The Miix 700 is Lenovo’s Surface killer

Lenovo has arguably done more than any other PC maker to blur the line between tablets and laptops — but its new Ideapad Miix 700 convertible tablet is clearly aimed at one particular competitor: Microsoft’s Surface. Like that machine, the Miix 700 sports a kickstand with a high-tech hinge; it’s a pretty decent tablet on its own; and it has a well-built keyboard accessory that snaps on with a strong magnet. Even a Lenovo rep acknowledged that it was “inspired” by the Surface. But just because it looks familiar doesn’t mean it’s not a worthy convertible entry. Lenovo fans will likely appreciate the Miix 700’s solid keyboard implementation, which feels practically indistinguishable from some of the company’s laptop keyboards (and far more comfortable than the Surface Type cover), as well as the company’s more subdued style. The Miix 700 starts at $699 and will start shipping in November. Slideshow-316577

The Miix 700 packs in up to an Intel Core M7 processor, which puts it more in line with the low-powered Surface 3 than the beefy Surface Pro 3. You can still include up to 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD if you need a bit more speed and space, though. Its 12-inch screen runs at 2160 by 1440 pixels, a tad sharper than plain old 1080, and it weighs 1.7 pounds with the keyboard attached. There are also 5 megapixel front and rear cameras, and you also have the option of plugging in Intel’s RealSense 3D camera, which will let you log into Windows 10 using just your face. That’s something no Surface tablet does yet — but you can be sure Microsoft will include something similar in its next refresh (which is expected to hit in a few months).

In my short hands-on time with the Miix 700, it felt like a solid, if somewhat familiar, device. Its kickstand lays flat on its back and takes a bit of effort to pull out, and it can expand almost to around 160 degrees. The big difference from the Surface? Its hinges are prominently displayed on the Miix 700’s back, rather than being hidden under the hinge. It uses two of the same “watchband” hinges we saw on the Yoga Pro 3, a design that we ended up liking last year. I didn’t have a chance to hold the Miix 700 on my lap, but judging from the sturdiness of the keyboard and its hinge design, I expect it to be about as “lappable” as the last few Surface tablets.

More on that keyboard accessory: I can’t stress enough how great it feels. Lenovo is no stranger to quality keyboards, after all. But it’s still surprising to see it pull off a very usable keyboard on a tablet cover. It also folds up slightly onto the tablet’s screen to give the keys a bit of an angle (a design choice that Microsoft also used to stabilize its keyboard).

Still, as good as the Miix 700 looks and feels, you wouldn’t be blamed for wondering why it even exists. Lenovo has explored other detachable tablet concepts, like the Miix 2, and it’s also spent plenty of time honing its hinge technology for its many Yoga convertibles. It’s also still the largest global PC vendor, with around 20 percent of the market. One possible reason is that it may feel threatened by the growth of the Surface lineup, which would also explain why it lifted so many design choices from Microsoft. If anything, Microsoft should take it as a compliment.

Lenovo’s new PCs include a $189 Windows laptop

Today marks the start of IFA, Europe’s largest consumer tech show, and Lenovo is kicking things off with a slew of product announcements. In addition to some new ThinkPad Yogas, the company just unveiled a handful of laptops in a variety of sizes and price ranges. Perhaps the most interesting is the Ideapad 100S, an 11.6-inch Windows machine that will retail for just $189. (There will also be a 14-inch version for $259). This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a sub-$200 notebook, but it’s interesting to see Lenovo, one of the world’s biggest PC makers, enter the super-cheap-laptop fray. Like other machines in this class, the 100S cuts corners with a low-powered processor (an Intel Celeron N3050), minimal RAM (2GB) and little on-board storage (up to 32GB). Essentially, it’s the closest thing to the Windows equivalent of a Chromebook. Speaking of the sort, Lenovo will also sell a Chrome OS version of the 100S, priced at $179. (That, too, is pretty cheap compared to the competition.)Slideshow-316531Slideshow-316532

