Google sends out invites for September 29 event, Nexus devices and updated Chromecast incoming

Google_Teaser_Sep29_Android6.0_091815Google just made its September 29 event official. Invites are beginning to roll out. Google fans can expect to see new Nexus devices announced in addition to an updated version of the company’s Chromecast.

Google will indeed hold an event on September 29 in San Francisco. We are expecting to see an announcement of the LG Nexus 5X as well as the Huawei Nexus 6P. A recent report also suggests we could see an updated version of Google’s Chromecast media streaming player with new options and faster Wi-Fi support.

The Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P will debut Android 6.0 and will most likely have Google’s new Android Pay service pre-installed and ready to go. Both devices will likely include fingerprint scanners to support Google’s new Fingerprint API and built-in NFC for mobile payments. One can also expect to see good hardware, high-resolution cameras, fast processors and extraordinarily unique designs.

According to Google’s teaser image, the event will start promptly at 9:00 PT. If you’re not attending, Google will have a live-stream on its YouTube channel at youtube.com/google. We hope you’re as excited as we are.

Malware-ridden apps found in Apple’s Chinese App Store

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The iOS App Store is usually a trustworthy source of software. But as hackers tend to do, they found a way to get their nefarious wares into the China version of the software supermarket. By using altered versions of Apple’ development tool Xcode they were able to slip malware into apps being built by unaware devs. The problem started when developers downloaded altered versions of Xcode (named “XcodeGhost” Alibab researchers) from third-party sites. When apps built with the modified compiler are launched, they collect the phone’s name, UUID, language and country, current time and network type. That data is then encrypted and sent to servers. Not a huge breach, but no one wants to be tracked by unknown sources.

The bigger issue is that these apps made it into Apple’s App Store in China. While only a handful of apps have gotten past Apple’s strict security, all it takes is one app with an aggressive piece of malware to destroy the trust customers have put in Apple. Fortunately, the apps have only been seen in the App Store in China.

Also, developers shouldn’t be downloading their tools from random third-party sites. Just a thought.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment about XcodeGhost and the infected apps.

Google announces an event to be held on September 29th

android 6.0 marshmallow

Google has been up to some big things in the past few months, including playing around with the very ABC’s that structure the company and announcing Android 6.0. Rumors and leaks have been flowing freely as well, of new Nexus products and even a second Chromecast. While we don’t know exactly what Mountain View has on the plates, we do know when it plans to serve them: earlier today the search giant sent out official RSVP invites for an event to be held on September 29th from 9AM in San Francisco.

Given the aforementioned leaks, we expect the conference will include the official announcement of not only the LG-made Nexus 5X/Nexus 5 (2015) but presumably the larger and more premium Huawei Nexus. It has been widely speculated that this year will not see the release of a new Nexus tablet device, something that appears all the more believable in light of the absence of leaks. Yesterday word broke that a new Chromecast refresh will also be introduced.

The LG-made Nexus is rumored to come with a 5.2-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM and a 13MP rear-facing camera. The Huawei-made device is said to sport a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM. Both devices will likely come with USB Type-C ports and rear-mounted fingerprint scanners, as well.

While it’s possible additional products or services will be announced, the event will most likely focus on the Nexus devices, their pricing, availability, and to an extent, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow build running on them.

We will be there live to bring you full coverage of the event, so make sure to tune in on the 29th to see what Google has in store for what is soon to be in stores.

This is what the Sony Xperia Z5 boot animation looks like

Sony_Xperia_Z5_WHITEAt IFA 2015, Sony unveiled its new Xperia Z5 series of smartphones. The lineup includes the Z5, the Z5 Compact and the Z5 Premium. Here is a quick look at the new Z5 boot animation.

The embedded video shows the animation that users will see when first booting up their new Xperia device(s). It uses a white colored clean theme that changes to a greenish color after initially popping up. The opening transition is similar to what we saw introduced on Lollipop. The text reads “Powered by Android” and then it fades away.

Sony’s new smartphones are expected to hit countries around the world in the coming weeks. Some variants such as the Xperia Z5 Premium will only come to select countries. There is still no word on whether Sony’s devices will make it to the states. It will be interesting to see how the new Xperia line does against competitors. We’ll keep you covered.

Apple TV Dev Tidbits: First Emulator Available, Old Remotes Work With New TV, Siri Remote Limited for Gaming

As developers get their hands on Apple TV, they’ve started experimenting with its new operating system tvOS, testing new kinds of apps and finding tidbits that haven’t been discovered yet. Developer James Addyman, for instance, has created an emulator for the new Apple TV called Provenance.

Provenance is an iOS front end that allows support for multiple emulators. Currently, it supports emulators for Sega’s Genesis, Master System, Mega CD and Game Gear and Nintendo’s NES, SNES, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance.

