Google snaps up staff from Oyster’s soon-to-close e-book service
Oyster’s experiment with a Netflix-like subscription service for e-books appears to be coming to a close… at least, in its current form. The startup is warning customers that it will shut down its all-you-can-read service over the course of several months. As it explains, the team has decided that the best way to pursue its mobile reading dream is to take on “new opportunities.” While it’s not initially clear what this means, Recode has confirmed that “a portion” of Oyster’s staff (including its CEO and co-founders) are jumping ship for Google’s Play Books division. In short, this is an indirect acquisition — Google is snapping up the core of the company without buying all of its assets.
There are hints at a possible resurgence, whether it’s at Google or somewhere else, but we wouldn’t count on this unlimited reading model coming back as-is. Unlike with movies, most book enthusiasts don’t read so voraciously that they can justify dropping $10 per month. Oyster added purchasable books well after it got started, and likely too late to help. And we’d note that Oyster was trying to take on Amazon, the 800-pound gorilla of e-books — unless it offered something that made Amazon’s business strategy seem quaint, it was always going to face an uphill battle. As sad as it is to lose an interesting alternative to the pay-per-book model, this outcome isn’t that shocking.

DoJ shells out $23 million for the President’s body camera pilot program
The Department of Justice announced last May that it would fund a national pilot program for law enforcement body cameras, a plan first put forth by President Obama. On Monday, the DoJ made good on that promise by awarding $23 million in grants to 32 states for the purchase of these devices. Of that total, $19.3 million will go towards actually purchasing the necessary 50,000 cameras, another $2 million is earmarked for training and the remaining $1.9 million will be used to conduct impact studies in Miami, Milwaukee and Phoenix.
“This vital pilot program is designed to assist local jurisdictions that are interested in exploring and expanding the use of body-worn cameras in order to enhance transparency, accountability and credibility,” US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement. “The impact of body-worn cameras touches on a range of outcomes that build upon efforts to mend the fabric of trust, respect and common purpose that all communities need to thrive.”

Google Clock app update v4.2: UI changes, ascending alarm volume, separate tones and more
Google’s Clock is probably the app you worry the least about, but no doubt it’s also one of the most useful tools we can find in our Android smartphones. This is why the Search Giant is so fond of always making it as useful and pleasant as possible. The latest update brings the software up to version 4.2. Wondering what’s new? Let’s tell you all about the most noticeable changes!
The biggest improvement is likely the addition of ascending volume for alarms. This simply means that alarm tones will no longer just blast through your speakers; the sound will gradually increase in volume until it reaches its full potential, making your waking time much smoother and more pleasant.
Another cool new feature included in this update is the ability to set different ringtones for alarms and timers, which definitely makes sense. You don’t want to confuse these, right?

Other changes seem to be purely aesthetic, but they will also add some functionality. The Menu button has been moved to the top-right corner, where it is available from any page within the app, whereas before it could only be found in the main page. In addition, the floating action button is smaller and the navigation bar is more transparent with compatible phones.
This iteration of the Clock app should be rolling out through the Google Play Store as we speak. But keep in mind this happens gradually too. Not all users will see it yet. You can just wait around for the Google Play Store to have it ready for you, but the APK file is also available from here. You know, just in case you are really in that much of a rush.
What’s on your HDTV: ‘Minority Report’, ‘FIFA 16’, ‘CSI’ series finale
Now that the Emmy Awards have wrapped up (and HBO walked away with a ton of them), it’s time for the fall TV season to kick off properly. Minority Report debuts on Fox in just a few hours, returning us to the world of the 2002 movie, after the pre-cogs have been released. Also back tonight is CBS’ Scorpion, in case you want to see more “hacking” on TV, and of course Castle. Tomorrow night Limitless follows Minority Report’s movie-to-TV footsteps, where it’s joined by The Muppets series premiere. On Sunday, the original CSI is wrapping up its run after 15 seasons and three spin-offs, but first we’re curious to see if Heroes Reborn can recapture the (initial) magic of the original show. Gamers of course have Blood Bowl II to enjoy, along with FIFA 16 and Penarium. Look after the break to check out each day’s highlights, including trailers and let us know what you think (or what we missed)