Before I give you the rundown on the other laptops, this would be a good time to clarify that in addition to unveiling new hardware, Lenovo also just switched up its product-naming scheme, and even updated its logo. In brief: PCs will now fall into “good, better, best, bester” buckets, with the 100 series denoting budget machines like the $189 laptop I just told you about. The 300 and 500 series represent the mid range, and the “700” moniker is reserved for high-end stuff. With me so far? Well, there will be some notebooks that have an “S” appended to the end. No, that’s not for speed — this isn’t the iPhone here; it’s for slimness. That brings me to today’s lineup, which includes mid-range machines like the Ideapad 300 and 500, which are accompanied by the lighter 300S and the 500S. From there, you can get each in various screen sizes, ranging from 13 to 15 inches, which explains why you’ll see product names like 300s-14.Slideshow-316533

In any case, I promise I’m done droning on about naming schemes, and I won’t bore you with specs either: All you need to know for now is that Lenovo will be using Intel’s recently announced sixth-gen Intel Core processors (and in rare cases, AMD). Everything will ship next month, with starting prices running the gamut from $249 to $659.Slideshow-316534

Barclays helps put contactless payments in a £150 jacket

Want a stylish way to make contactless payments in the UK, but can’t afford an Apple Watch? Scottish knitwear brand Lyle & Scott has developed a jacket with Barclays’ bPay technology in the cuff. For £150, you’ll get a snazzy coat and the ability to make payments (now up to £30) by waving your hand over supported readers. Barclays has been pushing mobile payments for some time, but its latest hardware isn’t particularly fashionable. There’s a sticker you can slap on your phone, a key fob or a black wristband that offers only one of the benefits associated with fully featured wearables. With Lyle & Scott’s “Contactless Jacket,” however, the chip is always out of sight — the downside being, of course, that you always have to wear it to make a payment. If you’re smitten with the idea of garment-based payments, but don’t like Lyle & Scott’s sense of fashion, you could always sew a bPay sticker into your existing outwear. Sure beats shelling out £150 for a new jacket..

lenovo_chromebook_100s_full_TA

Although the company has released just three Chromebooks since early 2013, Lenovo has quietly become one of the top Chromebook manufacturers. Its devices running Chrome OS are performing very well with consumers from education and business sectors. And this fall Lenovo is going to release another Chromebook that is very affordable and pretty capable.

lenovo_chromebook_100s_keyboard_TA

The Chromebook 100S is your run-of-the-mill Chromebook with an 11.6-inch (1366×768 display) and “all-day” battery life, measuring 0.78in thick and weighing 2.6lbs. Lenovo will allow certain areas of the Chromebook 100S to be upgraded, but the company has yet to detail what the base options are. So we know that this Chromebook will have up to an Intel Celeron N2840 processor, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage (with an additional 100GB coming from Google Drive).

This wouldn’t be a Lenovo devices without a healthy amount of ports; therefore, the Chromebook 100S features one USB 2.0 port, one USB 3.0 port, a 4-in-1 card reader, an audio jack, and an HDMI port.

Lenovo plans to begin selling the Chromebook 100S to consumers in North America in October for $179.

Gigaset ME, ME Pure and ME Pro announced – great specs, sleek design and fair prices

gigaset-me

Smartphones made by little known manufacturers are usually not worth the risk, but once in a blue moon an outstanding one will appear. Today we are taking a look at three of them – the Gigaset ME, ME Pure and ME Pro. This company may be a complete stranger to most of us, but they have built some phones that can easily compete with the biggest players in the industry.

The ME series touts a sleek design, powerful specs and a fair (though not amazing) prices. Their plan is to build an experience with no compromises. Did they achieve it? Let’s look into the details and find out!

Gigaset ME

We can say the Gigaset ME is the star player here. It’s a powerful phone, but doesn’t go too far. Its sleek body is gorgeous, as it is put together with premium materials like stainless steel, aluminum alloy and Corning Gorilla Glass. It looks good and feels even better.

Inside you will find a 5-inch 1080p display, a powerful 1.8 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, an Adreno 430 GPU, 32 GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot (supports up to 128 GB), a 16 MP rear camera, an 8 MP front shooter, a 3000 mAh battery and a USB Type-C port. It also has a heart rate scanner, a pedometer, a UV sensor and a fingerprint reader. This phone is missing nothing!

