Some Moto X Pure users are having issue with their speakers

In a forum post on Motorola’s forums, many Moto X Pure owners are complaining that they’re having issues with the top speaker on their phone. There doesn’t appear to be any obvious rhyme or reason to the issues that range from crackling at high volumes to audio skipping when the Moto X Pure is turned into landscape.

The user that started the thread reports that their issues are apparent even at less than full volume and it seems to be the worst in audio books. Turning off “audio effects” seems to help the problem but does not fix it completely. Others chime in that they’re seeing similar issues on their Moto X Pure and Moto X Style.

Another user has gone on to complain about the audio dropping out for a second when the phone is turned into landscape mode. Another has issues playing ringtones at full volume.

While some suspect that it’s a software issue that can be fixed with an update, others think it’s Motorola using a substandard speaker. The Moto X Pure starts at only $400 so it makes sense that people will automatically think Moto is skipping out on quality parts to keep the price down but the rise of cheap, good smartphones shows the world that you can make a compelling device for a compelling price. Motorola seems to be the king of this.

Cujo launches on Indiegogo aiming to protect all your connected devices

Cujo, a new project that just launched on Indiegogo, aims to take the guesswork out of securing your connected devices, from smartphones to baby monitors.

Hacks are no longer the stuff of Hollywood flicks. These days, the chances of falling victim to a very real – and potentially very nasty – hacking incident have shot up. And, despite popular belief, hackers don’t target just corporations and public figures. Determined hackers can and will breach your personal devices. Laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, thermostats, even cars – if they connect to the internet, they’re vulnerable.

This is where Cujo, a smart security device developed by an LA-based startup, comes in. Think of Cujo as your final line of protection against internet threats. This little white box plugs into your router with just one cable and zero fuss. After that, it immediately begins scanning traffic, protecting you from intrusions, malware, and other types of threats. Whenever an incident is detected, you can get a detailed notification on your Android or iOS smartphone, so you can act and keep your home safe.

cujo

Cujo combines firewall, anti-malware, anti-phishing, and threat-detection technology into one device that doesn’t require a tech background to set up and use. Compared to conventional solutions like firewalls and antivirus software, Cujo offers more features and better protection, in one package. And it gets smarter as you use it, thanks to regular updates.

Inside Cujo, there is a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage and a dedicated chip for cryptographic acceleration. This hardware is needed to run the local antimalware and anti-intrusion software, but the device also offloads some of the analysis tasks to Cujo’s servers.

cujo schema

Cujo is now available on Indiegogo at an introductory price of $49, which includes one Cujo device and 12 months of service (first 100 backers), 9 months of service (the next 100 backers), or 6 months of service (regular backers). After the bundled service period, Cujo will cost $8.99/month or $89/year.

Is Cujo worth its money? That’s up to you to decide, but if you’re serious about your privacy and security, the cost of two nice lattes per month doesn’t seem too much to ask.

Foldable Samsung smartphone to arrive in January?

samsung logo mwc 2015 8

Remember those interesting looking foldable display prototypes from Samsung last year? Well, a new report from a “leakster with in-depth knowledge” suggests that Samsung may be preparing to launch a foldable smartphone next year.

The handset, also previously known as “Project Valley”, could appear as early as January 2016. The device has previously been rumored to feature a dual-display setup, with a larger display on the inside that might fold over when the shell is closed. There will apparently be two versions of the handset, both powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

A mid-range version is said to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 620 SoC, while another may make use of a high-end Snapdragon 820 processor. Samsung is the first OEM to receive samples of Qualcomm’s next flagship processor, which it may also be using in the Galaxy S7.

Alongside the SoC, the foldable smartphone will also apparently be powered by 3GB of RAM, will feature a microSD card slot and will come with a non-removable battery. That said, there’s no way to validate these rumors right now.

Patently Mobile

However, Samsung Display has previously stated that “the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016” and a patent for Samsung’s dual-screen Project Valley foldable smartphone cropped up earlier this year too. Samsung certainly seems to be working on this type of device in some capacity, but there’s always a big leap from prototype to a retail product.

Would you buy a foldable smartphone, or is the design just too odd to be practical?

iPhone 6s and 6s Plus Weigh More Primarily Due to 3D Touch Display

While the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are designed with Series 7000 aluminum, which has a stronger and marginally thicker composition compared to Series 6000 aluminum used on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the new smartphones weigh more primarily due to their 3D Touch displays.

Apple published Environmental Reports for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus that reveal the devices are about 11% heavier than their predecessors, as first noted by The Verge. But the additional weight comes almost entirely from the 3D Touch display, which weighs nearly twice the amount of a regular ion-strengthened display.

iPhone-6-vs-6s-Material-Breakdown
The material breakdown for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus list the display weighing 29 grams and 40 grams respectively, while the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus displays weigh 12 grams and 19 grams respectively.

