BlackBerry Priv apps show up at Play Store ahead of phone launch

blackberry-priv-hands-on-1

I can already feel the buttons tapping and clicking below my finger tips. The BlackBerry Priv is now up for pre-order and we are expecting a November 6th release date, which is less than a couple weeks away. Many of us are excited about this phone, so it’s always good to see the company revealing new details. BlackBerry is getting ready for this epic launch and couldn’t wait to upload multiple stock apps to the Google Play Store.

This happens to be great news, as it suggests BlackBerry is following the right steps to become a successful Android smartphone manufacturer. Putting all your stock apps in the Google Play Store means you no longer have to wait for whole firmware updates just to get tiny application updates. The manufacturer can simply have them updated via the Play Store, something plenty of the larger manufacturers have adopted.

That’s really the only good news about this, though. Obviously, you can’t really download these apps into any other smartphone out there right now. All you can do is take a look at them. Those who want to do that can do so by clicking through the links below.

Just in case you have been living under a rock the past months, the Priv is BlackBerry’s first Android device. Yes, it will feature one of those acclaimed BlackBerry physical keyboards. But that is not the only enticing part; the phone happens to be very promising in plenty of other aspects.

Packed inside you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, microSD card support, an 18 MP rear-facing camera, a 2 MP front shooter and a hefty 3410 mAh battery.

Not bad, right? Are any of you signing up to buy one of these? Hopefully we get to play with all these apps soon enough!

What’s on your HDTV: ‘Halo 5,’ ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ and the World Series

army of darkness

This week’s releases are topped by the arrival of Halo 5: Guardians, complete with the usual midnight releases and excitement. We’ve been playing it for a few days and while the game is as well-put-together as ever, the real question is if Microsoft’s servers can hold up once gamers start filling them up later tonight. We’ll see — and good luck to all. On Tuesday night the World Series kicks off between the Kansas City Royals and New York Mets, while ESPN has a new 30 for 30 about John du Pont. CBS is premiering its new Supergirl series tonight, but we’re more excited about Saturday when Bruce Campbell comes back to TV in the role of Ash as Starz premieres Ash vs. Evil Dead. If you need a copy, there’s also a new Army of Darkness collector’s edition on Blu-ray. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed).

Xbox One’s big backwards compatibility update arrives November 12th

During tonight’s Halo 5: Guardians launch festivities, Xbox boss Phil Spencer just announced that the Xbox One will receive its Windows 10-based update on November 12th. That’s the one that will put a new UI on the console, as well as give everyone the ability to play certain Xbox 360 games. Some Xbox One owners in the preview program has been beta testing the new OS for a few months, and the experience has occasionally been a bit rough. Hopefully all that testing means the bugs are appropriately squished once this software rolls out wide in a couple of weeks. You can see the announcement in the video embedded after the break, or jump to the live broadcast as the Microsoft folks count down to midnight.

SXSW cancels online harassment panel, because of harassment

SXSWi design and logo

Online harassment is a real world problem, and you don’t need to look any further than a cancelled South by Southwest Interactive panel for more reasons why. Citing “numerous threats of violence” the SXSW planning team has annulled “Level Up: Overcoming Harassment in Games” at next March’s event according to an email sent to panelists that was obtained by Jezebel. What’s more, the festival has cancelled a pro-GamerGate panel, dubbed “SavePoint: A Discussion on the Gaming Community,” as well. An official statement from the organizers says that since announcing the two panels they’ve been inundated with threats of on-site violence and in the interest of keeping the marketplace of diverse people and diverse ideas (their words) safe, the best way to do that was simply not act as a venue for the discussions. “Maintaining civil and respectful dialogue within the big tent is more important than any particular session,” the statement reads.

Verizon asks FCC for permission to enable WiFi calling on its network

verizon new logoVerizon has formally asked the FCC for permission to start enabling WiFi calling for handsets on its network, making it the second carrier to officially do so. AT&T was the first, applying for permission on October 6th after calling out Sprint and T-Mobile for skipping the FCC’s approval process.

Verizon will very likely get permission for this, but it’ll be awhile before we start to see any phones actually utilize the feature. Software updates will have to enable WiFi calling, and you know Verizon isn’t particularly quick about updating their Android smartphones.

Apple Shares New ‘Half Court’ Ad Showing Off Live Photos on iPhone 6s

Just a day after debuting three new iPhone 6s ads focused on the iPhone’s camera and wireless “Hey Siri” functionality, Apple has shared a new short 15-second ad in the same series, this time focusing on Live Photos.

In the “Half Court” ad, the iPhone 6s is used to capture a half-court shot made by Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, which is then played back again.

The iPhone 6s is here, and the only thing that’s changed with the camera is everything. Because now you can shoot amazing Live Photos. Bringing every moment, big or small, to life with just a touch.

Yesterday’s longer camera-focused iPhone 6s ad also featured a shot by Stephen Curry and both ads come just ahead of the start of the 2015-2016 NBA Regular season. The two ads may be featured during the Cavaliers/Bulls and Pelicans/Golden State Warriors games, set to be broadcast on TNT.

Over the course of the last several weeks, Apple has launched more than five videos to market the iPhone 6s, which have focused on 3D Touch, Siri, and the new camera features in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Apple has also released a number of Apple Watch ads highlighting Apple Music, Apple Pay, Siri, and more.

Judge dismisses Wikimedia case against NSA as ‘hypothetical’

A computer workstation bears the Nationa

Remember that lawsuit the Wikimedia Foundation filed against the NSA earlier this year? It’s not moving forward: The district judge presiding over the case has dismissed the lawsuit because the plaintiffs’ allegations are based on “suppositions and speculation with no basis in fact.” Specifically, District Judge TS Ellis III takes issue with Wikimedia’s description of how the NSA’s Upstream surveillance program works, which speculates on how the program “must” operate to satisfy the government’s “stated goals,” but provides no factual data to verify said claims.
