Mexico sees the launch of AT&T’s 4G LTE network in six cities

att_4g_lte_mexico

By the end of the year, AT&T would like to cover 40 million people in Mexico with its 4G LTE network. Customers of Iusacell and Nextel Mexico in six cities throughout the country have access starting today.

The following are the cities where AT&T’s 4G LTE network is accessible:

  • Atlacomulco, Estado de México
  • Cuernavaca, Morelos
  • Cuautla, Morelos
  • Pachuca, Hidalgo
  • Tepeji, Hidalgo
  • Tulancingo, Hidalgo

AT&T intends to have 75 million people covered by the end of 2016 and 100 million by the end of 2018.

AT&T 4G LTE Launches in Mexico

Customers in the first six cities can unleash new possibilities with next-generation, high-speed mobile internet

As part of AT&T’s mission to make the next-generation mobile internet available to 40 million people in Mexico by the end of 2015, Iusacell and Nextel Mexico customers in six cities can now surf, download and connect at faster speeds with the new AT&T 4G LTE network.

The new AT&T 4G LTE network automatically frees customers for new possibilities with the AT&T Unidos wireless plans, which launched in August and are available at Iusacell, Nextel Mexico and Unefon points of sale throughout Mexico. These new plans give customers greater benefits with more megas, thousands of minutes and messages, unlimited social media and Prip® radio, and the option of extending those benefits when travelling to the United States and Canada.

“The mobile internet in the United States created an engine of economic growth, and we believe it will do the same here in Mexico,” said Thaddeus Arroyo, Chief Executive Officer of AT&T in Mexico. “This next-generation, high-speed mobile network empowers consumers and businesses to reach a new potential as they explore, discover and try new things.”

AT&T 4G LTE is now available in the following cities:

  • Atlacomulco, Estado de México
  • Cuernavaca, Morelos
  • Cuautla, Morelos
  • Pachuca, Hidalgo
  • Tepeji, Hidalgo
  • Tulancingo, Hidalgo

AT&T will continue to extend its 4G LTE network throughout Mexico, with plans to cover 100 million people by the end of 2018. The company is moving quickly to reach this plan. AT&T expects to cover 75 million people, nearly two-thirds of the population in Mexico, by the end of 2016.

As part of the first phase to transform the network experience for customers in Mexico, Iusacell and Nextel customers in the first six cities can now enjoy the following benefits:

Faster speeds. LTE technology is capable of delivering up to 6x faster speeds than a 3G mobile network. Customers with compatible devices can stream, download, upload and play games faster than ever before.

Faster response time. LTE technology offers lower latency which refers to the processing time it takes to move data through a network, such as how long it takes to start downloading a webpage or file once you’ve sent the request. Lower latency helps to improve services like mobile gaming and two-way video calling.

Devices and applications. AT&T has a wide variety of 4G LTE devices in its robust portfolio. And with the new AT&T 4G LTE network, customers with compatible devices will be able to download videos and music faster, video chat with greater ease and connect to their favorite apps without skipping a beat.

Platform for innovation and enhanced business. 4G LTE has the potential to revolutionize the mobile experience through powerful innovation that can expand and change how we work and live.

GLAAD’s Spirit Day app updated for October 15 observance

spirit_day_2015_app_icon

Annually in mid-October, Spirit Day is held to support anti-bullying against youth of the LGBT community. People, largely made of students, wear purple to highlight Spirit Day and speak out against bullying. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) actually has a now-refreshed app to help people share their support for this year’s observance taking place on October 15. The ‘Go Purple for #SpiritDay’ app turns profile pictures purple to celebrate Spirit Day, has quick links to sharing on social media, provides anti-bully resources, and includes a link to donate to GLAAD.

Tesla batteries will help power California office buildings

Tesla Powerpack

Tesla is about to prove that its energy storage batteries aren’t just meant for saving money (and possibly, the environment) at home. The Irvine Company plans to outfit office buildings across California with Tesla battery farms that, in an initial phase, will both reduce electricity demand at peak hours and give Southern California Edison up to 10 megawatts of reserve power. That’s enough to light up 10,000 homes, folks. Up to 24 buildings in Irvine will get the upgrade in this first wave, and there are hints of more in the long run.

This is just one deal in a very large state, and Tesla may have a fight ahead as it competes with energy storage rivals like Bloom Energy. Even so, it suggests that Elon Musk and crew could play a significant role in modernizing California’s power grid and hastening the state’s shift to clean energy sources. If buildings can already store the energy they don’t use and feed some of it back to the grid, it’s that much easier for building owners and utilities to switch to green tech that makes better use of batteries.

Motorola Kinzie will be the Verizon DROID Turbo 2 with flagship hardware

DROID_Turbo_Back_Slanted_2_Camera_Motorola_Logo_TAWe’ve been hearing plenty of rumors about Motorola and Verizon’s flagship DROID phone for the 2015 holiday season, and some new details have surfaced that clarify just about everything you’ll need to know about the phone.

The Motorola Kinzie appeared in benchmarks earlier this year, hinting at something bigger and better than the DROID Turbo, and just a few weeks ago some promotional material for the DROID Turbo 2 leaked, meaning something is coming sooner rather than later. Now it turns out the Motorola Kinzie is the DROID Turbo 2, and it’s slated for a Verizon launch relatively soon.

