Periscope update addresses vertical video syndrome

periscope_landscape_orientation_banner

Periscope has announced an update to their app on both iOS and Android that adds the ability to broadcast in landscape mode, a welcome addition for those annoyed by vertical videos. According to Periscope, viewers can continue to watch broadcasts while holding their device in a portrait orientation as the app will adjust to maintain the broadcaster’s orientation.

In addition to the new landscape broadcast mode, Periscope has added a few other new features to their app. Periscope users may notice that broadcasts that show up in their home feed will now include an indication of who is sharing the broadcast to help users better understand why something is in the feed.

Periscope indicates they have added some new features to improve accessibility for visually impaired Periscopers. The improved support takes advantage of iOS accessibility features, so it is unclear whether Android users can take advantage of the improvements. Finally, Periscope has made it easier to launch a private broadcast by providing a list of mutual followers with which to share a broadcast. They also added options to select all mutual followers instead of having to tick each one. Opposite the accessibility improvements, this feature is only available for the Android app and will be coming to iOS later.

Motorola Bounce to sell as Verizon’s DROID Turbo 2

verizon_droid_turbo_2_motorola_bounce

Twitter tipster @upleaks posted some news a few days ago about a Motorola smartphone codenamed Bounce that was described as a mildly ruggedized version of the Moto X Play. @upleaks is back with more news about this device, this time claiming it will be released in the U.S. by Verizon as the DROID Turbo 2. Previously the Motorola Bounce had been pegged as the DROID Maxx 2 for Verizon.

For consumers who were interested in the middle tier of Motorola’s 2015 devices, the Motorola Moto X Play, it appears Verizon will be their only option in the form of a some type of DROID device if these rumors are accurate.

“Pokémon GO” gets real world touch with Niantic Labs help

pokemon_go_splash_screen

The world of Pokémon will be getting an infusion of virtual and real world gaming fun thanks to a new title called Pokémon GO that is in the works. The interaction between digital space and meat space is on its way to being a reality for Pokémon fans thanks to some help from Google’s – er, Alphabet’s – Niantic Labs. You may be familiar with Niantic Labs as the creator of the popular Ingress game and it appears Pokémon GO will get a touch of that same technology.

Like the Ingress game, Pokémon GO will enable users to launch the game on their smartphone to then access the virtual world of Pokémon overlaid on their real location. Taking things a step further though, the companies involved in the development of Pokémon GO which include Niantic Labs, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo Co., Ltd., will also be releasing a device called the Pokémon GO Plus. The device is a Bluetooth enabled accessory that will alert players to in-game events that may be close to their location. The Pokémon GO Plus will also have the ability to perform some actions like catching Pokémon through a button press.

Apple helps you prep to pre-order a new iPhone

Anxious to get your hands on one of those shiny new iPhones? You’re not alone. And while you may be waiting a few days to have one in hand, pre-orders open up this weekend. To help prep for the rush, the company is allowing eager US customers to enter some personal info ahead of the pre-order window opening, so when the time comes, all you’ll have to do is select your carrier, model and storage options before hitting submit. Entering your details will also tell you how much you’ll be parting with to secure the phone you’re after. Of course, Apple also has a new carrier-free upgrade plan that gets you a new iPhone every time a new one becomes available after 12 monthly payments. That option starts at $32 for the 16GB iPhone 6s. If you haven’t set your reminder yet, pre-orders open up at 12:01 AM PT (3:01 AM ET) September 12th.

Qualcomm wants to do for drones what it did for smartphones

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Qualcomm wants to be everywhere. So it’s not too surprising to see the company delving into drones with its new Snapdragon Flight platform. Based on its Snapdragon 801 processor, Flight aims to simplify drone development by giving companies a single board for dealing with drone communications and camera technology. That’s pretty similar to Qualcomm’s strategy in the smartphone arena. Of course, 4K video is front and center for Flight, but Qualcomm also includes support for a variety of sensors and its “Quick Charge” technology. Flight is powered by a 2.26Ghz quad-core processor and Adreno 330 GPU, and it also has dedicated video encoding and dual image sensor support (for depth-sensing cameras). Expect to see the new platform hitting drones early next year — the first customer is Chinese drone maker Yuneec, according to Fast Company.

California governor vetoes bill banning drones over private property

Drone in Flight

Legislation that would have restricted drone pilots in California has been struck down by governor Jerry Brown. The bill, spearheaded by state senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, would have banned quadcopters from flying below 350 feet around private properties — at least, not without the permission of the building’s owner, anyway. It passed both the state Assembly and state Senate in August, prompting opposition from GoPro and advocacy groups with ties to Amazon and Google. Brown has now dismissed the bill, however, because of its potential to “expose the occasional hobbyist and FAA-approved commercial user to burdensome litigation.” He admitted the bill was “well-intentioned,” but stressed that all parties need to discuss the issue further “before we go down that path.” Jackson, meanwhile, has gracefully accepted defeat, meaning Senate Bill 142 is shelved for now.

Verizon’s 18GB shared data plan costs $100

Verizon Earns

If Verizon’s previous 12GB bucket of shared data wasn’t big enough for your needs the company’s got a new tier to (hopefully) help you out. Big Red’s now offering 18GB for $100 a month and calling this new tier XXL, as Android Central points out. Of course, you’ll have to shell out $20 per connected line, but what’s a touch unexpected is that this promotion is only available for a limited time. This naturally still includes unlimited talk and text and if it proves popular, it probably wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine the carrier keeping the new tier around.

Apple isn’t the only one making an iPad Pro keyboard

If there’s one company that has experience building iPad keyboards, it’s Logitech. The accessory maker has made countless typing tools for Apple’s tablets, so unsurprisingly, it’s also working on one for the iPad Pro. It’s called the Create Keyboard Case and, like Apple’s own Smart Keyboard, connects through the new three-pronged Smart Connector. That means there’s no need to pair or charge the attachment, because it draws all of its power and data directly from the tablet. Logitech says it was developed closely with Apple — the first teaser image (above) hints at a full QWERTY layout and an exterior covered in a “tightly-woven premium fabric.” Why choose the Create over the Smart Keyboard? For one, the Create has plastic keys — rather than the fabric covered set found on Apple’s offering — and if you’ve seen the Smart Keyboard folded up, well, it doesn’t look all that attractive. Logitech says it’ll be available in the US and select parts of Europe and Asia when the iPad Pro goes on sale in November — there’s no word on pricing just yet, however.

I had to smile for my free cup of coffee at a trade show

IFA 2015: Smile for Your Coffee

Coffee, pens, non-existent free WiFi, and USB sticks are the four spirit animals of any tech show. But what if a company wants you to be happy before you’ve got your cup of morning sunshine? That’s DigitalSTROM‘s gambit, using its sensors and Intel’s RealSense 3D camera to detect when you’re smiling before delivering your daily caffeine hit. Sensing a grimace could prove more practical.
