Google releases factory images for new Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 update

google new logo

Yesterday, T-Mobile announced a series of OTA’s for the Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. The sole purpose of these updates are to fix a number of security and bug-related issues that were unearthed in the Android operating system. Now, Google has released the factory images for the upgrades, which are available to download and install directly from the search engine giant’s Developer Platform.

It’s important to bear in mind that these factory images aren’t your standard JPG or PNG. They are in fact images, which allow you to directly update and wipe your device – effectively installing the operating system from scratch. The images are also particularly useful if you have previously tinkered around with the ROM on your device and need an easy route back to the stock version of Android.

If you want to get your hands on the upgrade, hit the source link below, then locate the firmware version entitled LMY48M.

Amazon takes down listing of Fire Phone

amazon-accounts-hackedIt seems that Amazon has stopped production of its Fire Phone. The smartphone is currently listed as “unavailable” on the company’s website and includes a side note that says it doesn’t know when or if the item will be back in stock. It looks like this could be the end of the road for the device.

Amazon was devastated with the sales of its Fire Phone and has decided to move on. It doesn’t look like Amazon will be releasing another Fire Phone in the future, however recent reports have suggested a budget tablet is in the works. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard any details since the initial rumor.

During its time to shine, the Fire Phone only managed to sell about 13,000 devices. Which was far off the company’s predictions. If you happen to be still interested in buying one, you’ll have to try an snag one on Ebay when they pop up.

Recently, one of Amazon’s chief executives stated the company was laying off dozens of employees. He/she also gave us a brief overview of the company’s upcoming plans for the remainder of 2015 year. We’ll keep a close eye on any news associated with the company’s plans moving forward.

Xiaomi will announce the Mi 4c on Tuesday, September 22

xiaomi_logo_wall

According to a report, Xiaomi is preparing to announce it latest smartphone, the Mi 4c, on Tuesday, September 22. The handset is expected to launch in China first for CNY 1,300 ($200), followed by an International release between October and November. If the device proves to be a hit in these regions, it could make an appearance in the North America in  the very near future.

Recent speculation suggest that the Mi 4c is set to pack a 5-inch Full HD display, a Snapdragon 808 System-on-Chip (SoC), 2GB of RAM, 16GB of non-expandable storage, an Adreno 418 GPU, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 5-megapixel selfie shooter, dual-SIM compatibility, LTE connectivity and a 3,100mAh battery.

Unfortunately, as with all leaks and rumors, we have to take this information with a large pinch of salt until Xiaomi provides us with some solid evidence with regards to what it has in store for the Mi 4c, but, thankfully, it doesn’t look like we’ll have too much longer to wait.

Pressing issues: Our first look at the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus

So those new iPhones — the 6s and 6s Plus — took their tour of the stage here in San Francisco and are being prepped for a worldwide launch on September 25. Now the question is whether or not all the new goodies Apple crammed inside them make these updated phones worth some more of our collective dollars. The (very) early answer? Yes, but it’ll take time for these things to really shine.Slideshow-318508

At some point while I was snapping photos of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, I started feeling a little silly — these things look damned-near identical to the iPhones we already have. That notion starts to evaporate when you pick them up. The aesthetic might be identical, but there’s just a little extra heft around the phones’ waists and what feels like a few more grams baked into their bodies. Most of you won’t even notice the shift, but it’s there and it gives the phones a sense of density that the 6 and 6 Plus sorely missed.

Of course, all of the big changes have taken place inside those aluminum bodies. These things are tricked out with new A9 chipsets, a fact that isn’t all that apparent when you pick one up and start fiddling with it. The current generation iPhones aren’t exactly slow, and I didn’t notice much gap in performance while swiping through homescreens and pulling down the notifications blind like a frenzied nutbar. What makes this new batch of devices feel like such a step forward from the original 6 twins is the addition of 3D Touch, which adds an even more sensitive version of the screen-pressing mechanic we first got on the Apple Watch.

Using Force Touch on the Apple Watch can be sort of weird because the watch is a tiny target on your wrist. That’s obviously not the case here. The biggest compliment I can pay 3D Touch right now is that it feels completely natural. It isn’t without a learning curve — you’ll probably spend a little time trying to remember now much pressure goes into a “peek,” the quick-glance pressure gesture that’s about to pop up in all your apps. Right now, only a few app developers have customized their apps to work with 3D Touch — Facebook, Instagram and WeChat are probably the biggest examples. You’ll be using the Peek press to load previews of webpages, bring up flight information, or jump into specific actions inside an app without opening it. They’re mostly little things for now, admittedly, but when I Peek-pressed something for the first time and got the option to very quickly update my Facebook status, I couldn’t help but wonder how much time the old long way would have taken.

That’s what the 6s and 6s Plus really have going for them — they’re a little better at saving your time than the iPhones that came before. There are other updates here, to be clear. The front-facing camera has an on-screen flash that did a fine job of lighting up my ugly lug even in a poorly lit corner of Apple’s demo space. Shooting “live photos” — sort of like those old HTC Zoes — is dead-simple and sort of fun. The upgraded 12-megapixel camera seems to take really nice photos, but it still has that distinctive hump. It’s not hard to see how early tipsters would have called the new Rose old option (pictured above) pink, but someone out there will probably dig it. Anyway, we’re still poking around this cavernous space, so stay tuned for videos and deeper dives into Apple’s new hardware.

Apple’s September iPhone event by the numbers

It’s that time of year again — the magical season wherein Apple tells the rest of us which devices will serve as status symbols for the next 12 months. The company also revealed a massive new iPad Pro, its second watchOS iteration and a new Apple TV. Here’s what went down, numerically.

There are quite a few improvements under the hood as well, including a faster processor and an improved OS. But, with rival companies coming out with phones that are lean, fast and affordable, is the 6s still the must-have handset this fall? We’ve been impressed with offerings from Samsung and LG this year, but how do they fare against Apple’s latest?

Google posts LMY48M factory images for current Nexus devices

Ash_History_of_Nexus-52

Just yesterday, T-Mobile announced a number of over-the-air updates for various Nexus devices, containing “Android security enhancements” and “minor bug fixes” for each device. Now some time has passed, and Google has finally published the official factory images for these latest security patches. Last August, Google told us we’d receive monthly security-focused updates for current Nexus devices, which was announced in the wake of the Stagefright exploit.

For the most part, all of the new factory images come with version number LMY48M, except for Nexus 6 owners on T-Mobile who will want to download version LYZ28J. If you happen to have a Nexus 6 on Project Fi, you’ll want to download version LVY48E.

This deal only lasts for about 12 more days or so, or while supplies last. If you’re interested, follow the link below for more information.

Apple drops prices on the iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus

Apple's new iPhone pricing

Sure, the brightest stars in Apple’s smartphone universe may be the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, but what if you want a big-screen iPhone on a (relative) budget? Don’t worry, you’re covered: Apple has dropped the prices on its older iPhone models. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus now start at $99 and $199 on 2-year contracts ($23 and $27 per month on typical installment plans, or $549 and $649 outright), making them much more palatable. The iPhone 5s is sticking around, too, and you can pick it up for free on a contract, $19 per month on installments or $450 up front.

As you may have gathered, this means big things for the broader iPhone lineup. All iPhones are now 64-bit, so it’s more likely that developers will write games and other apps that take advantage of the more powerful code. Also, you’ll notice that there’s now just one 4-inch smartphone in the mix, and that the plastic-bodied iPhone 5c has gone the way of the Dodo. Clearly, Apple believes that bigger, metal-clad phones are the way going forward.