As far as hardware goes, the Turbo 2 will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 CPU with 3 GB of RAM underneath a QHD 5.5-inch display. We’re still expecting a 20 megapixel rear camera, a 5 megapixel front camera, and Turbo Charging with an enormous battery life.

October 28th marks the DROID Turbo’s first birthday, so hopefully we’ll see something about its successor by the end of this month.

Google releases improved Cardboard SDK and adds Street View

Inside Tokyo Game Show 2015

Google announced today that its Cardboard VR app is now available in 100 countries for both iOS and Android. The company also stated that the app’s software development kit has been improved. According to the Google Developer’s Blog, the new SDK now features better drift control thanks to “a major overhaul of the sensor fusion algorithms that integrate the signals from the gyroscope and accelerometer.” This should diminish the amount of “drift” wherein the displayed images continue to move even after your head has stopped turning.

The SDK is also now compatible with the Unity programming language which enables the app to work with both Metal rendering on iOS as well as Android’s multi-threaded rendering system. Most exciting, however, is the news that Cardboard now works with Street View. Users can now immersively explore most anywhere in the world simply by sliding on a Cardboard-compatible headset.

The new ‘Back to the Future’ vinyl box set is a work of art

The so-called “future day” — the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown forward in time to in Back to the Future Part II — is fast approaching. As such, the movie and music memorabilia masters at Mondo have put together a truly fitting record collection: The score for all three Back to the Future films will be available in full on vinyl for the first time. You can either pick up each movie individually as a two-record set for $35 each, or you can get all six records in an amazingly creative and beautiful box set. The full box set will run you $105. The individual album versions feature new artwork by Matt Taylor, who previously created screen-print Back to the Future posters for Mondo, while the box set artwork and design was done by DKNG Studios. Slideshow-328124

There’s something delightfully ironic about a movie that celebrates high technology and the future having its soundtrack released on such an old-school media format — it’s a shame there’s no reel-to-reel tape version available. But on the other hand, given the mid-’80s release of the first film, a vinyl release is entirely fitting. And those huge album covers are all the better to enjoy this wonderful artwork on. And the music has been remastered by composer Alan Silvestri specifically for this vinyl from the original recording tapes. If you’re interested in getting your hands on this release, it’ll go on sale on October 21st at an as-yet undisclosed time — keep an eye on the Mondo Twitter feed for the exact on-sale time.

The battle over backdoor government data access isn’t over

Police officers breaking down doors

Tech companies are more than a little happy that the US won’t require backdoor data access, but you might not want to join in the celebrations just yet. Firms talking to Bloomberg say it’s a “big win” that could help privacy, but it might not stop a cycle where tech firms like Apple and Google push for tougher data safeguards in response to stronger calls for access. Remember, the US was making similar requests with the short-lived Clipper chip 20 years ago — it may be just a matter of time before another administration decides that its security concerns override personal privacy.

Not that those same companies expect a backdoor law to take effect. Executives reportedly believe that the government is afraid of ruining exports by demanding the power to break publicly available encryption. After all, Edward Snowden’s NSA leaks have already lead to American firms losing foreign contracts over surveillance fears. There may not be much point to pressing for greater control if more countries refuse to adopt US-made software.

Yes, Pepsi is launching smartphones in China

MTV VMA Kick Off Concert In Miami

In today’s edition of baffling corporate branding decisions, Pepsi has confirmed plans to launch smartphones and a line of accessories in China in the coming months, Reuters reports. The company made it clear that it won’t be manufacturing the phones, instead it’ll be licensing its brand to a partner (there’s really no shortage of phone makers in China). While Pepsi isn’t divulging more details yet, Mobipicker reports via Chinese blogs that one of the phones is called the Pepsi P1. For the most part, it looks like an unremarkable mid-range Android phablet with a 5.5-inch screen, 1.7 Ghz CPU and 16GB of storage. But hey, at least it sports some nifty Pepsi logo bling. The P1 will reportedly retail for around $200 in China, and we’ll likely hear official details on October 20. I wouldn’t expect this to hit the US or Europe, but don’t be surprised if Coca-Cola follows suit. (As Engadget’s Chris Velazco points out, this phone isn’t that crazy, as it’s coming from the company that gave us Pepsi-Man.)

Waze says the United States offers one of the best driving experiences in the world

Traffic Shutterstock

Google-owned navigation service Waze has just released an informative series of infographics that list the best and worst places to drive in the world. Waze evaluated the driving experience of about 50 million users of the service in 32 countries and 167 metro areas, rating their experiences on a scale from satisfying (10) to miserable (1). The infographics take into account traffic levels, road quality, driver safety based on accidents and even how easy it is to find a gas station.

Despite the fact that Netherlands is one of the most densely-populated areas in the world, the country outranked all the other countries with the least amount of traffic. What’s even more surprising is that the United States, as if we’re living in some sort of alternate reality, scored an impressive 7.2 on Waze’s scale, achieving the title as the third-best place to drive in the world. After personally driving in some of the most populated cities in the U.S., I find this a little hard to believe.

On the flip side, if given the chance, you probably won’t want to drive in El Salvador, Guatemala or Venezuela anytime soon. These countries scored an unfortunate 2.1, 3.0 and 3.1 on Waze’s scale, respectively. The reason for the low scores, according to Waze, is due to “frequency and severity of traffic jams, lack of driver services, and poor road infrastructure.”

Be sure to check out the full infographic below for more details.
