Phones may soon come with 6 GB of RAM thanks to new Samsung memory technology
Samsung has announced that it will be producing the world’s first 12 Gb LPDDR4 DRAM for mobile phones based on its 20 nm process. That’s a lot of fancy talk that basically means we’re probably going to start seeing huge amounts of RAM in phones and tablets soon.
The 12 Gb DRAM is the fasted DRAM chip available and offers the highest potential capacity on the market. This enables up to 6 GB of RAM to be used on a mobile device using four separate chips, which is pretty extreme for a mobile phone but now definitely possible and attainable. 6 GB of RAM will fit in what could previously only hold 3 GB of RAM, so manufacturers won’t have to accommodate any extra space.
Samsung’s component division has been doing increasingly well over the years thanks to its premium memory performance and Exynos chipset. There’s no telling exactly when we’ll start to see a whopping 6 GB of RAM in a smartphone, but if anyone is going to do it, it’s probably going to be Samsung.

Apple stock drops following Wednesday’s packed event
The excitement exuded by consumers after Apple’s event on Wednesday did not match the reaction of those on Wall Street. The company’s stock price for the day peaked within the first few minutes of the event’s start and then declined as it progressed and eventually came to a close.

Apple stock price on September 9, 2015
The event started at 1:00PM ET and the stock price continued to rise for about twenty minutes. Then, by the time Apple called it a day, the stock price was on a decline right up until the closing bell at 4:00PM ET. Apple’s stock price now sits at $110.15, down 1.9% from the previous day’s close. A possible reason for the drop is the unpredictability of consumers upgrading their current devices to Apple’s latest round. Apple’s products are known to be pricey and Wall Street seems to be balking, for the moment, on the idea that consumers will rush to upgrade.

Altair and Verizon team up to speed up development of new LTE-based, commercial IoT products
Altair Semiconductor, who make LTE chipsets, announced a new partnership with Verizon Wireless to accelerate the development of new LTE-based, commercial Internet of Things (IoT) products. Altair is currently showing LTE’s Release 12 PSM functionality at the CTIA conference in Las Vegas. This keeps their promise of a 10-year battery-life LTE connection.
Eran Eshed, Co-Founder and VP of Marketing and Business Development for Altair said:
“Our collaboration with Verizon Wireless is a clear indication that North America’s largest communication service provider sees the value of our LTE Cat-1/0 chipsets for IoT applications,” and “Altair is pioneering this new and emerging space for LTE and is focused on launching Cat-1/0 commercial products shortly.”
Ro McNally, Vice-president, Verizon Wireless said:
“The Internet of Things presents new opportunities for all of us in the industry. Verizon is committed to deliver solutions that meet the needs of our customers. Altair’s low-cost, long battery life LTE Cat-1 solution, being demonstrated at the Ericsson booth, is a great example of the innovation happening in this space,”
PSM, as specified by 3GPP Release 12, allows terminals to enter a deep-sleep mode for a long duration after notifying the base station. This will heavily reduce the amount of power associated with frequent communication requests normally sent by the base station.
Press Release:
HOD HASHARON, Israel, September 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ —
Altair Semiconductor (http://www.altair-semi.com), a leading provider of LTE chipsets, today announced a strategic initiative with Verizon Wireless to accelerate the development of new LTE-based, commercial Internet of Things (IoT) products. Altair is demonstrating LTE’s Release 12 PSM functionality at the CTIA conference in Las Vegas, fulfilling the promise of a 10-year battery-life LTE connection.
“Our collaboration with Verizon Wireless is a clear indication that North America’s largest communication service provider sees the value of our LTE Cat-1/0 chipsets for IoT applications,” said Eran Eshed, Co-Founder and VP of Marketing and Business Development for Altair. “Altair is pioneering this new and emerging space for LTE and is focused on launching Cat-1/0 commercial products shortly.”
PSM, as specified by 3GPP Release 12, enables terminals to enter a deep-sleep mode for long periods of time after notifying the base station. This reduces significantly the amount of power associated with devices having to wakeup frequently to monitor incoming messages. PSM helps most when devices send small messages to the network on an infrequent basis.
“The Internet of Things presents new opportunities for all of us in the industry. Verizon is committed to deliver solutions that meet the needs of our customers. Altair’s low-cost, long battery life LTE Cat-1 solution, being demonstrated at the Ericsson booth, is a great example of the innovation happening in this space,” said Ro McNally, Vice-president, Verizon Wireless.
Key potential applications for the Altair FourGee-1160 Cat-1 chipset are smart meters, car Telematics, security systems and smart home devices as well as other sensors and edge devices.
A demo of Altair’s PSM-capable chipsets will take place at Ericsson’s Super Mobility Week Booth #4322 at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, NV, fromSeptember 9-11.

$30 ‘Fallout 4’ season pass guarantees all add-on packs
A real-life Pip-Boy might be painfully out of reach, but Fallout 4 developer Bethesda has something else that might make up for it: a season pass for add-on content that actually sounds like a hellacious deal. Bethesda admits that it doesn’t even know what future packs will look like, but says that they’ll start hitting early next year. Thirty bucks for “all of the DLC we [Bethesda] ever do” sounds like a great idea, though. Almost every piece of post-launch content for Fallout 3 fundamentally changed how the game played in pretty significant ways, be it turning the role-playing game into an objective-based affair with “Operation: Anchorage,” a survival horror romp in “Point Lookout” or “Mothership Zeta’s” corridor-shooter sensibilities, so there’s precedent for some neat stuff coming down the pike.
However, there’s the chance that this content could miss the mark pretty hard as it was difficult for Bethesda to replicate those prior successes with the downloadable content packs for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. And of course, this is the same company that’s responsible for charging folks for horse armor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion — so perhaps temper your excitement just a bit.