Bitcoin Ponzi scheme operator pleads guilty to fraud
Digital currencies like bitcoin are still marking many firsts, and that unfortunately includes the first crimes. Case in point: Trendon Shavers has pleaded guilty to the first-ever US securities fraud charges involving bitcoin. The Texan was accused of operating a Ponzi scheme that swiped more than $4.5 million from investors. He promised enormous returns on investment (a whopping 3,641 percent per year) to those who helped fund a stock market campaign, but was really using the money from newer customers to pay existing ones. To no one’s surprise, this deception didn’t last long. Nearly half (48) of the 100 investors suffered losses, and Shavers even used $147,000 of their funds to buy himself luxuries like a BMW M5 sedan.
The outcome is small potatoes next to that of many conventional fraud cases, and it’s ending with a whimper — Shavers originally pleaded not guilty half a year ago. Nonetheless, the trial could have a significant influence on future fraud cases. Besides establishing some legal precedents, it may send a message to other would-be fraudsters hoping that virtual schemes are relatively safe from prosecution. Shavers was originally fined $40.7 million for his actions, and it’s doubtful that his confession will get him off the hook for most (if any) of that amount.

Sony rolls out ‘Dungeon Defenders 2’ as a paid alpha on PS4
Dungeon Defenders 2 will be free when it launches as a full game on PlayStation 4, but fans who want to play it as soon as possible, pre-alpha bugs and all, can pay for the privilege starting next week. The pre-alpha version of Dungeon Defenders 2 — that’s a version that the developers are still building — will be available for purchase on PS4 on September 29th in three packages: $15, $25 and $75. These are three bundles offering different in-game goodies for die-hard (or simply curious) fans, and they’re identical to the ones offered on Steam Early Access.
Sony has been toying with the idea of paid early access on PS4 since July 2014, at least. At the time, SCEA VP of Developer and Publisher Relations Adam Boyes had the following to say: “That’s one of the massive conversations we have internally. That, at what point does [a game meet standards of release]? We still at some point ensure that we’re being mindful of the consumer. We don’t want somebody to stumble across that title and expect a full product and have a negative experience.”
Microsoft unveiled its own paid alpha system at E3 2015 with the Xbox Game Preview program. That one is specifically designed to support Microsoft’s independent-development support system, ID@Xbox. Steam was one of the first distributors to jump on the paid alpha business, with its “Early Access” system. Steam Early Access, along with the community-voted Greenlight service, contributed to an influx of games on the service.

Apple Gives Roundhouse Music Venue ‘Environmental Makeover’
As the Apple Music Festival continues at London’s Roundhouse performing arts and concert venue, Apple environmental head Lisa P. Jackson announced that the company has given the historical venue an “environmental makeover“.
We’re making major upgrades to the lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems; installing recycling and composting bins; arranging to turn used fryer oil into biofuel; buying renewable energy credits to cover the Roundhouse’s September electricity use; and offering reusable water bottles instead of plastic ones.
Apple says they expect the changes to reduce Roundhouse’s annual emissions by 60 tons, save 60,000 gallons of water a year and divert more than 1,600 kilograms of waste from landfills. Apple has continually noted that one of its goals is to “leave the world better than they found it”, which Jackson echoes in her tweet highlighting the renovation. The company has also continually highlighted its own environmental responsibility with annual reports.
The Apple Music Festival continues until September 28, with performances from The Weeknd, One Direction, Pharrell and Florence + The Machine still to come.
ConvenientPower launches wireless charging pad for devices with metal backs
ConvenientPower has announced a new wireless charging pad that will allow devices with metal backs to take advantage of the convenient charging method. The charging pads are designed with Qualcomm’s licensed WiPower wireless charging in mind, so this should open up tons of possibilities for manufacturers when designing mobile devices.
The wireless charging pads will be called Wow(me) and will work with all devices, not just metal-backed phones. It also shares the same positive qualities as any other Rezence certified chargers, including the ability to charge multiple devices at once and a total output of 10 watts.
While it’ll probably be awhile before we start to see consumer devices take advantage of this, it’s a positive move forward towards standardizing wireless charging.
