic glimpse at the novelist’s universe. We see Wake in a dense forest, eyes open, while a narrator explains that he’s been gone for five years. Two detectives are introduced, one of which is Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake, before Wake explains the power of “dark matter” and “dark energy” in our world. The trapped author is shown with a full beard, followed by a shot of Lake with the name “Alex Casey” scrawled underneath. Finally, Wake is seen standing over Casey’s body, a knife in his hand and a look of terror etched on his face.
The kicker? The word “Return” is shown as a title card at the end. Remedy recently applied to trademark “Alan Wake’s Return,” hinting at a possible sequel to the franchise. Return has also been referenced on multiple occasions in previous Alan Wake games; as a manuscript at the end of the second DLC chapter, and in the credits of the downloadable title Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. Was the trademark simply a reference to Quantum Break, and a possible series of in-game clips that appear throughout the campaign? Or does it suggest something more? Remedy hasn’t commented on the trademark, so for now we can only speculate.
What is clear, however, is Remedy’s intent to drum up interest in the Alan Wake franchise. Preview coverage has revealed a bevy of Alan Wake easter eggs dotted throughout Quantum Break’s time-stopping escapades. Every copy of the game also comes with the original Alan Wake adventure — bundled through the magic of Xbox One backwards compatibility — along with American Nightmare for those who decide to pre-order.
Early press coverage of Quantum Break has also revealed that the game won’t include its live-action TV episodes on the disc. Instead, you’ll have have to stream them to your Xbox One or PC. For those with a creaky internet connection, this could be a problem, but Remedy says it was necessary in order to make room for the rest of the game. Quantum Break has a branching narrative, so multiple versions of each episode were recorded. With so many paths — 40 total, according to narrative designer Greg Louden — it wasn’t possible to put everything in a physical package.
If you need a reminder, Quantum Break will be hitting store shelves for Xbox One and PC on April 5th. If nothing else, it’s seriously ambitious.
