I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty sure somebody is going to get in a heap of trouble after basically every announcement that Google has been preparing has leaked out. One of the things Google is said to be announcing tomorrow (or today, depending on where you live) is a Google Play Music Family Plan which will allow multiple users over multiple devices to use Google Play Music’s All Access for one flat price. And how much can you expect to pay for this Google Play Music Family Plan? $15 a month for up to 6 users. Yes, you read that right.

This puts Google Play Music on par with Apple Music in terms of multi-user accounts who charges the same amount for the same number of users, and makes it one of the best options available for large families who all have Android devices. Obviously we’ll learn a few more of the specifics at Google’s press conference tomorrow, but we’re excited for this one as it’s a fantastic deal for families of music lovers.

Nexus 5X specs leak out, confirms it will have 2GB RAM

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

We’re probably only a few hours away from Google announcing the Nexus 5X, but that’s not going to stop the torrents of leaks that have emerged over the last week. Next on the list is the Nexus 5X specs, which leaked out in its entirety today. The thing that will likely disappoint people the most is that the Nexus 5X is going to have 2GB RAM – while that’s not a minuscule amount in and of itself, every other flagship device released this year has released with 3 or 4GB RAM.

Nexus 5X specsThe rest of the specifications are pretty much exactly what we were expecting including a 5.2-inch 1080 display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 16 and 32GB storage variants, and a USB Type-C port. What you might also notice is that the Nexus 5X is going to be quite light at 136 grams – for reference, the smaller Nexus 5 came in at 130 grams, so it looks like the Nexus 5X is going to be of a similar constitution. Ultimately, it only really matters how much it’s going to cost, and if the leak earlier today is anything to go by, the Nexus 5X is going to start at $379 USD, which is very attractive indeed.

Slack Posts 2.0 explains big ideas without sending more emails

We live in an Orwellian future where every “k” and “LOL” brings us ever-closer to 1984-style Newspeak. To fight back, Slack’s latest update acknowledges there are times when a line or two of IM-speak doesn’t get the job done. Sometimes ideas need a little more explanation, and with that, it has released an update to its Posts tool dubbed — creatively — Posts 2.0.

The newest iteration of Posts sees the implementation of a number of improvements that will make it easier to create, share and discuss long-form ideas/pitches. Basically, Posts 2.0 contains a fully fledged CMS (much like Tumblr/Wordpress) meaning you can drop in pictures, Tweets, bits of code, anything you need to get your point across. Posts even contain a standalone comments thread so conversations about the project can be found all in one place, making ideas and edits way easier to follow.

A post is created in private as a default and can be shared with an individual, channel or even publicly, searchable by anyone over the Internet. Even though the new features within Slack are welcome, it has taken the developers nearly two whole years to implement these changes and they’re only available on the desktop client. Following this pattern, we’re penciling in Posts 3.0 for your iPhone 7s and Nexus 6XP sometime in 2017.

Is Apple a cult? New York University Historian says “it obviously is”

apple-store TungCheung / Shutterstock.com

Even when working from a garage in the Silicon Valley, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs never saw his products as mere pieces of tech. He had a very strong vision that shaped the way people look at technology. It was a mentality, as well as a way of life, something he later conveyed to the company’s followers. He was seen as some form of tech prophet. And if that’s the case, his company is also to be portrayed as some form of religion; Cupertino is its Mecca and Apple stores are the temples.

We have all heard of the “Cult of Apple”, but when we say this we usually just refer to the intense fervor Apple followers show towards the tech giant and its products. Most of us don’t dig into what really makes Apple some form of cult, but it turns out this company does take plenty of cues from the most popular religions on earth. At least this is what expert Historian and NYU professor Erica Robles-Anderson believes, and she backs up her argument with plenty of evidence.

“They feel iconic, like an emblem of the personal. And yet it’s a cult. Right? It’s so obviously a cult.” -Erica Robles-Anderson, Historian and NYU professor

Inclusion vs exclusivity

We have all seen manufacturers speak of their devices as some form of exclusive product. Apple has never portrayed itself that way. Even if they price their products at much higher rates, they always display a mentality that makes it seem as if iPhones and other Apple products are for everyone. These phones are always simple and natural. We obviously can’t forget that “it just works” phrase, which became some form of unofficial slogan for the company.

The whole point is that Apple makes you feel included. Everyone in this “cult” is working towards a common purpose – there’s some form of unity here. Robles-Anderson brings up the newer Samsung store at SoHo, one of New York’s important shopping districts. They launched with “giant ropes outside, as if anticipating a giant crowd, and big bouncer-looking people in fancy suits.” Needless to say results weren’t as expected, and she believes it’s partly because the Korean manufacturer took that secluding business approach.

