NVIDIA’s Shield TV goes on sale in the UK and Europe

Nvidia Shield TV

In the six months since NVIDIA launched Shield TV, we’ve put it through its paces and called it best Android TV box money can buy. Consumers in the US have been able to get their hands on it since May, but now it’s time for Europe to get in on the act. That’s right, from tomorrow (October 1st), consumers in the UK, France, Germany and Scandinavia can buy the base 16GB model for £150/€200 or the 500GB Shield Pro for £230/€300.

There’s also a number of accessories you can add to your Shield bundle, including an official £40/€50 remote, £20/€30 stand and £50/€60 gamepad. One controller is included as standard, but two might make gaming on the Tegra X1-powered set-top box a whole lot more enjoyable. To coincide with the launch, the company is also debuting GeForce Now, the Netflix-for-games service which we originally knew as GRID. It’s free for the first three months on Shield devices, but transitions to a £7.49/€9.99 plan thereafter.

If you’re looking for something that matches Amazon’s Fire TV in the streaming stakes but has a little more oomph in the gaming department, Amazon and GAME will stock the Shield TV, but you can also grab it from NVIDIA’s official store if the online retailer doesn’t have a presence where you live.

TAG Heuer will launch its Android Wear smartwatch on November 9

tag-heuer-tradtional-watch

Android Wear didn’t feature much during Google’s Nexus announcement yesterday (which you can catch up on right here), but it’s still managing to garner some headlines for itself. This comes courtesy of TAG Heuer, who has revealed it will launch its Android Wear running smartwatch, the Carrera 01, in November.

The TAG Heuer smartwatch is scheduled to go on sale in New York on November 9 at 11am with a price tag of $1,800. The Carrera 01 is said to appear just like a normal, TAG Heuer watch. TAG Heuer CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, had this to say about the company’s upcoming smartwatch:

“That was our biggest challenge,” Biver said. “How can we make a connected watch that looks like a normal watch with the normal DNA of the Swiss watchmaking?”

Instead of the usual Snapdragon 400 processor used by most of the other Android Wear devices (except the original Moto 360, of course), the TAG Heuer wearable will be sporting a chip produced by Intel.

The most expensive Android Wear watch yet is coming on November 9 from Tag Heuer

tag heuer 2

The Tag Heuer smartwatch could look like this traditional Carrera 1887 model.

Android Wear is going up scale. Tag Heuer’s first smartwatch is officially launching November 9 with an $1800 price tag.

We first heard reports about Tag Heuer joining the Android Wear ecosystem back in March, when the Swiss watchmaker confirmed it would release a smartwatch in partnership with Google and Intel by November.

Yesterday, Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver announced the precise date of the launch, along with an updated price tag. Biver said in March that the device would cost $1,400, but the price is now said to be $1,800, and, apparently, we have Apple to thank for it, at least in part. In a CNBC interview, Biver declared himself “very, very pleased” with the Apple-Hermes tie-up for the Apple Watch, which allows Tag Heuer to sell its own luxury connected watch at $1500 or more.

We now have a launch date and a price tag, but other details about the Tag Heuer Android Wear device are hard to come by. Biver, who leads Tag Heuer and Hublot, both parts of luxury giant LVMH, previously teased a 40-hour battery life; Intel’s involvement could bring us the first AW device to run on a non-ARM SoC. As for appearance, Tag Heuer’s smartwatch is reportedly a digital replica of the watchmaker’s original black Carrera model.

With prices starting at $125 and heading into luxury territory thanks to the involvement of the Swiss watch industry, Android Wear becomes increasingly diverse. The initiative is still far from the vastness of the Android phone ecosystem, but customers in a wide range of categories now have an Android Wear option and that’s very healthy for the ecosystem’s long term growth.

Thanks for the tip!

Chainfire handing over ownership of SuperSU to new company

supersu

Chainfire is easily one of the most iconic developers in the Android modding world, known particularly for his expert work on SuperSU. If you’re a regular rooter/ROMer you have no doubt utilized one or more of Chainfire’s tools over the years. We owe a lot to his efforts, but now he’s now getting ready to hand over the reins to SuperSU after a long and successful run.