Gigaset ME Pure

The ME Pure is not as impressive, but it should be an enticing deal for those looking to get a more affordable handset. It’s pretty much the same, except for a few downgrades. It only comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The processor was also downgraded to a Snapdragon 615, and it sports a lower resolution 13 MP rear camera. But maybe you will be fine with those sacrifices when you realize battery life is better, as this phone has 3320 mAh of juice.

Gigaset ME Pure (Left) / Gigaset ME Pro (right)

Gigaset ME Pro

Now, let’s talk about the big guy in the room. The Gigaset ME Pro is one hell of a smartphone. Not only is it bigger at 5.5 inches, but this thing comes with a whopping 5 GB of RAM and a 4000 mAh battery. That is aside from all the components you can also find in the regular ME, including the Snapdragon 810 chipset.

Price and availability

Want in? Sadly, we can’t get all these smartphones right off the bat, or everywhere. The Gigaset ME is available in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Turkey, Poland and Spain for 469 Euros. Meanwhile the ME Pure and ME Pro will launch later this year at 349 Euros and 549 Euros, relatively.

Are you buying? I woulddefinitely consider that Gigaset ME Pro! The only issue is the uncertainty of this phone ever making it to the USA. Would you want it to?

Intel Unveils Full Lineup of Skylake Processors for Notebooks and Desktops, Early 2016 Likely for Most Macs

Intel has released detailed information about its upcoming Skylake processors for notebooks and desktops ahead of IFA 2015 in Berlin (via Ars Technica). The sixth-generation chips will deliver CPU and GPU performance improvements and longer battery life, and are likely to power future MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac models released over the next year.

macbook_pro_15_imac_27
Retina MacBook

Intel’s new lineup of Core M processors appropriate for the 12-inch Retina MacBook will provide up to 10 hours of battery life, between 10%-20% faster CPU performance and up to 40% faster graphics compared to equivalent Broadwell chips.

CPU World accurately shared Core m3, Core m5 and Core m7 specifications last week, with all three families of chips including Intel HD 515 graphics, 4MB of L3 cache and 4.5 watt thermal design power (TDP).

Intel Skylake Core M MacBook
The low-end Core m3 6Y30 replaces the Core M-5Y31 and is likely suited for the base model 12-inch MacBook sold for $1,299. The mid-tier Core m5 6Y54 and Core m5 6Y57 replace the Core M-5Y51 on the high-end 12-inch MacBook sold for $1,599, while the high-end Core m7 6Y75 replaces the Core M-5Y71 for top-of-the-line 12-inch MacBook custom configurations.

Core M processors have configurable TDPs, allowing for performance and heat output to be adjusted. Core m3, m5 and m7 chips can be run at 3.5-3.8 watts or be increased to 7 watts to allow for higher CPU clock speeds. For the current 12-inch MacBook, Apple boosted the 900 MHz 5Y31 chip to 1.1 GHz, 1.1 GHz 5Y51 chip to 1.2 GHz and 1.2 GHz 5Y71 chip to 1.3 GHz.

Ars Technica notes that Core M processors should be available to Apple and other PC makers now, meaning that Core m3, m5 and m7-powered notebooks could begin shipping within the next few months. However, given that the 12-inch MacBook just launched in April, it remains uncertain if Apple is willing to release updated models this soon or hold off until 2016.

Polaroid’s latest instamatic doesn’t use ink to print photos

Cubes, unwieldy squares, bulky cameras of yore. Regardless of form factor, when the Polaroid name is on a camera it means you’re getting instant photos. With the company’s latest shooter, the Snap, you’re getting what looks like a pocketable device that uses proprietary tech to print photos using zero ink. Instead, the ZINK (get it?) paper you load in the 10MP pictograph box uses heat to activate color crystals and reproduce your 2-inch by 3-inch masterpiece. And of course, since this is camera made in 2015 there’s a selfie timer and filter presets (color, black and white, vintage) in addition to a Micro SD card slot. Interested? All it takes is $99 to sate your curiosity sometime later this year.

