Latest Chromecast app update brings content discovery, search functionality and more

New Chromecast app AA

Alongside the second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices, Google today announced it would soon begin rolling out a pretty sizable update to its Chromecast application. Not only will the update bring a redesigned interface to the app, it will also bring some handy new features that will make casting your favorite content much easier.

The headline feature in this update is the new What’s On section, which will allow you to browse through popular content – whether that be movies, YouTube videos or music – from your favorite cast-enabled applications. Each app that you have installed on your device that allows for casting media content gets its own section on this screen. You can browse through featured content and quickly select whatever you’d like to cast. Once you tap on a selection, that app will open up and show you the piece of content right away.

There’s also a revamped Devices section in the app that shows you all of your connected Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices. From here, you have access to playback controls for each individual device, allowing you to play, pause, stop playback, and even control volume levels for each device.

Last but not least, Google has also implemented a handy search bar, which will let you search for movies and TV shows across all of your installed applications. For instance, searching for Demetri Martin in the search bar will not only pull up videos of the popular comedian on YouTube, but also movies in which he’s appeared with direct links to Google Play so you can purchase the content. This feature isn’t just for Google Play content, though. It also works with other services like Netflix, Hulu and many more.

If you’re interested, here’s the full changelog for the new update:

  • What’s On: Browse popular and featured content from your favorite cast-enabled apps.
  • Devices: Personalize backdrop with Facebook and Flickr photo albums and control (play, pause & change volume) all your Chromecast devices.
  • Get Apps: Discover new offers and cast-enabled apps from content partners, through our curated and merchandised experience.
  • Search: Find where you can cast your favorite movies and TV shows.
  • Support for:
    • All new Chromecast devices
    • Android M

The big update is already rolling out to the Google Play Store, so head to the link below if you’re interested in grabbing the latest version!

HTC announces One M9+ Aurora Edition, Butterfly 3 for international markets

Google obviously stole the spotlight this morning with its barrage of announcements, but HTC had some things to say as well.  We’ve previously heard about HTC’s event in Japan, and suspected that variants of the top-end One M9+ and Butterfly J would be discussed (rather than the One A9, which was just teased).  Turns out those rumors where true.

One M9+ Aurora Edition

htc-one-m9-plus-aurora-press

Looking past the silly name, we essentially have a One M9+ with upgraded camera abilities.  The sensor is bumped up to 21MP from 20MP.  This may sound like an unnecessary upgrade, but it appears that the real value is due to HTC switching sensors.  We now have OIS on-board.

Additionally, to aid focusing speed, HTC forwent the depth-sensing duo camera for a laser autofocus.  The camera already has Phase-Detection Autofocus (PDAF), so now it switch between them to make best of the situation.

Other than this, we’re looking at a very similar device as the standard M9+:  5.2″ QHD display, MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (with microSD expansion), and 2,840mAh battery.  The One M9+ Aurora Edition was only announced for Taiwan, arriving on Oct. 5th for NT$20,900 (~$630).

Butterfly 3

HTC-Butterfly-3

The Butterfly 3 is a rebranded Butterfly J (previously offered in Japan only).  This will be an “international” variant.  It holds a lot of HTC’s top-end specs this year, but cheaper due to it’s plastic body.

The Butterfly 3 still has the secondary duo sensor on the back for depth control with images.  The main rear sensor is 20MP with OIS.  You’ll also notice a significant sensor on the front, which will provide 13MP high-res selfies.

Other specs are a 5.2″ QHD display, Snapdragon 810 SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (with microSD expansion), and a 2,700mAh battery.  Also, this guy is rated for IPX5 and X7 water and dust resistance.

The Butterfly 3 will first launch in Taiwan on Oct. 20th, with the promise of other markets in the future.  However, I wouldn’t hold your breath to see it overseas.  It is priced at NT$19,900 (~$600).

GoGroove BlueSYNC RST Alarm Clock Speaker review [with coupon code for our readers!]

I love when products evolve to keep up with the times. With the success of the smartphone came the death of some dedicated devices for many people, such as the compact camera, mp3 player, and home phone system. Also, remember the days you had a dedicated alarm clock by your bedside? Where you could satisfyingly slam on the snooze button whenever that dreadful sound started up?

