Latest Periscope update lets you broadcast to your followers in landscape

Periscope, the popular live video broadcasting service from the makers of Twitter, is getting quite the notable update today that will make the app much easier to use. Among a few other notable changes, Periscope will now let you broadcast to your followers in landscape – a feature that many users have been asking for since the service launched back in May.
With this new addition, you can simply hold your device in portrait, or match the broadcaster’s orientation to maintain full screen video. Obviously this is a welcome feature, as users will no longer have to tilt their heads to watch a sideways video.

That’s not the only notable change in the app, though. The new update will allow you to see who shared a broadcast with you, so now you won’t need to wonder how a broadcast showed up in your main feed. There’s also a new feature that will make private broadcasting much easier on Android. Check out the full changelog below for more details:
- Share Context: When someone you follow shares a broadcast, it appears in your home feed. In this update, we’ve added an indicator beneath the broadcast title explaining who shared it with you. No more wondering why a broadcast showed up in your feed!
- Mutual Follow: This update makes private broadcasting much easier on Android. When you start a private broadcast, you can choose from a list of mutual followers (people you follow, who also follow you). We think this list is a more natural selection of people who you are likely to broadcast to. We’ve also added an option to quickly select all of your mutual follows. See something you want to share with your friends, but not the whole world? Check. This same behavior is coming soon to iOS, so hang tight!
The big update should be rolling out to the Play Store as we speak. Follow the link below to grab the latest version.
Dark Theme won’t return in Android 6.0 Marshmallow

In one of our first “Diving into M” posts we took a look at the new dark theme that had made its way into developer options for those using the Android M developer preview. Unfortunately the theme was removed for the second build, and didn’t reappear in the third and final developer build either. But what about Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s commercial release? Is there hope of the dark theme making a comeback? As it turns out, no.
While Google hasn’t formally talked about the dark theme, Issue 2657 on Google’s Issue Tracker talks about the dark theme and how it is missing from later M builds:
Please bring back the Dark Theme In the Android M,this time with pitch Black color applicable for displays like the notification center, title bar & app drawer.
The status of the issue has since been marked as Acknowledged, alongside the comment:
Thanks for the suggestion. Our development team has looked into this feature request. This will not be included in the M release. However, this may be considered for future releases.
If you were among those who were hoping to ditch the light theme on your stock Android device, this news probably comes as a bit of a disappoint. Honestly, seems like a pretty simple thing to add, and a dark theme that is expanded to the notification shade and other areas would especially be useful when using your phone at night, such doing a little night browsing before going to bed. For now though, stock Android users will just have to live without.
Were you hoping that dark theme would make it into Android 6.0? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge receiving Advanced Messaging and video calling in new update

If you’re the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge on T-Mobile, a software update should be headed your way sometime soon. Coming in at around 406MB and 413MB respectively, the updates rolling out to the S6 and S6 Edge will bring the software versions up to G920TUVU2DOH6 and G925TUVU2DOH6.
In the updates, both devices are receiving T-Mobile’s new Advanced Messaging feature, as well as native video calling from within the dialer application. Announced back in July, Advanced Messaging brings a ton of enhancements to group messaging, MMS and more. To learn more about Advanced Messaging, head here for more information. T-Mobile just recently announced that it would soon roll out native video calling from within the dialer app on select Android phones. This will let you video chat with other T-Mobile users without the need to download a third-party application. Up until now, this new video calling feature was only available on the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, and now it’s rolling out to Samsung’s smaller devices as well.