“It was a deep misunderstanding about special access, as opposed to what Apple has built, which is the feeling of being in it together, as though you were fighting something, even though it’s the most valuable company in the world.” -Erica Robles-Anderson, Historian and NYU professor

Apple’s cathedrals

In order to further help us understand how Apple achieved this unusual passion from its followers, Erica takes us back to temples. She states that cathedrals and other religious structures were pretty much technology in its times; they were works of art that went beyond what’s possible. And we can see the same influence in Apple’s products, as well as the architecture and interior design they choose for their stores.

The SoHo Apple store is especially unique. Customers have to walk through stone steps, which are wide and deep. Upon reaching the entrance you are met with unnecessarily large doors, which also happen to be quite heavy, similar to those in medieval churches. The store welcomes you with a large skylight and plenty of lights, making the space very bright. Right in front is a wide glass staircase that seems to challenge common sense. In addition, the store uses an excessive amount of clear surfaces, so people can always see each other. This makes both service and interaction with other people very personable.

Robles-Anderson claims places like this make you feel small. In addition, the design makes you feel as if you have entered a different place, and upon entering you feel as if something important is about to happen.

Apple_Store_Carrousel_du_Louvre,_18_March_2011

Many temples are built on levels, with different purpose on each floor. This is very common in Mormon temples, for example, in which different levels are used for different things, and you can find different types of religious representatives in each part. In this case, Erica compares Apple Geniuses to priests, and the second floor is where they can be found. In here, they share information and knowledge. It’s said to be more welcoming than the first floor, with plush chairs and a giant screen.

Rituals

We can all guess where this is going, right? Apple and its followers definitely have some types of ritualistic behavior. Of course, there’s the whole deal with people camping out for days just to get an iPhone. This has become much more than a race to get the latest and greatest product; people do this as some kind of tradition. As Robles-Anderson said, they are working towards something together. They are part of something bigger – think of it as some form of pilgrimage.

She also compares this to biblical traditions like Passover, when Jewish people had to travel to Jerusalem and be at the Holy Temple for a sacrifice to god. She calls these “feast days”. Apple release dates are celebrations.

The meaning of life?

Well, we won’t go as far as saying Apple answers the most important questions to humanity, but Erica does believe that when people come to Apple Stores they are looking for something much deeper than apps, calls and the like. Just head over to your local Apple store and look at the walls. These are adorned by pictures of planets, stars, nature and other imposing symbols being displayed by huge “monolithic devices”. Though they are small on your hand, these devices promise something huge – information.

Google, Android and its partners

There’s no doubt other companies can learn a lot from Apple’s marketing and strategies. Whether you will see the company as a cult or not, we can’t deny they hold a very tight grip on the market, even if Android manufacturers have proven time and again that they can often do a better job at making a gadget.

This is why Apple doesn’t need to be first at anything, they just have to make the strongest impression with what they do, something they are amazingly good at. They target your feelings, psychology, physiology and senses.

nexus 6 vs iphone 6 plus aa (17 of 24)

Let’s face it, most Android manufacturers are bad at marketing. Samsung is likely about the best at it, and as you can see they fail to make its followers very included. HTC makes amazingly built devices and some would say their designs are among the best, but they can’t make ends meet when convincing people to purchase their phones. And even new Chinese startups are starting to gain more hype than tech veterans like LG, Huawei, Sony and others.

Maybe there needs to be some kind of Genius lesson on how to do advertising and marketing right. Shall we have it at this SoHo Apple store?

Indian smartphone maker Micromax could launch into the US market according to people briefed on the company’s plans. Micromax has been considering whether to launch its Yu brand in the US next year but despite Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma saying it had decided not to do so, it is believed the launch is still being considered.

Micromax is following companies such as Huawei and OnePlus from China who have taken the US smartphone market more seriously, as the power of carriers has dwindled with more companies selling directly to customers. As a result, established players such as Samsung and LG – who traditionally charge a high unsubsidised price for their flagships – are finding that the switch to an unsubsidised model has made their handsets too expensive for the average consumer.

Instead, companies such as US-based BLU Products and Nextbitwho is set to launch a cloud-first smartphone – along with China-based Xiaomi and others are all gambling on their cheaper phones being more attractive in the new unsubsidised marketplace.

A key problem for Micromax and all other companies hoping to break into the market is that Apple earns almost all the profit in the US smartphone market and the top five Android manufacturers control half the market share between them. With the US market potentially worth $80 billion this year, there’s plenty of scope for new manufacturers to enter the market.

chinese-china-companies-in-the-us Why are Chinese brands seen poorly in the US and what can they do about it?140

Almost two thirds of all sales are still made through wireless carriers but with companies such as Apple, Motorola and Huawei all selling direct to consumers, new companies may yet be successful in the US. What do you think about Micromax launching its low cost smartphones in the US? Let us know your views in the comments below guys.