Well, GoGroove is trying to see if that dedicated alarm clock could make a comeback, packed with a multitude of modern functionality. Allow me to introduce the BlueSYNC RST.

DSC03742

At its core it’s an alarm clock, but it doubles up as a bluetooth speaker. And for another modern touch, you can effortlessly tap your phone on the top of the device and quickly pair via NFC (if your smartphone has it – I’m looking at you OnePlus). Let’s check it out.

Design

The design of the RST is fairly basic. We essentially have a cube (almost). Display is on the front, controls are on the top, speakers fire from the sides, and I/O is on the back.

The build is plastic, as one would expect. It’s a suitable plastic, I don’t get a feeling of cheapness or that the device will fall apart whatsoever. Although, it’s just meant to sit in one place, primarily being an alarm clock. GoGroove has been in the accessory game for a while, and quality with this device meets expectation.

DSC03743

I like the feel of the plastic up top, which is great because this is where you’ll interact with the RST the most. It’s a smooth, soft-touch material. The buttons are large, which I appreciate, so they’re clear to tell and easy to press. They also have a satisfying click when pressed.

DSC03747

Most of the buttons are clear to their functions, such as the “Zzz” to snooze, volume up/down, or power button. For a couple of them, such as the “S” button, a quick look at the manual got me up to speed (it’s a Source selection button). The NFC button stands out most of all, distinctly colored in blue.

The display on the front is big and bright. The font is in a digital clock form and has a blue-hue. The different functions light up as they’re activated, such as Bluetooth pairing or a set alarm. No complaints here, the display does its job.

DSC03763

You may have noticed a small structure sticking out from the top. It is conveniently a smartphone/tablet dock. GoGroove did not forget the fact that your phone is still going to be by your bedside, so there’s a nifty place for it to rest.

DSC03754

While this is a nice and thoughtful addition, I wish GoGroove would’ve incorporated wireless charging somehow. This could’ve been a significant selling point. There is a wired way to charge your phone, via a USB outlet from the back of the RST. Just bear in mind you may need to rest your phone horizontally on the dock, if the placement blocks your microUSB port.

Functionality

There is a slight learning curve for setting up the alarms and settings, but nothing a quick look at the manual doesn’t solve. There are two alarms, which is great for redundancy in my case. I’m a heavy sleeper and sometimes don’t remember turning off the alarm.

I had a slight hiccup with getting connected the first time. I placed my phone on the NFC symbol, but it wasn’t pairing. I figured out that you have to press the power button first (then the bluetooth symbol lights up), and then you can pair. I’d argue that the RST should automatically turn on bluetooth as soon as it detects an NFC contact. After all, the point is to be effortless and intuitive. But it was a minor hiccup.

Setting the alarm is another area I wish was a little more intuitive. When you press the button, it shows “rad” on the display. Press it again and it shows “bu”. I didn’t know what to think of it. Looking in the manual and you’ll find that those are two different sources of which to wake you, “rad” for radio and “bu” for a buzzing sound. You then press “Source” to be able to start setting the alarm time with the +/- buttons. Not the most intuitive system.

As expected, there are buttons to control playback:  Back track, next track, pause/play, and volume. You can also answer/end calls. GoGroove included a remote with the RST. It’s a nice addition if you mess with the device a lot and don’t want to keep walking up to it. It is compact and includes has control for all the functions.

DSC03751

On the rear we have a USB port (to charge your phone/tablet), Aux In (if you prefer to use a wired audio signal), time setting button, volume buttons, antenna (for FM radio), and power input.

DSC03745

The bluetooth range is great. I managed to get about 50 feet before the signal started cutting out.

Sound Quality

The RST has considerably sized speakers, which shoot out from the sides. This isn’t GoGroove’s first crack at bluetooth speakers. With that in mind, I can say that the sound quality was good. It won’t blow you away or replace your more expensive sound system. It gets the job done.

There is considerable loudness, it is good at filling the room. The sound quality is a little on the thin side, but not too bad. Bass is particularly done well in my opinion. It can deliver a satisfying punch.

When I held my ears close to the speakers, I can hear a little static. It may have to do with the antenna, because this thing can also output FM radio. But when giving it a little distance, the music takes over and it’s clear.

Final Thoughts

DSC03767

The GoGroove BlueSYNC RST is an interesting device. It’s been a while since I’ve had a dedicated bedside clock. The modern touches adds new life to the purpose.

Once I learned how to set it up, it was smooth sailing from there. Although, I would urge GoGroove to make it even simpler, since you might meet some hesitance in asking people to go back to the old ways.

I don’t see everyone buying into this concept, but if you listen to music in your bedroom a lot, the RST should be a consideration. I like how well the sound fills the room, the ease of mind from a redundant alarm, and nice place for my phone to sit.

*GoGroove was kind to include a discount code for our readers (purchasing the RST through this Amazon link). Enter “RSTSAVER” at the checkout and it’ll get you $10 off.  The discount only lasts until Monday, Oct. 5th.

New Chromecast products

Today was a big day for Google, as it announced new Nexus devices, a new tablet, and new Chromecast devices (yes, that’s plural!). There are two Chromecast devices now, one meant for TV, and one meant for speakers, dubbed Chromecast Audio. Let’s take a look at each!

Chromecast

First up is the refresh device to the ever popular Chromecast. The original sold over 20 million units worldwide. However, some of the technology in the original Chromecast was outdated, so this new one has some new specs to keep you stream-happy for awhile. So, to help current Chromecast owners make a decision, we’re going to break down the specs of each.

chromecast

Chromecast (New) Chromecast (1st gen)
Dimensions 51.9 x 51.9 x 13.49 mm 72 x 35 x 12 mm
Weight 39.1 g 34 g
Color Black, Coral, Lemonade Black
Resolution output 1080p 1080p
Wireless Standards      802.11c Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz only)
Price $35 $35

The new Chromecast comes with a refreshed, modern design, making it look more like a small hockey puck rather than a dongle. However, there are also two new colors with the new Chromecast: Coral, and Lemonade (both available exclusively through the Google Store). Probably the biggest differences lie in the wireless standards and the software (below). The new Chromecast will now work with 5Ghz connections, whereas the 1st gen only worked with 2.4GHz. This will help buffer things more quickly, resulting in less lag overall.

Updated Software

The new Chromecast will have a slew of software enhancements that will make the Chromecast experience quicker, smoother, and easier to navigate. How much of this will carry over to the 1st gen is unclear, however it seems its mostly enabled through the Chromecast app, so keep an eye out for an update (I had one when I checked).

There are already 200,000 TV shows and movies available for streaming on the Chromecast. However, Showtime is bringing all of their content in the coming weeks, and Spotify will soon be available as well. Sling TV will also be available on the new Chromecast. There will be other new services coming, along with major sports leagues such as the NBA and NHL. So stay tuned for updates on those.

Content discovery in the new app shows things based on the apps you have installed. This brings a simple view of cast enabled apps you already have. This will also help you search across all Cast-enabled apps for specific content, so searching for “House of Cards” will bring up the TV show, and the apps that its available for viewing in (in this case, Netflix). The new app will allow for easier discovery of Chromecast-ready apps as well.

Fast Play will be available for content developers, so that when you select to play content, it will do so much more quickly. This will be available to all content developers.

Backdrop now has support for 500px, Facebook, Flickr, and Getty Images, allowing for even more pictures to be displayed on your TV when you’re not casting.

Along with the above improvements comes a new Chromecast capability – the ability to play complex multiplayer games. Multiplayer games was available in limited scope before but now will allow for content to display on the TV as well as on your phone. Your phone will act as the controller and will sometimes even show whats on the screen on your phone, sort of like a Wii U controller, but for multiple people. Access to each person’s accelerometer, compass, and more will allow for dynamic gameplay. Google seems keen that this will change the face of gaming.

Chromecast Audio

Along with the updated Chromecast came the announcement of the Chromecast Audio. The Chromecast Audio is much like the regular Chromecast, except for your speakers. It aims to turn the speakers you already own into cast-ready devices. So instead of connecting your phone with a cable, you can instead connect the Chromecast Audio, and stream music from a slew of cast-ready apps from your phone.

The Chromecast Audio works with 3.5mm auxiliary cables, RCA, and even Optical connections. So, this will allow you to turn your “dumb” speaker into a “smart” speaker.

Also like the regular Chromecast, the Chromecast Audio will allow you to perform regular functions on your phone without interrupting the stream of music. So, answering phone calls, surfing the web, and more is no problem while using the Chromecast Audio.

Probably the only thing remiss from the Chromecast Audio is rechargeable battery. It seems it must be plugged in to a power supply for it to work.

Other than that, the Chromecast Audio is available for $35, along with the new Chromecast, starting today from the Google Store and other outlets.

The Nexus 6P is now official, pre-orders starting at $499 USD

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

I don’t remember a time when we weren’t aware of a Huawei Nexus smartphone in the pipeline, but the time for waiting and speculation is finally over – the Huawei Nexus 6P is now official. Unsurprisingly, it’s exactly the device the extensive leaks have suggested it is – 5.7-inch AMOLED Quad HD display, Snapdragon 810 v2.1, 3GB RAM and available in 32, 64 and 128GB storage variants. One of the Nexus 6P’s biggest selling points is its camera, which Google says is special despite its 12.3MP sensor which looks instinctively underpowered – Google says because the camera uses 1.55 μm pixels, it’s able to take better low light pictures and better pictures in general (think like HTC’s UltraPixel except with an actual decent camera sensor). Perhaps because of this, the Nexus 6P won’t have optical image stabilization as its predecessor, the Nexus 6, had.

Naturally, the other elephant in the room is the new fingerprint sensor which Google calls “Nexus Imprint”, and will allow you to unlock your phone, among other functions. Overall, the design of the Nexus 6P is exactly as we expected it, though there is a slight design change that some skeptics might be happy about – the black bar at the top of the device appears to protrude much less than when we first saw it, tapering with the edge of the device. If anything, it protrudes out even less than the Galaxy S6’s camera module.

Nexus 6P is now official

The draw of an all-aluminium body in white, black or gold is undeniable, however, the Nexus 6P has had to do away with a feature some people love to use – wireless charging. It will support Quick Charge, naturally, and the 3,450mAh battery should hopefully give you enough juice to get you through the day anyway. The Nexus 6P is starting to become available for pre-order in some markets already, namely the US, UK, Ireland, and Japan, starting at $499 USD for the 32GB version, $549 USD for the 64GB version and finally $649 USD for the 128GB version. Presumably availability will continue to roll-out over the next few weeks.

What do you think now that Nexus 6P is official?

Google adds new Sensor Hub chip to Nexus devices

google_android_sensor_hub_chip_slide

During the announcement of the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P that took place earlier today, Google shared a new technology they have added to their new smartphones. Called the Sensor Hub, this is a new low-power chip added to the devices in order to handle some secondary processing and help preserve battery life by keeping the main processor idle. The Sensor Hub chip connects to the various sensors included in the devices and monitors them for input. An example might be when you start running with the phone in your pocket or detecting when a user picks the phone up from off of a table. In the latter case, the device could go ahead and display notifications.

Using a secondary, low-power chip to handle recognition of activity when the main processor is idle is not a new concept. Motorola has been doing this for a while now with their Moto X line and Apple recently added this capability in their iPhone 6S devices. One area where there is a lot of room for improvement – and a competitive advantage – with smartphones is battery life, so any step that can help with that and improve usefulness at the same time will likely be pursued by more manufacturers. Using dedicated chips for specific purposes like monitoring for activity when a device is otherwise at “rest” is one strategy. With Google incorporating this into their Nexus devices, more Android phones should see this added.

Sony Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua Android 5.1.1 update begins rolling out

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua

Sony has begun rolling out a new software update for the Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua. The update brings some welcome additions, including the most recent version of Android–5.1.1 (at least until next week).

Here’s the rundown of what Xperia M2 and M2 Aqua owners can expect to see:

  • A fresh look and feel – based on Google’s material design
  • Increased customization options – so you have even more control over the way volume, silent modes and your alerts function
  • Brand new LinkedIn integration – be more productive, with Linkedin information about your meeting participants directly in your Calendar
  • SmartWear integration – selfie snapping made that bit easier, with SmartWatch 3 as a remote shutter button

As per the norm, there’s also the usual bevy of performance enhancements and bug fixes. It’s certainly a neat update, and the LinkedIn integration is a nice touch for those that use the service.

The update started rolling out today, and while some will see it immediately, the update should reach everyone within the next couple of weeks. Of course, there’s always the option of trying to grab it manually in the device’s settings menu.