iPhone 6s and 6s Plus Priced Higher in Canada, Australia and Europe as U.S. Dollar Remains Strong
Apple has set higher prices for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in Canada, Australia and other countries to reflect a strengthening U.S. dollar and fluctuating currency exchange rates.
The off-contract prices for the iPhone 6s Plus in Canada, for example, are $1,029, $1,159 and $1,289 CAD for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB of storage space respectively.
Comparatively, the iPhone 6 Plus cost $969, $1,099 and $1,229 in Canadian dollars for the same capacities prior to Apple’s media event yesterday. That is $60 less for each model.
The off-contract prices for the iPhone 6s Plus in Australia are $1,229, $1,379 and $1,529 CAD for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB of storage respectively. Earlier this week, the iPhone 6 Plus retailed for $1,149, $1,299 and $1,449 in Australian dollars for the same storage sizes respectively.
Similarly, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have higher prices at launch than the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in euro-based countries such as France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. The base 16GB iPhone 6 retailed for €699 last September, for example, while the 16GB iPhone 6s will debut for €739.
Not all countries have been affected by the exchange rate, however, as the iPhone 6s Plus is priced the same as the iPhone 6 Plus in the United Kingdom. iPhone 6 Plus was most recently priced at £619, £699 and £719 in the U.K. for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB respectively, while the iPhone 6s Plus will have equal prices.
The new iPhone 6s Plus retains the same pricing as the iPhone 6 Plus in the U.S.
Apple Releases First Public Beta of iOS 9.1
Following yesterday’s big media event, Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 9.1 to developers, and now the company has made iOS 9.1 available to public beta testers. iOS 9.1 includes features for the iPad Pro, adding support for accessories like the Smart Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, both of which were designed for the larger-screened tablet.
iOS 9.1 also includes support for Unicode 8, introducing a selection of new emoji like taco, burrito, unicorn face, hot dog, popcorn, turkey, cheese wedge, and more.
Beta testers who have signed up for Apple’s beta testing program appear to be receiving the iOS 9.1 beta as an over-the-air update, so it may be available to testers who were previously running iOS 9 beta 5.
People who want to be a part of Apple’s beta testing program can sign up to participate through Apple’s beta testing website, which gives users access to both iOS and OS X betas.
iOS 9.1 will likely be released to the public alongside the iPad Pro in November.
Cricket Wireless fall promos start tomorrow with HTC Desire 520 for $99.99
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Pre-paid carriers have just as much competition to keep up with as the big boys. While they may not always offer the highest end of devices, many do a pretty solid job of keeping decent devices available at good prices for current and would be customers. With fall right around the corner it is imperative that companies like Cricket Wireless, and everyone else for that matter, gets on board with promotions to end summer and start the downward weather trend with new offers. This morning Cricket Wireless jumped out with an announcement regarding their fall promotions, which will officially be available tomorrow, September 11th.
The leading offer is the HTC Desire 520. It sports a 4.5 inch screen with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor and 1GB of RAM. It houses 8GB internal storage and does offer a micro SD card slot. You will be pleasantly surprised to find HTC Sense 7 installed on Android 5.1 along with a 8MP rear camera with a 2MP front shooter. Cricket will be offering this little Android device up to consumers for $99.99 with activation.
While the Desire 520 is the leading offer, it isn’t the only offer. If you are porting a number into the provider you can snag a LG Risio for $19.99, down from $49.99, or a LG G Stylo
for $99.99 instead of $149.99.
The carrier is also extending their Cricket Protect offering. This is their insurance offer for devices. Generally consumers have 7 days from the time of purchase to enroll and if they miss that opportunity they are out-of-luck. For a limited time, between September 11th – October 30th, all current and new customers can jump on board in an open enrollment period. Depending on the device you purchased the cost is $7 – $10 per month for coverage.
“When it comes to giving people more than they expect from a no annual contract carrier, Cricket is delivering big time,” said Janna Ducich, vice president and chief marketing officer, Cricket Wireless. “That’s why we work closely with manufacturers like HTC to bring customers what they want: high quality phones at affordable prices on a network with more 4G LTE coverage nationwide than T-Mobile, Metro PCS, Sprint or Boost. Add in our easy-to-use and affordable service plans with expanded international offering and the prices that include taxes and fees, and it’s clear, it is time to switch to Cricket.”
If you are looking to take advantage of those deals head to a Cricket Store near you, or visit their website.

Set-top box chip comes with TV enhancer for colorblind viewers
Researchers from the University of East Anglia developed a technology called “Eyeteq” that can tweak what’s shown on TV for colorblind viewers sometime ago. Now, they’re making sure the tech is more accessible to hardware manufacturers, particularly those that make set-top boxes. Their spin-off company, Spectral Edge, has integrated Eyeteq into STMicroelectronics’ Cannes set-top box chipset. As you can see in the demo video below the fold, users would be able to adjust their TVs based on the kind of colorblindness they have using a remote control. The chip enhances the colors in each frame, but the changes show up on screen instantly.
The European startup didn’t say whether any company’s already showing interest, so it’s unclear when a Cannes-equipped device will hit the market. It clarified, however, that the adjustments will have minimal impact on those who don’t suffer from the condition, letting family and friends watch movies and shows together. Note that there are other tools available for colorblind people out there, including a Chrome extension. Also, more and more games are offering a colorblind mode/option. Still, a set-top box with a built-in enhancer for people who see hues in a different way sounds mighty useful for TV junkies.

Android Pay is available starting today
Android Pay, Google’s tap-to-pay smartphone wallet, starts rolling out today, the company announced in a blog post. Android Pay will gradually hit all compatible devices over the next few days and it’s accepted at more than 1 million locations across the US, including Toys ‘R’ Us, GameStop, Panera, Walgreens, Macy’s, Subway and Whole Foods. Android Pay stores your credit, debit, gift and loyalty cards, and allows users to pay simply by unlocking their phones and placing it near an NFC-connected terminal. Yeah, it’s a bit like Apple Pay.
Android Pay is compatible with NFC-enabled Android devices, meaning those that run at least KitKat 4.4, and it will be available across all carriers. It supports credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, and a hefty lineup of popular banks.
As for security, Android Pay uses tokenization, which means transactions are processed via individual account numbers, rather than your actual credit or debit card numbers. If you lose your phone — rather, your wallet — head to Android Device Manager to shut it down so no one can spend your cash. Those who use Google Wallet can expect that app to receive the Android Pay update over the next few days, while everyone else will be able to download the standalone app fresh from Google Play.
If you’re going to stick with a physical wallet for a while longer, there’s still some news here for you: The launch of Android Pay signals the imminent launch of Android’s latest mobile OS, Marshmallow.

Apple TV’s Siri will help you binge-watch in only eight countries
Apple TV’s new Siri-enabled remote, with a touchpad and mic, has finally brought the media player up to speed with its competitors like Roku and Amazon. In addition to a snappy universal search, the digital assistant can now pick shows by cameos, movies by actors and genres by age. The demo onstage — with Siri pulling up the weather and a sport scorecard while automatically pausing the movie in the background — seemed to give the company’s TV box a much-needed edge. But according to their developer guide, the voice-controlled TV watching pleasure will be limited to only eight countries at the time of launch end of next month.
In addition to the US and the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Spain will have access to Siri’s assistance with the simple press of the microphone button on the remote. For the rest of the world, the same button will reportedly open an “onscreen search app”. So if you don’t reside in one of the eight listed countries, you’ll probably have to wait a long time before Siri can assist your binge-watching ways.