Meanwhile, the individual weights of the aluminum, battery, stainless steel, glass, circuit boards, plastic and other materials on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are very similar to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus weigh 143 grams (5.04 ounces) and 192 grams (6.77 ounces) respectively, while the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus weigh 129 grams (4.55 ounces) and 172 grams (6.07 ounces) respectively.

Qualcomm talks about the impressive X12 LTE modem in the Snapdragon 820

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Qualcomm sounds like its pretty excited about the Snapdragon 820 processor – with each passing week, they’ve been revealing more details of their upcoming powerhouse, and naturally, we like what we see. This week, it’s time to hear about the X12 LTE modem in the Snapdragon 820, which Qualcomm says contains new LTE and Wi-Fi technology, and will be the “first commercially announced mobile processor to support LTE Category 12 download speeds of up to 600 Mbps, LTE Category 13 uplink speeds of up to 150 Mbps, and LTE in Unlicensed (LTE-U). I’m not going to go into the details of how exactly this technology works lest I embarass myself, but here are few videos to help illustrate what this means:

Something interesting that Qualcomm mentions in its technical ramblings is that they’ve made the X12 LTE modem smarter in terms of how it seamlessly switches between LTE and Wi-Fi – of particular use to those who use Wi-Fi calling a lot. Qualcomm has previously announced that we likely won’t be seeing devices with the Snapdragon 820 until H1 2016, which is still some time away but it sounds like it’s going to be worth the wait. If you want a more indepth description of all of this, be sure to hit the Qualcomm source link below.

What do you think about the X12 LTE modem in the Snapdragon 820? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

‘Danganronpa 3’ brings the weirdness to both PS4 and PS Vita

If you’ve not played (or heard of) Danganronpa, they’re a visual novel series that lie somewhere between Battle Royale and a high school dating sim: it’s all about as murderous and plot-twisty as you might expect. Populated with anime characters and obeying the same stretched rules of logic as Phoenix Wright, the dark (sometimes very dark) series is getting now another sequel. Danganronpa v.3 made its first appearance at Sony’s TGS press event — two days before the thing officially starts — sans release date, but with the fact that it’ll land on both PS4 and Vita. Monochrome murderous bears for everyone.

Toshiba’s latest laptop does convertibility on the cheap

With recent models from Dell and now Apple, tablet laptop hybrids a la Surface are suddenly de rigeur. If those models are outside your budget, Toshiba has just introduced its own low-cost Windows 10 model, the Satellite Click 10. It weighs in at a scant 2.2 pounds and when you detach the keyboard, you’ve got a 0.36-inch, 1.2 pound tablet. Either way, you get features like a 10-inch 1,900 x 1,200 multi-touch display, front 8-megapixel and 2-megapixel rear cameras, 32GB or 64GB of SSD storage (expandable via a MicroSD slot), a Micro HDMI port for TV output and Dolby Digital Plus stereo speakers. Slideshow-319655

The fun stops there, however, as it only packs an Intel Atom x5 processor and 2GB of RAM. Power-wise, that makes it more tablet than laptop, so running Windows 10 may be a burden for it. However, the $349 price tag may overcome those objections, and the light weight, keyboard and Windows 10 should make it a decent tablet and viable laptop in a pinch, for less than many Android tablets.

Pax is bringing its vaporizer to Europe

Pax 2 vaporizer

Pax sells some of the best loose-leaf vaporizers — and proprietary e-cig systems — on the market. Over the past five years, though, its products have only officially been available in North America. Today, the San Francisco startup is branching out into Europe, beginning with the UK and Germany. But not all of its products are making the journey across the Atlantic yet.

To start with, just the Pax 2 vaporizer will go on sale. It’s already available through the company’s site, and it’s also heading to “local brick and mortar retailers.” It costs £199 in the UK and €255 in Germany, including sales tax. Pax has inked a deal with a local logistics company called Rhenus Group, which it says will allow it to rapidly expand and offer its products in more countries over the coming months.

As for Pax’s other products, it doesn’t look like the cheaper original vaporizer — which has sold over 500,000 in North America — will come to Europe any time soon. There’s also no timeline for the company’s Juul e-cigarette, which offers a solid vaping experience in a tiny package, but Pax says it sees “significant opportunity for the Juul brand across markets.”

Although Pax is starting with the UK and Germany, it’s not going to end there. It’s picked the two territories due to the UK and Germany’s “significant influence influence across Europe in art, fashion and music,” and the fact that both countries have a “cultural adoption of loose-leaf tobacco use.” (Not to mention that they’re also the continent’s two largest economies). Where next for Pax? It’s keeping that under wraps, but based on the above criteria France and Italy would be the obvious answer.