HTC books event for September 6th; will it announce the HTC One A9?

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Just the other day we heard about the rumoured HTC device called the HTC One A9 – the “A” stands for “Aero”. As if right on cue, HTC has booked an event for September 6th to announce a new device – its invite shows a smartphone’s silhouette amongst nebula-like (galaxy?) clouds accompanied by the Chinese words “Meng Yao”. A literal translation of this comes up with “superior handsomeness” which is a big call, but give HTC’s recent financial problems, going big is something that they are going to have to do.

HTC One A9Whether or not the One A9, or whatever the device is called, lives up to its tagline, it must tick all the boxes if it has any hopes of going up against Samsung and even Apple who will announce its new iPhones just a few days after HTC’s event. Rumours say that the One A9 will have a Quad HD display, a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor, 4GB RAM and an all-metal body – that all sounding good so far, but we all know hardware is just half the battle. Let’s see what HTC shows up with on the 6th.

What do you think about HTC’s chances of releasing a knock-out flagship smartphone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

MSI dresses up its gaming lineup with Skylake

GT72 with Skylake

With Intel’s new Skylake processor inbound, it was only natural that gaming notebook manufacturers would jump on board to offer this latest boost to their machines. MSI is no exception, kitting out a few of their existing machines with the 6th-generation processor. If the promise of a CPU that can be overclocked 30 percent higher isn’t enough to entice you, there are plenty of other new goodies packed into the lineup that might be worth the ding to your bank account. Slideshow-316463 Slideshow-316492

The machines getting a boost include the heavy-hitting GT72 Dominator Pro G, the thin and light GS70 Stealth and GS60 Ghost, and the GE62 and GE72 Apache Pro. The number four features prominently in some of the upgrades: the new lineup will support Super RAID 4 for the SSD drives, and the RAM is DDR4 (with a speed increase of up to 40 percent). Elsewhere, the graphics cards have been bumped to the newer GeForce GTX 980M or 970M.

But MSI isn’t just trying to make their machines faster; the company’s trying to make your gaming experience objectively better as well. The displays are using sRGB for more vibrant colors and they support wide 178 degree viewing angles. The sound is clearer and more immersive, thanks to the included Nahimic audio software. Nahimic got its start in aircraft simulators used by the French army, though it’ll probably do just fine in non-sim games as well — especially paired with the new support for hi-res audio via FLAC.

The chassis have gotten a boost, too. While it isn’t anything as crazy as the full-blown mechanical keyboard on the GT80 Titan, the other G Series machines sport SteelSeries keyboards with improved backlighting, so whatever crazy lighting scheme you set up will be brighter without hurting your eyes. But the biggest change on the outside is probably the addition of SuperPort to the GT72 and GS60. You’ll get power, USB 3.1 and even video output to two 4K 60Hz displays if the built-in panel isn’t cutting it for you. And, while not every MSI machine is getting a SuperPort, you can still expect to see Type-C implemented in some manner across the lineup.

MSI isn’t divulging pricing just yet, but the machines are already available in Asia. Stateside, we’ll see these new gussied-up models on September 27th.

Google App update to v5.2.33 adds new logo, icon and Google Now format

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Google is just undergoing all the changes these days. After becoming part of Alphabet, Google has today updated its iconic logo, which will undoubtedly mean a change for all the apps that have used Google’s now outgoing logo. The first app to get this is the Google App, which now rocks a new logo, icon and slightly different format to the Google Now menu. The Google App update to v5.2.33 even changes the appearance of the Google Now pop-up bubble when you swipe up on the home button. Check out a few screenshots below:

Google App update

Google App update

This will be the biggest revamp to the Google App in some time now and we’re almost impressed that Google has managed to keep it a secret in all of its Developer Previews. You get the feeling that the timing of this is all too convenient with Android Marshmallow right around the corner, but it’s great to be witness to all this activity as it happens.

If getting your hands on the new update is what you’re here for, there are two versions available, one for Android 4.1+ and one for Android 4.4+ – make sure you download the right one for your device:
