Verizon reports on successful network performance during Papal visit

Verizon-Wireless-logo-7893

Verizon has issued a report on how their network held up during the recent Papal visit to the United States. According to the carrier, even though parts of the network saw traffic surges to 12 times normal levels during periods of the Pope’s six-day visit, their network was able to handle the influx of additional usage. The biggest bump from users trying to document and share the visit occurred on Sunday morning for the Papal Mass, which was attended by 850,000 people.

Verizon says the World Meeting of Families event on Saturday night was attended by more than 200,000 people and generated considerable extra volume. Even outside of the scheduled events, network traffic was up to ten times normal activity in places like Washington, DC and New York City.

Verizon says they started working on preparations to handle the extra demands on their network almost 18 months ago, investing more than $30 million in the area to beef up its network capacity. Dave Heverling, Northeast Area Vice President with Verizon Wireless noted, “Network strength and reliability are particularly important during large-scale events, and we’re proud of our network’s performance during Pope Francis’s historic visit. All of our preparations and enhancements paid off as our network enabled attendees to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with their friends and family seamlessly.”

Verizon’s Wireless Network Delivers Strong Performance Throughout Historic Papal Visit

Network Enhancements Proved Successful, Providing Millions with Mobile Connectivity during Pope Francis’s Tour of Washington D.C., New York City and Philadelphia

Throughout the Pope’s six-day tour, with stops in Washington D.C., New York City and Philadelphia, Verizon’s wireless network delivered exceptional performance, even during the most densely crowded events such as the Papal Mass for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia.

“Network strength and reliability are particularly important during large-scale events, and we’re proud of our network’s performance during Pope Francis’s historic visit,” said Dave Heverling, Northeast Area Vice President of Network for Verizon Wireless. “All of our preparations and enhancements paid off as our network enabled attendees to share this once-in-a-lifetime experience with their friends and family seamlessly.”

In Washington DC, Verizon saw network traffic up to ten times normal levels. In New York, network traffic reached six times normal levels. And in Philadelphia during Saturday night’s World Meeting of Families event on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway – attended by more than 200,000 people – and Sunday’s Papal Mass – attended by more than 850,000 people – Verizon’s network handled nearly 12 times the normal amount of network traffic. On-the-ground testing by Verizon network engineers demonstrated the company’s network performance equaled and generally exceeded that of other networks in all three cities.

Network preparations for the Pope’s visit began nearly 18 months ago. Verizon leveraged past experiences with large events – from presidential inaugurations to the Super Bowl to the New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square – to plan for the large crowds and their anticipated mobile usage.

Verizon invested more than $30 million in these three cities increase its network capacity, installing new cell sites, adding capacity to existing sites, installing mini-cells, and in Philadelphia, adding its equipment to a newly installed distributed antenna system (DAS). All of these infrastructure enhancements are permanent and will help residents and visitors continue to have a fast, reliable network for years to come.

At every stop, in D.C., New York and Philadelphia, mobile cell sites, such as COWs (cells on wheels), were brought in to help ensure a strong and reliable connection.

Evernote updated with three new widgets and quick notes

evernote-logo

Evernote today took to its blog to announce that it has released a new Evernote widget for your Android device’s home screen. Evernote has a widget already, but it’s a completely separate application and doesn’t work as seamlessly with Evernote as some might like.

This new Evernote for Android update brings with it three new and powerful widgets. The 1×1 Actions Widget aims to provide you with quick actions for accessing notes, your camera, and more.

The 4×1 Action Bar is just what it sounds like–a widget that lets you select up to 11 actions for quick access to some of your most favorite Evernote features. Finally, there’s a 4×2 List Widget that provides shortcuts to Evernote features in addition to your notes. For your notes, you can select a specific notebook, your most recent notes, and so on.

Evernote in this new update is also introducing a new feature dubbed Simple Notes. This will allow you to do just as it sounds–jump right into a new note, allowing you to quickly jot down a new thought or even your weekend grocery list.

If you haven’t gotten the update yet, be sure to hit the download link below.

Google and NASA extend their D-Wave quantum computing contracts

D-Wave, a Canadian quantum computing firm, announced on Monday that a consortium between Google, NASA and the USRA (Universities Space Research Association) has agreed to extend its existing contract with the company for another seven years. This new agreement will see the existing 500-qubit D-Wave Two hardware remain at NASA Ames research center as well as install new quantum computers as they are invented. The Google-led consortium employs these computing platforms to study how the emerging technology could help develop AI and machine learning systems. NASA specifically uses the computer to generate better mission-control supports.

See an unreleased ‘South Park’ game running on the original Xbox

Legend has it that back in the early 2000s, Oregon studio Buzz Monkey was working on an officially licensed South Park game for the original Xbox. The game never shipped, but an incredibly early version appears to have made its way to an Xbox debug console — and it’s now on YouTube. The folks at HappyConsoleGamer unearthed the forgotten South Park game on an original Xbox and they’ve posted (extremely rough) gameplay, featuring a split-screen mode and Cartman walking around his house, driving a school bus and fighting a pack of dogs. Yep, this game has a combat system. Also included in the video is a taste of an unreleased Happy Feet game, which is appropriately adorable.

Google gives your Android apps more room to breathe

Google Play app search

Google just introduced a low-key change that could make a big, big impact on the Android apps you use. The search giant has doubled the maximum initial download size for apps from 50MB to 100MB, giving developers more headroom before they have to rely on post-install downloads like the ones you often see for large games. That will not only spare you from rude surprises when you’re launching apps for the first time, but allow for more complex apps than were possible before.

And that’s no minor concern. As an example, the current Facebook app for Android comes in just under the wire at 43.4MB — it’d be hard to bolt on a big new feature without requiring a secondary download. This won’t be thrilling news if you’re already nervous about your data usage, but it’s otherwise a big step forward for the sophistication of Android software.

Samsung promotion will pay your installment plan until 2016

Inside Tokyo Game Show 2015

Samsung is the latest phone manufacturer to offer up a rebate to customers willing to switch from a rival platform. The company announced a new promotion on Monday that would put up to $120 back in customers’ pockets should they purchase a Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+ or Galaxy Note5 on an installment/lease plan. Basically, if you are a T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular (anybody but AT&T) subscriber and purchase one of these phones by October 9th, Samsung will pay your phone installments through the end of the year. That means once January rolls around, you’re back on the hook for the remainder of your installment plan (not to mention whatever service contract you’ve signed on for). Samsung will further sweeten the deal for iPhone trade-ins by offering an extra $100 Google Play gift card on top of the installment payments.

If you’ve been itching to try out this title on your Android device ever since then, we have some good news. EA has finally announced that Need for Speed: No Limits will make its way to the Google Play Store on Wednesday, September 30th.

This new free-to-play racing title will offer up all of the things you already love about the Need for Speed series.