Chainfire has been maintaining SuperSU by himself since 2012, but is now transferring ownership to Coding Code Mobile Technology LLC (CCMT). Chainfire will continue to remain with the project for the next two years, though after that will be walking away from involvement. At least for now, that means more developers and additional funding should push SuperSU forward, allowing it to more quickly add features, bug fixes, and more.

Who is CCMT though? While the company is newly formed, Chainfire says in a G+ post that “the people at CCMT are no strangers to the root community. They have invested in, or own, a number of popular root apps (though I am not at liberty to disclose which ones) – chances are, you are running one of them right now. I believeSuperSU has found a good home there, and trust time will not prove me wrong.”

It’s unclear at the moment whether or not Chainfire’s other apps outside of SuperSU are involved with this deal. It’s also unclear what CCMT’s long-term plans for the app are. At least for now, SuperSU will continue to be completely free to download and redistribute. We imagine more official details on the change of management won’t be too far off.

Xbox One update increases party chat to 12 of your friends

The Legends Of Gaming Live Festival

Who says big companies never listen? Based on user feedback, Microsoft has increased the number of people in a local Xbox One party chat from the current eight. “Garnering over 2,200 votes on Xbox Feedback, we are expanding party chat to include 12 people,” said Microsoft’s Major Nelson (Larry Hryb). The new feature has rolled out to all Xbox One and Windows 10 Xbox app users, though it’s not something visible, as Hryb said it’s “all server side.” The extra comms will be especially handy during Xbox One FIFA parties when 11 separate players are on the pitch per team.

Though the new feature is available to all, it happened to roll out at the same time as the latest Xbox One preview update. Members will get even more party chat options, namely, the ability to text chat as well as voice chat. Other new features included a streamlined Game DVR experience, new animated avatars (another feature that came from user feedback) and updated quick access menu and new guide settings. The preview update will roll out later today.

Volkswagen says 1.2 million UK cars involved in emissions scandal

Volkswagen Badge

After confirming that it will spend more than 6.5 billion euros (£4.8 billion) to fix the 11 million vehicles affected by its diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen has come clean over how many of those are in the UK. The company says a total of 1,189,906 British cars with EA 189 EU5 engines will be recalled in the coming weeks and is in the process of contacting affected customers about what they need to do. It also plans to create a “self-serve process” for owners to check if their car is impacted by the issue, but notes that all of its vehicles are “technically safe and roadworthy” in the meantime.

If you missed what happened, the US Environmental Protection Agency recently found that the car maker was using a “defeat device” or software trick that could detect when a car was being tested and automatically enable its emissions control systems. When it returns to normal mode, the diesel car would then output high levels of nitrogen oxide, which contributes to high air pollution and causes respiratory issues.

The affected cars aren’t all Volkswagen-branded, though. Almost half of them (588,114) are, but 393,450 Audi, 76,773 SEAT and 131,569 Skoda vehicles were found to be using the so-called cheat device. Cars with EU6, V6 TDI and V8 TDI engines aren’t affected (as well as all petrol models). The company hopes to ready its “technical solutions” and share them with “responsible authorities” before the end of October, so if you find out that your car needs to be retuned, you might not have to wait too long to get it sorted.

Government audit finds federal networks unprepared for cyberattacks

Cyber Attack A01

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has discovered that 24 federal agencies are unprepared to protect their networks in the face of cyberattacks. According to the results of a recent GAO audit, these agencies continue to have weaknesses when it comes to detecting unauthorized network access, managing software and hardware configuration and planning for operations in case of network disruption, among other things. The agency says these weaknesses put federal personnel’s sensitive information at risk of being pilfered, just like what happened to the people whose identities were stolen when the Office of Personnel Management was hacked. Hackers got away with 30 years worth of data — including 21.5 million Social Security Numbers — from that attack.

GAO is adamant that it “made hundreds of recommendations to agencies to address deficiencies in their information security controls and weaknesses in their programs” in the past. Unfortunately, the agencies were yet to implement those pointers by the time they were audited. Senator Tom Carper told The Hill, however, that the audits happened before the agencies could execute the changes required by the Federal Information Security Act and the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act.

The results of this audit make it clearer why Homeland Security recently signed a lucrative contract with Raytheon recently to help federal agencies secure their networks and fend of cyberattacks. In addition, the Pentagon is working on an automated system that can detect unauthorized access before hackers can steal top secret info or do irreversible damage.