While Provenance is still being developed and it’s unlikely the app will make it into the Apple TV’s App Store, other developers can test Provenance as Addyman continues work on it. Addyman says certain issues still need to be corrected, including determining when the Apple TV will erase its local content and how to properly map old Sega and Nintendo gamepad functions to the Siri Remote. Addyman began developing Provenance last week within the tvOS simulator.

Mirroring Addyman’s concerns about mapping old Nintendo and Sega gamepad functions to the Siri Remote, developer Steve Troughton-Smith points out how many inputs can actually be used for playing games.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
While the touchpad can be clicked, acting as a “second button”, it can’t be clicked easily while being used to control movement. This could make game development difficult, as games have to be able to be played on the Siri Remote.

Troughton-Smith has also been revealing Apple TV tidbits as he explores the dev kit. For instance, when a user picks up the new Siri Remote it senses it’s being held and automatically wakes up the screen before a button is pressed. IR is used to control a TV’s volume with the Siri Remote and your TV remote can be used to control the Apple TV.

Additionally, the existing Apple TV IR remotes also work with the new Apple TV. This includes the silver aluminum remote that ships with current Apple TVs and the original white plastic Apple TV remote. While they don’t allow you to access Siri, they do allow you to navigate around the Apple TV’s interface.

The new Apple TV will be available in October and come in two variations: a 32 GB version for $149 and a 64 GB version for $199.

Google’s likely Nexus/Android event is happening September 29th

US-TECHONOLOGY-GOOGLE

Google just sent over an invite for “some tasty new treats and much s’more” September 29th in San Francisco. It didn’t say what will be revealed but based on the timing, we’re thinking Android Marshmallow release, plus new hardware in the Nexus and Chromecast families? Recent leaks have pointed to Nexus phones from both LG and Huawei, while the Chromecast family may be expanding and getting rounder. Amazon and Apple debuted new devices for the TV this month, and we can’t see the folks at Google/Alphabet letting that go without a response. Whatever desserts Google is bringing, we’ll be there at 12PM ET / 9AM PT on September 29th to find out.

Burberry teams up with Snapchat to preview new collection

Burberry continues to prove that it’s one of the most tech-minded fashion houses today. The British brand has joined forces with Snapchat to give fans a glimpse of its Spring 2016 lineup from its design studio before it’s showcased at London Fashion Week. Also, the company will be posting behind-the-scenes snaps to show how it’s preparing for the big event. You can see these pre-show snaps starting on September 20th, Sunday, at 2PM Eastern, if you add the luxury brand’s account. In addition, Burberry will be posting photos and videos through Snapchat’s Live Stories feature once the show begins. Like any Live Stories content, though, the posts will vanish into the ether after 24 hours.

Just a few days ago, the fashion house announced its new Apple Music channel, as well. It’s not so strange that a luxury fashion brand became the first big company to get a Music channel, though: Apple’s current senior VP of retail, Angela Ahrendts, used to be Burberry’s CEO.

Hands-on video of the BlackBerry Venice shows almost 4 minutes of the unannounced device

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

The other day we were treated to some very clear photos of the upcoming Android-powered BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Venice, but naturally that’s now been trumped by an almost 4 minute hands-on video of the BlackBerry Venice. Courtesy of Baka Mobile, the video walks through some of the features that have been difficult to surmise from photos, such as tap to wake. Despite this being only an evaluation unit, the Venice in the video looks very close to a production unit, but we’ll still have to wait for BlackBerry‘s official announcement. Check out the video for yourself down below:

A few features are quite interesting – the biometric touch swipe that is possible on the slide out keyboard is an unusual feature, especially considering the device has a touchscreen. Also, the confirmation of the swipe up command on the home button which allows quick navigation to Google Now, BlackBerry Hub or search is a really nice touch too. If nothing else, the BlackBerry Venice is still an extremely exciting device even though we’re finding out so much about it in the news – just goes to show that BlackBerry still knows their stuff.

Huawei Nexus 6P will be the name of the other Nexus smartphone

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

We’ve been hearing the name Nexus 5X being thrown around for the LG Nexus smartphone that is allegedly going to be announced later this month, but only today has a name for its compatriot, the Huawei Nexus been dropped. According to the rumour, the Huawei Nexus will be called the “Huawei Nexus 6P“, joining the Nexus 5X in enjoying a random letter attached to the end of its name – whether this letter has any significance remains to be seen, but Google usually has a reason for everything.

If all goes to plan, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will be announced at Google on September 29th where this is a growing list of potential announcements including the Nexus smartphones as well as a new Nexus Player and new Chromecast as well. Naturally, that will be capped off with a software announcement, the official release of Android Marshmallow, so it should be a hell of an event, if it happens.