Logitech’s latest mechanical gaming keyboard is also pretty light

Mechanical keyboards aren’t just for old school PC users anymore — they’ve also become fairly popular among the PC gaming crowd. The downside for all that glorious, mechanical keyboard feedback? They’re usually pretty hefty. Logitech aims to solve that problem with the G410 Atlas Spectrum TKL ($130), a gaming keyboard that eschews the right-hand number pad for a slimmer design. Unlike some mechanical keyboards, it also doesn’t have a metal plate inside, which adds quite a bit of weight. Logitech claims its Romer-G mechanical switches allow the G410 to register key presses 25 percent faster than other mechanical keyboards, and they’re also designed to withstand 70 million keystrikes (around 40 percent more than the competition). At 1.8 pound, the G410 is half the weight of Logitech’s larger G910 keyboard, making it a far better option for lugging around.

Being something for the gaming crowd, the G410 also packs in a bevy of lights. Yes, they’re still a bit garish, but they’re also more than mere decoration. Developers can have specific elements of their games activate different areas of the keyboard — for example, they can make certain keys light up like a speedometer for a racing game (something one company is already doing). If you’ve got other Logitech G devices, like the G633 headset and G303 mouse, you can also sync up all of their lighting.

I’ve grown used to the flatter, chiclet-style keyboards that are just about everywhere these days, but typing on the G410 brought back some of my earliest PC memories. There was just the right amount of “oomph” when I tried typing a few sentences. Exploring the world of The Witcher 3 with the G410 also felt dramatically different than my existing wireless keyboard and mouse setup. I’m not quite sure if it makes sense to actually write with mechanical keyboards anymore (thought I know many people who swear by them), but I could see how the extra feedback from the G410 could make games a lot more rewarding (even if it’s a purely psychological bonus).

The Logitech G410 will hit the U.S. and Europe in October. Check back soon for deeper impressions.

T-Mobile starts rolling out Lollipop OTA for the Galaxy Tab 4 & Note 10.1 (2014)

Galaxy Tab 4 8.0

T-Mobile has just started rolling out the long-awaited Lollipop firmware update to its carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy Tab 4’s and Galaxy Note 10.1’s (2014) located in the United States. This upgrade ferries all the standard changes that are baked into Android 5.1 along with a patch for the Stagefright security vulnerability to the slates.

The changelog is pretty lengthy, but we thought if you’re receiving this update you may want to know what exactly is in it, so we’ve included it below:

  • Material Design: You will quickly notice a whole new colorful look and feel to your device – from fluid animations to new application and system themes, colors and widgets.
  • Notifications UI & Priorities: In order to alert you to the mosttimely and relevant information, the format and behavior of notifications have evolved:
    • notifications will appear on the lock screen and are intelligently ranked by type and who sent them.
    • you double-tap to open one, swipe left or right to clear one, or clear all notifications from the bottom of the list.
    • you can set the priority and privacy of notifications for each application.
    • very high priority notifications will pop up briefly over other applications so that you can take action.
    • when you dismiss a notification on one device it will be dismissed on your other Android devices, if they are connected to the Internet.
    • you can further tailor how notifications behave with the new Downtime and Ambient Display settings (see below).
  • New Interruptions & Downtime Settings: You can tailor how interruptions behave, choosing to allow all, none, or only priority interruptions.  You can personalize what counts as a priority interruption (reminders, events, calls, messages) and even tailor them to be from only contacts you specify.  The Downtime setting will allow only priority interruptions during the times and days that you specify.  e.g. allow only priority interruptions on the weekend.
  • Recent Apps (Multi-tasking): The redesigned Overview space (formerly called Recents) will include both applications and separate activities within those applications.  For instance, each open tab in Chrome will also appear here along with recent applications; both your Gmail Inbox and a draft email message will appear as separate cards.  This provides a consistent way to switch amongst tasks.
  • Flashlight: Lollipop includes a new flashlight option as part of Quick settings (swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it).
  • Pin a view/app: Screen pinning allows you to keep a specific app or screen in view. For example, you can ‘pin’ a game and your child will not be able to navigate anywhere else on your phone.
  • Battery: The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left while discharging or charging.  You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
  • Smarter Internet Connections: With Android Lollipop, your phone will not connect to a Wi-Fi access point unless there is a verified Internet connection. This feature improves hand-offs between Wi-Fi and cellular connections, helping to maintain your video chat or voice-over-IP (VoIP) call as you switch.
  • Performance: Your phone now uses the new Android Runtime to help optimize application performance.  After upgrading to Lollipop, your applications will undergo a one-time optimization process.  Note that the optimization for ART requires more space.
  • Security: Encryption can now use a stronger 256-bit key to help protect your data.  Note that the stronger key willonly be used after you perform a factory reset on Android Lollipop.  Otherwise encryption will continue to use 128-bit key.  You can turn on encryption in the Security settings menu.

As is the norm, the update is being rolled out in stages. To see if it’s ready for your device head into Settings, scroll to the bottom and tap on “About Device”, hit “System Updates”, then select “Check for updates”.