Billie Holiday’s hologram is slated to play the Apollo theater
Joining the ranks of Tupac, Selena, Liberace and Michael Jackson, Billie Holiday’s posthumous hologram is slated to play the Apollo over the holidays. And she won’t be the last. The famed theater, one of the country’s first racially integrated clubs, announced on Wednesday that it also plans to be the first venue in America to routinely feature holographic performances.
“The possibilities inherent in this initiative are very exciting, allowing us the ability to show the enduring impact and relevance of artists across time periods and geographic locations,” said Jonelle Procope, president and CEO of the Apollo Theater. The plan has already been vetted and approved by the late singer’s estate. Holiday, despite now widely considered one of the most influential jazz and pop vocalists in history, died destitute in 1959.

Microsoft to launch major Office updates for iOS 9, iPad Pro and Watch
Microsoft’s giving its Office apps for Apple’s devices a huge boost, enabling it to take better advantage of iOS 9’s, WatchOS 2’s and the iPad Pro’s new features and capabilities. To start with, the company’s making it easier to multitask on the iPad — especially on the upcoming supersized Pro tablet — once the latest iOS version drops. You can slide over to a second screen to access another app, use two Office apps at the same time side-by-side and even edit a Word, an Excel or a PowerPoint file attached to an email while it’s open on Outlook via split screen.
If you frequently give presentations at work or school, you can also use PowerPoint’s Presenter View. It enables you to show only slides on a big screen even if you have a OneNote file with your talking points open on the side. As we mentioned on our iPad Pro preview, one of the suite’s sweetest updates is its “inking” feature, which adds new writing tools to the apps. You’ll be able to use those tools to write on your digital Office files as if they’ve been printed out and even highlight text on documents using the new Apple stylus called “Pencil.”
Apple Watch users aren’t getting left out, either: Outlook will start showing details about your next appointment and new email on the wearable when Watch OS 2 becomes available. Plus, you can Time Travel to future calendar entries using the the digital crown. Finally, the Microsoft Translator app for the device introduced in August will be able to replay a pinned translation through the Watch’s speakers. Hopefully, that means you don’t have to keep looking up how to ask where the toilet is while traveling overseas.

Nexus 5 cases posted on Amazon look fishy and inconsistent
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
It’s pretty obvious by now what the back of the new Nexus 5 is going to look like thanks to all the leaks. Ironically though, we have very little idea of what the device looks like from the front, a fact that has been made very obvious by a number of Nexus 5 cases that were posted to Amazon this morning. While the device pictured looks accurate from the back, the front of the device varies from listing to listing – case in point, one listing shows the Nexus 5 with huge bezels and dual front facing speakers (running Android Lollipop!), while another looks like someone photoshopped the front of the Nexus 6 to the device. Check it out:
Really, we can’t blame case makers for trying to jump the gun and get in on the Nexus 5 hype early – after all, cases don’t care what the front of a device looks like or what software it’s running. However, if you’re hoping to get a look at the Nexus 5 from the front, be sure to take these photos with quite a large grain of salt.

There are 30 devices using the Snapdragon 820 being developed now
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
We’ve already heard about the heroics of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, suffice to know that it will blow the Snapdragon 810 out of the water with its hands tied behind its back – for those concerned about actual numbers, we’re talking 40% lower power consumption and 40% faster graphics, to name a few. So it’s no surprise that there will be quite a few next generation flagship devices using the new processor, but a new report has suggested that there are already 30 devices using the Snapdragon 820 which are undergoing development right now.
That is a surprisingly high uptake among manufacturers, and rarer still that we get to hear about it before the devices are actually released. By the same token, it’s not surprising given the issues that the Snapdragon 810 had during its early days with rumours of overheating, so a more stable platform was always going to get more attention and be adopted more widely. We’re still months away from seeing a device with the new processor in it – Qualcomm says H1 2016, just to be vague – but from the sounds of it, the Snapdragon 820 is definitely the chip to be looking for come the new year.
What do you think about the uptake of the Snapdragon 820? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

New Minecraft Pocket Edition update adds controller support and cross-platform multiplayer
Minecraft Pocket Edition got a pretty major update today that adds in two new features; controller support, and cross-platform multiplayer for up to five people.
Controller support is a big one, especially if you hate playing games like this with a touch screen. Now the app features a page in the settings where you can assign buttons to actions, so you can completely remap a controller however you see fit.
The next big new feature is cross-platform multiplayer. If you’ve been keeping up with Minecraft (and Windows 10) you might know that the Windows 10 version of Minecraft available on Microsoft’s app store is essentially the Pocket Edition, but ported to desktop PCs. Because it’s the same game as what’s available on Android and iOS, this makes cross-platform multiplayer possible.
Unfortunately, this means no multiplayer with your buddies on Xbox or Playstation, or the normal, non-Windows 10 version of Minecraft, simply because those versions of the game are on different updates and have different features. We may see that in the future, but for now, this is what we have to work with.
You can find the update at the link below.
